Thomas Rose
Died:

A Captain with the 1st Bn. Thomas died on 23rd of August 1914 at the age of 40. 

Thomas was born at Aldershot on 17 August 1874, a son of Major Thomas Chapel Rose, of the Army Pay Corps, and Mrs. Augusta Decima Rose. Thomas' father died in 1890. In 1891 his family lived at Sunny Side, Severn Bank, Shrewsbury. Thomas' mother's maiden name was Leathes. She had been born at Herringfleet and related to the Leathes-Prior family. By 1911 his mother was living at 383 London Road, Lowestoft. 

Walter Edward Bunn
Died:

A Private with 1st Bn. Walter died on 24th of August 1914 at the age of 32. 

Walter was born at Pakefield on 12 June 1882, a son of Charles and Anna Bunn. He was baptised at All Saints Church, Pakefield, on 8 June 1884, From 19 October 1885 he attended Cunningham School, Pakefield. In 1891 his family lived at 2 Mickleburgh Cottages, Mill Road, Pakefield. From 7 September 1891 Walter attended Saint Margaret's School. In 1901 his family lived at 10 Wellington Cottages, Clapham Road,  and Walter worked as a labourer and later as a blacksmith. 

Died:

A Sergeant with 1st Bn. Walter died on 24th of August 1914 at the age of 40. 

Walter was born at Kirkley in 1874, a son of Eliza Chilvers. He was baptised at Saint Peter's Church, Kirkley, on 18 March 1875. In 1881 his family lived at 25 Southwell Place, Lowestoft, and by 1891 at Elizabeth Cottage, Southwell Road, and Walter worked as a grocery storekeeper. Later his mother lived at 55 Southwell Road, Lowestoft.

Walter enlisted in the Army at Norwich in 1896. He joined the Norfolk Regiment.  

George William Knights
Died:

A Private with 1st Bn. George died on 24th of August 1914 at the age of 29. 

George was born at Lowestoft on 17 December 1883, a son of Charles Owen and Margaret Knights. Throughout his life George's family lived at 18 Alma Road, Lowestoft. George was baptised at Saint John's Church, Lowestoft, on 7 March 1886.

John Charles Breach
Died:

A Private with the 2nd Battalion, John died on 26th of August 1914 at the age of 30. 

John was born at Lowestoft on 30 July 1884, a son of Henry (Harry) and Maria Breach. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church in 1884. In 1891 his family lived at 18 Haward Street and in 1901 at the Waggon and Horses Public House, Rant Score East, and John was a general labourer. Later his parents lived at 2 Cooks Buildings, Whapload Road. 

Christopher Mantel Wren
Died:

A Private with 7th Bn. Christopher died on 2nd of August 1915 at the age of 17. 

Christopher was born at Lowestoft in 1898, a son of Walter and Maude Mary Wren. In 1901 his family lived at 139 Clapham Road, Lowestoft, and this was Christopher's home throughout his life.

Ernest volunteered soon after the outbreak of war and enlisted in the Suffolk Regiment at Lowestoft. He served with the 7th Battalion and arrived in France with the Battalion on 30 May 1915. 

The War Diary of the 7th Battalion has the following entry for 1 August 1915:

A Trooper with 10th (Nelson) Squadron, Arthur died on 6th of August 1915. 

Arthur was born at Bungay on 6 March 1885, a son of Lewis and Frances Mary Bull. In 1891 his family lived at Flixton Road, Bungay. By 1901 his father had died and his mother lived at Florence House, Florence Terrace, Pakefield. By 1911 his mother, and sisters, lived at Providence Lodge, London Road, Lowestoft. 

John William Reynolds
Died:

A Second Lieutenant with the 4th Battalion, John died on 7th of August 1915 at the age of 28. 

John was born at Keswick, Norwich, on 5 April 1887, a son of John William and Agnes Lucy Reynolds. He was baptised at Intwood, with Keswick, on 3 May 1887, and his family lived at Keswick. In 1891 his family lived at The Farm House, Mill Road, Keswick. By 1901 their home was The Poplars, London Road, Lowestoft.

Died:

Katie died on 9th August 1915 at the age of 18.

Katie, known as Kate, was born at Pakefield on 24 April 1898, a daughter of Frederick Sidney and Jane Elizabeth Crawford of 18 Oaklands Terrace, Kessingland. 

Katie worked as a live-in kitchen maid for Arthur Stebbings who had a shop at 12 Lovewell Road, Kirkley. 

At 10.30 p.m. on Monday 9th August 1915 a German zeppelin bombed Lowestoft. One of the bombs fell on 12 Lovewell Road and Kate was killed. Her death certificate notes her cause of death as:

A Corporal with 1/5th Bn., Henry died on 12th of August 1915 at the age of 32. 

Henry was born at Pulham Market, Norfolk, in 1883, a son of Henry Edwin and Emma Howell. In 1891 his family lived at 41 Theatre Street, East Dereham. In 1901 his family lived at 39 A Thistle Terrace, Theatre Street, East Dereham, and Henry worked as a railway porter. This was still their address in 1911 and Henry worked as a general labourer. Later his family lived at 7 Beresford Road, Lowestoft.

William Thomas
Died:

A Private with 54th (1/1st East Anglian) Casualty Clearing Station, William died on 13th August 1915 at the age of 33.

William was born at Saint Ives, Cornwall, in 1882, a son of William and Sarah Jane Thomas. He was baptised at Saint Ives on 18 October 1882. By 1891 his family were living at 26 Beaconsfield Road, Kirkley. By 1901 they had moved to 59 Beaconsfield Road and William became a gasfitter's apprentice.  

By 1911 his family had moved to 32 Salisbury Road, Lowestoft, and William worked as a gas fitter. 

Christopher Clay
Died:

A Private with 54th (1/1st East Anglian) Casualty Clearing Station, Christopher died on 13th August 1915 at the age of 23.

Christopher was born at Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, in 1892, a son of George and Jemima Clay. Christopher's father died in 1897 and by 1901 his family were living at 40 Oxford Road, High Wycombe.

By 1911 Christopher had moved to Lowestoft and he lodged with Edward and Francis Mitchell, and family, at 19 Norwich Road. Christopher worked as a dental mechanician.  

Ernest William Roberts
Died:

A Sergeant 54th (1/1st East Anglian) Casualty Clearing Station, Ernest died on 13th august 1915 at the age of 35. 

Ernest was born at Ipswich in 1881, a son of Charles King and Emma Roberts. He was baptised at Saint Helen's Church, Ipswich, on 7th August 1881 and his family lived at 39 Wells Street, Ipswich. By 1891 his family were living at 132 Woodhouse Street, Ipswich. Later his parents lived at 249 Foxhall Road, Ipswich.

Harry Hayward Hall
Died:

A Private with 54th (1/1st East Anglian) Casualty Clearing Station, Harry died on 13th August 1915 at the age of 29.

Harry was born at Lowestoft on 26th March 1886, a son of Edward and Hannah Louisa Hall. He was baptised at Christchurch, Lowestoft, on 25th April 1886. In 1891 his family lived at 77 Saint Margaret's Road and by 1901 were living at 70 Oxford Road. Harry attended Lowestoft School of Art.

By 1911 his family had moved to 41 High Street, Lowestoft, and Harry worked as an insurance agent. 

Claude Henry Leeds
Died:

A Private with 54th (1/1st East Anglian) Casualty Clearing Station, Claude died on 13th of August 1915 at the age of 18. 

Claude was born at Lowestoft in 1896, a son of John and Ada Leeds. In 1901 his family lived at 9 Sandringham Road, Lowestoft. By 1911 they had moved to 3 Sandringham Road, and Claude worked as a butcher.  

Robert Samuel Mallett
Died:

A Private with 54th (1/1st East Anglian) Casualty Clearing Station, Robert died on 13th of August 1915 at the age of 38. 

Robert was born at Kessingland in 1876, a son of Alfred and Charlotte Mallett. His birth was registered as Samuel Robert. Robert was baptised at Saint Edmund's Church, Kessingland, on 26 November 1876. In 1881 his family lived at The Street, Kessingland, and by 1891 they had moved to Church Road, Kessingland. In 1901 Robert was living with his brother, Henry, and family, at 136 Saint Leonard's Road, Kirkley, Lowestoft, and Robert worked as a bricklayer.

Albert Henry Coleby
Died:

A Private with 7th Bn., Albert Henry died on 13th of August 1915 at the age of 20.

Albert was born at Blundeston in 1895, a son of Albert James and Hannah Coleby. Albert was baptised at Saint Mary's Church, Blundeston, on 18 November 1895. In 1901 his family lived at The Red Lion, The Street, Blundeston, where is father was both publican and a shoemaker. In 1911 they still lived at The Red Lion and Albert worked as a butcher.  

George William Brown
Died:

A Private with 54th (1/1st East Anglian) Casualty Clearing Station, George died on 13th of August 1915 at the age of 19. 

George was born at Lowestoft on 21 January 1896, a son of George Edward and Alice Maud Brown. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 12 February 1896 and his family lived at 2 Raglan Cottages. By 1901 his family was living at 66 Seago Street, Lowestoft. From 15 February 1904 George attended Saint Margaret's Boys School. By 1911 his family were living at 131 Rotterdam Road, Lowestoft, and George worked as a coal merchant's clerk. 

Harry Charles Poppy
Died:

A Private with 54th (1/1st East Anglian) Casualty Clearing Station, Harry died on 13th of August 1915 at the age of 19. 

Harry was born at Lowestoft on 13 November 1895, a son of Herbert Harry and Alice Poppy. In 1901 his family lived at 89 Arnold Street, Lowestoft. Harry attended Church Road School and then, from 20 April 1909, he attended Lowestoft School of Science. By 1911 Harry's family were living 127 High Street, Lowestoft, and Harry worked as a grocer's assistant (possible with his father). 

Charles Robert Oldfield
Died:

A Private with 54th (1/1st East Anglian) Casualty Clearing Station, Charles died on 13th of August 1915 at the age of 17.

Charles was born in Norwich in 1897, a son of Christopher Robert and Emma Oldfield. In 1901 his family lived at Yarmouth Road, Thorpe, Norwich. By 1911 his family were living at Park Hill Road, Oulton, Lowestoft, and Charles worked as a gardener's boy at a nursery (possibly with his father).  

Reginald Rowland Coates
Died:

A Private with 54th (1/1st East Anglian) Casualty Clearing Station, Reginald died on 13th of August 1915 at the age of 19. 

Reginald was born at Lowestoft in 1896, a son of William and Martha Coates. In 1901 his family lived at 76 Clapham Road, Lowestoft, and by 1911 they had moved to 39 Princes Road, Lowestoft. 

Reginald was living at 39 Princes Road when he volunteered and he joined the Army on 8 February 1915. He served with the local territorial unit of the Royal Army Medical Corps which became part of the 54th (1/1st East Anglian) Casualty Clearing Station. 

Henry William Smith
Died:

A Private with 54th (1/1st East Anglian) Casualty Clearing Station, Henry died on 13th of August 1915 at the age of 35. 

Henry was born at Norwich in 1883, a son of (John) William and Hannah (Anna E) Smith. In 1891 his family lived at 38 Goldsmith Street, Norwich. By 1901 they were living at 13 Willow Lane, Norwich, and Henry worked as a decorator and housepainter.  

Henry married Mabel Maria Smith, at Norwich, in 1908. 

Frank Reynolds
Died:

A Private with 54th (1/1st East Anglian) Casualty Clearing Station, Frank died on 13th of August 1915 at the age of 18.

Frank was born at Lowestoft in 1896, a son of Walter and Harriett Reynolds. In 1901 his family lived at Wards Cottages, Clapham Road, Lowestoft. By 1911 his family were living at 13 Clapham Road, Lowestoft. 

Samuel Augustus Pike
Died:

A Private with 3rd/1st East Anglian Field Ambulance, Samuel died on 13th of August 1915 at the age of 23.

Samuel was born at Lowestoft in 1892, a son of Henry and Annie E. Pike. In 1901 his family lived at 139 London Road, Lowestoft (Note that on the 1901 Census Samuel is shown as Edward A. Pike. We know that the entry is for the correct family because of the details of his parents and siblings).

George Sead Gowing
Died:

A Private with 2nd Bn., George died on 15th of August 1915 at the age of 33.

George was born at Lowestoft on 20 June 1882, a son of George Sead and Caroline Gowing. He was baptised at Christchurch, Lowestoft, on 23 July 1882. In 1891 his family lived at Anguish Street, Lowestoft. By 1901 George’s father had died and his family lived at Lifeboat Cottages, East Street, Lowestoft, and George was a fisherman.

A Deck Hand with H.M.S. Halcyon II., William died on 18th of August 1915 at the age of 19.

William was born at Gisleham on 30 December 1895, a son of Joseph and Maria Prior. He attended school at Gisleham before, on 17 May 1901, becoming a pupil at Cunningham School. In 1901 his family lived at 1 Carlton Road, Pakefield. In 1911 his family were living at Chamberlain's Cottages, Oulton Broad, and William was a drift net fisherman. Later his parents lived at Home Lea, Walmer Road, Lowestoft. 

Died:

A Signal Boy with H.M. Drifter Fearless., died on 26th of August 1915 at the age of 17. 

Ernest was born at Lowestoft on 15 July 1898, a son of Thomas William and Edith Gooch. He was baptised at Saint Mark's Church, Oulton Broad, on 15 February 1899. In 1901 his family lived at 60 Victoria Road, Carlton Colville. 

Died:

A Private with 7th Bn. Thomas died on 29th of August 1915 at the age of 25. 

Thomas was born at Kirkley in 1890, a son of George and Sarah Ann Secret. His mother died soon after Thomas was born.  

Ernest Arthur Patterson
Died:

A Drummer with the 8th Bn., Ernest died on 31st of August 1915 at the age of 19. 

Ernest was born at Oulton Broad in 1896, a son of George and Emma Patterson. In 1901 his family lived at Park Estate, Oulton, Lowestoft. In 1911 they lived at Edith Cottage, Commodore Road, Oulton Broad, and Ernest was a baker’s errand boy.   

Ernest volunteered and enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft. He joined the Suffolk Regiment and was posted to the 8th Battalion. He arrived in France with the Battalion on 25 July 1915. He served with A Company.

Died:

A Private with the 9th Battalion, Henry died on 1st of August 1916 at the age of 22. 

Henry, who was often known as Harry, was born at Stradbroke, Suffolk, in 1893, a son of Henry and Jemima Taylor. In 1901 his family lived at Swan Green Road, Cratfeld, Suffolk. By 1911 they had moved to Burnt Hill Pit, Beccles Road, Oulton Road, Lowestoft, and Henry was a cowman on a farm.

Henry volunteered and was enlisted in the Yorkshire Regiment at Thirsk, with service number 14625. He arrived in France, with the 9th Battalion, on 26 August 1915. 

Died:

An Engineman with H.M. Drifter Rooke, George died on 3rd of August 1916 at the age of 33. 

George was born at Blundeston on 9 August 1882, a son of Harry and Anna Darkins. He was baptised at Saint Mary’s Church, Blundeston, on 3 September 1883. In 1891 his family lived at The Street, Lound.  

On 19 September 1907 George married Harriet Jarvis. In 1911 they lived at 1 Wharfedale Place, Commodore Road, Oulton Broad, and George was a fisherman. Later Harriet lived at 3 Wharfedale Place. 

Died:

A Trimmer with H.M. Drifter Rooke, Joseph died on 3rd of August 1916 at the age of 26. 

Joseph was born at Lowestoft on 4 November 1891, a son of Arthur James and Jessie Eliza Jenner. In 1901 his family lived at 4 Forester’s Terrace, Kirkley. By 1911 they were living at 45 Morton Road and later at 3 Walmer Road, Lowestoft.

A Rifleman with 2/17th Bn., Charles William died on 7th of August 1916 at the age of 25.

Charles was born at Lowestoft on 26 October 1891 a son of George Thomas and Janet Moody Kent. He was baptised at Christchurch, Lowestoft, on 18 November 1891 and his family lived at 35 East Street. His family were still living at 35 East Street in 1901. By 1911 his family was living at 66 East Street, Lowestoft. 

Charles joined the Army, at Lowestoft, and, initially, served with the 6th (Cyclist) Battalion Suffolk Regiment, service number 2076.

A Rifleman with 2/17th Bn., William died on 7th of August 1916 at the age of 22. 

William was born at Lowestoft in 1893, a son of William and Eliza Turner. In 1901 his family lived at 23 Chapel Street, Lowestoft. By 1911 they were living at 3 Barrett's Yard, High Street, Lowestoft, and William was a fish worker in the herring fishing business. 

John Malcolm Hook
Died:

A Private with 9th Battalion, John died on 8th of August 1916 at the age of 32. 

John was born at Lowestoft on 7 September 1884, a son of George William and Emily Martha Hook. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 5 October 1884. In 1891 his family lived at 39 Albert Street. John attended Cunningham School and, from 23 March 1891, was a pupil at Saint Margaret’s School. John’s mother died in 1896. In 1901 his family still lived at 39 Albert Street and John was a general labourer. Later his father lived at 89 Rotterdam Road.

A Sergeant with the 7th Battalion, George died on 9th of August 1916 at the age of 26. 

George was born at Lowestoft on 16 August 1889, a son of William and Elizabeth Gower. He was baptised at Christchurch, Lowestoft, on 5 November 1890 and his family lived at 7 Factory Street. In 1891 they lived at 11 Compass Street, and this was still their home in 1901. By 1907 they were living at 7 Jacobs Street.

Frank Sustins
Died:

A Sapper with 208th Field Company, Frank died on 9th of August 1916 at the age of 39. 

Frank was born at Lowestoft on 4 March 1877, a son of William and Esther Sustins. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 2 September 1877. In 1881 his family lived at 40 Albert Street and by 1891 at 8 Albert Street and Frank worked as an errand boy. By 1901 Frank’s father had died and his family lived at 4 Edinburgh Road and Frank worked as a bricklayer. Later his mother lived at 39 Melbourn Road, 67 Crown Street, and then 7 Avondale Road, Lowestoft.

Died:

A Private with the 7th Battalion, George died on 9th of August 1916 at the age of 23. 

George was born in 1893, a son of George and Eliza Porter. He was baptised at Saint Mary's Church, Blundeston, on 4 June 1893 and his family lived at Flixton. In 1901 his family lived at Wigg's Cottages, Flixton. In 1911 George was still living with his family at Flixton and he was employed as a domestic gardener. Later his family lived at 53 Kimberley Road, Lowestoft.

Ernest James Martin
Died:

A Private with the 7th Battalion, Ernest died on 9th of August 1916 at the age of 30. 

Ernest was born at Lowestoft on 30 November 1885, a son of Benjamin and Ellen Martin. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 5 September 1886. In 1891 his family lived at 217 Clapham Road, but the Census shows that Ernest was a patient at Lowestoft Hospital when the census was taken. From 29 June 1896 Ernest attended Saint Margaret's Boys School. By 1901 the family were living at 200 Clapham Road, and this was still the family home in 1911.

A Second Lieutenant with the 1st Battalion, Frank died on 11th of August 1916 at the age of 34. 

Frank was born at Ilford, Essex, in 1882, a son of Frank Richard and Zillah Annie Wheatley. In 1891 his family lived at 151 High Street, Lowestoft. Frank was educated at Framlingham College. By 1901 Frank was a draper’s apprentice living, and working, at 35 Lower Brook Street, Ipswich. 

Walter Cook
Died:

A Private with the 7th Battalion, Walter died on 12th of August 1916 at the age of 23. 

Walter was born at Lowestoft in 1893, a son of John and Harriet Frances Cook. In 1901 Walter's family lived at Waterford Villa, Alexandra Road. His father died in 1901/2 and by 1906 Walter's family were living at 83 Rotterdam Road. In 1911 Walter was a grocer's assistant. In 1916 his mother lived at 5 Avondale Road. Later she lived at 79 Norwich Road, Lowestoft.

John James Kerridge
Died:

A Private with 7th Bn. John died on 12th of August 1916 at the age of 21. 

John was born at Cransford, Framlingham, Suffolk, in 1895, a son of Joseph William and Catherine Rebecca Kerridge. He was baptised at Saint Peter's Church, Cransford, on 20 October 1895. By 1901 his family were living at 83 Cambridge Road, Lowestoft, and by 1911 at 60 Saint Margaret's Road, and John, like his father, was a bootmaker. Later his parents lived at 15 Ipswich Road, Lowestoft. Note some civil records refer to John by his middle name, James.

A Private with the 2nd Battalion, Thomas died on 16th of August 1916 at the age of 37.

Thomas was born at Lowestoft on 22 November 1878, a son of James and Susan Robinson. In 1881 his family lived at 6 Alice Cottages, High Street, Lowestoft. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 2 October 1881. By 1901 his family were living at 1 Melbourne Road. In 1901 they lived at 43 The Hemplands, and Thomas worked as a furniture porter. By 1911 the family were living at 1 Melbourne Road, again, and Thomas was a fruiterer working on his own account.

A Private with the 2nd Battalion, Albert died on 16th of August 1916 at the age of 26. 

Albert was born at Oulton in 1890, a son of William John and Isabella Scarle. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Carlton Colville, on 14 September 1890. In 1891 his family lived near Saint Mark’s Church, Oulton Broad, and by 1901 at Main Road, Carlton Colville. By 1911 they were living at Bridge Road, Oulton Broad, and Albert was an apprentice carpenter. Late his parents’ address was Foxboro House, Bridge Road, Oulton Broad.

Died:

A Private with the 2nd Battalion, George died on 16th of August 1916 at the age of 37. 

George’s first names were Philip George, but in all of his military service he used George as his first name. He was born at Lowestoft on 1 June 1879, a son of William George and Louisa Neeve. In 1881 his family lived at 14 Dove Street. George was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 1 August 1886.

A Private with the 1/4th Battalion, Harry died on 18th of August 1916 at the age of 22. 

Harry was born at Lowestoft in 1894, a son of Frederick and Ellen Selina Smith. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Kirkley, on 3 May 1895. In 1901 his family lived at Horn Hill. By 1911 Harry’s mother had died and his family lived at 2 Florence Terrace, Saint John's Road, and Harry was a general labourer. 

Richard Stanley Spoor
Died:

A Private with the 1/4th Battalion, Richard died on 18th of August 1916 at the age of 22.

Richard was born at Lowestoft in 1894, a son of Moses and Alice Spoor. In 1901 hi family lived at 76 Queens Road, and by 1911 they were living at 87 Queens Road and Richard worked as a labourer for a steam drifter fishing company.

Richard enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft. He joined the Suffolk Regiment, service number 3849, and was posted to the 1/4th Battalion, in France, in 1916.

A Private with the 1/4th Battalion, Alfred died on 18th of August 1916 at the age of 21. 

Alfred was born at Kirkley on 16 August 1895, a son of Leander and Alice Maud Fuller. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Kirkley, on 10 February 1897. From 1 May 1899 Alfred was a pupil at Kirkley School. In 1901 his family lived at Kirkley Street. In 1911 the family’s address was 23 Kirkley Street and Alfred was a butcher’s boy.

A Private with the 1/4th Battalion, William died on 18th of August 1916 at the age of 36. 

William was born at Lowestoft in 1880, a son of William and Eliza Sharpe. In 1881 his family lived at 1 Whapload Road. By 1901 they were living at 9 Lighthouse Score, Whapload Road, and William was a boat builder’s labourer. Later his family lived at 42 Seago Street. In 1911 Wiliam lodged at 37 Trafalgar Street and he was a fishing industry storekeeper.

Died:

A Private with the 1/4th Battalion, Stanley died on 18th of August 1916 at the age of 19.

Stanley was born at Lowestoft in 1896, a son of William Edward and Emily Jane Coleman. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 17 January 1897 and his family lived at 15 Edinburgh Road. A Private with the 2nd Battalion, Alfred died on 18th of August 1916 at the age of 34. 

Alfred was born at Kessingland in 1883, a son John and Harriet Adams. In 1891 his family lived at a ‘cottage by Moss Road’ (sic), Kessingland. By 1901 they were living at Barn Road, Kessingland, and Alfred was a yardman on a farm. In 1911 they were still living at Barn Road, Kessingland, and Alfred was a farm labourer. 

Alfred enlisted in the Army at Bury St. Edmunds. He served with the Suffolk Regiment, service number 26788. William went to France in 1916 to join the 2nd Battalion.

A Private with 7th Bn. Edmund died on 19th of August 1916 at the age of 20.

Edmund was born at Brightlingsea, Essex, in 1896, a son of Edmund and Edith Oliver. he was baptised at All Saints' Church, Brightlingsea, on 19 September 1896. In 1901 his family lived at 36 Upper Park Road, Brightlingsea. By 1911 they were living at 6 Gilpin Terrace, Rock Estate, Oulton Broad, and Edmund was a boat builder's apprentice. Later his family lived at 1 Broad View, 30 Bridge Road, Oulton Broad, Lowestoft.

A Deck Hand with H.M. Trawler Birch, Frank died on 23rd of August 1916 at the age of 23. 

Frank was born at Lowestoft on 18 August 1890, a son of Thomas Bowler and Annie Wright. In 1891 his family lived at 113 Bevan Street. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Kirkley, on 25 May 1892. By 1911 his mother had died and his father lived at 57 Essex Road. 

In 1911 Frank was a deck hand on the trawler may, LT 573, at Padstow.

A Deck Hand with H.M. Drifter Ocean Plough, George died on 27th of August 1916 at the age of 35.

George was born at Kessingland on 19 November 1880, a son of George and Mary Ann Studd. He was baptised at Saint Edmund’s Church, Kessingland, on 27 February 1881 and his family lived at The Street, Kessingland. By 1911 their home was at 4 Providence Place, London Road, Kessingland.

A Private with 1/16th Bn., Kenneth died on 29th of August 1916 at the age of 19.

Kenneth was born at Lowestoft in 1897, a son of William and Margaret Annie Isabel Small. He was baptised at Saint John's Church, Lowestoft, on 26 December 1897 and his family lived at Regent Road, Lowestoft. By 1901 his family were living at 32 Grosvenor Road, Kirkley. In 1911 their home was at 2 and 3 Marine Parade, Lowestoft, and Kenneth was a student. At some point his family moved to 34 Cantley Gardens, Clapham Common.

A Sergeant with the 1/4th Battalion, Thomas died on 30 August 1916, at the age of 33.Thomas was born at Lowestoft in 1883, a son of William and Ann Chenery.
The 1891 Census shows him with his grandparents, Henry and Elizabeth Upson, at 251 Raglan Street, Lowestoft. In 1901 he was working as an oil carter and lodging with his uncle and aunt, William and Alice Upson, at 7 Clemence Street.
In 1905 Thomas began working for the Great Eastern Railway at Lowestoft. He was a blacksmith’s striker and later became a bargeman. Thomas played football for the G.E.R. Reserves.

A Deck Hand with H.M. Drifter Tuberose, Francis died on 31st of August 1916 at the age of 18. 

Francis, also known as Frank, was born at Lowestoft on 19 June 1897, a son of Arthur Albert and Clara Hunt. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 18 August 1897, and his family lived at 34 Haward Street, Lowestoft. In 1901 his family lived at 1 Florence Place, Saint John’s Road, Lowestoft. By 1911 they were living at Oulton Road, and by 1915 at 3 Oulton Street, Lowestoft.

A Private with 164th Company, Louis died on 1st of August 1917 at the age of 38. 

Louis was born at Lowestoft in 1879, a son of Thomas and Mary Maynard. In 1881 his family lived at 4 Nelson Street and by 1891 at West Bevan Street. In the family lived at 67 Norwich Road and Louis was a footman. Later his family lived at 57 Lorne Park Road. 

In 1911 Louis was working as a domestic coachman for Annie Hammond and lived at 17 Westgate, Bury St. Edmunds.

Frederick was born at Chelsfield, Kent, on 14 March 1894, a son of Frederick Arthur and Florence Ellen Brown of 6 Wellington Road, Pakefield, Lowestoft. Frederick was educated at Farnborough and later at Morton Road School. 

Frederick married Hilda Boyce at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 2 November 1915. At that time he was working as a plumber at Blackheath, Kent.

A Private with the 7th Battalion, Jasper died on 9th of August 1917 at the age of 29. 

Jasper was born at Kessingland on 6 November 1887, a son of Benjamin and Caroline Jane Utting. In 1891 his family lived at Beach Road, Kessingland. On 21 July 1895 Jasper was baptised at Saint Edmund’s Church, Kessingland. In 1901 his family lived at The Beach, Kessingland. In 1911 they lived at Green Lane, Kessingland, and later at Hill Cottage, Kessingland Beach.

In 1911 Jasper worked on the trawler Golden Rule.

A Lance Corporal with the 10th Battalion, Conrad died on 11th of August 1917 at the age of 20. 

Conrad was born at Kessingland in 1897, a son of John and Emma Catchpole. He was baptised at Saint Edmund’s Church, Kessingland, on 16 May 1897 and his family lived at Zulu Cottages, Kessingland. By 1911 they were living at 7 Broad View Villas, Oulton Broad.

Conrad volunteered and enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft. He joined the Essex Regiment, service number 14646, and was posted to the 10th Battalion. Conrad arrived in France with the 10th Battalion on 25 July 1915.

A Second Hand with H.M. Drifter Dewey, Robert died on 12th of August 1917 at the age of 50. 

Robert was born at Lowestoft on 27 September 1867, a son of Robert and Agnes Clara Hall. Robert was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 7 June 1868. In 1871 his family lived at Rant Score East. By 1881 they were living at 5 Raglan Street North. In 1891 Robert lived at 11 Barsham Square, East Street, and it seems that Robert was a ‘shoreman’.

Frederick was born at Lowestoft on 10 August 1888, a son of William Henry and Alice Mary Burwood. Frederick was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 13 October 1889. In 1891 his family lived at Bishops Buildings, Whapload Road, and by 1901 they were living at 1 Saint Margaret’s Court. Later his family lived at 9 Saint Margaret’s Plain.

Charles was born at Middleton, Suffolk, on 8 January 1891, a son of William and Mary Ann Church. In 1891 his family lived at The Moor, Middleton. By 1901 they were living ‘near Crossways’, Blundeston. By 1914 his family lived at Meadow Cottage, Oulton, and later his parents lived at Church Farm, Oulton Road Lowestoft. In 1911 Charles was a deck hand on the trawler Livonia at Paul, Cornwall.

A Deck Hand with H.M. Drifter Dewey, Edward died on 12th of August 1917 at the age of 32. 

Edeward was born at Lowestoft on 19 October 1880, a son of Mark and Elizabeth Simpson. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 5 December 1880. In 1881 his family lived at 59 Bevan Street and, by 1901, at 28 Beckham Road. In 1901 Edward worked as a fish labourer

On 19 December 1915 Edward married Lucy Emma Barnes. They lived at 20 Beckham Road and by 1916 they were living at 28 Bailsham Road, Lowestoft. Later Lucy lived at 3 Sudbury Cottages, Bevan Street.

A Sergeant with 7th Bn. Henry died on 13th of August 1917 at the age of 23. 

Henry was born at Lowestoft in 1894, a son of Henry George and Esther Emma Coleman. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church on 9 November 1894 and his family lived at 9 Jacob Street and this was still their home in 1901. By 1911 they had moved to 45 Haward Street, and Henry worked as a box maker. Later they lived at 58 Haward Street.

Thomas, also known as Tom, was born at Gisleham on 9 March 1898, a son of Thomas George Howell and Anna Jane Thacker. he was baptised at Rushmere on 1 may 1898, and his family lived at Gisleham. Later his family lived at Back, White Horse Corner, Carlton Colville.

Tom joined the Royal Naval Reserve on 26 July 1915 and served on the trawler Pilot Star. At some point he joined the 'Q Ship' H.M.S. Prize (this date is note shown on his service record).

A Skipper with H.M. Smack Nelson, Thomas died on 15th of August 1917 at the age of 41. 

Thomas, also known as Tom, was born at Lowestoft on 28 April 1876, a son of William and Mary Ann Crisp. In 1881 his family lived at 3 Rant Score East and by 1891 at 17 Seago Street. 

On 2 June 1895 Thomas married Harriet Elizabeth Alp at Saint Margaret’s Church. Thomas was a trawlerman and they both gave their address as 4 fir Lane. By 1901 they were living near Holly Farm, on Staithe Road, Burgh St. Peter, and Thomas was the mate on a fishing smack.

Henry, also known as Harry, was born at Thames Ditton on 23 December 1882, a son of Walter Peter and Mary Ann Taylor. He was baptised at Saint Nicholas' Church, Thames Ditton, on 28 January 1883. Note that his given names were George Henry. In 1891 his family lived at 7 South Bank, Long Ditton, Surrey. By 1901 they had moved to 183 Brompton Cottages, Long Ditton, and Henry worked as a groom - domestic.

Charles was born at Carlton Colville on 14 April 1874, a son of Johnson and Charlotte Manning. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Carlton Colville, on 31 May 1874. In 1881 his family lived at Beccles Road, Carlton Colville. By 1891 they were living at a cottage near Mutford Bridge, Beccles Road, Carlton Colville, and Charles was a fisherman.

Arthur was born at Burgh St. Peter, Norfolk, on 6 January 1879, a son of George and Sarah Soanes. He was baptised at Aldeby, Suffolk, on 20 July 1879. In 1881 his family lived at Beccles Road, Burgh St. Peter.

Maurice was born at Upper Norwood, London, on 24 April 1893, a son of Alfred James and Alice Ann Miller. In 1901 his family lived at 21 Ipswich Road, Lowestoft. Maurice was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 24 April 1908, and his family lived at Trafalgar House, Milton Road. Later his family lived at 17 Old Nelson Street, Lowestoft. In 1911 Maurice lived, and worked, at 204 Norwood Road, West Norwood, and he worked as a draper’s assistant.  

Robert William Abbs

A Private with the 8th Battalion, Robert died on 19th of August 1916 at the age of 27. 

Robert was born at East Runton, Norfolk, about 1889, a son of Robert Abbs. No other details of Robert’s early life are known. He cannot be conclusively identified on any civil record. Note: there is no actual evidence that his first names were anything other than Robert William, and this are confirmed by the marriage register entry at Saint Margaret’s Church.

In 1891 his family lived at Clyde Cottage, Beccles Road, Oulton, and this was still their home in 1901 when Robert worked as a grocer’s assistant. Later his parents lived at Victoria Road, Oulton.

Ernest was born at Lowestoft on 16 March 1889, a son George Henry and Eliza Royal. In 1891 his family lived at 42 The Hemplands and by 1901 they were living at 227 Raglan Street. Ernest attended Clapham Road School and, from 2 February 1896, was a pupil at Saint Margaret’s School. In 1911 Ernest lived with his sister, Harriet Francis, at 3 Orchard Terrace, and Ernest was a greengrocer’s assistant. By 1915 he was living at 1 Horn Hill Cottages, Lowestoft, with his sister Ethel Abbott.

Herbert was born at Lowestoft on 31 October 1888, a son of George William and Sarah Stevenson. In 1891 his family lived at Maida Cottage, Burton Street, and in 1901 at 4 Rotterdam Road. By 1911 the family had moved to 3 Primrose Road, Thorpe Hamlet, Norwich, and Herbert worked as a general labourer. Also living at 3 Primrose Road was Harriet Sexton who was the house keeper: Harriet was the mother of Dora Sexton.

Arthur was born at Lowestoft on 9 May 1889, a son of Samuel James and Elizabeth Charlotte Crowe. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 31 May 1889. In 1891 his family lived at 204 Clapham Road. Arthur was a pupil at Clapham Road School before, on 3 February 1896, becoming a pupil at Saint Margaret’s School. In 1896 his family lived at Raglan Street, and by 1901 they were living at 131 Wollaston Road. Later his parents moved to Poplar.

Walter was born at Keswick, Norwich on 31 July 1898, a son of Robert Herbert and Catherine Ann Littlewood. He was baptised at Saint Andrew's Church, Eaton, Norwich, on 31 August 1898 and his family lived at Keswick. In 1901 his family were living at Bell Road, Carlton Colville, and by 1911 they were living at Ingate Lodge Cottage, Cotmer Road, Oulton Broad.

George was born at Morar, Bengal, India, on 30 November 1882, a son of George and Jane Davis. George’s father was serving in India with the Royal Artillery. George was baptised at Morar, on 22 December 1882. By 1891 his family had settled at Lowestoft and lived at 3 Selby Street. This was still their home in 1901 when George worked as a timber carter. 

William Arthur Scowen

A Private with 6th Bn., William died on 22nd of August 1917 at the age of 38. 

William was born at Camberwell, London, in 1877, a son of Allan and Maria Scowen. In 1881 his family lived at 3 John Street, Camberwell. By 1891 William was working as a pawnbroker’s warehouse-boy and lodging with his employer, Walter Blackall, at 241 Walworth Road, Newington, London. 

In 1902 William married Beatrice Lily Gower. Beatrice, who was sometimes known as Lily, came from Beccles. 

Ernest Benjamin Godbold

A Gunner with 215th Siege Battery, Ernest died on 26th of August 1917 at the age of 37.

Ernest was born at Oulton, Lowestoft, in 1880, a son of Benjamin and Emma Godbold. He was baptised at Saint Michael’s Church, Oulton, on 28 March 1880. In 1881 his family lived at Mutford Bridge, Oulton Broad, and by 1891 at 42 Beccles Road, Oulton. In 1899 they lived at Saint Anne’s Terrace, Bridge Road, and by 1911 at 4 Rock Dene, Rock Estate, Oulton Broad. 

Joseph Ernest Calver

A Private with the 11th Battalion, Joseph died on 26th of August 1917 at the age of 29. 

Joseph was born at Kirkley on 19 August 1888, a son of Charles and Mary Calver. In 1891 his family lived at 8 Haward Street, and this was still their home in 1901. Joseph was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Kirkley, on 23 April 1903, and the family lived at Kimberley Road. By 1909 his family were living at 26 East Street and later his parents lived at 61 Crown Street.

Sidney was born at Ashby, near Somerleyton, in 1894, a son of John and Alice Cole. He was baptised at Saint Mary’s Church, Ashby, on 26 August 1894. In 1901 his family lived ‘near Hill Farm’, Ashby. By 1911 his father had died, and his mother had married Charles Howes, and the family lived at The Retreat, Somerleyton, and Sidney worked as a carpenter. Later his mother lived at 4 West Road, Westcliffe-on-Sea.

Edward Arthur Fennell

A Private with the 1/8th Battalion, Edward died on 27th of August 1917 at the age of 29. 

Edward was born at Lowestoft on 17 November 1887, a son of George and Harriett Fennell. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Kirkley, on 1 November 1891 and his family lived at 5 Carlton Road. Edward attended Carlton Road School and, on 20 June 1892, he became a pupil at Kirkley School. By 1901 they were living at Ivy Villa, Rotterdam Road. In 1911 his family lived at 45 Maidstone Road and Edward worked as a tin case maker in a fish preserve factory.

A Private with the 1/7th Battalion, Fredrick died on 28th of August 1917 at the age of 35. 

Frederick, sometimes known as Fred, was born at Thurlton, Norfolk, in 1879, a son of William and Matu Ann (Maria) Brabben. He was baptised at Thurlton on 26 May 1879 and his family lived at Thurlton. In 1891 his family lived at Reedham Road, Loddon. Later his parents lived at Thorpe, Haddiscoe, Norfolk.

In 1911 Frederick lived at 5 Hall Lane, Hardley, Loddon, and he worked as a horse man.

A Private with the 1/6th Battalion, Frederick died on 28th of August 1917 at the age of 19. 

Frederick was born at Pakefield on 11 May 1898, a son of George and Annie Maria Clarke. In 1901 his family lived at Cole’s Farm, Carlton Colville. Frederick attended Cunningham School from 9 February 1903 and his family lived at Kessingland Road. By 1911 they were living at 14 Coronation Terrace, Fir Lane.

A Mate with H.M. Drifter True Reward, George died on 30th of August 1917 at the age of 51. 

George was born at Barnby in 1865, a son of John and Eliza Bryant. In 1871 his family lived at Beccles Road, Barnby. In 1881 he was the cook on the trawler ‘James William’ of Lowestoft.  

In the later 1880s George worked as a trimmer for the P and O Line and he worked on the liner Ocean Queen before, in 1889, joining the liner Servia.

A Skipper with H.M. Drifter Oceans Gift II, Clement died on 30th of August 1917 at the age of 29. 

Clement was born at Carlton Colville on 7 February 1888, a son of William and Annie Minister. In 1891 his family lived at Bell Corner, Carlton Colville, and by 1901 they were living at Primrose Cottage, Chapel Road, Carlton Colville. Later his parents lived at Pond Farm, Mutford.

An Engineman with H.M.S. Vigorous, John died on 1st of August 1918 aged 30.

John was born at Pakefield on 7 September 1888, a son of George and Harriet M. A. Knights: note school admissions give his birth date as 1 July. In 1891 his family lived at 6 Pakefield Street and in 1901 at 2 Pakefield Street. John was a pupil at Cunningham School. On 17 August 1913 John married Louisa Cropley at Saint Margaret’s Church. John was a fisherman living at 9 Raglan Cottages and Louisa lived at 29 Kent Road. In 1915 they lived at 33 Kent Road, and in 1918 at Epsom Terrace, Kirkley Run.

William was born at Pakefield in 1897, a son of William and Annie Bessie Walker. In 1901 his family lived at Beach Street, Pakefield, and by 1911 at 35 Saint George’s Road, and William was a telegraph messenger. 

WILLIAM JOHN COOPER

A Sergeant with the 11th Battalion. William died on 7th of August 1918 at the age of 33. 

William was born at Lowestoft on 21 November 1884, a son of William and Mary Cooper. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 9 March 1890, and his family lived at 253 Raglan Street. In 1891 they were still living at 253 Raglan Street. By 1901 they were living at The Cottage, Waveney Drive, Kirkley, and William worked as an errand boy at the port. In 1911 they lived at Colville House, Carlton Colville, and later at Birds Farm, Birds Lane, Lowestoft.

An Acting Corporal with the 1/4th Battalion, Robert died on 8th of August 1918 aged 23. 

Robert was born at Lowestoft on 10 February 1895, a son of John and Amy Maria Knights. In 1901 his family lived at 17 Reeve Street. From 3 October 1904 Robert was a pupil at Saint Margaret’s School. In 1911 his family lived at 19 Oxford Road when Robert was a grocer’s errand boy.

A Private with the 10th Battalion, Ernest died on 8th of August 1918 aged 22. 

Ernest was born at Lowestoft in May 1896, a son of Peter and Annie Cooper. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 14 October 1896. Throughout Ernest’s life his family lived at 10 Cathcart Street. From 1 February 1904 Ernest attended Saint Margaret’s School. In 1911 Ernest was a confectioner’s errand boy.

Henry James Chapman

A Second Lieutenant attached to the 7th Battalion The Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regiment), Henry died on 8th of August 1918 at the age of 32. 

Henry was born at Ely in 1886, a son of Henry and Sarah Chapman. In 1891 his family lived at 36 Bamford Place, Barking, Essex. By 1901 they were living at Midloe, Waterbeach, Cambridgeshire, and Henry was a music seller’s assistant. 

In 1911 Henry lodged at 16 Waldegrave Road, Hornsey, and he was an assistant schoolmaster for London County Council. Later Henry was a teacher at Barming School, Maidstone, Kent. 

Frank  Cullingford

A Lance Corporal with the 1/1st Battalion, Frank died on 8th of August 1918 at the age of 23. 

Frank was born at Lowestoft on 2 January 1895, a son of Charles and Jane Cullingford. On 7 June 1898, Frank became a pupil at Kirkley School, and his family lived at 173 London Road, and this was still their home in 1901. By 1911 they were living at Fernleigh, Carlton Road, and Frank was a shop assistant at a grocer’s. Later, after his father’s death, Frank’s mother lived at 13 Orchard Street, Dereham Road, Norwich.    

Thomas Bruce Stollery
Died:

A Petty Officer with S.S. Celtic Prince, Thomas died on 8th of August 1918 aged 25.

Thomas was born at Kirkley on 15 December 1892, a son of Thomas and Maggie Stollery. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Kirkley, on 24 October 1894. On 1 June 1897 Thomas joined Kirkley School and his family lived at Lorne Cottages. On 13 June 1898 he joined Cunningham School, and his family lived at Pakefield and in 1899 he returned to Kirkley School, and his family lived at Clement Square. In 1901 his family lived at Westleton, Suffolk.

A Private with 9th Bn., Samuel died on 8th of August 1918 at the age of 39. 

Samuel was born at Lowestoft in 1879, a son of George Herbert and Emily Elizabeth Lambert. He was baptised at Saint John's Church, Lowestoft, on 28 September 1879 and his family lived at Raglan Street. Note on some records his names are given as William Samuel. A Private with 19th Battalion (Canadian Highlanders) Canadian Infantry. Walter died on 10th of August 1918 at the age of 29. 

Walter was born at Lowestoft on 5 September 1889, a son of Walter George and Alice Gowen. In 1891 his family lived at 89 Roman Road, Lowestoft. By 1901 Walter's father had died and his mother had married Thomas Walsh: the family lived at 15 Haward Street. Later his mother lived at 67 Raglan Street, Lowestoft, before moving to 144 Chichester Road, South Shields.

A Driver with 1 Company, 32nd Divisional Train, Robert died on 11th of August 1918 at the age of 40. 

Robert was born at Kirkley in 1878, a son of Alfred and Emma Grimble. He was baptised at Saint Peter's Church, Kirkley, on 28 April 1878. By 1881 his father had died and his family lived at 1 Waterworks Lane, Kirkley.  

On 15 September 1900 Robert married Esther Sarah Smith at Beccles Parish Church. They lived at 5 Waterworks Lane before moving to 2 Flora Terrace, Flora Road, off Carlton Road, Pakefield.

A Stoker 1st Class with H.M.S. Scott, Alfred died on 15th of August 1918 at the age of 18. 

Alfred was born at Fritton on 13 October 1899, a son of Alfred William and Emma Kett Daniels. He was baptised at Fritton on 26 November 1899, and his family lived at Fritton. In 1901 his family lived at 45 England Lane, Gorleston, and by 1911 they were living at 15 Lothing Street, Lowestoft.  

In 1917 Alfred married Dorothy Ann Boyce: this was registered in the Mutford district. By 1918 Dorothy was living at 2 Run Cottages, Flixton, Lowestoft.

A Private with the 10th Battalion, Edward died on 19th of August 1918 at the age of 18. 

Edward was born at Lowestoft on 27 August 1899, a son of John and Edith Anne Woolston. He was baptised at Saint John’s Church on 10 November 1899 and his family lived at 36 Stevens Street and this was Edward’s home throughout his life. 

Edward enlisted in the Army at Ipswich. He joined the Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire Regiment), service number 103380. He was posted to France to join the 10th Battalion.

A Private with 4th Bn., Walter died on 21st of August 1918 at the age of 18. 

Walter was born at Gorleston in 1899, a son of Harry and Sophia Ellen Friston. In 1901 his family lived at 12 Nile Road, Gorleston. By 1911 they were living at 6 Bells Marsh Road, Gorleston. Later they lived at 566 London Road, Lowestoft.

Walter enlisted in the Army at Ipswich. Initially he joined the 53rd Battalion Training Reserve, number TR/LON/136130. He was then transferred to the Royal Fusiliers and he served with the 4th Battalion in France from 14 July 1918.

A Private with 7th Bn. Walter died on 22nd of August 1918 at the age of 34. 

Walter was born at Leiston, Suffolk, in 1884, a son of James and Hannah Wigg. In 1891 his family lived at Snape Road and in 1901 their address was 1 Snape Road, Leiston, and Walter was a boiler maker's labourer. In 1911 his family were living at 32 Paradise Place, Leiston, and Walter was a bricklayer's labourer.

A Private with 1st Royal Marine Battalion, Royal Naval Division, Charles died on 25th of August 1918, at the age of 20 years. 

Charles was born at Lound on 29 March 1897, a son of George and Louisa Cracknell. He was baptised at Saint Bartholomew's Church, Corton, on 2 May 1897. In 1901 his family lived at 12 Back Lane, Lound, and, by 1911, at Fern House, Back Lane, Lound, and Charles was a farm labourer. Later his parents lived at The Corner, Lound, Lowestoft.

James Henry Gouldby

A Second Lieutenant with 5th Battalion (Territorial) attached 7th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, James died on 25th of August 1918 at the age of 24. 

James was born at Lowestoft in 1891, a son of William and Helena Clara Gouldby. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 21 April 1895 and his family lived at 239 Raglan Street. In 1901 they lived at 67 Raglan Street. By 1911 they were living at 133 Clapham Road and James was an assistant in his father's business as a Hay and Corn Merchant. 

James served with the 1/1st Suffolk Yeomanry.

A Major with the Royal Army Medical Corps, Herbert died on 10th of August 1919 at the age of 59. 

Herbert was born at Calcutta, India, on 16 March 1860, a son of Norman and Emily Ann Chevers. Herbert's father was an officer with the Indian Medical Service and would later become Deputy Surgeon General. Herbert was baptised at Saint Paul's Cathedral, Calcutta, on 20 April 1860. In 1871 Herbert, and his siblings, were living at the home of his cousin, Katherine Bates, at Montpellier, Cheltenham.

A Permanent Way Inspector with Iraq Railways, John died on 7th of August 1920 at the age of 36. 

John was born at Lowestoft on 31 June 1884, a son of John Robert Samuel and Alice Bagge. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 7 September 1884. In 1891 his family lived at 21 Jacob’s Street. By 1901 they were living at 75 Oxford Road and John was a printer journeyman. At some point John served with the 2nd Volunteer Battalion Norfolk Regiment.

Harold was born at Lowestoft in 1908, a son of George Edgar Rowing and Minnie Lilian Rowing Parker. In 1911 his family lived at 19 May Road and by 1921 their home was at Saint Marguerite, Saint Margaret’s Road.

Roy was born at Pakefield on 17 February 1918, a son of William H. G. and Lily Selina Boon. By 1921 his family was living at 14 Wellington Road, Pakefield. This was still their home in 1939 and, at that time, Roy worked as an aluminium moulder and fixer.

A Seaman with H.M. Trawler Brock. Edward died on 19th of August 1940 at the age of 29. 

Edward was born at Lowestoft on 4 April 1910, a son of Joseph and Florence Gravells. In 1911 his family lived at 3 Turner's Cottages, Saint John's Road, Lowestoft. By 1921 they were living at 13 Clemence Street, Lowestoft, and this was still their home in 1939 at which time Edward was working as a fisherman.

A Seaman with H.M. Trawler Brock. Arthur died on 19th of August 1940 at the age of 29. 

Arthur was born at Lowestoft on 16 July 1911, a son of Arthur Reginald and Ada Annie Hall. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 3 August 1911 and his family lived at 22 Oxford Road. In 1921 his family lived at 90 Cambridge Road, Lowestoft, and this was still their home in 1939.

A Civilian, Charles died on 21st of August 1940 aged 46. 

Charles was born at Lowestoft on 20 August 1894, a son of Charles and Caroline Harston. By 1901 Charles’ father had died and his family lived at 14 Clemence Street. 

On 2 August 1923 Charles married Elsie Gertrude Stammers at Saint Margaret’s Church. Charles was a shipwright and both Charles and Elise lived at 85 Oxford Road. By 1939 they lived at 135 Kimberley Road and Charles was a shipbuilder.

Ernest was born at Lowestoft on 26 November 1871, a son of William and Martha Bultitude. In 1881 his family lived at 51 Tonning Street, and this was still their home in 1891. As a young man Ernest began working as a fisherman and in 1897 he was awarded his certificate of competency as a skipper.

A Civilian, Alan died on 21st of August 1940 at the age of 19. 

Alan was born at Pakefield on 27 July 1921, a son of Walter Allen and Annie Gertrude Gosling. He was baptised at All Saints’ Church, Pakefield, on 11 September 1921, and his family lived at 20 Wellington Road. By 1939 his family were living at The Jolly Sailors, Pakefield Street, where his father was the licensee, and Alan was an apprentice engineering fitter.

Geoffrey was born at Lowestoft on 4 January 1910, a son of Edward Thomas and Harriet Murrills. In 1911 his family lived at 215-217 London Road. On 5 January 1914 Geoffrey became a pupil at Lovewell School. By 1921 his family were living at 21 Salisbury Road and in 1939 Geoffrey, and his widowed mother lived at 566 London Road and Geoffrey worked as a cost clerk at the cable works. Later his mother lived at 9 Higher Drive. Geoffrey was also a fireman with the Auxiliary Fire Service.

A Civilian, John died on 21st of August 1940 aged 42. 

John was born at Lowestoft on 3 March 1898, a son of John and Eliza Hale. In 1901 his family lived at 65 Stevens Street, and this was still their home in 1921. John became a pupil at Saint John’s School on 8 January 1906. By 1921 John was working as a shipwright and he worked for William Derry boat-builders, at Commercial Road. 

In 1921 John married Dora Lydia Ruthen, their marriage was registered in the Mutford district. By 1939 they were living at 64 Stevens Street and John was a shipwright.

A Leading Seaman with H.M.S. Penzance, Leslie died on 24th of August 1940 at the age of 30. 

Leslie was born at Lowestoft on 16 December 1911, a son of William and Elizabeth Collins. In 1921 his family lived at 54 Clemence Street. 

On 31 October 1936 Leslie married Dorothy Bethune Lake at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft. Leslie was an Able Seaman on H.M.S. Lupin and Dorothy a shop assistant living at 72 Rotterdam Road. Dorothy died in 1937.

In 1938 Leslie married Eva Doris Sharp and in 1939 Eva lived at 48 Oxford Road.

A Civilian, George died on 27th of August 1940 aged 44. 

George was born at Lowestoft on 6 November 1895, a son of George and Louisa Breach. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 22 December 1895, and his family lived at 22 Clapham Road. In 1901 his family lived at Hastings House, Whapload Road, and this was still their home in 1911. By 1917 the family home was at Hollinghurst, High Street.

Ernest was born at Lowestoft on 27 April 1913, a son of Samuel and Rosetta Butcher. In 1921 his family lived at 24 Union Road, and this was still their home in 1939 when Ernest worked as a wooden box and case maker. 

In 1940 Ernest married Lillie Ellen Elizabeth Cowles, this was registered in the Lothingland district. Lillie remarried in 1946.

A Lance Bombardier with 75 (Shropshire Yeomanry) Medium Regiment, John died on 9th of August 1941 at the age of 24. 

John was born in 1917, a son of Samuel George and Fanny Briggs. In 1921 his family lived at The Street, Hulver, and by 1939 they were living near the Post Office at Hulver, Beccles.

John married Beryl Olive Shipley in 1940. She lived at 'Penwood', Rushmere Road, Carlton Colville. Beryl remarried in 1944.

John died, at Bruith, Breconshire, as the result of an accident.

An Aircraft Apprentice with No 1 School of Technical Training, William died on 10th of August 1941 at the age of 18. 

William was born at Lowestoft on 16 January 1923, a son of William Henry and Georgina Honor Powell. In 1939 his family lived at 32 Seago Street, and William worked as an assistant to a coach body maker. He was also an A.R.P. messenger at his works.

A Civilian, Jessie died on 10th of August 1941 at the age of 48. 

Jessie was born at Lowestoft on 13 March 1893, a daughter of George and Susan Ann Smith. She was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 7 May 1893 and her family lived at 35 Edinburgh Road. 

Jessie married Sydney Road at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 18 December 1917. At that time he was a soldier on active service, and Jessie lived at 16 Queens Road.

A Civilian, Sydney died on 10th of August 1941 at the age of 49. 

Sydney was born at Lowestoft on 12 March 1892, a son of James and Martha Ashley Roach. Sydney's family lived at 71 Wollaston Road. In 1911 Sydney was employed as a domestic groom.

Sydney was working as a groom, for Lilian Boswell at Tudor Lodge, Lowestoft, when he volunteered to join the Army. He attested and joined the Suffolk Regiment, at Lowestoft, on 9 September 1914, number 12648. He was posted to the 9th Battalion and served in France from 30 August 1915.

A Civilian, Frank died on 10th of August 1941 at the age of 19. 

Frank was born at Lowestoft in 1922, a son of Sydney Alfred and Jessie May Roach. By 1939 his family were living at 71 Wollaston Road.

Frank served with the Home Guard.

On the night of 9-10 August 1941 an air raid took place at Lowestoft. Frank, his parents, Sydney and Jessie, William and Georgina Powell, and their son William, took shelter in a double Anderson shelter at the end of the garden of 71 Wollaston Road. A high explosive bomb scored a direct hit on the shelter killing everyone inside.

Georgina was born at Lowestoft, on 2 December 1890, a daughter of George William and Georgina Carr Nobbs. She was baptised at Christchurch, Lowestoft, on 7 January 1891, and her family lived at Searle's Buildings, The Beach, Lowestoft. By 1901 her family were living at 33 Ravenscroft Road, West Ham, but by 1911 they had returned to Lowestoft at lived at 32 Seago Street.

A Civilian, William died on 10th of August 1941 at the age of 52. 

William was born at Clapham, London, on 27 March 1889. William married Georgina Honor Nobbs, at Lowestoft, in 1915, 

In 1921 William and Georgina were living at 32 Seago Street, and William had his own business as a tennis racket manufacturer, with premises at 155 London Road, Lowestoft.

An Able Seaman with M.V. Stork (London), Frank died on 23rd of August 1941 aged 35. 

Frank was born at Margate on 21 June 1906, a son of Frederick Whiting and Charlotte Timms. In 1914 his family lived at 2 Addington Street, Margate, and by 1919 their home was at 10 Edinburgh Road, Lowestoft. In 1939 Frank’s father lived at 59 Maidstone Road.

A Sergeant with 500 Squadron, Alan died on 30th of August 1941 at the age of 20. 

Alan was born at Lowestoft on 24 September 1920, a son of Albert John and Valerie Rhoda Peek. He was baptised at Saint Peter's Church, Kirkley, on 15 October 1920. His family lived at Wycombe Terrace, Saint Georges Road, Lowestoft, for all of Alan's life. 

Alan served with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve and was a Wireless Operator/Air Gunner. He was based at Bircham Newton with 500 Squadron.

A Sergeant with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, Archie died on 3rd of August 1942 aged 22. 

Archie was born at Lowestoft on 1 May 1920, a son of Henry Charles and Laura Jane Sparham. In 1921 his family lived at 14 Suffolk Road and by 1939 they were living at 31 Windsor Road and Archie was a timber merchant’s clerk. Probate record give Archie’s address as Ferndale, Walmer Road.  

Archie joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve after April 1940. Archie was a Wireless Operator / Air Gunner. In August 1942 he was serving with 58 Squadron.

A Chaplain with the Indian Ecclesiastical Establishment, William died on 18th of August 1942 at the age of 37. 

William was born at Knaresborough, Yorkshire, on 13 May 1905, a son of William and Jessie Rebecca Driffield. In 1911 his family were living at The Avenue, Knaresborough. In the 1920s his parents lived at 3 Coppice Drive, Ripon, and by 1939 they were living at Goats Hill, Sheringham. Subsequently they moved to Lowestoft and lived at 2 The Avenue.

A Flight Sergeant with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, Alfred died on 19th August 1942 aged 21. 

Alfred was born at Kessingland on 2 September 1920, a son of Alfred and Ellen Mary Utting. He was baptised at Saint Edmund’s Church, Kessingland, on 21 August 1922. In 1921 his family lived at 8 The Ridge, and this was still their home in 1939.

In 1939 Alfred was a student at Saint Luke’s Teacher Training College, Heavitree Road, Exeter. In 1942 Alfred married Marjorie E. Pennick, this was registered in the Romford district. Marjorie lived at Plaistow, Essex.

A Sergeant with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, Peter died on 20th of August 1942 aged 21. 

Peter was born at Lowestoft on 15 June 1921, a son of Samuel Walter and Gertrude Louisa Allen. In 1921 they lived at 121 London Road South, Lowestoft. By 1939 his parents were living at 12 Enstone Road, Lowestoft.  

In 1939 Peter was living at 55 Cozens Road, Norwich, and he worked as a Post Office soring clerk and telegraphist.

A Civilian, Elsie died on 26th of August 1942 aged 42. 

Elsie was born at Lowestoft on 26 February 1900, a daughter of Julian Christopher and Annie Eliza Juler. She was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 9 May 1902 and her family lived at 87 Arnold Street. By 1911 they were living at 33 Tennyson Road and this was still their home in 1921 when Elsie was a shop assistant on the furniture department at Tuttle and Sons Limited, drapers and furnishers, London Road North.

A Private with 6th Bn. Harold died on 1st of August 1943 at the age of 27.

Harold was born at Lowestoft on 16 August 1914, a son of William Charles and Harriet Hume. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church on 3 September 1914 and his family lived at 81 May Road. 

In 1941 Harold married Norah May Catchpole. Their marriage was registered in the Stafford district. In the mid-1940s Norah lived at Walton, Stone, Staffordshire.  

Harold was working as a cocktail barman when he joined the Army.

A Lance Corporal with the 5th Battalion, Stanley died on 3rd of August 1943 aged 27. 

Stanley was born at Lowestoft on 23 July 1916, a son of Ernest Henry and Letitia Moyse. In 1921 his family lived at 8 Jacobs Street. By 1939 his family were living at 7 Waveney Crescent and Stanley was a general labourer. In early 1940 Stanley married Ellen Margaret Dorothea Dewell, this was registered in the Lothingland district. By 1943 Ellen was living at Council Chambers, Bridge Road, Oulton Broad.

A Private with the 1st Battalion, Arthur died on 3rd of August 1943 aged 34.

A Private with the Pioneer Corps, Frederick died on 4th of August 1943 at the age of 35. 

Frederick was born at Beccles on 9 June 1908, a son of Louis and Edith Mary Beard. In 1911 his family lived at The Suffolk Inn, Station Road, Beccles, where is father was the publican.

A Cadet with M.V. Harpagus (London), Denis died on 5th of August 1943 at the age of 20. 

Denis was born at Reading in 1922, a son of Henry and Eleanor Mary Cox. By 1939 Denis' parents were running the Post Office at Chediston, and later they lived in Lowestoft. 

Denis died, at Algiers, in an accident caused by the explosion of a nearby ship.

A Warrant Officer Class II (Company Sergeant Major) with the 5th Battalion. George died on 6th of August 1943 at the age of 42.

George was born at Lowestoft on 10 March 1903, a son of John and Beatrice Maltby. He was baptised at Saint Peter's Church, Kirkley, on 5 April 1903, and his family lived at 20 Lovewell Road, Lowestoft. By 1911 his family was living at 39 Park Road, Lowestoft, and by 1939 his parents lived at 15 Wollaston Road, Lowestoft.

Jermyn was born at Lowestoft in 1917. A son of Jermyn Thomas and Agnes Jane Greengrass. He was baptised at Christ Church, Lowestoft, on 27 May 1917, and his family lived at Old Nelson Street. In 1921 his family lived at 16 Royal Avenue, and by 1939 their address was 7 Battery Green Road.

A Lance Corporal with the 1st Battalion, George died on 12th of August 1943 aged 28. 

George was born in the Birmingham area in 1915, a son of Joseph and Florence Burrows. His father died in 1926 and in 1939 his mother lived at 33 Tiverton Road, Birmingham.  

George married Norma Roads in 1940, this was registered in the Medway district. Later Norma lived at Lowestoft, Suffolk.

A Sergeant with the Army Catering Corps, attached to the 4th Battalion Suffolk Regiment, George died on 14th of August 1943 at the age of 24. 

George was born at Gisleham on 1 May 1919, a son of Albert Alfred and Ethel Agnes Gooch. he was baptised at Saint John's Church, Lowestoft, on 23 May 1919 and his family lived at Church Farm Cottages, Gisleham. 

George's father died in 1930 and his mother remarried and in 1939 she lived at 153 The Avenue, Lowestoft.

George married Hilda Maud Rivett in 1940, this registered in the Bury St. Edmunds district.

A Lance Corporal with the 5th Battalion, Kenneth died on 17th of August 1943 aged 23. 

Kenneth was born at Leiston on 19 December 1919, a son of Leonard and Dorothy Grace Read. In 1921 his family lived at 11 Station Road, Carlton, Nottingham. By 1939 they were living at 17 Minden Road, Lowestoft, and Kenneth was a grocery provision salesman.

A Private with 4th Bn., Kenneth died on 19th of August 1943 at the age of 25. 

Kenneth was born at Leeds on 25 July 1918, a son of Ernest Frank and Christiana Sarah Durrant. He was baptised at Saint John's Church, Lowestoft, on 18 September 1918. At that time his family lived at 35 Wellclose Mount, Leeds. In 1939 his family lived at 137 Bells Road, Gorleston, and Kenneth worked as a baker's ovenman. Kenneth was a nephew of Miss Margaret Ellen Lamb of 59 London Road South, Lowestoft.

A Gunner with 435 Battery, 131 Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Edward died on 20th of August 1943 aged 28. 

Edward was born at Stowmarket on 13 May 1915 a son of Fredrick and Florence Scarles. In 1921 his family lived at 45 Upper Cliff Road, Gorleston. Later his parents lived 75 Beresford Road, Lowestoft, before moving to Salisbury, Wiltshire.

An Ordnance Artificer 2nd Class with H.M.S. Egret, Harry died on 27th of August 1943 aged 28. 

Harry was born at Lowestoft on 21 February 1915, a son of Harry James and Bessie Roll. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 1 April 1915 and his family lived at Hedley House, Beaconsfield Road. In 1921 his family lived at 267 London Road South, and this was Harry’s home for the rest of his life.

A Sergeant with the 2nd Battalion, George died on 3rd of August 1944 aged 24. 

George was born at Snettisham, Norfolk, in 1920, a son of George Thomas and Flora Robinson. In 1921 his family lived at Station Road, Snettisham, and this was still their home in 1939. In early 1944 George married Betty Lilian Pratt, this was registered in the Lothingland district. Betty’s family lived at 634 London Road.

A Private with the 7th Battalion, Edward died on 13th of August 1944 aged 19.

Edward was born at Lowestoft on 3 June 1925, a son of William and Gertrude Louisa Arnold. In 1939 his family lived at 1 Beach Stone Place, Pakefield, and Edward was till at school.

Edward served with the 7th Battalion Royal Norfolk Regiment. His battalion landed at Normandy on 27 June 1944.

Henry was born at Lowestoft on 25 April 1925, a son of Henry George William and Bessie Duffield. In 1939 his family lived at 48 Denmark Road and Henry was at school.

A Petty Officer Steward with H.M.S. Fratton., Victor died on 18th of August 1944 at the age of 24. 

Victor was born at Lowestoft on 30 January 1920, a son of Ernest Victor and Rose Lilian Snowling. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church on 22 February 1920 and his family lived at 51 Sussex Road. By 1939 they were living at 32 Kent Road, Lowestoft, and Victor worked as a commercial vehicle builder.

Died:

A Fireman and Trimmer with S.S. Wayfarer (Liverpool), Frederick died on 19th of August 1944 at the age of 28.

Frederick was born at Hull on 13 August 1916, a son of Ellerby and Mary Ann Tharratt (Note CWGC gives his parents as Mr and Mrs Joseph Tharrat: information here from Frederick' baptism record). He was baptised at Saint Paul's Church, Sculcoates, on 27 August 1916 and his family lived at 3 Peck's Terrace, Rodney Street. 

In 1940 Frederick married Ethel May Webb at Ipswich and she lived at 44 Shakespeare Road, Whitton, Ipswich.

Died:

A Blacksmith 3rd Class with H.M.S. Princess Beatrix, Percy died on 26th of August 1944 aged 47. 

Percy was born at Camborne, Cornwall, on 24 June 1897, a son of Isreal and Mary Pellew. In 1901 his family lived at Vynyan Street, Camborne, and in 1911 their address was 11 Vynyan Street, Camborne. 

In 1919 Percy married Edith Mary Brown, this was registered in the Mutford district. Their home was at 10 Yeovil Road.

Died:

A Sapper with 288 Field Company, Frederick died on 9th of August 1945 aged 30. 

Frederick was born at Pakefield on 19 September 1914, a son of John Edward and Emily Folkard Harper. In 1921 his family lived at 38 Sycamore Avenue, Oulton Broad. 

On 10 October 1934 Frederick married Mabel May Swatman at Saint Michael’s Church, Oulton. Frederick was a gas worker living at 54 Sycamore Avenue, and Mabel was a matron’s assistant living at Saint Osyth, Bridge Road, Oulton Broad. Their home was at Saint Leonard’s, 5 Highland Way, Oulton Broad. 

Died:

A Gunner with 387 Battery, 121 H.A.A. Regiment, Harold died on 13th of August 1946 at the age of 37. 

Harold was born at Canterbury on 16 February 1909, a son of William Richard and Ellen Alice Capper. In 1911 his family lived at 4 Military Road, Canterbury.

Harold married Violet Adelaide Hatcher at Saint Mary the Virgin Church, Orlestone, Kent, on 6 September 1930. In 1939 Harold and Violet lived at 2 Coronation Cottages, Worth, Kent, and Harold worked as a nurseryman (foreman).

Died:

An Aircraftman 2nd Class with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, Sydney died on 30th of August 1946 aged 19. 


Son of Sydney Bertram and Ethel Blanche Cooper of Lowestoft. In 1939 they lived at 31 Stanford Street. 


Sydney joined the air force in late 1945 served with 265 Maintenance Unit based at Grove, Berkshire.  

Died:

A Craftsman with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, Ernest died on 20th of August 1947 aged 24. 

Ernest was born at Eastbourne, Sussex, in 1923, a son of James William Aubrey and Emma Eastick (Ernest's father later remarried). By 1932 his family was living at Leeds and in 1939 their address was 7 Hawkswood Terrace, Leeds. Subsequently his parents lived at 32 Newson's Meadow, Lowestoft. 

Ernest's death was registered in the Petersfield district.
