Charles was born at London on 29 October 1883, a son of Charles Henry Copeland.
Charles married Annie Louisa Swan Pearson at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 13 September 1905. At that time he was a fisherman living at 249 Raglan Street, Lowestoft. By 1911 Charles and Annie were living at 52 Haward Street and later at 57 Bevan Street, Lowestoft.
Charles had been awarded his Certificate of Competency as a Second Hand in 1908.
A Deck Hand with H.M. Trawler Princess Beatrice. Walter died on 5th of October 1914 at the age of 22.
Walter was born at Lowestoft on 22 May 1892, a son of William and Mary Ann Kent. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 3 July 1892, and his family lived at 75 Seago Street and this was their home in 1901. Later they lived at 44 Rotterdam Road, Lowestoft.
In 1911 Walter was the Fourth Hand on the trawler Young Percy at Padstow.
A Younker, with the Steam Drifter Liliy, John died on 7th of October 1914 at the age of 39.
John was born at Frostenden in 1875, a son of John and Harriet Bickers. In 1881 his family lived at Frostenden. By 1891 they had moved to 49 Lorne Road, Kirkley, and this would be John's home for the rest of his life. In 1891 he worked as a grocer's errand boy. By 1901 John was working as a fish packer.
A Skipper with Steam Drifter Lily, Joseph died on 7th of October 1914 at the age of 36.
Joseph was born at Brixham, Devon, in 1878, a son of James William and Rebecca Strong. He was baptised at Saint John's Church, Lowestoft, on 3 March 1878. The 1891 Census shows Joseph living at the Merchant Seaman's Orphanage Asylum, Snavesbrook, Essex. Full name Joseph John Honeywell Hoppins Strong.
A Net Stower with the Steam Drifter Lily. Richard Charles died on 7th of October 1914 at the age of 39.
Richard was born at Lowestoft on 8 February 1875, a son of Joseph and Mary Ann Britteon. Note in some sources his surname is given as Britton or Brittion. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 4 April 1875. In 1881 his family lived at 24 Bevan Street and by 1891 at 10 Raglan Street. Richard, like his father before him became a fisherman.
A Private with H.M.S. Hawke. Frederick died on 15th of October 1914 at the age of 29.
Frederick was born at Wandsworth, London, on 30 September 1885, a son of Frederick and Hannah Burridge. In 1891 his family lived at Gardeners Cottage, Wandsworth. In 1904 they lived at 6 Saint Ann's Hill, Wandsworth, and, by 1911, at 58 Saint Ann's Hill.
In 1908 Frederick married Alice Miller in the Lowestoft area. In 1909 they lived at 7 Lower Grove, Wandsworth. After Frederick's death Alice moved to Lowestoft and married Thomas Lawrence: they lived at 11 Love Road, Lowestoft.

Charles was born at Newhaven, Sussex, on 16 April 1878, a son of Charles Robert and Mary Childs. In 1881 his family lived on the Coastguard Watch Vessel at Newhaven. By 1891 they were living at 3 King Street, Winterton, Norfolk. In 1901 the family home was at 54 Tennyson Road, Lowestoft, and, after 1911, they moved to 54 Saint Margaret's Road, Lowestoft.
An Able Seaman with H.M.S. Loyal. Donald died on 17th of October 1914 at the age of 19.
Donald was born at Norwich on 21 January 1895, a son of John and Alexandra Langlands. In 1901 his family were living at Layham, Suffolk. By 1911 his father had died and his mother lived at Cliftonville House, Alexandra Road, Pakefield, and later she lived at 500 London Road, Lowestoft.
Donald was working as a gardener's assistant when he joined the Royal Navy, as a Boy 2nd Class, on 7 March 1911.
A Driver with 12th Battery, died on 23rd of October 1914 at the age of 29.
William was born at Lowestoft on 29 August 1875, a son of William henry and Sarah Ann Beecroft. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 7 November 1875. In 1881 William's family lived at Prospect Place, 6 Saint Peter's Street, and by 1886 at Reeve Street. From 6 September 1886 William attended Saint Margaret's Boys' School. In 1891 William's family lived at The Black Swan Inn, Old Market Place, Lowestoft, where his father was the publican.
A Private with 1st Bn. Aubrey died on 31st of October 1914 at the age of 26.
Aubrey was born at Hampstead, Middlesex, on 8 August 1886, a son of Annie Amy Austin and step-son of Charles William Bradfield. He was baptised at Saint Saviour's Church, Hampstead, on 29 August 1886. In 1888 his family lived at 27 Lismore Road, Hampstead, and by 1891 they were living at 32 Fleet Road, Hampstead. Aubrey attended Fleet Road School, Hampstead.

Wilfred was born at Covehithe in June 1897, a son of Robert George and Amy Georginanna Foulger. He was baptised at Saint Andrews Church, Covehithe, on 17 July 1898.

Herbert was born at Lowestoft on 5 July 1890, a son of Edward and Rebecca Robinson. He was baptised at Christchurch, Lowestoft, on 6 August 1890, and his family lived at 44 Clemence Street. By 1911 Herbert's father had died and his family lived at 35 Beckham Road. At that time Herbert worked as a brick maker's labourer. Subsequently Herbert's mother lived at 49 Trafalgar Street, Lowestoft.

Arthur was born at Lowestoft on 8 November 1891, a son of Benjamin and Alice Baldwin. Arthur attended Saint Margaret’s School from 1 February 1899, and his family lived at 11 Wellington Cottages, Clapham Road, Lowestoft. Arthur’s father died and for a time in 1901 Arthur, his mother, and some of his siblings, lived at the workhouse at Oulton Broad. In 1911 his family lived at 14 Saint Margaret’s Road, Lowestoft, and Arthur was a labourer working for a herring fish curer.
A Private with 7th Bn., Arthur died on 4th of October 1915 at the age of 18.
Arthur was born at Lowestoft in 1897, a son of George and Emily Porter. In 1901 his family lived at 81 Wollaston Road, Lowestoft, and this was still their home in 1911.
Arthur volunteered and enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft. He joined the Suffolk Regiment and was posted to the 7th Battalion. He arrived in France with the 7th battalion on 30 May 1915.

He was baptised at Saint Mary’s Church, Somerleyton, on 14 May 1893, and his family lived at Somerleyton. In 1911 his family lived at The Green, Somerleyton, and Cecil was a house carpenter.

Thomas was born at Lowestoft on 15 May 1864, a son of Thomas Turner and Maria Elizabeth French. In 1881 his family lived at Ivy Cottage, Denmark Road, Lowestoft. Later his parents lived at 8 Wellington Esplanade, Lowestoft.
On 31 July 1880 Thomas began a four-year Merchant Navy apprenticeship with J. Corry of London.
Thomas was awarded his Mate’s Certificate on 14 June 1888.

Cecil was born at Framlingham in 1882, a son of Sutton and Louisa Mary Ashford. In 1891 his family lived at Pound Street, Halesworth. By 1901 they were living at 8 London Road, Halesworth, and Cecil was a printer’s apprentice. In 1911 Cecil lived at 13 Tennyson Road, Lowestoft, and he worked as a printer compositor. Later his parents lived at 36 Rotterdam Road, Lowestoft.
Cecil worked for Flood and Sons, Borough Press, Beach Road, Lowestoft, for 13 years.
An Engineman with H.M. Drifter Restore. Christopher died on 12th of October 1915 at the age of 25.
Christopher was born at Kessingland on 3 October 1890, a son of James Thomas and Jane Charlotte Catchpole. In 1891 his family lived at Market Place, Kessingland, and by 1901 at Manor Cottages, Old Market, Kessingland.
A Lance Sergeant with 7th Bn., Albert died on 13th of October 1915 at the age of 28.
Albert was born at Beccles in 1887, a son of Thomas and Elizabeth Rackham. In 1891 his family lived at Denmark Road, Beccles. In 1901 their address was 3 Percy Terrace, Denmark Road, Beccles. By 1911 Albert was lodging at 1 Leiston Road, Lowestoft, and he worked as a manufacturer of ‘wearing apparel’.

Robert was born at Corton in 1889, a son of Frederick C and Emma Buttifant. He was baptised at Saint Bartholomew’s Church, Corton, on 6 January 1889. In 1891 his family lived at Mill Lane, Corton. By 1901 they were living at High Street, Corton. Later his parents lived at 1 Rose Cottage, Corton.
Robert joined the Metropolitan Police on 27 December 1909 and was a keen footballer and cricketer and member of the Police Athletic Club.

Albert was born at Kirkley on 15 June 1897, a son of Joseph and Harriett Dare. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Kirkley, on 25 July 1897. In 1901 his family lived at 18 Lawson Road, Kirkley, which was Albert’s home throughout his life.

In 1901 the family lived at 7-8 White Horse Street, Lowestoft, where Peter’s father was the publican, and Peter was an apprentice bricklayer. Later his mother lived at 22 Factory Street, Lowestoft.

He was baptised at Earsham on 16 February 1885 and his family lived at the Duke’s Head where his father was the publican. In 1891 they lived at Bungay Road, Ditchingham. By 1901 the family were living at 62 Edinburgh Road and Harry was a rope twine spinner. In 1911 they were still living at 62 Edinburgh Road and Harry was a general labourer.

In early 1901 Ernest lodged at 7 Surrey Street, Lowestoft, with Alfred Hales, Maud’s brother, and Ernest worked as a coachman.

In 1901 his family lived at Broad Lane, Little Plumstead. In 1911 they were living at Barnham Broom, Norfolk, and Walter worked in a garden. By 1914 his parents were living at Holly Gardens, Somerleyton.

His given names were Cuthbert Harry, but in many records, including military ones, he is shown as Harry Cuthbert. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Kirkley, on 9 April 1893. In 1901 his family lived at 389 London Road. In 1911 they were still living at 389 London Road and Harry was a bricklayer, possibly working with his father.

In 1891 he lived with his mother and brother at 7 Gun Lane, where his mother was housekeeper for William Andrews, and this was still their home in 1901. Louis was a pupil at Christ Church School and became a pupil at Saint Margaret’s School on 27 April 1896. In 1911 Louis’ family were still at 7 Gun Lane, and Louis worked as a wood sawyer at a saw mill. Later his mother lived at 17 Chapel Street, Lowestoft.

His father was the Rector at North Cove, Suffolk, and later Rector of Boxford, Suffolk. In 1901 his family lived at The Uplands, Carlton Colville, and in 1911 William was a pupil at Felsted School. Subsequently he was a farmer at The Uplands Estate, Carlton Colville.

Lewis was born at Hulver on 20th March 1895, a son of Charles and Laura Button. In 1911 Lewis lived with his parents at The Street, Hulver, and Lewis was a gardener.
Lewis married Lilian Wincup at Saint Peter's Church, Kirkley, on 24th August 1914. At that time Lewis was working as a fisherman and both he, and Lilian, lived at Kirkley (address unknown).

Ernest was born at Lowestoft on 21 June 1892, a son of William Walter and Alice Woolnough. He attended school in Kirkley.
Ernest married Emily George in 1912 and they lived at 4 Danish Cottages, Police Station Road, Lowestoft.
Ernest enrolled in the Royal Naval Reserve on 11 January 1915 and joined the drifter Datum on 16 January 1915.
On the night of 26-27 October 1916 the Datum was sunk by German destroyers. Ernest and the rest of the crew were lost when the Datum was sunk.

Frederick was born at Spexhall, Suffolk, on 21 June 1893, a son of John and Rose Saunders. Frederick's mother died when he was a child and he lived with his aunt Annie E. Thompson at 7 Beach Road, Lowestoft.
Frederick enrolled in the Royal Naval Reserve on 11 January 1915 and joined the drifter Datum on 16 January 1915.
During the night of 26-27 October 1916 the Datum was sunk by German destroyers. Frederick and all of the other members of the crew were lost.

By 1911 his mother had died and his family lived near the Fox Inn, Willingham Saint Mary’s, Suffolk, and Bertie was a farm labourer. By 1915 they were living at Cliff Cottage, High Road, Kessingland.

Francis was born at Carlton Colville on 9th November 1893, a son of William and Jessie Beamish of 186 The Avenue Lowestoft Suffolk.
Francis, like his father, was a fisherman. He joined the Royal Naval Reserve on 11th January 1915 and served on board the drifter 'Gleaner of the Sea'.

Frederick was born at Lowestoft on 30 January 1899, a son of George and Jemima Long. In 1901 his family lived at Rotterdam Road, Lowestoft. Frederick’s mother died in 1902. Frederick’s father married Emma page in 1904. In 1911 his family lived at 10 St Aubyns Road, Lowestoft. Later his parents lived at 31 Saint Peter’s Road, Lowestoft.

Henry was born at Kirkley on 28 September 1889, a son of James and Mary Collins. In 1891 his family lived at 20 Grosvenor Road. By 1901 Henry’s father had died and his family were resident at the Lothingland Union Workhouse.
In 1909 Henry married Violet Eva Cook at Lowestoft. By 1914 they were living at 82 Alexandra Road and later Violet lived at 114 Worthing Road.
Henry was awarded his certificate of competency as a skipper in 1913.

Charles was born at Lowestoft on 9 October 1878, a son of Charles and Harriett Doy. In 1881 his family lived at 58 Clemence Street.
In 1901 Charles was a seaman on the trawler Rose Bud, LT 594, at Newlyn. Charles was awarded his certificate of competency as a Second Hand in 1905.

William was born at Lowestoft on 2 September 1898, a son of John and Emma Jane Soanes. In 1901 his family lived at Boardley’s Yard, 1 East Street, Lowestoft. By 1911 his family were living at 6 Spurgeons Score.
William joined the Royal Naval Reserve on 16 August 1915. On 17 August 1915 he joined the trawler Orthes as a Deck Hand. On 2 September 1915 he was promoted to Engineman and joined the trawler Launch Out.

Francis was born at Corton on 8 November 1893, a son of Arthur and Charlotte Agnes Smith. He was baptised at Saint Bartholomew’s Church, Corton, on 3 December 1893. In 1901 his family lived at High Street, Corton. By 1911 they were living at 9 Worthing Road, and Francis was a drift net fisherman.
Francis joined the Royal Naval Reserve on 11 January 1915 and from 16 January 1915 he served on the trawler Coronne (sic) and he joined the Datum on 30 April 1915.

Benjamin was born at Lowestoft on 25 November 1889, a son of Alfred Charles and Elizabeth Chatteris. In 1891 his family lived at 85 Saint Margaret’s Road. By 1901 his mother had died and his family lived at Bishop’s Buildings, Mariners Street.
On 27 December 1914 Benjamin married Rosa Juler. Benjamin was a fisherman and they both gave their address as 29 Tennyson Avenue. They lived at 85 Kimberley Road, and later Rosa lived at 37 Payne Street.

In 1911 Sidney was the fourth hand on the Lowestoft trawler Ivan, at Padstow, Cornwall.

In 1891 his family lived at 12 Stanford Street and this was still the family home in 1901 when Robert was a sailmaker’s apprentice. By 1911 his family were living at 27 Stanford Street and Robert was a stoker on a steam-ship.

He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 1 April 1896, and his family lived at 5 Wesley Street, and this was still their home in 1901. By 1911 they were living at 1 Bishop’s Building, Mariners Street. Later Charles’ family lived at 21 Chapel Street.
Charles joined the Royal Naval Reserve on 11 January 1915 and from 16 January 1915 he served on the trawler Datum.

Frederick was born at Lowestoft in 1873, a son of Thomas Henry and Mary Ann Dowsing. In 1881 his family lived at Wright's Cottages, 1, Beccles Road, Lowestoft. From a young age Frederick went to sea and was a trawlerman. By 1894 his family was living at 3 Ipswich Road, Lowestoft.

Duncan was born on 16 July 1898 at Ellary, Argyllshire, a son of Joseph Fox Tarratt, Laird of Ellary, Ardrishaig, and the Isle of Coll, Argyllshire, and Mary Georgina Helen McNeill (or Rogers). In 1901 his family lived at Ellary Man House, South Knapdale, Argyllshire. In 1911 Duncan was a pupil at Evelyn’s School, Hillingdon, Uxbridge. Later his mother lived at of Clarendon, Lowestoft.
Duncan’s official name was Duncan MacNeill Fox Tarratt of Coll.

Thomas was born at Lowestoft on 12 July 1883, a son of Robert Crane and Elizabeth Claxton. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 2 September 1883. In 1891 his family lived at 2 Wide’s Score. By 1901 they were living at 121 Wollaston Road and Thomas was a coal dealer, probably working with his father.

Albert was born at Redisham, Suffolk, in 1881, a son of Charles and Mary Sarbutt. In 1891 his family lived at Halesworth Road, Redisham. Later his parents lived at Oulton Road, Lowestoft, before moving to Crossway Cottages, Blundeston.
In 1901 Albert, who was also known as John, or Jack, was a seaman working on the trawler Forward, LT 708, at Saint Ives, Cornwall.

Alfred was born at Lowestoft in 1883, a son of John and Hannah Eliza Crowford. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Kirkley, on 29 September 1883. In 1891 his family lived at Horn Hill. By 1901 they were living at 4 Mill Road, Horn Hill, and Alfred was a stationary engine cleaner.

Robert was born at Lowestoft in 1900, a son of Robert Willis and Margaret Ellen Lumsdaine. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 28 October 1900 and his family lived at 3 Lincoln’s Buildings, The Beach. His parents married in 1900 and his younger half-siblings all had the surname Willis. By 1911 his family were living at 1 Lincoln’s Buildings, Whapload Road, and later at 194 Clapham Road.

No details of William’s parents, or background before 1902, are known. He may have been born at Lowestoft in 1871.
On 21 January 1902 William married Frances Agnes Portle at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft. William was a fisherman living at Rotterdam Road and Frances lived at Saint Peter’s Street. Neither of them gave their fathers’ details. In 1911 they lived at 6 High Street and later Frances lived at 40 Crown Street. Frances married James Cross in 1926.
A Seaman with Steam Drifter Reliance (Lowestoft), Henry died on 7th of October 1917 at the age of 15.
Henry was born at Lowestoft on 25 January 1902, a son of Henry Charles and Ethel Maud Day. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church on 25 April 1902 and his family lived at 26 Melbourne Road. In 1911 his family lived at 15 Edinburgh Road and later at 125 Saint Margaret's Road. Later still, his mother lived at 8 Albany Road, Lowestoft.
An Able Seaman with Hawke Battalion, Harold died on 9 October 1917, at the age of 27.
Harold was born at Clapham on 29 June 1889, a son of Edwin Charles and Emily Bird. In 1901 his family lived at 32 Crater (sic) Road, Brixton, London, and by 1911 they were living at 40 Montrose Avenue, West Kilburn.
Before moving to Lowestoft Harold has resided at 11 Piccadilly, Manchester.
A Warrant Telegraphist with H.M.S. Champagne, Charles died on 9th of October 1917 at the age of 23.
Charles was born at East Bergholt, Suffolk, on 4 December 1893, a son of George and Susannah Stannard. In 1901 Charles’ family lived at The Police Station, Tavern Street, Stowmarket, where his father was a police inspector. By 1911 they were living at 33 Cobbold Street, Ipswich. Later they lived at 57 Levington Road, Ipswich, before moving to 29 Carlton Road, Pakefield.
A Captain with the 1/7th Battalion, Robert died on 9th of October 1917 at the age of 31.
Robert was born at Nassington, Northamptonshire, in 1886, a son of Joseph Alfred and Annie Katherine Hoare. In 1891 his family lived at Nassington. Robert’s parents continued to live at Nassington until 1920 when they moved to Lowestoft, living at 294 London Road, and then 50 Acton Road.
A Deck Hand with H.M. Trawler Waltham, Michael died on 10th of October 1917 at the age of 24.
Michael was born at Lowestoft on 25 July 1893, a son of Michael and Caroline Holland. In 1901 his family lived at 35 Lorne Park Road, Kirkley.

Walford was born at Hanford, Norfolk, in 1885, a son of George and Susanna Watts. He was baptised at Hainford parish church on 19 April 1885. Walford's mother died, and his father remarried. By 1891 his family was living at Stokesby with Herringfleet, and by 1901 they were living at Thorpe next Haddiscoe and Walford worked as a stockman on a farm (possibly Hall Farm). Later his father and step-mother, Rachel, lived at Crossway Cottages, Blundeston.

Thomas was born at Hulver in 1887, a son of George and Amy Louisa Moore. In 1891 his family lived at 98 Cambridge Road, Lowestoft. By 1901 Thomas' father had died and his family lived at 37 Crown Street. In 1911 his family lived at 38 Lawson Road and Thomas worked as a machine minder at a printers.
Thomas married Florence Martha Smith at Lowestoft in 1916. Their home was at 29 Roman Road, Lowestoft.
A Private with the 8th Battalion, George died on 12th of October 1917 at the age of 35.
It is difficult to say exactly where George was born as three different records state three different places. Also, when George enlisted in the Army he claimed to be 38 years and 7 months old, when in fact he was only 32.
We do know that he was a son of James and Sarah Ann Spoore and that he was born around 1882. It is possible that he was born at Wednesfield, Staffordshire.
A Company Sergeant Major with the 8th Battalion, Henry died on 12th of October 1917 at the age of 25.
Henry, sometimes known as Harry, was born at Bayswater in 1892, a son of Ebenezer Edward and Sarah Emma Backhouse. In 1901 his family lived at Chantry Road, Saxmundham, and in 1911 their address was 9 Chantry Road, Saxmundham, and Henry worked as a bottler at a mineral water company. Later his mother lived at 8 Chantry Road.
A Sergeant with the 8th Battalion, Arthur died on 12th of October 1917 at the age of 26.
Arthur was born at Worlingham, Suffolk, in 1892. It is not possible, at this time, to state who is parents were. In 1901 he lived at Beccles Road, Mutford, with his grandmother Matilda Woolnough, and in 1911 they lived at Hulver Road, Mutford, and Arthur was a fisherman.

George was born at Ilketshall Saint Andrew, Suffolk, in 1877, a son of James and Ellen Smith. In 1881 his family lived at Saint Lawrence Road, Ilketshall Saint Andrew. By 1891 they were living at Hulver Street, Henstead, and George was an agricultural labourer.
A Private with 7th Bn. Percy died on 12th of October 1917 at the age of 20.
Percy was born at Lowestoft in 1897, a son of James G. and Bridget A. Pye. In 1901 his family lived at 4 Rant Score East, and by 1911 they were living at 135 Whapload Road, Lowestoft.
Percy enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft. Initially he served with the Essex Regiment, number 276396, and was in the 5th Battalion. He was then transferred to The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment) and served with the 3/4th Battalion, number T/273049, before being posted to the 7th Battalion.
A Private with the 7th Battalion, Stanley died on 13th of October 1917 at the age of 20.
Stanley was born at Ditchingham, Norfolk, in 1894, a son of James and Alice E. Hadingham. In 1901 they lived at Cypress Cottage, Oulton, by 1911 they were living at 4 Park Road Cottages, Rock Estate, Oulton Broad, and Stanley worked as a carter. Later in 1911 he began work as a general labourer for the Great Eastern Railway at Lowestoft.
A Gunner with A Battery, 162nd Brigade, Godfrey died on 14th of October 1917 at the age of 36.
Godfrey was born at Stoke Newington, London, in 1881, a son of Joseph and Emily Smee. In 1891 his family lived at 162 Boleyn Road, Stoke Newington. In 1901 Godfrey lived with his brother Frederick, and family, at 160 Boleyn Road, and Godfrey was a gold jeweller.
A Private with the 7th Battalion, Ambrose died on 14th of October 1917.
Ambrose was born at Norton, Loddon, in 1887, a son of John and Emma Warnes. In 1891 his family lived at Staithe Dam, Norton Subcourse, near Loddon. By 1901 they were living at Ferry Road, Norton Subcourse, and Ambrose was a general agricultural labourer. Later his parents lived at Raveningham.
A Trooper with the Household Battalion, William died on 14th of October 1917 at the age of 28.
William was born at Dudley, Worcestershire, a son of William James and Henrietta Surrell. In 1891 his family lived at 135 Whitehall Road, West Bromwich, Staffordshire, and, by 1901, at 70 Dock Cottages, Poplar, London. Later, and before the First World War, his family moved to King’s Lynn. Subsequently they lived at 19 Sydenham Place, Ottley Road, Bradford.

A Lance Corporal with the 5th Battalion, John died on 17th of October 1917 at the age of 41.
John was born at Lowestoft on 18 October 1877, a son of George Samuel and Clara Steel. In 1881 his family lived at 5 Nelson Street. From 28 March 1887 John attended Saint Margaret’s School. In 1881 his family lived at 52 Mariners Street. By 1891 they were living at 281 Raglan Street, and John worked as a page.
A Trimmer with H.M. Trawler Vitality, Thomas died on 20th of October 1917 at the age of 30.
Thomas was born at Covehithe, Suffolk, on 4 November 1886, a son of James Martin Read and Jane Read. In 1891 his family lived near the Coastguard Station, Covehithe and they were still living at Covehithe in 1901.
A Private with the 8th Battalion, Fred died on 22nd of October 1917 at the age of 22.
Fred was born at Norwich in 1895, a son of Frederick William and Alice Phoebe Howard. In 1901 his family lived at 33 Norfolk Street, Heigham, Norwich, and by 1911 at 259 Heigham Street, Norwich. Later they moved to Lowestoft and lived at 7 Selby Street (this was still their home in 1939). In 1911 Fred worked as a machine hand at a boot manufacturers.
A Private with the 8th Battalion, Frederick died on 23rd of October 1917 at the age of 37.
Frederick was born at Barnby, Suffolk, in 1881. He was a grandson of Jonathan and Mary Girling and is believed to have been the son of their daughter Hannah. If so, he was baptised at Barnby on 13 February 1882.
A Skipper, with the Fishing Vessel Vanguard (Lowestoft) Henry died on 24 October 1917, at the age of 68.
Henry was born at Geldeston in 1849, a son of James and Jemima Alger. He weas baptised at Geldeston Parish Church on 18 November 1849. In 1851 his family lived 'On Dam' at Geldeston and in 1861 they lived 'Near Common' at Geldeston.
On 13 October 1870 Henry married Charlotte Baldry at Geldeston. They both lived at Geldeston and Henry was a fisherman. The 1871 Census shows Henry working on the Pride of Shannon at Lowestoft.
A Private with the 3/6th Battalion, Herbert died on 24th of October 1917 at the age of 27.
Herbert was born at Woodbridge, Suffolk, on 13 July 1890, a son of John and Martha Copping. He was baptised at Woodbridge on 31 August 1890. In 1891 his family lived at Cumberland Street, Woodbridge. By 1901 they were living at 17 Hamilton Street, Ramsey, Essex, and this was still their home in 1911.
A Third Hand with Fishing Vessel Vanguard (Lowestoft), Edward died on 24th of October 1917 at the age of 36.
His given name in Belgium was Eduardus Gustavus Blommaert.
Edward was born at Ostend, Belgium, on 8 October 1886, a son of Basilius and Paulina Blommaert. Edward married Malvina Maria Vanloo some time before 1908. It seems that they moved to Britain after the beginning of the First World War and in 1916 Malvina was living at Edmonton, London. Later she lived at 32 Kimberly Road, Lowestoft.
A Second Hand with Fishing Vessel Vanguard (Lowestoft), Sidney died on 24th of October 1917 at the age of 33.
Sidney was born at Norwich on 20 November 1884, a son of John and Martha E. Kerrison. In 1891 his family lived at (16) Lion and Castle Yard, Norwich. From 23 March 1897 Sidney attended Red House Farm School, Buxton, Norfolk. He spent some time working at Holly Farm, Tivetshall Saint Mary, before moving to Willow Farm, Framington. By mid-1903 he was working at sea.
A Cook with Fishing Vessel Vanguard (Lowestoft), Redan died on 24th of October 1917 at the age of 14.
Redan was born at Lowestoft in 1903, a son of Redan Welton and Edith Maud Jeffries. In 1911 his family lived at 97 Bevan Street and later at 26 Haward Street, Lowestoft.
On the morning of 24 October 1917 the trawler Vanguard (LT 722) sailed from Lowestoft and went north apparently to fish off Happisburgh. The trawler was never seen again and it was assumed the trawler was lost through enemy action.

Henry was born at Great Yarmouth on 6 July 1864, a son of Henry Charles and Susan Shimmon. He was baptised at Saint Nicholas' Church, Great Yarmouth, on 10 January 1869. In 1871 his family lived at Row 140, Great Yarmouth. In 1881 Henry was living at Victoria Road, Southwold, with his uncle and aunt, John and Mary Welton, and Henry worked as a twine spinner.

William attested for the Army, at Lowestoft, on 15 November 1915 and was placed on the Class B reserve. At the time he was living at Flixton Run, near Lowestoft, and working as a gardener.
A Deck Hand with H.M. Trawler Territorial. Robert died on 27th of October 1917 at the age of 49.
Robert was born at Beccles on 14 March 1868, a son of Robert and Mary Maddis. Some sources suggest that he was born at Mutford on 20 May 1875, but these are not corroborated, and Robert appears in the 1871 Census living with his family at Ingate Road, Beccles. Note that his surname is variously given as Maddis and Maddiss.
A Private with 129 Coy., Charles died on 27th of October 1917 at the age of 39.
Charles was born at Lowestoft in 1878, a son of Edmund and Elizabeth Mantripp. Note that in some records his first name is given as Ramsey, or Ramey, and in others as Raymond. In 1881 his family lived at 22 North Raglan Street, Lowestoft. By 1891 they were living at 23 Jacob's Street. In 1911 they lived at 25 Cathcart Street, Lowestoft, and Charles worked for the Great Eastern Railway Company as a painter plumber.
A Boy Cook with H.M. Trawler John Pascoe, Frederick died on 28th of October 1917 at the age of 17.
Frederick was born at Flixton on 11 March 1900, a son of Robert and Mary Ann Sexbury. In 1901 his family lived at The Street, Flixton. By 1911 they were living at Saint Mary’s Terrace, Flixton Road, Bungay. Later his parents lived at 23 Ipswich Road, Lowestoft, then 62 High Street, and then 44 Princes Road.
From 8 April 1907 to 18 April 1913 Robert was a pupil at Bungay Boys School.
A Private with the 1st Battalion, Benjamin died on 29th of October 1917 at the age of 38.
Benjamin was born at Catton, Norwich in 1879, a son of Benjamin and Agnes Keturch Moates. In 1881 his family lived at Philadelphia Cottages, Norwich, and in 1891 their address was 115 Philadelphia Lane, Norwich. In 1892 Benjamin was summoned for throwing a stone at a neighbour and fined two shillings and six pence. By 1895 the family were living at Haddiscoe.
A Private with 15th (Suffolk Yeomanry) Bn., Robert died on 31st of October 1917 at the age of 35.
Robert was born at Carlton Colville in 1884, a son of Henry and Mary Ann Hawkes. He was baptised at Saint Peter's Church, Carlton Colville, on 22 February 1885. A marginal note in the baptism register at Saint Peter's reads: 'Died for England in the Great War.'
A Gunner with 326th Siege Battery, James died on 31st of October 1917 at the age of 19.
James was born at Kirkley on 28 April 1898, a son of James and Bessie Ward (note her first initial is also given as A). In 1901 his family lived at 2 Morton Road, Kirkley, and by 1911 they were living at 57 Morton Road. By 1916 they were living at 30 Clemence Street and later they lived at 98 Norwich Road, Lowestoft.
James attended Morton Road County Council School and subsequently worked at the Conservative Club, Lowestoft.
A Lance Corporal with the 11th Battalion, Charles died on 1st of October 1918 at the age of 23.
Charles was born at Lowestoft in 1895, a son of James and Jane Anne Cook. He was baptised at Saint John’s Church on 3 January 1896 and his family lived at 98 Clemence Street. In 1901 his family lived at 43 Clemence Street. Charles attended Hervey Street School and, from 2 February 1903, was a pupil at Saint John’s School. In 1911 his family lived at 28 Stevens Street and Charles was a milk can ‘hand’ with a dairy.
A Sapper with 70th Motor Air Line Section, Sidney died on 1st of October 1918 aged 22.
Sidney was born at Lowestoft in 1896, a son of James and Emma Frances Brown. He was baptised at Saint John’s Church on 7 June 1896 and his family lived at 14 Selby Street. By 1911 his family were living at 101 Beresford Road, and Sidney was a telegraph messenger boy. In 1912 Sidney became as assistant postman at Lowestoft and, according to the Post Office memorial books for World War One, he was working for the Post Office’s Eastern Engineering Department when he joined the Army.
A Private with the 57th Battalion, Herbert Card died on 2nd of October 1918 aged 20.
Herbert was born at Lowestoft in 1898, a son of James and Martha Ellen Edmonds. He was baptised at Saint John's Church, on 6 November 1898. At that time his family lived at 13 Wollaston Road. By 1911 they had moved to 44 Bevan Street.
A Deck Hand with H.M. Drifter Coleus, Percy died on 4th of October 1918 at the age of 24.
Percy, also shown in some sources as Percival, was born at Kirkley on 5 January 1898, a son of William Charles and Eliza Bullard. From 7 January 1901 Percy attended Kirkley School and his family lived at 12 Lovewell Road. By 1911 Percy’s mother had died and his family lived at 8 Flora Terrace, Carlton Road. In 1915 Percy lived at 5 Saint John’s Road.
An Engineman with H.M.S. Queen. Sidney died on 5th of October 1918 at the age of 28.
Sidney was born at Lowestoft on 7 July 1890, a son of George Henry and Elizabeth Reynolds. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 25 July 1890 and his family lived at 23 High Street and this was still thier home in 1891. By 1901 they were living at the Heart of England Public House, Whapload Road, where is father was the publican. In 1911 the family home was at 22 Whapload Road.
A Private with the 9th Battalion, Bertie died on 5th of October 1918 aged 26.
Bertie was born at Carlton Colville in 1892, a son of George and Matilda Frances Manning. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Carlton Colville, on 10 September 1893. In 1901 his family lived at Worcester Terrace, Carlton Colville. By 1911 they were living at 10 Severn Terrace, Kirkley Run, and Bertie was a labourer.

A Private with the 14th Battalion, Wesley died on 7th of October 1918 aged 37.
Wesley was born at Lowestoft on 27 November 1881, a son of James and Eva Dawson. His given names were William Wesley but when he enlisted, he gave Wesley as his first name. In 1891 his family lived at 88 Bevan Street, and this was still their home in 1901 when Wesley, like his father, was a plasterer. In 1911 Wesley was still working as a plasterer and his family lived at 80 May Road. Later his parents lived at 117 Wollaston Road.
A Lance Corporal with 15th (Suffolk Yeomanry) Battalion, Ernest died on 7th of October 1918 aged 19.
Ernest was born at Lowestoft in 1898, a son of Ernest and Harriet Ruffles. In 1901 his family lived at 30 Lovewell Road and by 1911 they were living at 70 Lovewell Road.
Ernest enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft. He joined the Suffolk Regiment, service number 2300, and was posted to the 1st Battalion in France. Later he was posted to the 15th Battalion, with service number 320306.
An Ordinary Seaman with R.N. Depot (Crystal Palace), William died on 8th of October 1918 at the age of 18.
William was born at Kirkley on 4 September 1900, a son of William James and Lily Mary Youngman. In 1901 his family lived at 44 Ipswich Road, Lowestoft, and by 1911 they were living at 18 John Street, Lowestoft. Later his father lived at 5 Grosvenor Road, Lowestoft, and his mother at 18 John Street.
William was a munitions worker when he joined the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve on 2 March 1918.

Percy was a pupil at Roman Hill School until 11 June 1906 when he joined Saint John’s School. By 1906 Percy's family were living at 83 Rotterdam Road. In 1911 Percy was a bricklayer’s labourer. In 1916 his mother lived at 5 Avondale Road. Later she lived at 79 Norwich Road.

Stanley was born at Barnby on 30 May 1899, a son of Walter James and Amelia Marcella Baxter. He was baptised at Saint John the Baptist Church, Barnby, on 25 June 1899. In 1901 his family lived at Barnby Green. In 1911 their address was 'near the Post Office, Barnby Green.'

It seems that Frederick’s birth was registered in the Wangford district in 1904 and some Merchant Navy records state that he was born at Barsham, Suffolk. Commonwealth War Graves records state that his parents were Charles and Sarah West, but no civil records have been traced that verify this.
In 1928 Federick married Daisy E Sheldrake, this was registered in the Depwade district. By 1939 their home was at 18 Lowestoft Road, Carlton Colville. Later Daisy remarried.

Ernest was born at Battersea, London, on 21 September 1906, a son of William and Mildred Whiting. On 8 November 1909 Ernest became a pupil at Bildeston School. In 1911 his family lived at Bildeston, near Ipswich (note that the 1911 and 1921 Census Ernest is shown as Walter). In 1921 his family lived at 2 Russell Terrace, Fir Lane, Lowestoft, and by 1939 their address was 17 Fir Lane.

Son of Herbert and Annie Turrell of Lowestoft Suffolk. Clement was born at Lowestoft on 18 July 1918. Clement's father died in September 1918 while serving with the Royal Naval Reserve. In 1921 Clement's family lived at 2 Bungalow, Hulver Road, Mutford. By 1939 his mother was living at 9 Clemence Street, Lowestoft.

Frederick was born at Oulton on 20 February 1903, a son of Samuel and Emma Eliza Stebbings. In 1911 his family lived at Oulton Street, Oulton. Later their home was at 8 Meadow Cottages, Oulton, Lowestoft.
Frederick enrolled in the Royal Naval Reserve on 16 March 1933, and re-enrolled in 1938.

By 1901 they were living at 17 Beckham Road and Arthur was a saw mill hand. In 1911 they were living at 18 Maidstone Road and Arthur was a wood sawyer at a joinery.

Leslie’s mother died in 1926, and Leslie became the foster-son of his aunt Mildred Jane Searles. In 1939 his family home was at 26 Lorne Park Road, Lowestoft.

Before the war Robert lived at Wodehouse, Headley, Bordon, Hampshire. He managed the Baldpate Poultry Farm and was a member of Headley Cricket Club.

Clifford was born at Ipswich on 14 July 1907, a son of Herbert Walter and Ethel May Brewster. In 1911 his family lived at 26 Norwich Road, Ipswich. Clifford was educated at Mrs. Goves School, Berners Street, Ipswich. From 16 September 1914 to 24 July 1919 Clifford attended Northgate Grammar School, Ipswich, and was then a pupil at Woodbridge Grammar School. James was working as a salesman when he joined the Suffolk Regiment and served with 3 Company in the 4th Battalion.
A Private with the 4th Battalion, Douglas died on 5th of October 1943 aged 26.
Douglas was born at Lowestoft on 16 July 1917, a son of Herbert and Mary Miller. In 1921 his family lived at 89 Beresford Road. B y 1939 they were living at 133 Saint Peter’s Street and Douglas was a wood machinist’s mate.
A Sergeant with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, Kenneth died on 9th of October 1943 aged 20.
It seems that Kenneth was born at Huntingdon on 2 September 1923, a son of John William and Isobel Clara Saunders. In 1939 his family lived at 36 Monckton Avenue, and Kenneth was an apprentice electrician.
Kenneth enlisted in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve after April 1941. By October 1943 he was an Air Bomber serving with 106 Squadron based at Syerston, Nottinghamshire.
A Private with the 5th Battalion, Charles died on 14th of October 1943 aged 26.
Charles was born at Lowestoft on 13 February 1917, a son of George Valentine and Ethel Honor Snelling. In 1921 his family lived at 310 Raglan Street. By 1939 their home was at 74 Milton Road and Charles was a bricklayer’s labourer.
A Private with the 6th Battalion, Richard died on 20 October 1943 at the age of 25.
Richard was born at Lowestoft on 9 October 1918, a son of Ernest Edward and Syrena Breach. A note in prisoner of war records suggests that Richard was born at 19 Saint Aubyns Road, Pakefield. In 1921 his family lived at 12 Carlton Road, and this was still their home when Richard’s father died in 1934.
A Skipper with H.M. Trawler Orfasy, Alexander died on 22nd of October 1943 at the age of 35.
Alexander was born at Beccles on 30 August 1907, a son of Charles Benjamin and Harriet Mary Soanes. By 1911 his family were living at 4 Pretoria Terrace, Hall Road, Oulton Broad. In 1921 they lived at Waveney Cottages, Aldeby.
A Fusilier with the 1st Battalion, Lewis died on 23rd of October 1943 aged 23.
Lewis was born at Great Yarmouth on 26 March 1920, a son of Walter Douglas and Gladys Brown. He was baptised at Saint Nicholas’ Church, Great Yarmouth, on 15 June 1920 and his family lived at Kirkmans (sic) Passage, Row 34. In 1921 they were living at 38 Lincoln Street, Norwich. In 1939 they lived at 41 Fir Lane, Lowestoft.
In 1939 Lewis married Constance Esther Edith Jenner. In September 1939 they lived at 33B Alexandra Road and Lewis was a bricklayer.
A Skipper with H.M. Trawler William Stephen. James died on 25th of October 1943 at the age of 36.
James was born at Penzance, Cornwall, on 29 August 1907, a son of James and Elizabeth Kate Peck. By 1911 his family were living at High Street, Kessingland. By 1921 his family were living at 61 Beaconsfield Road, Lowestoft, and later they lived at 60 Waveney Crescent.
James served with the Royal Naval Reserve from 31 March 1932. He worked on the trawler Constant Friend, LT 1172, and from late 1932 with the trawler Watchman.
A Lance Sergeant with 621 Field Squadron, William died on 31st of October 1943 at the age of 28.
William was born at Lowestoft on 12 September 1915, a son of Richard Archer and Martha Elizabeth Armes. He was baptised at Saint John’s Church, Lowestoft, on 8 December 1915, and his family lived at 36 Saint John’s Road, Lowestoft. By 1921 they were living at 28 Union Road, Lowestoft.
William married May Moody in 1937, this was registered in the Pancras district of London. Later Mary lived at 24 Ednell Road South, Boreham Wood, and later at 10 Auckland Road, Potters Bar
A Skipper with H.M.L.C.T. 377, Cecil died on 4th of October 1944 at the age of 36.
Cecil was born at Carlton Colville on 13 August 1908, a son of Arthur and Anna Barber. In 1911 his family were living at 10 Oulton Street, Lowestoft, and this was still their address in 1921.
On 8 September 1934 Cecil married Rita Mary Victoria Catchpole at All Saints Church, Pakefield. Cecil was a fisherman living at Wood Farm, Oulton, and Rita lived at 18 Carlton Road, Pakefield.
A Sergeant with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, Bernard died on 4th of October 1944 aged 21.
Bernard was born on 17 February 1923, a son of Frank Nelson and Lily Beatrice Barker. In 1939 his family lived at The Police Station, Mendham, where his father was a Police Constable. Bernard worked from the London and North Eastern Railway at Harleston Station and was a well known sportsman, playing cricket and football with local clubs.
By 1944 Bernard’s parents were living at 10 Lorne Park Road, Lowestoft, and later they lived at 50 Worthing Road.
A Sergeant with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, Jack died on 5th of October 1944 aged 22.
Jack was born at Croydon, Surrey, on 14 April 1922, a son of John William and of Lilian Gertrude Boutle. In 1939 his family lived at 1 Union Place and Jack was a fruiterer’s shop assistant.
Jack enlisted in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve after June 1940. By October 1944 Jack was a Flight-Engineers with 101 Squadron, based at Ludford Magna, Lincolnshire.
A Private with the 5th Battalion, Albert died on 9th of October 1944 aged 18.
Albert was born at Lowestoft on 23 July 1926, a son of Edward and Edith Daines. In 1939 his family lived at 3 Malletts Opening, Mariners Street, Lowestoft.
In early October 1944 the 5th Battalion, as part of 152 Brigade, were in positions in the vicinity of Best, near Eindhoven. The Germans shelled Best during 9 October and on the night of 9-10 October enemy mortars were very active.
A Civilian, Elsie died on 10th of October 1944 aged 52.
Elsie was born at Sheffield on 2 August 1892, a daughter of Harry and Clara Elizabeth Rollett. She was baptised at Saint Barnabas Church, Highfield, Sheffield, on 21 August 1892, and her family lived at 48 Highfield Place, Sheffield. By 1901 her family were living at High Street, Wrentham, Suffolk, and in 1911 their home was at Belfast House, High Street, Wrentham.
A Lance Sergeant with the 1st Battalion, Stanley died on 14th of October 1944 aged 25.
Stanley was born at Kirkley on 11 September 1919, a son of Thomas William and May Annie Cook. In 1921 his family lived at 192 The Avenue, and this was till their home in 1939 when Stanley was an apprentice printer.
Stanley served in north-west Europe with the 1st Battalion Royal Norfolk Regiment. His battalion landed at Normandy on D-Day.
A Lance Corporal with the 7th Battalion, Victor died on 15th of October 1944 aged 22.
Victor was born at Lowestoft on 26 July 1922, a son of Charles Stewart and Annie Dora Elisabeth Longthorne. In 1939 his family lived at 12 Fir Lane and Victor was a painter.
A Stoker 1st Class with H.M.L.C.T. 7014, Donald died on 18th of October 1944 at the age of 21.
Donald was born at Lowetsoft on 15 May 1923, a son of William James and Ivy Susannah Pratt. In 1921 his family had lived at the rear of 10A Saint John's Road, Lowestoft, and by 1939 had moved to 59 Saint John's Road.
Donald was serving on board Landing Craft Tank 7014 when the vessel foundered in a storm, off Land's End. All nine of the crew were killed.
A Private with the 1st Battalion, Hugh died on 23rd of October 1944 aged 24.
Hugh was born at Chillesford, Suffolk, on 20 September 1920, a son of Harry and Elizabeth Knights. In 1921 his family lived at The Street, Chillisford. By 1939 their address was ‘Rear of the Fire Station’, Saint Peter’s Street, Lowestoft, and Hugh was an assistant at a hardware store.
A Fireman with Fishing Vessel Craigewan (Milford Haven), William died on 12th of October 1945 aged 40.
Henry was born at Lowestoft on 11 February 1905, a son of Samuel George and Lucy Ann Brady. In 1911 his family lived at 1 Bishop’s Buildings, Mariners Street, and later at 21 Chapel Street. In 1921 his family lived at 94 Seago Street.
On 5 September 1931 Henry married Florence Kathleen Saunder at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft. Henry was a barman living at 94 Seago Street and Florence lived at 43 Norwich Road. In 1939 they lived at 94 Seago Street and Herny was a casual Post Office worker. Later Florence lived at 5 Payne Street.
A Civilian, Frederick died on 20th of October 1946 aged 39.
Frederick was born at Willesden, London. on 29 January 1907, a son of Henry and May North. In 1911 his family lived at 5A New Buildings, Kingsgate Road, Kilburn.
On 4 August 1926 Frederick, who was working as a carman, enlisted in the Army and served with the 11th Hussars before joining the 3rd Hussars in 1927, He joined the Army Reserve on 8 December 1932.
An Able Seaman with H.M.S. Copra, George died on 8th of October 1947 aged 34.
George was born at Kessingland on 17 September 1913, a son of George Ernest and Elizabeth Margaret Hart. He was baptised at Saint Edmund’s Church, Kessingland, on 16 November 1913 and his family lived at Davy’s Cottages, The Beach, Kessingland. In 1939 his family were living at 64 Crown Street and George was a fisherman and a member of the naval reserve.
In 1939 George married Ellen May Tapsell, this was registered in the Lothingland district. By 1947 their home was at 10 Marham Road.
