A Leading Seaman with H.M. Submarine Odin, Walter died on 27th of June 1940 at the age of 29. 

Walter was born at Carlton Colville on 29 September 1910, a son of Walter George and Bertha Carrie Laws. He was baptised at Saint Peter's Church, Carlton Colville, on 30 October 1910 and his family lived at The Grove Cottage, Grove Farm, Carlton Colville. By 1921 his family were living at Camp Common, Hopton.

A Engineman with H.M. Drifter Eyrie. William died on 2nd of September 1914 at the age of 44. 

William was born at Leiston, Suffolk, in 1869, a son of George and Sophia Whiting. In 1871 his family lived at Coldfair Green, Leiston, and in 1881 at Snape Road, Leiston. By 1891 William was living at The Common, Friston, and working as a maltster's labourer. 

William John Slater
Died:

A Deck Hand with H.M. Drifter Eyrie. William died on 2nd of September 1914 at the age of 18. 

William was born at Blundeston in 1896, a son of Ambrose and Gertrude Slater. He was baptised at Saint Mary's Church, Blundeston, on 1 March 1896. In 1901 his family lived at The Street, Blundeston. By 1911 they were living at 129 Rotterdam Road and William worked as a trawler fisherman.

William joined the Royal Naval Reserve on 10 August 1914. He died when H. M. Drifter Eyrie struck a mine in the North Sea.

A Deck Hand with H.M. Drifter Eyrie. Robert died on 2nd of September 1914 at the age of 50. 

Robert was born at Ipswich in 1863, a son of Samuel. In 1871 he lived with his grandmother at 97 Tower Terrace, Ipswich.  

On 10 September 1885 Ernest married Charlotte Patience Mills at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft. Both Ernest and Charlotte were living at Lowestoft and Ernest worked as a fisherman. By 1901 they were living at 37 Alma Road, Lowestoft.

Died:

A Deck Hand with H.M. Drifter Eyrie. Frederick died on 2nd of September 1914 at the age of 25. 

Frederick was born at Lowestoft in 1889, a son of William and Margaret Jane Allen. He was baptised at All Saints' Church, Pakefield, on 17 February 1889, and his family lived at Kirkley. In 1891 his family lived at 82 Pakefield Street. Later his family lived at 22 Pakefield Street.

On 12 December 1909 Frederick married Sophia Howlett, at Broome, Norfolk. In 1911 they lived at 26 Pakefield Street, and later Sophia lived at 2 Beach Stone Place, Pakefield. 

Thomas Scarll
Died:

A Skipper with H.M. Drifter Eyrie. Thomas died on 2nd of September 1914 at the age of 48. 

Thomas was born at Lowestoft in 1865. No details of his parents have been found. In 1871 he was a pauper inmate at the Oulton 'House of Industry'. By 1880 Thomas was working at sea and in 1880-1881 he served on the sailing trawler Strive. 

On 29 October 1889 Thomas married Elizabeth Hale at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft. Thomas was a fisherman and they both lived at 70 London Road. By 1900 they were living at 35 Wollaston Road, and by 1914 at 62 Norwich Road, Lowestoft. 

Arthur Sharman
Died:

A Second Hand with H.M. Drifter Lindsell. Arthur died on 3rd of September 1914 at the age of 51. 

Arthur was born at Gisleham in 1863, a son of Shadrach William and Mary Ann Sharman. He was baptised at Holy Trinity Church, Gisleham, on 31 January 1864. In 1871 his family lived at Gisleham. 

By 1881 Arthur was a fisherman working on the trawler Blue Bell of Lowestoft. 

Arthur Baker
Died:

A Deck Hand with H.M. Drifter Lindsell. Arthur died on 3rd of September 1914 at the age of 22. 

Arthur was born at Carlton Colville on 16 June 1894, a son of George and Anne Maria Baker. Arthur was baptised at Saint Peter's Church, Carlton Colville, on 30 December 1894, and his family lived at Carlton Colville. In 1901 his family lived at 1 Bloodmoor Cottages, Gisleham. Arthur attended Gisleham School. In 1911 his family lived at Bloodmoor Lane, Gisleham, and Arthur was a farm labourer. 

Died:

A Deck Hand with H.M. Drifter Lindsell, Arnold died on 3rd of September 1914 at the age of 17. 

Arnold was born at Barnby in 1897, a son of George and Susan Bailey. In 1901 his family lived at Beccles Road, Barnby, and they were still living at Beccles Road in 1911 and Arnold worked as an errand boy. 

Arnold joined the Royal Naval Reserve on 10 August 1914 and served on the steam drifter Lindsell. When he enrolled he stated that his first name was Ernest and this is how he appears on his Royal Naval Reserve service record. 

Died:

An Engineman with H.M. Drifter Lindsell. Bertie died on 3rd of September 1914 at the age of 27.

Bertie was born at Carlton Colville in 1887, a son of Edward James and Amelia Sharman. In 1891 his family lived at Bell Corner, Calrton Colville, and in 1901 their address was Bell Road, Carlton Colville. By 1911 they were living at Peacock Terrace, Carlton Colville, and Bertie was a stoker on a steam drifter.

A Skipper with H.M. Drifter Lindsell. Arthur died on 3rd of September 1914 at the age of 30. 

Charles was born at Carlton Colville in 1885, a son of Israel and Clara Woodgate. He was baptised at Saint Peter's Church, Carlton Colville, on 28 June 1885. Note his given names were Arthur Charles. In 1891 his family lived at Burnt Hill, Beccles Road, Carlton Colville. By 1901 his family were living at Barsham and Charles worked as a blacksmith. 

Died:

A Leading Seaman with H.M.S. Pathfinder. Charles died on 5th of September 1914 at the age of 37.

Charles was born at North Leith, Edinburgh, on 6 November 1876, a son of Thomas Barclay Henry (R.N.) and Susan Dougall Henry. In 1881 his family lived at 8 Victoria Place, North Leith, and in 1891 at 18 Victoria Place.

On 21 February 1911 Charles married Caroline Elizabeth Liffen at Lowestoft. By 1914 they were living at Beaconsfield Road and later Caroline lived at 21 Trafalgar Street, Lowestoft. Caroline later remarried. 

Died:

A Lance Corporal with 1st Bn. Archdale died on 14th of September 1914 at the age of 29. 

Archdale was born at Henstead in 1885, a son of George and Charlotte Morse. He was baptised at Henstead on 8 February 1885. In 1891 his family lived at Henstead. By 1901 his father had died and his mother remarried and his family lived near the Bell Inn at Carlton Colville and Archdale worked as a general labourer. Later their address was 1 Bell Cottage, Carlton Colville.

Died:

A Sergeant with 2nd Bn. Michael died on 14th of September 1914 at the age of 32. 

Michael was born at Islington, London, a son of Mabel Emma Williams. By 1901 his mother and sister were living at No. 6 Row 99 Kings Street, Great Yarmouth, later they lived at Rose Cottage, Milton Road, Lowestoft, 48 Lorne Park Road, and then 80 Beaconsfield Road, Lowestoft.

Michael worked as a labourer. He served with the 7th (Militia) Battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps before joining the regular battalions of the Regiment, at Great Yarmouth, on 28 November 1900. 

Died:

A Driver with 114th Battery 25th Brigade. Thomas died on 20th of September 1914 at the age of 19. 

Thomas was born at Lowestoft in 1895, a son of Thomas Last Youngman and Sarah Youngman. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 11 August 1895, and his family lived at 46 Crown Street, Lowestoft, which was their home until at least 1911. Later they lived at 4 Parkholme Terrace, High Street, Lowestoft.

Thomas attended Church Road Board School. In 1911 Thomas worked as a draper's errand boy.

Died:

A Seaman, Thornton died on 22nd of September 1914 at the age of 37.

Thornton was born at Fersfield, Norfolk, in 1877, a son of Fergus and Lavinia Lanchester.

In his teens Thornton worked as an agricultural labourer at Kenninghall but by 1901 he was a fisherman. He married Gertrude Elizabeth Fairhead at Saint Margarets Church, Lowestoft, on 5 July 1903 and they lived at 15 Grove Road, Lowestoft.

Walter Samuel Bucknole
Died:

A Seaman with H.M.S. Cressy. Walter died on 22nd of September 1914 at the age of 21. 

Walter was born at Lowestoft on 4 March 1893, a son of Frank and Harriet Bucknole. In 1891 his family lived at 78 Norwich Road. By 1914 they were living at 43 Stanford Street and later lived at 44 Windsor Road, Lowestoft.

Walter joined the Royal Naval Reserve on 14 March 1912. 

In 1912 he worked on the trawler Nimrod, LT 589; Glory, LT 1027; and in 1913 the Twelve YH 562; and the Coronella LT 36. 

Died:

A Stoker 2nd Class with H.M.S. Aboukir. Leonard died on 22nd of September 1914 at the age of 20. 

Leonard was born at Lowestoft on 7 April 1894. Leonard was the adopted son Caroline Wright, a widow. In 1891 his family lived at 5 Burton Terrace, Whapload Road, and by 1911 they were living at 293 Whapload Road, and Leonard worked as a labourer at a mineral water manufacturer. 

Leonard was a net worker when he joined the Royal Navy, as  Stoker 2nd Class, on 4 June 1913. On 2 August 1914 he was drafted to H.M.S. Aboukir. 

Charles Henry Benstead
Died:

A Seaman with H.M.S. Cressy. Charles died on 22nd of September 1914 at the age of 19. 

Charles was born at Lowestoft on 1 October 1895, a son of James Henry and Sarah Benstead. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 27 October 1895 and his family lived at 34 Bevan Street, Lowestoft.

In 1912 Charles worked on the trawler Nimrod, LT 598, and in 1913 on the Children's Friend LT 174; Councillor, LT 267, and LT 1104. 

Charles joined the Royal Naval Reserve on 15 March 1912.  

John Samuel Button
Died:

A Seaman with H.M.S. Aboukir, John died on 22nd of September 1914 aged 44. 

John was born at Lowestoft on 31 October 1869, a son of Jonathan and Jane Hannah Button. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 3 December 1871. His family lived at 11 Compass Lane, Lowestoft. In 1881 John and his father were at 2 Lake Lothing Terrace.

Alonzo Joseph Corbin
Died:

A Seaman with H.M.S. Cressy. Alonzo died on 22nd of September 1914 at the age of 21. 

Alonzo was born at Lowestoft on 14 July 1893, a son of Joseph William and Charlotte Corbin. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's church on 22 January 1896 and his family lived at 20 Union Road. In 1901 his family lived at 68 Stanford Street, and by 1911 they were living at 29 Sandringham Road Lowestoft (Note his parents were often known as Joseph and Lottie).

William Oldman
Died:

A Seaman with H.M.S. Hogue, William died on 22nd of September 1914 at the age of 37. 

William was born at Somerleyton on 7 February 1877, a son of William James and Harriet Oldman. He was baptised at Saint Mary's Church, Somerleyton, on 11 March 1877. In 1881 his family lived at 22 Brickfields, Somerleyton. By 1901 they were living at 4 Wesleyan Chapel Lane, Lowestoft, and William was working as a cook on a smack. 

Died:

An Able Seaman with H.M.S. Cressy. Walter died on 22nd of September 1914 at the age of 34.

Walter was born at Sprowston, Norwich, on 20 August 1882, a son of William Robert and Minnie Henry. In 1891 his family lived at Farm Yard Cottage, Salhouse Road, Rackheath, and later at 48 Lingwood, Norwich.

Walter had been working as a labourer when he joined the Royal Navy, as a Boy 2nd Class, on 14 September 1892. He served until 6 March 1908 and the next day he joined the Royal Fleet Reserve, number RFR/CH/B/4971.

Frederick Thomas Rudd
Died:

A Seaman with H.M.S. Cressy, Frederick died on 22nd of September 1914 aged17. 

Frederick was born at Lowestoft on 14 January 1897, a son of Frederick James and Ellen (Nellie) Rudd. In 1901 his family lived at Wood's Loke and by 1915 their home was at 36 Rotterdam Road. Frederick attended Yarmouth Road School, Oulton Broad. 

In 1914 Frederick worked on the trawler Stowe LT 70.  

Frederick joined the Royal Naval Reserve on 9 February 1914. Frederick was called out for service at the start of the First World War and on 3 August 1914 joined H.M.S. Cressy. 

James Frederick Crisp
Died:

A Seaman with H.M.S. Aboukir. James died on 22nd of September 1914 at the age of 30. 

James was born at Lowestoft on 14 February 1884, a son of James Harris Crisp and Jemima Crisp. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 6 April 1884. In 1891 his family lived at 8 Clemence Street. By 1901 they were living at 4 Beckham Road and James was a deck hand on a smack. Later they lived at 28 Norwich Road, Lowestoft.

James enrolled in the Royal Naval Reserve on 1 April 1904.

In 1911 James was the Third Hand on the trawler Hesperus at Padstow.  

Thomas Armes
Died:

A Second Hand with H.M. Trawler Malta., Thomas died on 1st of September 1915 at the age of 36.

Thomas was born at Lowestoft on 18 March 1879, a son of Thomas Peter and Mary Ann Armes. In 1881 his family lived at 6 Spurgeon's Score, Lowestoft. By 1891 Thomas' father had died and his mother married James Hales. The family lived at 2 Providence Place, Whapload Road.

A Fourth Hand with Sailing Trawler Loch Fyne (Lowestoft), George died on 6th of September 1915. 

George was born at Pakefield in early 1901, a son of Arthur and Sarah Bunn. In 1901 his family lived at 11 Carlton Road, Pakefield, and this was still their home in 1911.

James was born at Lowestoft in 1869, a son of William and Susan(na) Adams. He was baptised at All Saints' Church, Pakefield, on 25 July 1869, and his family lived at Pakefield. In 1871 their address was Church Street, Pakefield, and by 1881 they were living at 4 Mickelburgh's Cottages, Pakefield.

A Second Hand with Sailing Trawler Loch Fyne (Lowestoft), George died on 6th of September 1915. 

George was born at Lowestoft on 17 November 1878, a son of William and Elizabeth Brown. He was baptised at Saint John's Church, Lowestoft, on 20 March 1889. In 1881 his family lived at 44 Stevens Street, Lowestoft, and by 1891 they were living at 16 Stevens Street.

A Cable Hand with His Majesty's Telegraph Ship Monarch, Harry died on 8th of September 1915 aged 56.

Harry was born at Wheatacre in 1859, a son of William and Joanna Seago. He was baptised at All Saints’ Church, Wheatacre, on 17 July 1859. In 1861 his family lived at The Railway Gate House, Aldeby. This was still their home in 1871 when the eleven year old Harry is recorded as working as an agricultural labourer. By 1881 Harry was working as a fisherman and living at Coleman Square, Lowestoft. 

Noah Ayers
Died:

A Cable Hand with His Majesty's Telegraph Ship Monarch, Noah died on 8th of September 1915 at the age of 50.

Noah was born at Lowestoft in 1865, a son of James and Matilda Ayers. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 5 November 1865. In 1871 the family's address was 'Beach, near the Gas Works' and in 1881 their address was 'By East Street'. By 1881 Noah was working at sea. 

On 12 June 1886 Noah married Martha Maria Betmead at Saint Margaret's Church. In the 1890s they lived at 2 Whapload Road and by 1911 their home was at 20 Worthing Road, Lowestoft.

Christopher Allen Raven
Died:

A Private with 1st Bn., Christopher died on 8th of September 1915 at the age of 20. 

Christopher was born at Carlton Colville in 1895, a son of Robert and late Sarah Eliza Raven. He was baptised at Saint Peter's Church, Carlton Colville, on 29 September 1895. In 1901 they lived 'near Ivy Farm', Beccles Road, Carlton Colville. By 1911 Cristopher's mother had died and his father married Harriet. In 1911 his family lived at 7 Beccles Road, Oulton Broad, and Christopher was a general labourer.

Herbert Henry Lambert
Died:

A Rifleman with 9th Bn., Herbert died on 25th of September 1915 at the age of 24. 

Herbert was born at Lowestoft in 1891, a son of Herbert John Arthur and Fanny Lucy Lambert. In 1901 his family lived at 49 Mariners Street, Lowestoft. By 1911 they were living at 1 Compass Street, Lowestoft, and Herbert assisted in his father's carting business. 

Herbert served with D Squadron of the Suffolk Yeomanry for five years.

A Private with 9th Bn., Albert died on 25th of September 1915 at the age of 27. 

Albert was born at Ilketshall Saint Andrew, Suffolk, in 1889, a son of James and Mary Ann Butcher. Albert was baptised at Saint Andrew’s Church, Ilketshall, on 23 March 1889, and his family lived at Ilketshall. In 1891 his family lived at Ilketshall Saint Andrew. By 1911 Albert was lodging with Elizabeth Frost, at The Street, Lound, and working as a cowman on a farm.

A Private with 1/4th Bn. James died on 25th of September 1915 at the age of 34. 

James was born at Somerleyton in 1881, a son of James William and Mary Ann Kemp. For all of his life James' family lived at 3 Brickfields Cottages, The Street, Somerleyton. In 1911 James worked as a wherryman with the Somerleyton Estate. 

James married Hannah Maria Lound, at Norwich, in 1911. They lived at 3 Old Barge Yard, King Street, Norwich.

A Private with 9th Bn., David died on 25th of September 1915 at the age of 20. 

David was born at South Burlingham in 1895, a son of Charles Roy and Alice Turner. In 1901 his family lived 'By Town Pits', South Burlingham. By 1911 they had moved to Kemp's Heath, Oulton, and David worked as a farm labourer. At some point his parents moved to 8 Meadow Cottages, Oulton, Lowestoft.

David volunteered and enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft. he joined the Suffolk Regiment and arrived in France with the 9th Battalion on 31 August 1915. 

Arthur Jacob Wilson
Died:

A Private with 9th Bn., Arthur died on 25th of September 1915 at the age of 19. 

Arthur was born at Oulton in 1897, a son of Jacob and Jane Wilson. In 1901 his family lived at Woods Loke, Lowestoft. By 1911 they were living at 3 Sunshine Terrace, Marlborough Road, Oulton Broad, and Arthur was an apprentice coach builder. 

Arthur volunteered and enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft. he joined the Suffolk Regiment and arrived in France with the 9th Battalion on 31 August 1915.

A Corporal with 2nd Bn., Charles died on 25th of September 1915 at the age of 30. 

Charles was born at Somerleyton in 1885, a son of Charles and Ellen Balls. In 1891 his family lived next to the Post Office, The Street, Somerleyton. This was still their home in 1901 when Charles worked as a gardener. 

Everard Andrews
Died:

A Private with 2nd Bn., Everard died on 25th of September 1915 at the age of 18. 

Everard was born at Lowestoft in 1896, a son of Frederick James and Rachel Jessie Andrews. He was baptised at Saint John's Church, Lowestoft, on 18 December 1896, and his family lived at 14 Lawson Road, Lowestoft. In 1901 they lived at 14 Lawson Road. By 1911 they were living at 28 Salisbury Road, Lowestoft, and Everard was working as a boy in an engineer's shop in the 'motor industry'.

William Valentine Coleman
Died:

A Private with 2nd Bn., William died on 25th of September 1915 at the age of 28. 

William was born at Ramsgate in 1887, a son of William Danton and Martha Coleman. He was baptised at Saint George's Church, Ramsgate, on 10 April 1887, and his family lived at 22 Liverpool Lawn, Ramsgate. In 1891 his family lived at 64 Maygrove Place, Great Yarmouth. By 1901 William's father had died and his family lived at 9 Stevens Street, Lowestoft. By 1911 they were living at 77 Norwich Road, Lowestoft, and later his mother lived at 36 Denmark Road, Lowestoft.

Neve
Died:

A Private with D Company, 8th Bn., Percy died on 25th of September 1915 at the age of 18. 

Percy was born at Lowestoft in 1896, a son of Charles and Jane Neve. In 1901 his family lived at Bishops Buildings, Mariners Street, Lowestoft. By 1911 Percy’s father had died and his family lived at 3 Mariners Street, Lowestoft, and Percy was a butcher’s boy. Percy's mother later remarried at lived at 15 Albany Road, Lowestoft. 

Stephen wood
Died:

A Sergeant with 11th Bn., Stephen died on 26th of September 1915 at the age of 23.

Stephen was born at Harleston, Norfolk, on 21st February 1892, a son of Jeremiah and Mary Wood. He was baptised at the parish church of Redenhall with Harleston and Wortwell on 30 October 1892, and his family lived at Kirkley, Lowestoft. By 1901 his father had died and his mother had married Thomas Farrow, and they lived at 235 London Road, Lowestoft. Later his mother lived at 12 Payne Street, Lowestoft.

A Pilot with Trinity House, Albert died on 26th of September 1915 at the age of 39.

Albert was born at Lowestoft in 1876, a son of David and Maria Fisher. In 1881 his family lived at 3 Prairie, Lowestoft. By 1891 they were living at 75 London Road, Lowestoft, and this was still their home in 1901. 

In 1897 Albert, and his father David, worked on the Lowestoft collier Mary Stowe and had to be rescued during a severe gale.   

Alfred George Raven
Died:

A Private with 7th Bn., Alfred died on 26th of September 1915 at the age of 21. 

Note: Some records give Alfred's first name as Albert. These include Commonwealth War Graves, Soldiers Died in the Great War and some Census returns. However, when he was born he was registered as Alfred, he was baptised as Alfred and when he enlisted in the Army he gave his first name as Alfred (see service papers at WO 363).

Charles Frederick Howes
Died:

A Private with 9th Bn., Charles died on 26th of September 1915 at the age of 33. 

Charles was born at Blundeston in 1882, a son of Frederick Robert and Hannah Ada Eliza Howes. He was baptised at Saint Mary’s Church, Blundeston, on 4 February 1883. In 1891 his family lived at High Street, Blundeston. In 1901 Charles, lived, and worked, at the Plough Inn, Blundeston, and was an ostler. Later his family lived at Normans Cottage, The Street, Blundeston.

A Private with 4th Bn., Ernest died on 27th of September 1915 at the age of 23. 

Ernest was born at Lound in 1893, a son of Alfred and Harriet Sophy James. Ernest was baptised at Sint John the Baptist Church, Lound, on 30 April 1893. 

In 1901 his family lived at 3 Back Lane, Lound. By 1911 they were living at Stone Cottage, Lound, and later their address was 1 Back Lane, Lound.

In 1911 Ernest worked as an odd-boy at 12 Carlton Terrace House, London. He worked for Sir Savile Crossley who, in 1916, became Baron Somerleyton in 1916.

A Private with 9th Bn., Henry died on 28th of September 1915 at the age of 20.

Henry was born at Lowestoft on 30 January 1894, a son of William Thomas and Mary Emma Clark. Henry was baptised at Christchurch, Lowestoft, on 7 March 1894, and his family lived at 65 Strand Street, Lowestoft. In 1901 his family lived at 1 Strand Street, Lowestoft, and by 1911 they were living at 3 Nelson Road, Lowestoft, and Henry worked as a general cooper. Later his family lived at 124 Raglan Street, Lowestoft.

A Private with 13th Bn., Ernest died on 28th of September 1915 at the age of 26. 

Ernest was born at Carlton Colville in 1890, a son of Benjamin and Rosanna Weavers. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Carlton Colville, on 29 July 1890, and his family lived at Carlton Colville. A note in the baptism register says ‘Died for England September 26th 1915’.

In 1891 his family lived at Bell Corner, Carlton Colville. In 1901 they lived at Mortuway (sic), Carlton Colville. Later his parents lived at Peacock Terrace, Carlton Colville.

A Private with the 51st Battalion, Frank died on 3rd of September 1916 at the age of 36.

Frank was born at Lowestoft in 1880, a son of Edward and Catherine Drew. In 1881 his family lived at 1 Burton’s Cottages, Lowestoft. In 1891 they lived at Rotterdam Road. 

In 1898 Frank was bound over for stealing cigarettes. In 1899 he was convicted, along with John Thompson, of robbery with violence and sent to prison for six months.

A Private  with 1st Bn., Frank died on 4th of September 1916 at the age of 21. 

Frank was born at Lowestoft in 1894, a son of Frederick and Harriet Sarah Baxter. He was baptised at Saint John's Church, Lowestoft, on 6 January 1895 and his family lived at 41 Lawson Road. By 1901 they were living at 19 Cleveland Road, and this was still their home in 1911 when Frank worked as a stonemason's apprentice. Later his parents lived at Burleigh, Kirkley Cliff Road, Lowestoft. 

Oscar Pitcher
Died:

A Skipper with H.M. Trawler Jessie Nutten, Oscar died on 4th of September 1916 at the age of 32. 

Oscar was born at Oulton Broad on 26 February 1884, a son of John and Laura Pitcher. From 14 March 1887 Oscar attended Cunningham School. In 1891 his family lived at 94 Pakefield Street, Kirkley. 

In 1901 Oscar was the fourth hand on the trawler Admiral, LT 349, at Pembroke Dock. Oscar was awarded his certificate of competency as a skipper in 1904.

A Private with 1st Bn. Alfred died on 5th of September 1916 at the age of 16. 

Alfred was born at Saint Leonard's, Sussex, in 1899, a son of Frank Augustus and Maud Holl. In 1901 his family lived at 4 Silverhill Villas, Hastings Saint Matthew's, Sussex. By 1911 his family were living at The Bungalow, Chestnut Avenue, Oulton Broad.

Alfred enlisted at Norwich and joined the 2/6th (Cyclist) Battalion Norfolk Regiment, number 2318. Later he was posted to the 1st Battalion, in France, and renumbered 43137.

A Private with the 2nd Battalion, Richard died on 9th of September 1916 at the age of 22. 

Richard was born at Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1893, a son of Richard Samuel and Margaret Hannah Coker Phillips. In 1901 his family lived at 87 Vine Street, Wallsend. In 1902 Richard’s father died and subsequently his mother married Robert Taylor. In 1911 the family lived at 17 Ontario Road, Lowestoft, and Richard was a painter working for a building company. Later his family lived at 11 Norfolk Street.

William Horace Osborne
Died:

A Rifleman with 1/12th Bn., William died on 9th of September 1916 at the age of 27.  

William was born at Attleborough, Norfolk, on 16 March 1889, a son of William and Mary Ann Osborne. He was baptised at Saint Mary's Church, Attleborough, on 26 May 1889. In 1891 his family lived at 78 New North Road, Attleborough. By 1901 they were living at 25 Salisbury Road, Lowestoft, and later at 33 Salisbury Road.

A Private with 7th Bn. William died on 12th of September 1916 at the age of 38. 

William was born at Orford, Suffolk, in 1877, a son of David John and Harriet Beatton. In 1881 his family lived at The King's Head Inn, Orford, where his father was the licensee. By 1891 William was a boarding pupil at The College, Beccles.

A Private with the 9th Battalion, George died on 13th of September 1916 at the age of 25. 

George was born at Lowestoft on 14 February 1891, a son of William Ling and Elizabeth Sarah Ann Calver. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Kirkley, on 24 February 1891. Throughout his life George’s family lived at 1 Ontario Road, Kirkley. From 1 July 1895 George was a pupil at Kirkley School. Later his parents lived at 117 Portland Street, Norwich.  

In 1911 George worked as a shop assistant at a drapery.  

Alfred Paget Bacon

A Private with the 9th Battalion, Alfred died on 13th of September 1916 at the age of 21. 

Alfred was born at Walthamstow in 1895, a son of Jasper and Edith Mary Bacon. He was baptised at Saint Michael and All Angels Church, Walthamstow, on 18 September 1895. By 1901 Alfred’s father had died and his mother had married William Sarbutt and the family lived at 37 Tyrolean Square, Great Yarmouth. By 1911 they were living at 4 Fleggs Cottages, Moyse Road, Oulton, and Alfred was an assistant to a baker and confectioner.

A Private with the 9th Battalion, Charles died on 13th of September 1916 at the age of 25. 

Charles was born at Lowestoft on 3 July 1891, a son of John and Sarah Ann Hales.  He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 24 July 1891, and his family lived at 4 Erskine Place. In 1901 his family lived at 5 Christchurch Cottages, Lowestoft. By 1911 they were living at 9 Gun Lane, Lowestoft, and Charles was a fish market labourer. Charles' sister, Hannah Hales, lived at Savory Cottages, Saint Johns Road. Lowestoft.

A Private with the 9th Battalion, Alfred died on 13th of September 1916 at the age of 28.

Alfred was born at Garboldisham, Norfolk, in 1888, a son of Alfred and Christina Barrett. He was baptised at Garboldisham on 4 November 1888. In 1891 his family lived at The Street, Garboldisham. By 1901 they were living at the Sand Pit, Haddiscoe, and in 1911 they lived at 5 Station Cottages, Herringfleet, and Alfred was a farm labourer.

A Private with 9th Bn., John died on 13th of September 1916 at the age of 23. 

John was born at Dedham, Essex, on 1892, a son of Charles and Alice Morris. He was baptised at Dedham on 4 September 1892. In 1901 his family lived at High Street, Laxfield. By 1911 they were living at 1 Love Road, Lowestoft, and John was a carpenter. Later his family lived at 79 Sussex Road, Lowestoft, and afterwards at 27 Culver Road, Wokingham Road, Reading Berkshire. 

Frank Woods Smith
Died:

A Lance Corporal with 9th Battalion, Frank died on 13th of September 1916 at the age of 20. 

Frank was born at Norton Subcourse, near Loddon, on 6 April 1896, a son of George Woods and Emma Esther Smith. In 1901 Frank’s mother died and Frank, and his siblings, were living at The Workhouse, Hales, Norfolk. In 1911 he was a boarder at Heckingham, Norfolk, and he worked as a domestic groom.  

Frank volunteered and enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft. He joined the Suffolk Regiment and was posted to the 9th Battalion. 

Thomas Edward Baldry
Died:

A Lance Corporal with 9th Bn., Thomas died on 14th of September 1916 at the age of 21. 

Thomas was born at Lowestoft in 1895, a son of Frederick John and Hannah Baldry. In 1901 his family lived at 16 Haward Street, Lowestoft. In 1911 his family lived at 55 Haward Street and Thomas was a carpenter's apprentice.  

Thomas enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft. He served with the Suffolk Regiment.

Edmund was born at Reedham, Norfolk, on 3 May 1887, a son of William Alfred John and Charlotte Curtis. He was baptised at Acle on 17 July 1887. In 1891 his family lived at 12 Percy Terrace, Coverdale Road, Barking, and by 1901 at 4 Argents Terrace, Barking, and Edmund worked at a dairy. By 1911 his family were living at 12 Rotterdam Road, Lowestoft.

A Private with the 9th Battalion, Sidney died on 16th of September 1916 at the age of 24. 

Sidney was born at Lowestoft in 1892, a son of Frederick and Fanny Stannard. He was baptised at Saint John’s Church on 16 December 1892 and his family lived at Sain John’s Road. In 1901 their address was Turner’s Cottages, 6 Saint John’s Road. By 1911 they were living at 23 Saint John's Road and Sidney was an errand boy.

A Private with the 9th Battalion, Philip died on 16th of September 1916 at the age of 25. 

Philip was born at Lowestoft on 27 February 1892, a son of Philip Norris and Sarah Elizabeth Palmer. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 27 March 1892, and his family lived at 48 Haward Street. In 1901 his family lived at Barrett’s Buildings, Albert Street. In 1911 they lived at 3 Albany Road and Philip was a tram conductor working for Lowestoft Corporation.    

Henry Ernest Mewse
Died:

A Private with the 9th Battalion, Henry died on 16th of September 1916 at the age of 32. 

Henry was born at Lowestoft on 26 April 1883, a son of William James and Mary Ann Mewse. He was baptised at Christchurch, Lowestoft, on 9 January 1884 and his family lived at Christchurch Square, Lowestoft. By 1901 Henry's father had died and his mother remarried. The 1901 Census shows his family still living at Christchurch Square and Henry working as a cooper. By 1911 Henry was working as a fisherman.  

Bertie John Whaite Burwood
Died:

A Lance Sergeant with the 9th Battalion, Bertie died on 16th of September 1916 at the age of 30. 

Bertie was born at Lowestoft in 1886, a son of George Vempley and Martha Burwood. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 7 October 1886. In 1891 his family lived at Lindfield Cottage, Mariners Score, and this was still their home in 1901, when Bertie worked as an errand boy. In 1911 his family were living at Lindfield Cottage and Bertie worked as an export marker for C. and E. Morton at Lowestoft. Later his parents lived at The Grange, Rant Score.

A Private with the 9th Battalion, Ernest died on 16th of September 1916 at the age of 20. 

Ernest was born at Wilby, Suffolk, in 1896, a son of George and Florence Eliza Mutimer. In 1901 his family lived at Crockrells Road, Wilby, and by 1911 they were living at Hall Cottages, Wilby, and Ernest was a cattle-boy on a farm. Later the family lived at 3 Grove Cottages, Carlton Road, Pakefield, before living at 5 Oakland Terrace, Kessingland. 

Hedley Catchpole
Died:

A Sergeant with 9th Bn., Hedley died on 16th of September 1916 at the age of 21. 

Hedley was born at Kessingland in 1897, a son of Thomas James and Edith Emma Catchpole. He was baptised at Saint Edmund's Church, Kessingland, on 6 June 1897. In 1901 his family lived at The Beach, Kessingland, and later at 16 John Street Lowestoft.

In 1911 Hedley was the Deck Hand Cook on the trawler Auld Land Syne, LT 300, at Newlyn, Cornwall.

A Private with the 9th Battalion, Frederick died on 16th of September 1916 at the age of 20. 

Frederick was born at Lowestoft on 1 September 1896, a son of William Emmanuel and Emily Foreman. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Kirkley, on 1 November 1896, and his family lived at 20 Lorne Park Road, and this was still their home in 1901. From 23 March 1903 Frederick were a pupil at Cunningham School. By 1911 his family was living at 4 Wivenoe Cottages, Florence Road.

Frank Victor Burwood

A Private with the 9th Battalion, Charles died on 16th of September 1916 at the age of 22. 

Charles was born at Chelmsford in 1893, a son of Charles Thomas and Nelly Jane Metcalf. In 1901 his family lived at 119 Bevan Street, Lowestoft. By 1911 they were living at 7 Raglan Street and Charles was a billiard maker. Later his parents lived at 223 London Road South.

Charles attended Oulton School and, from 1 September 1903 to 5 February 1904, was a pupil at Saint John's School, before attending Saint Andrew's School.

A Private with the 9th Battalion, David died on 16th of September 1916 at the age of 23. 

David was born at Lowestoft on 2 May 1893, a son of David and Caroline Crane. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 14 June 1893 and his family lived at 40 Tennyson Road. By 1901 his family were living at Burton's Lodge, Gisleham, and in 1911 they were living at White House Lodge, Gisleham, and David worked as a lad on the farm. Subsequently his parents would live at Homestead, Gisleham.

A Private with 1/4th Bn., Leonard died on 16th of September 1916 at the age of 22. 

Leonard was born at Lowestoft in 1894, a son of Henry and Kate Youngs. In 1901 his family lived at 57 Maidstone Road, Lowestoft; by 1911 they were living at 39 Maidstone Road, and Leonard worked as a general labourer. Later his parents lived at 9 Ashley Road, Lowestoft.

A Private with 1/23rd Bn., Cyril died on 16th of September 1916 at the age of 26. 

Cyril was born at Lowestoft in 1889, a son of Arthur James and Elizabeth Mary Blake. In 1891 his family lived at 4 East Raglan Street, Lowestoft, and by 1901 at 4 Stanley Street, Lowestoft. In 1911 they lived at 32 Queen's Street, and Cyril worked as a book compositor. Later his mother lived at 62 The Hemplands, Lowestoft.

A Lance Corporal with the 8th Battalion, Vincent died on 17th of September 1916 at the age of 19. 

Vincent was born at Oulton in 1896, a son of William and Mary Ann Baxter. In 1901 his family lived at Park Road, Rock Estate, Oulton. This was still their address in 1911 when Vincent worked as a messenger boy for a boat builder. Later his parent's address was Verna Cottage, Park Road, Rock Estate.

A Skipper with H.M. Trawler Royalo, Herbert died on 23rd of September 1916 at the age of 42. 

Herbert was born at Kessingland on 30 January 1874, a son of William Henry and Lucy Mary Woolnough. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Kirkley, on 5 April 1874. In 1881 his family lived at 2 Claremont Road and in 1891 at 4 Westbourne Terrace. Later his parents lived at 6 Lorne Road.

A Skipper with H.M. Trawler Silanion, Charles died on 25th of September 1916 at the age of 38. 

Charles was born at York on 26 January 1878, a son of The Revd. Thomas and Diana M. Campbell. He was baptised at Holy Trinity Church, Micklegate, York, on 31 January 1878. In 1881 his family lived at 9 South Parade, York. In 1891 Charles was a pupil at Mr. Townsend’s School, The Hall, Cross House, South Parade, Doncaster. By 1901 the family were living at The Rectory, Ridlington, Norfolk. In 1911 the family home was 290 London Road, and later at 365 London Road.

Richard was born at Lowestoft in 1895, a son of Thomas Charles and Elizabeth Adcock. In 1901 his family lived at 14 Saint John's Road, Lowestoft. By 1911 his family were living at Brickyard Cottages, Oulton Broad, and Richard worked as a bench boy at a saw mill. Later his mother lived at Colville Road, Oulton Broad, Lowestoft.

Wilfred Charles Dawson
Died:

A Corporal with B Battery, 190th Brigade, Wilfred died on 26th of September 1916 at the age of 34. 

Wilfred was born at Great Yarmouth in 1882, a son of Charles William and Margaret Rachael Dawson. In 1891 his family lived at 14 Wellesley Road, Great Yarmouth, and this was still their home in 1901. 

Wilfred attended the University of Birmingham and then became a teacher at West Street School, Farnham. By 1911 he was the headteacher at Shackleford School, Surrey, and then became headmaster of a Carshalton School.

A Private with the 2nd Battalion, Arthur died on 27th of September 1918 at the age of 24. 

Arthur was born at Gisleham on 25 September 1894, a son of Arthur and Mary Ann Newrick. He was baptised at Mutford on 11 November 1894. In 1901 his family lived at The Street, Mutford. By 1911 they were living at Mill Road, Mutford, and Arthur was a miller’s carter.

Arthur volunteered and enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft. He joined the Suffolk Regiment, service number 15447, and on 26 January 1915 arrived in France to join the 2nd Battalion.

A Private with the 7th Battalion, Sidney died on 27th of September 1916 at the age of 26. 

Sidney was born at Lowestoft on 2 April 1891, a son of Robert William and Kate Eliza Brand. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 6 May 1891 and his family lived at Laundry Lane. In 1911 they were still living at Laundry Lane and Sidney was a farm labourer. Later his parents lived at 7 Waveney Terrace, Victoria Road, Oulton Broad.

A Private with the 8th Battalion, Ernest died on 28th of September 1916 at the age of 33. 

Ernest was born at Lowestoft on 7 December 1883, a son of Edward and Eliza Hales. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 3 February 1884. In 1891 his family lived at 11 Cathcart Street. By 1901 they were living at 80 Clapham Road and Ernest was a bricklayer, possibly working with his father. Ernest's mother died in 1902. Later his father lived at 25 Bevan Street. 

Gordon Henry Norman
Died:

A Private with the 8th Battalion, Gordon died on 28th of September 1916 at the age of 27. 

Gordon was born at Lowestoft in 1888, a son of James George and Margaret Ellen Norman. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 15 February 1893, and his family lived at 10 Reeve Street, which was Gordon’s home for the rest of his life.  

In February 1907 Gordon joined the Great Eastern Railway as a Deck Hand on the tug Lowestoft. By 1916 he was working for the G.E.R. as a bridgeman at Lowestoft Harbour.  

Sidney John Carr
Died:

A Private with 7th Bn. Sidney died on 30th of September 1916 at the age of 29. 

Sidney was born at Lowestoft on 18 July 1887, a son of James George and Sarah Ann Carr. He was baptised at Christchurch, Lowestoft, on 10 August 1887, and his family lived at 4 Church Road. Sidney attended Clapham Road School and, on 26 February 1894, became a pupil at Saint Margaret's School, Lowestoft. By 1901 his family were living at 50 Ipswich Road and Sidney worked as a grocer's boy. In 1911 Sidney worked as a blacksmith's striker.

An Engineman with H.M.S. Pembroke, Charles died on 3rd of September 1917 at the age of 29. 

Charles was born at Lowestoft on 1 June 1888, a son of William Joseph and Jane Ethel Clarke. In 1891 his family lived at Cooper’s Cottages, The Hemplands, and by 1901 at Mill House, Church Road. Later his parents lived at 32 Ipswich Road.

In 1911 Charles was an engineer and fish packer on the trawler John and Sarah, LT 289, at Penzance. By July 1915 he was living at 115 Cambridge Road. 

Thomas Samuel Cropley
Died:

An Engineman with H.M.S. Pembroke, Thomas died on 3rd of September 1917 at the age of 34. 

Thomas was born at Lowestoft on 16 November 1882, a son of Robert Richard and Hannah Eliza Cropley. He was baptised at Christchurch, Lowestoft, on 6 December 1882. In 1891 his family lived at 23 The Hemplands, and this was still their home in 1901, when Thomas worked as a fisherman.

A Stoker with H.M.S. Pembroke, James died on 4th of September 1917 at the age of 25.

James was born at Lowestoft on 14 August 1892, a son of James John and Florence Edith Pye. He was baptised at Christchurch, Lowestoft, on 31 August 1892 and his family lived at East Street. By 1901 his family were living at 1 Whapload Road. By 1911 the family home was 76 Whapload Road, and in the 1920s at 20 Chapel Street.

Alexander McDougal Westgarth

A Stoker 1st Class with H.M.S. Pembroke, Alexander died on 4th of September 1917 at the age of 32. 

Alexander was born at Newcastle-upon-Tyne on 28 June 1885, a son of James and Jane Westgarth. In 1891 his family lived at 12 Severn Terrace, Carlton Colville, and by 1901 at Worcester Terrace, Carlton Colville.

An Engineman with H.M. Trawler Eros. Samuel died on 5th of September 1917 at the age of 31. 

Samuel was born at Kessingland on 20 September 1885, a son of Samuel and Elizabeth Marjoram. He was baptised at Saint Edmund's Church, Kessingland, on 29 November 1885. In 1891 His family lived at Church Road, Kessingland, and by 1901 at Prospect Cottages, Kessingland, and Samuel was a shoemaker. 

Ernest Reginald Rushmore

A Second Lieutenant with 4th Battalion attached to the 11th Battalion, Ernest died on 6th of September 1917 at the age of 20. 

Ernest was born at Great Yarmouth on 22 June 1897, a son of John Ernest and Caroline Sarah Rushmore. He was baptised at Great Yarmouth on 29 August 1897 and his family lived at Southtown. In 1901 his family lived at 1 Richmond Place, Kirkley. By 1911 the family were living at 12 Grosvenor Road and later at Victoria House, The Esplanade, Lowestoft.

A Private with the 2/7th Battalion, Arthur died on 9th of September 1917 at the age of 18.

Arthur was born at Oulton Broad in 1898, a son of Edward and Emma Cullingford. He was baptised at Saint Mark’s Church, Oulton Broad, on 13 July 1899. In 1901 his family lived at the grocer’s shop, Bridge Road, Oulton Broad, and this was still their home in 1911.

Raymond Ambrose Thacker

An Engineman with H.M. Trawler Loch Ard, Raymond died on 10th of September 1917 at the age of 29. 

Raymond was born at Kessingland on 11 April 1888, a son of John and Emily Thacker. He was baptised at Saint Edmund’s Church, Kessingland, on 25 November 1888. In 1891 his family lived at Elm Cottages, London Road, Kessingland. His mother died in 1896 and his father remarried in 1898. By 1911 his father was living at 11 Elm Cottages, Kessingland.  

Reginald Charles Spalding

A Corporal with the 3rd Battalion, Reginald died on 12th of September 1917 at the age of 28.

A Bombardier with E Battery, Ernest died on 12th of September 1917 at the age of 25. 

Ernest was born at Lowestoft in 1892, a son of Robert Charles and Emma Dowe. He was baptised at Saint John’s Church on 2 February 1896 and his family lived at 29 Raglan Street and this was still their family home in 1911.

Ernest was working as a baker, for S.W. Turner, when he joined the 4th Battalion Suffolk Regiment (Territorial Force), at Lowestoft, on 15 February 1909. He continued to serve with the territorials until April 1911.

A Private with the 9th Battalion, Frederick died on 12th of September 1917 at the age of 27. 

Frederick, also known as Freddie, was born at Pakefield on 5 April 1890, a son of Benjamin and Ada Crake. In 1891 his family lived at 86 Pakefield Street, where his father kept a butcher’s shop. This was his parents’ home throughout Frederick’s life. On 1 July 1895 Frederick became a pupil at Kirkley School and, on 13 April 1904, he became a pupil at Lowestoft School of Science. In 1911 Frederick was a butcher’s assistant and believed to have worked with his father. 

George Robert Reynolds

A Private with the 11th Battalion, George died on 13th of September 1917 at the age of 29. 

George was born at Aldeby, Norfolk, on 10 September 1887, a son of Frederick and Harriet Reynolds. He was baptised at Aldeby on 9 October 1887. In 1891 his family lived at The Street, Aldeby. By 1901 they were living at 85 Saint Margaret’s Road, Lowestoft, and this was still the family home in 1911.

A Private with the 2nd Battalion, Leonard died on 16th of September 1917.

Leonard was born at Lowestoft on 28 March 1892, a son of William George and Honor Womack. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 29 April 1892, and his family lived at 32 Crown Street. In 1901 his family lived at 81 Seago Street. By 1911 Leonard’s mother had died, his father remarried, and the family lived at 6 Kent Road and Leonard worked as a sawyer for a timber merchant. Leonard’s sister, Mrs. Abia Ethel Mulberry, lived at 98 Beeches Road.

John Howes

A Corporal with the 7th Battalion, John died on 19th of September 1917 at the age of 21.

John was born at Wymondham in 1896, a son of Eliza Howes. His mother married John Elvin in late 1896. In 1901 his family lived at The Lizard, Wymondham, and this was still their address in 1911.   

On 31 May 1915 John married Amelia Rudd at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, John was ‘a soldier billeted at Lowestoft’ and Amelia lived at 6 Love Road. Later Amelia lived at 4 Epsom Terrace, Kirkley Run. In 1919 she married Frederick Moxey.

A Private with the 7th Battalion, Frederick died on 19th of September 1917 at the age of 33. 

Frederick was born at Aldeby, Norfolk, in 1884, a son of (Susannah) Elizabeth Barwood. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Carlton Colville, on 15 December 1889. A marginal note in the baptism register has ‘Died for England 1917.’ In 1885 Frederick’s mother married Robert Manning and in 1891 the family lived ‘near the Railway Station’, Carlton Colville. By 1901 they were living at Khartoum Cottages, Carlton Colville, and Frederick was a general labourer.

William was born at Lowestoft on 21 March 1888, a son of James and Sarah Edwards. In 1891 his family lived at 44 West Raglan Street. He was baptised at Christchurch, Lowestoft, on 2 September 1896 and his family lived at 44 Stanley Street. This was still the family home in 1911.

Charles was born at Corton in 1885, a son of John and Mary A. High. In 1891 his family lived at High Street, Corton, and they were still living at High Street 1901, by which time Charles was working as a gardener. In 1911 Charles was living at Crown Point Gardens, Trowse, Norwich, and working as a domestic gardener.

George was born at Lowestoft on 26 June 1895, a son of James and Mary Ann Hall. He was baptised at Christ Church, Lowestoft, on 11 August 1895, and his family lived at 4 Anguish Street. By 1901 they were living at 18 Factory Street, and by 1911 at 3 Worthing Road and George was a drift net fisherman.

Frederick was born at Lowestoft in 1887, a son of Frederick and Sarah A. Hayhoe. In 1891 they lived at 81 Cambridge Road. By 1901 they were living at 31 Edinburgh Road, and Frederick was a part-time barber’s assistant. In 1911 his parents lived at 24 Tennyson Road, and later his mother lived at 30 Mariners Street. In 1911 Frederick was a tinsmith, working at Smiths Fish Preserving Factory, and he lodged at 16 Market Place, Great Yarmouth.

Silas was born at Lowestoft in early 1881, a son of Silas and Elizabeth Brown. In 1881 his family lived at Mills Road, Lowestoft. In 1891 their address was 58 Mills Road. By 1911 his family were living at 64 High Street. 

In 1908 Silas married Gertrude Elizabeth Marshall: this was registered in the Wangford district. By 1911 they were living at Albert Road, Bracknell, Berkshire. Probate records show their address as Las Palomas, Albert Road, Bracknell.

Harold Thomas Whyard

A Lance Corporal with 1/10th Bn. Harold died on 21st of September 1917 at the age of 21.

Harold was born at Lowestoft in 1896, a son of Arthur and Ellen (Nellie) Whyard. His family home was at 24 Norwich Road. In 1911 Harold worked as an assistant oilskin dresser at an outfitter's shop. Later his parents lived at 65 Trafalgar Street, Lowestoft. Harold's mother died in 1915 (his father later married Eva Riley).

James was born at Lowestoft in 1877, a son of William James and Caroline Jackson Ayers. In 1881 his family lived at 34 East Street and by 1891 at 265 Raglan Street. By 1911 his parents were living at 4 Mummerys Buildings, Whapload Road.

Between 1901 and 1911 James began using his middle name, Alfred, as his first name. 

Robert Heslop Saunders

A Private with 11th Bn. Robert died on 23rd of September 1917 at the age of 20. 

Robert was born at Lowestoft on 2 February 1897, a son of Robert Heslop and Elizabeth Saunders. In 1901 his family lived at of 77 Cambridge Road, Lowestoft, and this was Robert's home throughout his life. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church on 21 September 1902.

Robert joined the Army at Lowestoft in March 1916. He joined The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment) and in September 1916 was posted to the 11th Battalion in France and served with C Company.

Harold was born at Lowestoft on 29 March 1898, a son of Charles and Elizabeth Adaline Forder. He was baptised at Saint Peter's Church, Kirkley, on 2 November 1900, and his family lived at 86 Carlton Road. In 1901 his family lived at 5 Clement Square, Kirkley. By 1911 they were living at The Market Place, Loddon and later his mother lived at New Road, Acle, Norfolk. 

Edward George Felgate

A Rifleman with 1/17th Bn., Edward died on 25th of September 1917 at the age of 21.

Edward was born at Lowestoft in 1896, a son of James Edward and Anna Maud Felgate. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 2 December 1896, and his family lived at 12 Cambridge Road. This was still their home in 1911 when Edward worked as a fish merchant's errand boy. Later his parents lived at 182 Raglan Street, Lowestoft.

Herbert was born at Forncett Saint Mary, Norfolk, in 1897, a son of Frederick and Sarah Ann Drake. In 1901 his family lived at Norwich Road, Forncett St. Mary. By 1911 they were living at Victoria Road, Oulton Broad, and Herbert was a jobbing gardener.  

In 1916 Herbert married Elsie Sabina Bryant: this was registered in the Mutford district. In 1918 Elsie lived at 4 Waveney Cottages, Beccles Road, Oulton Broad.

A Lieutenant with the 8th Battalion, Harold died on 26th of September 1917 at the age of 20. 

Harold was born at Lowestoft on 29 May 1897, a son of Henry Robert and Agnes M. Boardley. In 1901 his family lived at 186 Denmark Road. From 15 September 1908 Harold attended Lowestoft School of Science, and his family lived at Sunnyhill, The Avenue, Lowestoft. In 1911 Harold was a patient at Lowestoft Sanitorium, Rotterdam Road. 

Harold was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the King’s Shropshire Light Infantry on 10 September 1915. He was promoted to Lieutenant on 1 July 1917.

A Private with the 2/5th Battalion, William died on 26th of September 1917 at the age of 25. 

William is believed to have been born at Northill, Bedfordshire, in 1891, a son of John and Clara Clark. In 1901 his family lived at Irwell Green, Northill, and by 1911 at Ickwell, Biggleswade, when William worked as a carter on a farm. 

William married Daisy Kate Sarbutt at Lowestoft Register Office on 16 February 1916 and they lived at 8 Sandringham Road. Later Daisy lived at 25 Sandringham Road. She died in 1918.

A Private with the 1/4th Battalion, Cecil died on 26th of September 1917 at the age of 21. 

Cecil was born at Lowestoft in 1896, a son of Charles and Lucy Layton. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 19 July 1896. In 1901 his family lived at 23 Jacob’s Street, and this was the family home for the rest of Cecil’s life. In 1911 Cecil worked as a boot repairer’s assistant. 

Cecil volunteered and enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft. He joined the Suffolk Regiment, service number 2062, and was posted to the 6th (Cyclist) Battalion.

A Gunner with 260th Siege Battery, Walter died on 26th of September 1917 at the age of 20. 

Walter was born at Oulton in 1896, a son of Simon George and Kathleen Maud Cooper. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 3 February 1897. In 1901 his family lived at Oulton Street. By 1911 they were living at 1 Pretoria Terrace, Rock Estate, Oulton Broad.

In 1901 his family lived at Mill Lane, Corton. By 1911 his family were living at 5 Heath Cottages, Oulton Broad, and later his parents lived at Gayes Nurseries, 5 Heath Road, Oulton Broad.

George was born at Lowestoft on 20 September 1877, a son of (Samuel) Richard and Mary Ann Sabberton. By 1881 his family was living at 34 Stevens Street.

Walter was born at Hopton on 4 December 1883, a son of Henry and Anna Darkins. In 1891 his family lived at The Street, Lound.

Leonard was born at Lowestoft in 1885, a son of William James Williams and Susan Elliott Williams. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 17 April 1885. In 1891 his family lived at 110 Raglan Street, Lowestoft. Leonard attended The College, Beccles. By 1911 his family were living at Kilwimung, 46 Alexandra Road, Lowestoft, and Leonard worked as a clerk at a fishing business.

A Gunner with 295th Siege Battery, Amos died on 26th of September 1917 at the age of 19. 

Amos was born at Carlton Colville in 1898, a son of John and Sarah Solomon. In 1901 his family lived at Francis Terrace, Carlton Road, Carlton Colville. By 1911 they were living at 3 Dell Road, Oulton Broad. Amos’ mother died in 1913. 

Amos enlisted in the Army at Bury St. Edmunds. He joined the Royal Garrison Artillery, service number 141850, and was posted to France to serve with 295 Siege Battery.

A Gunner with 96th Siege Battery, Sidney died on 27th of September 1917 at the age of 41. 

Sidney was born at Kennington in 1876, a son of Jethro and Emma J. Marwood. In 1881 his family lived at 3 Clayton Terrace, White Horse Street, Lambeth. By 1891 Sidney’s father had died and Sidney lived with his mother at Saint George’s Mansions, Drake Street, Holborn, and Sidney worked as a junior clerk in an export department. In 1901 Sidney lodged at 2 Lansdown Terrace, Weston, Somerset, and he worked as a clerk.

Arthur was born at Upton, Norfolk, in 1883, a son of James and Frances Wright. He was baptised at Acle on 30 July 1883. In 1891 his family lived at Moulton Road, Acle. By 1901 his family were living at Hall Road, Oulton Broad, and Arthur worked as a labourer and an iron works. 

Arthur married Maude Ethel Sayer in 1907. By 1911 they were living 'near' The Street, Blundeston, and Arthur was a labourer with the Great Eastern Railway Company.

A Private with 717th Mechanical Transport Company. Albert died on 30th of September 1917 at the age of 40. 

Albert was born at Lowestoft on 19 October 1876, a son of Arthur and Lucy Barnard. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 3 December 1876. In 1881 his family lived at 10 Summer Road and by 1891 they were living at 21 Saint John’s Road and Albert was a refreshment room assistant. 

In 1901 Albert worked as a groom at The Stables, The Severals, Newmarket.

Fred was born at Shipmeadow, Suffolk, in 1882. His mother, Elizabeth Bullen, married Walter Fletcher at Lowestoft in 1888. In 1891 his family lived at 31 Reeve Street and later at 13 Ipswich Road, Lowestoft. 

Fred married Mary around 1901. She was from Bedford. 

In 1901 Fred and Mary were living at 2 Saint Cuthbert's Street, Bedford, and Fred worked as a crane driver at an electric engineering works.

Arthur was born at Lowestoft on 14 September 1884, a son of Arthur and Charlotte Britteon Mason. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 4 January 1885. In 1891 his family lived at 16 Laundry Lane. In 1901 they lived at 71 Norwich Road and Arthur may have been a trawl fisherman. Later his mother lived at 58 May Road.

Herbert was, according to the 1891 and 1901 Censuses, born at Henstead (though one sources states Carlton Colville) on 29 January 1890, a son of Arthur and Elizabeth Turrell. In 1891 his family lied at Hulver Street, Henstead, and in 1901 they lived at Ladds Cottages, Carlton Colville. By 1911 they were living at Wood Cottage, Mutford.

Maxwell was born at Lowestoft on 31 August 1898, a son of Isaiah and Annie Elizabeth Munnings. He was baptised at Saint Peter's Church, Kirkley, on 23 September 1898. His family lived at 'Truro', Lorne Road, Kirkley. By 1901 they were living at 126 Beaconsfield Road, and by 1911 at 30 Payne Street, Lowestoft.

George was born at Oulton in 1899, a son of George and Jane Harbord. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 16 August 1899 and his family lived at Hope Cottage, Hall Lane. George joined the Great Eastern Railway in December 1913 and in 1917 he was a stoker at Lowestoft (Civil Engineering Department) and he joined the National Union of Railwaymen on 14 September 1917.

In 1871 his family lived at Clarence Street, Milton. By 1881 they had moved to Mundesley, Norfolk, where his father was a Coast Guard.

John was born at Lowestoft on 22 June 1898, a son of John and Elizabeth Alice Mallett. Between 1901 and 1911 his family lived at 60 Cambridge Road. John attended Church Road School until 1 February 1905 when he joined Saint Margaret’s School. Later his parents lived at 64 Sussex Road.

James was born at Lowestoft in 1899, a son of James and Lavinia Waters. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 5 May 1899, and his family lived at 223 Clapham Road. By 1901 his family were living at 26 Reeve Street and this was James’ home for the rest of his life.

James enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft. He joined the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, service number 38291, and was posted to the 16th Battalion in France.

Walter was born at Pakefield on 9 March 1898, a son of Richard Henry and Laura Balls. In 1901 his family lived at 2 Homestead Row, Pakefield, and later at Bourne Terrace. Walter's mother died in 1903 and in 1907 his father married Lily Knights. In 1911 his family lived at 76 Saint George's Road, Lowestoft. 

Walter attended Cunningham Infant School from 15 April 1901 until 8 February 1907, when he became a pupil at Morton Road School.

Bernard was born at Lowestoft on 27 January 1897, a son of Joseph and Eliza Jane Mann. In 1901 his family lived at 2 Raglan Street and in 1911 at 51 Roman Road. Later his parents lived at 103 Clapham Road. Bernard was educated at Lowestoft and subsequently worked in the office of his uncle, Jabez Mann, engineers, at Sevenoaks, Kent.

John was born at Kirkley on 12 March 1898, a son of Edith Hellen. John is not shown in the 1901 but on 18 March 1901 he joined Kirkley School, and his family lived at 90 Carlton Road. By 1906 he was living with his grandparents at Savoy Cottage, Saint John’s Road, and he attended Saint John’s School from 19 March 1906 to 1911. By 1911 John’s mother was living at 1 Market Place, Kessingland, and she sometimes used the surname Bird.

James was born at Wrentham, Suffolk, in 1899, a son of James and Martha Ann Garnham. In 1901 his family lived at Hall Farm, Benacre, Suffolk. By 1911 James’ father had died and his family lived at 10 Oaklands Terrace, London Road, Pakefield. His mother married Alfred Andrews and lived at 4 Catherine Terrace, London Road, Pakefield.

His family lived at 2 Tethey Place, West Raglan Street. In 1891 their address was 63 West Raglan Street. In 1901 his family lived at 130 Saint Leonard's Road, Kirkley, and by 1911 at 22 Beaconsfield Road.

Denny's actual 'birth' name was Daniel. However, when he enlisted the Army recorded his first name as Dennis and Commonwealth War Graves recorded him as Denny. He was born at Lowestoft in 1886, a son of Thomas and Hannah Rebecca Lythaby. Between 1891 and 1918 his family lived at 5 Scarle's Buildings, Whapload Road, Lowestoft. Later his mother lived at 70 Whapload Road, Beach, Lowestoft. In 1901 Denny worked as a bricklayer's labourer.

On 16 December 1915 William married Ethel Maud Newson at Saint Margaret’s Church. Ethel lived at 41 Oxford Road.

Harold was born at Lowestoft on 21 February 1894, a son of Arthur and Isabel Maude Aldred. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 14 March 1894 and at that time his family lived at 13 Thurston Road. By 1901 his family were living at 233 Raglans Street, Lowestoft. In 1911 Harold's family were living at 5 Beresford Road, and Harold worked as a milk boy.

Albert was born at Fisherton Delamere, Wiltshire, on 4 June 1891, a son of James William and Frances Helen Cornish. He was baptised at Fisherton Delamere on 26 July 1891 and his family lived at Bapton. By 1901 they were living at the Dairy House, at the College of Agriculture, North Clanford, Hampshire. In 1911 his family lived at Benacre and Albert was a farm stockman.

A Seaman with H.M. Trawler Elise., Cecil died on 22nd of September 1918 at the age of 22. 

Cecil was born at Mutford on 1 April 1896, a son of Arthur and Alice Sharman. He was baptised at Saint Andrew's Church, Mutford, on 1 May 1898. In 1901 his family lived at Hulver Road, Mutford, and this was still the family address in 1911.

 The 1911 Census shows William working as a cow boy.

A Gunner with the Royal Horse Artillery, Charles died on 23rd of September 1918 aged 28. 

Charles was born at Kirkley on 8 February 1890, a son of Charles and Anna Maria Lingwood. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Kirkley, on 6 April 1890. In 1891 his family lived at 15 Lorne Road. Between 1901 and 1911 they lived at 67 Lorne Park Road and in 1911 Charles was a general carter.

A Sergeant with 1st Aircraft Supply Depot, Thomas died on 23rd of September 1918 aged 27. 

Thomas was born at Hulver, Suffolk, in 1891, a son of John and Emily Aldous. In 1901 his family lived at The Police Station, Earl Soham, where his father was a Police Sergeant. In 1911 his family lived at Albert Road, Framlingham, and Thomas was a carpenter’s apprentice. Later his family lived at Church Road, Kessingland.

A Private with the 1st Battalion, Leonard died on 23rd of September 1918 aged 19.

Leonard was born at King's Lynn in 1899, a son of Herbert and Elizabeth Pointer. In 1901 his family lived at Kimberley Place, Victoria Avenue, Hunstanton. In 1911 his family were living at 13 Milton Road, Lowestoft, and later they lived at 12 Surrey Street.

Leonard enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft and served with The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment) and was posted to the 1st Battalion in France.

A Private with the 2nd Battalion, Arthur died on 23rd of September 1918 aged 20. 

Arthur was born at Lowestoft on 28 January 1898, a son of Walter Alexander and Matilda Ann Budds. He was baptised at Saint John’s Church on 6 March 1898 and his family lived at 5 Norwich Road. In 1901 his family lived at 57 Stanley Street, and this was Arthur’s home for the rest of his life. Arthur was a pupil at Hervey Street School and then joined Saint John’s School on 1 February 1905. In 1911 Arthur was a shoemaker’s errand boy.

A Private with the 2nd Battalion, Walter died on 23rd of September 1918 aged 33.

Walter was born at Lowestoft on 19 February 1885, a son of James and Ellen Hall. He was baptised at Christ Church on 1 April 1885 and his family lived at 24 Anguish Street. By 1891 they were living at 22 Spurgeon Street and in 1911 they lived at 2 Spurgeon Street, and Walter was a fisherman.

A Private with the 8th Battalion, Sidney died on 24th of September 1918 aged 22. 

Sidney was born at Kessingland in 1896, a son of Frederick George and Laura Edwards. He was baptised at Saint Edmund’s Church, Kessingland, on 6 September 1896 and his family lived at Upper Kessingland. In 1901 his family lived at 32 Seago Street, Lowestoft, and in 1911 at 27 Princes Road when Sidney was a chemist’s errand boy. Later his parents lived at 164 Saint Peters Street.

Frederick  Clarke

A Private with the 18th Battalion, Fred died on 24th of September 1918 at the aged 40. 

Frederick, often known as Fred, was born at Lowestoft on 3 July 1878, a son of Charles and Charlotte (Lottie) Clarke. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 6 October 1878. In 1881 his family lived at 22 Saint Peter’s Street and in 1891 they lived at 309 Raglan Street, and in 1901 at 7 Jacob’s Street, and Fred was a housepainter.

A Lance Corporal with the 9th Bn., William died on 26th of September 1918 at the age of 22. 

William was born at Lowestoft in 1896, a son of Susannah Calthorpe. In 1911 he was an inmate at Lothingland House (Workhouse), Oulton Broad. A Pension Record Card shows that his mother also resided at Lothingland House (Workhouse), Oulton Broad, after William's death.

William's first names were William Algernon. Some records show his first name, other only his middle name. William was born at Ashill, Norfolk, in 1890, a son of William and Lydia Banks. He was baptised at Ashill on 31 August 1890. In 1891 his family lived at Panworth Hall Farm, Long Drove, Ashill. By 1901 his family were living at Rectory Road, Mellis, Suffolk. William's mother died and his father remarried and in 1911 was living at Rumsby's Cottages, Gisleham Road, Gisleham.

Owen was born at Lowestoft in 1891, a son of Charles Thomas Coleby and Lily Balls. In 1901 his family lived at 20 Alma Road, and this was still their home in 1911 when Owen worked as a grocer's assistant. 

On 20 March 1913 Owen married Annie Florence Rutter at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft. Owen was a grocer living at 12 Alma Road, and Annie lived at 7 Saint Margaret's Road. Their home was at 19 Melbourne Road, Lowestoft.

A Private with the 4th Battalion, Andrew died on 27th of September 1918 at the age of 19. 

Andrew was born at Lowestoft on 5 March 1899, a son of Frances Elizabth Spurgeon. In 1901 he lived with his mother and brother at 7 Gun Lane, where his mother was housekeeper for William Andrews, and this was still their home in 1911. Andrew was a pupil at Church Road School and became a pupil at Saint Margaret’s School on 29 October 1906. Later his mother lived at 17 Chapel Street, Lowestoft.

John was born at Lowestoft on 4 August 1879, a son of John and Emma Mariah Bond. He was baptised at Christ Church on 28 March 1880. In 1881 his family lived at 5 South Arnold Street, and in 1891 at Walton Road which was still their residence in 1901 when John was an apprentice sailmaker.

Sir James Domville

A Lieutenant with the Royal Navy (Retired List), Sir James died on 13th of September 1919 at the age of 29. 

James was born at Edinburgh on 10 December 1889, a son of Rear Admiral Sir William Cecil H. and Lady Anne Josephine Moselle Domville. Because of his hereditary title he was known as Sir James Domville. In 1891 James was staying at his uncle’s home, Linden Hall, Morpeth, Northumberland. In 1901 James lived with his family at The Chantry, Sproughton, near Ipswich.

An Able Seaman with H.M.S. Phaeton., James died on 27th of September 1919 at the age of 23. 

James was born at Carlton Colville on 23 May 1897, a son of Edwin and Sarah Bullock. He was baptised at Saint Peter's Church, Carlton Colville, on 12 September 1897, and his family lived at Carlton Colville. By 1901 his father had died and his family lived at 2 White Horse Street, Lowestoft. By 1911 they were living at 5 Compass Street, Lowestoft, and James was a baker's errand boy. James' mother married John Moore in 1917.

John was born at Whitton, Ipswich on 9 September 1869, a son of William and Mary Ann Day. In 1871 his family lived at Henly Road, Whitton. By 1891 John was living with his widowed mother at 23 Great Wingfield Street, Ipswich, and John was a brewer's labourer.    

On 19 January 1892 John married Sarah Hannah Meadows at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, John was a smacksman and they both lived at 5 Burton Place, The Beach, Lowestoft.

A Deck Hand with Steam Trawler Lindsey (Boston), Henry died on 10th of September 1920 at the age of 19. 

Henry was born at Lowestoft in late 1901. He was a son of William Charles and Harriet Mary Garnham. In 1911 his family lived at 5 Eastern Square, Whapload Road. What exactly happened to Henry’s biological father is not known, but in 1916 his mother married Henry Horton Forwood and it seems that, thereafter, Henry used the surname Forwood. His family lived at 33 Police Station Road.

Formerly a Seaman with Benbow Battalion Royal Naval Division, Bertie died on 20th of September 1920 at the age of 25. 

Bertie was born at Herringfleet on 30 March 1895 (not 1894 as found in some sources), a son of George Frederick and Agnes Ward. In 1901 his family lived at 22 The Street, Lound. And they were still living at The Street in 1911.

William was born at Pakefield on 24 August 1895, a son of William Durrant and Susan Warford. In 1915 William lived at Rochester Road, and then at 8 Rant Score East. 

John Arthur Trollope

A Chief Officer with S.S. Bibury (London), John died on 2nd of September 1940 aged 42.

John was born at Lowestoft on 1 January 1898, a son of Cecil and Ellen Trollope. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 28 January 1898 and his family lived at 97 Queens Road. By 1901 they were living at 100 Beresford Road and in 1911 they lived at 66 Saint Margaret’s Road which was the family home until at least 1939. 

John was educated privately until 17 September 1907 when he joined the Lowestoft School of Science.

A Leading Seaman with H.M.S. Sheldrake, Francis died on 7th of September 1940 at the age of 22. 

Francis was born at Lowestoft on 16 December 1917, a son of Francis William and Elsie Maria Gower. Francis was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 13 January 1918, and his family lived at 12 Albany Road, Lowestoft. Francis' father died in 1936 and his mother remarried and the family lived at 63 Worthing Road, Lowestoft.

James was born at Lowestoft on 11 September 1899, a son of James Alfred and Georgina Culham. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church on 15 March 1903 (the same day as his brother Walter) and his family lived at 65 Seago Street and this was still their address in 1911 and 1921. 

Cyril Catchpole
Died:

A Civilian, Cyril died on 11th of September 1940, aged 25. Cyril was a Lightshipman on the Trinity House Light Vessel at South Goodwin.

Cyril was born on 7 December 1914, a son of Cyril and Madeline Catchpole. Cyril was baptised at Saint Edmund's Church, Kessingland, on 4 July 1915 and at that time his family were living at Fern Cottage, Kessingland. Cyril's father served with the Royal Naval Reserve during the First World War.

The 1939 Register shows Cyril's address as Davies Cottages, Kessingland Beach, Lowestoft, and shows that he worked as a seaman.

A Police Constable, Robert died on 18th September 1940 at the age of 45. 

Robert was born at Gisleham on 31 July 1895, a son of Joseph and Mary Elizabeth Winney. He was baptised at Gisleham on 1 September 1895. In 1901 his family lived at 3 Sandy Lane, Gisleham. By 1911 they were living at Coopers Cottages, Gisleham, and Robert was a drifter fisherman and in 1915 they were living at Black Street, Gisleham.

A Third Hand with Steam Trawler Bass Rock (Aberdeen), John died on 24th of September 1940 aged 36. 

John was born at Lowestoft on 8 January 1904, a son of Maurice and Mary Jane Tobutt. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Kirkley, on 1 July 1904 and his family lived at 21 Kimberley Road. John had a twin brother, Benjamin. By 1911 his family were living at 5 Chapel Street and this was still their home in 1921 when John was a fisherman working for Leonard Tripp of Old Chapel Street.

An Ordinary Signalman with H.M. Trawler Stella Sirius, Alan died on 25th of September 1940 aged 22. 

Alan was born at Lowestoft on 16 October 1917, a son of Herbert and Jessie Frances Wilsher. In 1921 his family lived at 12 The Gables, Oulton Broad, and by 1939 their home was at 45 Beccles Road.

In 1939 Alan worked as a window dressing instructor and lodged at 12 Lime Hill Road, Royal Tunbridge Wells. 

Died:

A Seaman with H.M. Trawler Recoil. Douglas died on 28th of September 1940 at the age of 22. 

Douglas was born at Lowestoft on 27 March 1918, a son of Robert Philip and Agnes Gooch. He was baptised at Saint John's Church, Lowestoft, and his family lived at 23 Clemence Street and this was their address in 1939. The 1939 Register states that Douglas was 'Royal Naval Reserve - called up in September'.

Douglas was serving on the minesweeping trawler Recoil when it was mined and sank in the English Channel off Portland Bill. Seventeen crew, including Douglas, were killed.

A Civilian, Isaac died on 29th of September 1940 at the age of 62.

Isaac was born at Barnby on 6 March 1878 a son of Peter and Sarah Ann Baxter. In 1881 his family lived at Barnby and in 1891 they lived at The Crown, Beccles Road, Carlton Colville, where his father was the publican. In 1901 Isaac was the mate on the trawler Speedwell at Newlyn Harbour. 

Bertie Edward Thacker

A Civilian, Bertie died on 29th of September 1940 aged 56. 

Bertie was born at Kessingland on 8 February 1884, a son of Samuel and Mary Ann Thacker. In 1891 his family lived at Kessingland. 

Bertie married Clarinda Eliza Blowers at Saint Edmund’s Church, Kessingland, on 2 May 1906. Bertie was a fisherman and they both lived at Kessingland. In 1911 they lived at Verbena Place, London Road, Kessingland, and Bertie was a fisherman. This was still their home in 1918.

A Civilian, James died on 29th of September 1940 at the age of 54. 

James was born at Lowestoft on 1 March 1886, a son of Joseph and Angetta Roope. In 1891 his family lived at 47 Queen's Road, Lowestoft, and this was still their home in 1901 when James worked as a railway clerk, and in 1911 when James worked as a tram conductor with Lowestoft Borough Council.

James served for three years in the Norfolk Volunteers. 

In 1912 James married Bertha Chapman. They lived at Wellington Cottage, Pakefield Road, Lowestoft.

A Civilian, Frank died on 29th of September 1940 aged 47. 

Frank was born at Lowestoft on 3 June 1893, a son of Charles Pendle and Ellen Sarah Bloomfield. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 21 June 1893 and his family lived at 2 Saint George’s Terrace, Beccles Road, and this was still their home in 1901. By 1911 they were living at 29 Saint George’s Terrace and Frank was working as a fisherman. In 1939 Frank’s parents lived at 59 Gorleston Road, Oulton. 

In 1913 Frank was awarded his certificate of competency as a Second Hand.

A Sergeant with 217 Squadron, William died on 30th of September 1940 aged 21.

William was born at Wandsworth, London, on 19 August 1919, a son of William and Helen Alice Wake. He was baptised at Harrow Weald on 25 January 1920 and his family lived at The Cottage, Harrow Weald. In 1921 his family lived at ‘Simplicity’, Old Fort Road, Shoreham-by-Sea. William’s father died and in 1927 his mother married Selwyn Wollaston Humphrey of Oulton Broad Lowestoft.

A Seaman with H.M. Trawler Comet, Kenneth died on 30th of September 1940 aged 24.

Kenneth was born at Bramfield, Mutford, on 18 May 1916, a son of Henry George and Mabel Cross. In 1921 his family lived at Beccles Road, Mutford. By 1939 Kenneth's mother had died and his father still lived at Beccles Road, Mutford.

On 30 September 1940 the Comet sank after hitting a mine off Falmouth. Kenneth was among 15 crew who were killed.

Jack was born at Kessingland on 12 September 1916, a son of Isaac John and Edith Annie Catchpole. He was baptised at Saint Edmund's Church, Kessingland, on 15 October 1916, and his family lived at 4 Belvidere, Kessingland Beach. By 1939 his family were living at 6 The Ridge, Kessingland, and Jack worked as a fisherman (weekly articles)

On 30 September 1940 the Comet sank after hitting a mine off Falmouth. Jack was among 15 crew who were killed.

A Sergeant with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, Bernard died on 8th of September 1941 aged 20.

Bernard was born at Lowestoft on 11 March 1921, a son of Percival Walter and Eliza A. E. Robbens. In 1939 his family lived at 29 Beresford Road, Lowestoft.

Bernard served with Bomber Command and was based at Driffield, Yorkshire. He was a Wireless Operator/Air Gunner. In August 1941 Bernard was serving with 104 Squadron and was one of the crew of Wellington W5477. The Aircraft Accidents in Yorkshire gives the following account:

A Chief Officer with S. S. Cortes, Jack died on 26th of September 1941 at the age of 31. 

Jack was born at Brighton on 25 July 1909, a son of Vernon John Henry and Ellen Mary Ann Bosdet. His family had a home at 15 Carlton Mansions, Holmfield Road, London, and later lived at Oulton Broad. Jack's father was a Lieutenant Commander in the Royal Naval Reserve. 

Jack began his career in the Merchant Navy in 1924 as an apprentice/cadet.

Jack joined the S. S. Cortes on 3 February 1941 and was killed when the Cortes was sunk by enemy action.

A Private with the 5th Battalion, Robert died on 4th of September 1942 aged 33.

Robert was born at Kirkley on 6 July 1909, a son of Robert John and Ellen Cross. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Kirkley, on 9 July 1909, and his family lived at 1 Ivory Terrace, Colville Road. In 1911 his family lived at 31 Lawson Road. Robert became a pupil at Lovewell School on 20 April 1914. In 1921 Robert’s family lived at 7 Frances Terrace, and by 1939 Robert’s they were living at 55 Long Road, and Robert was a general labourer.

A Cook with S.S. Laconia (Liverpool), Herbert died on 12th of September 1942 at the age of 39. 

Herbert was born at Carlton Colville on 20 November 1902, a son of Herbert Wallace and Eliza Greengrass. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Carlton Colville, on 22 February 1903. In 1911 his family lived at Hall Cottages, Cley Road, Holt, Norfolk, and by 1918 at 36 Kimberley Road, Lowestoft.

On 10 January 1935 Herbert married Rosie Hettie Gertie Meadows. Herbert was a cook and they both lived at Kirkley. In 1939 their home was at 33 Saint John’s Road, Lowestoft. 

Died:

A Corporal with 8 Squadron, William died on 24th of September 1942 at the age of 22. 

William was born at Lowestoft on 12 July 1920, a son of William and Alice Eliza Hart of Lowestoft Suffolk England. Throughout William’s life his family lived at 17 Park Road. 

William served with No 8 Squadron, based at Khormaksar, Aden. The role of 8 Squadron was to fly bombing missions against the Italian forces in Eritrea and Somaliland.

An Ordinary Seaman with H.M.S. Veteran, Jeffrey died on 26th of September 1942 aged 21. 

Jeffrey was born at Hornsey, London, on 5 December 1920, a son of Joseph Percy and Ella (Emma) Amelia Filby. In 1921 his family lived at 73 Park Ridings, Wood Green, London. By 1939 they were living at 15 Uplands Road, East Barnet, and Jeffrey worked as a clerk in the 'film trade'. Later his parents moved to Lowestoft.

A Musician with H.M.S. Exeter, Douglas died on 6th of September 1943 at the age of 20. 

Douglas was born at Lowestoft on 10 December 1922, a son of John Charles and Anne Wilkin. He was baptised at Saint John's Church and his family lived at 9 Tonning Street. Later his family lived at 50 Raglan Street and then at 15 Bevan Street. 

Douglas was serving on H.M.S. Exeter when the ship was sunk during the Second Battle of the Java Sea on 1 March 1942. Most of the crew, including Douglas, were taken prisoner by the Japanese.

A Fusilier with 9th Bn., Harold died on 9th of September 1943 at the age of 29. 

Harold was born at Carlton Colville on 22 March 1914, a son of William and Rose Culham. He was baptised at Saint Peter's Church, Carlton Colville, on 26 April 1914, and his family lived at Sycamore Avenue, Oulton. In 1921 his family lived at 32 Sycamore Avenue, Oulton. 

Alan Jack Sturman

A Lance Corporal with the 4th Battalion, Alan died on 12th of September 1943 aged 26. 

Alan was born at Oulton on 11 July 1917, a son of John R. and Mary Ann Sturman. In 1921 his family lived at Mill Road Mutford, and this was still their address in 1939 when Alan worked as a grocer’s assistant. In early 1941 Alan married Joan Olive Elsey, this was registered in the Wainford district. Joan lived at Hulver and remarried in 1946.

A Guardsman with 6th Bn., John died on 21st of September 1943 at the age of 21. 

John was born at Lowestoft on 19 January 1922, a son of Allen Edwin and Edith May Moore of Lowestoft Suffolk. In 1939 his family lived at 97 Cambridge Road, Lowestoft, and John was a draper's shop assistant.

A Private with the 4th Battalion, Cyril died on 21st of September 1943 aged 25. 

Cyril was born at Lowestoft on 2 December 1917, a son Florence Jane Muskett. In 1919 Cyril’s mother married Archibald Cecil Brown. In 1921 his family lived at 3 Princes Road. By 1939 his family were living at 24 Fir Lane and Cyril was an omnibus chair maker. When he enlisted, he stated that he was a carpenter. Cyril married Vera Grace Lee in 1940, this was registered in the Lothingland district. Vera lived at 22 Fir Lane. Vera remarried in 1947.

A Seaman with H.M. Drifter Ocean Retriever. Charles died on 22nd of September 1943 at the age of 39. 

Charles was born at Mutford on 10 February 1904, a son of Alfred and Louisa Raven. In 1911 his family lived at Beccles Road, Mutford. In 1921 Charles lived at Beccles Road with his widowed mother and he was an unemployed shipyard worker. 

In 1929 Charles married Ethel May Rivett at Mutford. In 1939 they were living at Tunns Cottages, Rushmere, Suffolk, and Charles worked as a drift-net fisherman.

A Chief Skipper with H.M. Drifter Ocean Retriever, William died on 22nd of September 1943 at the age of 50. 

William was born at Lowestoft on 17 March 1893, a son of Edmund Thomas Capps and Laura Capps. He was baptised at Christchurch, Lowestoft, on 17 May 1893 and his family lived at Anguish Street.  In 1901 his family lived at 4 Wilde Street. By 1911 his family were living at 102 Saint Margaret's Road. 

In 1914 William was awarded his certificate of competency as a Skipper.

A Leading Seaman with H.M. Motor Minesweeper 70. Charles died on 24th of September 1943 at the age of 33.

Charles was born at Lowestoft on 11 February 1911, a son of Richard and Alice Pearce. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 3 March 1911 and his family lived at 4 Lincoln's Buildings, Whapload Road. By 1921 his family were living at 21 Dove Street and Charles attended the Central School. 

In late 1939 Charles married Marjorie Irene Moxey who lived at 44 Trafalgar Street, Lowestoft.

A Gunner with 67 Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Frederick died on 6 September 1944 at the age of 23. 

Frederick was born at Lowestoft on 19 June 1921, a son of Henry James and Emma Jane Cooke. In 1921 his family lived at 185 Clapham Road, and this was still their home in 1939 when Frederick worked and a wood machinist’s assistant, possibly at the same saw mill as his father.

Died:

A Trooper with the 48th Regiment, Henry died on 6th September 1944 aged 35. 

Henry was born at Corton on 7 January 1908, a son of Charles and Nellie Jane Browne. In 1911 his family lived at Bullock Fare Yard, Harleston. Henry’s father died in 1914 and in 1921 Henry. And his mother and siblings, were living with his grandparents, Henry and Jane Smith, at 63 Oxford Road, Lowestoft.  

Died:

A Lance Corporal with the 6th Battalion, Jack died on 10th of September 1944 aged 21. 

Jack was born at Carlton Colville on 7 November 1922, a son of Harry Stanley and Constance Mary Newson. In 1939 his family lived at Grove Farm, Grove Road, Carlton Colville, and Jack was a farmer and market grower assisting his father at their farm. 

Died:

A Private with the 4th Battalion, Ronald died on 12th of September 1944 aged 25.

Ronald was born at Lowestoft on 23 August 1919, a son of Philip Clarence and Eva Durrant. In 1921 his family lived at 14 Tonning Street and by 1939 their home was at 41 Tonning Street and Ronald was a printing compositor.

Died:

A Marine with the Siege Regiment, Arthur died on 13th of September 1944 at the age of 34. 

Arthur was born at Lowestoft on 7 July 1910, a son of Robert Charles and Esther Sarah Grimble. Arthur was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 2 August 1910 and his family lived at 5 Water Lane and this was still their home in 1911. By 14 July 1914 Arthur's family were living at Flora Terrace, Flora Road, Pakefield, and from this date Arthur attended Pakefield Council/Junior School.

Arthur's father died in 1918 while serving with the Army Service Corps.

Roger Bunn
Died:

A Lieutenant, Roger died on 20th September 1944 at the age of 32. 

Son of Thomas George and Ellen Bunn of 2 Elm Tree Rd. Carlton Colville Lowestoft Suffolk. Husband of Winifred Bunn of 4 Mill Hill Haverhill.

Roger was awarded the Military Medal (London Gazette 13 August 1943) for the Middle East. He was a Sergeant, number 406593, at the time. He was also mentioned in despatches (London Gazette 13 January 1944). 

Died:

A Private with the 2nd Battalion, David died on 21st of September 1944 aged 38. 

David was born at Chalfield, Suffolk, on 11 May 1906, a son of John William and Maud Roper. In 1911 his family lived at The Street, North Cove, Suffolk, and by 1921 they were living at 35 Pudding Moor, Beccles, and David worked for H.G. Rose, Corn and Coal Merchants, at Beccles, doing odd-jobs.  

Died:

A Private with the 4th Battalion, Henry died on 21st of September 1944 aged 31.

Henry was born at Lowestoft on 30 May 1913, a son of George Henry James and Lily Maud Sturley. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 10 July 1913 and his family lived at 2 Excelsior Cottages, Oulton Road. In 1921 their home was at 222 Raglan Street, and this was their home in 1939 when Henry was a saw mill labourer. By 1944 his family were living at 1 Riverside Road.

REEVE George William
Died:

A Lance Sergeant with 25th Bomb Disposal Company, George died on 22nd of September 1944 aged 29. 

George was born at Lowestoft on 9 January 1915, a son of John Henry and Emily Reeve. In 1921 his family lived at 17 Coronation Terrace, Fir Lane. 

Died:

A Flight Sergeant with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, Stanley died on 23rd September 1944 at the age of 20.

Stanley was born at Lowestoft on 20 October 1922, a son of William and Nellie Norah Skippen. In 1939 his family lived at 2 Osborne Street. By 1946 Samuel’s parents were living at Tile House, Mancetter Road, Atherstone, Warwickshire. 

Stanley enlisted in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve after June 1941. By September 1944 Stanley was a Pilot with 252 Squadron based at Gambut, Libya.

Died:

A Private with the Royal Army Medical Corps, Sydney died on 25th of September 1944 at the age of 26. 

Sydney was a son of John Frederick and Elizabeth Blanche Gillings of The Street, Blundeston. Sydney had worked as a gardener before he joined the Army. 

Sydney was a medic and he was attached to the 2nd Battalion Gordon Highlanders. 

Died:

A Private with the 10th Battalion, James died on 30th of September 1944 aged 24. 

James was born at Brampton, Cumberland, in 1920, a son of John Joseph and Agnes Mark. In 1939 his family lived at High Boothby, Brampton.

In 1943 James married Barbara Doreen Capps, of 27 Jacob's Street, at Lowestoft. Barbara remarried in 1962. 
James enlisted in the Border Regiment and was later transferred to the 10th Battalion Highland Light Infantry. The 10th Battalion landed at Normandy on 18 June 1944. 

Died:

A Flight Sergeant with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, Delbert died on 18th of September 1945 aged 20. 

Delbert was born at Lowestoft in 1924, a son of George Frederick and Gladys Turner. In 1939 his family lived at 33 Edinburgh Road. 

Delbert enlisted in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve after October 1942. By September 1945 Delbert was a Flight Engineer serving with 466 (Royal Australian Air Force) Squadron, based at Bassingbourn, Cambridgeshire. 

Died:

A Sergeant with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, Richard died on 26th of September 1945 at the age of 25.

Son of Hylton Charles and Agnes Harriet Ellis of 74 Sycamore Avenue Lowestoft. Richard's brother Hylton also served with the air force and died in 1940. Richard married his brother's widow Alice.

Richard enlisted in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve after October 1941. He was a Pilot and in September 1945 was serving with 33 Squadron, based at Sylt, Germany. 

Died:

A Private with the 5th Battalion, Ivor died on 29th of September 1945 aged 29.

John was born at Gisleham on 3 August 1916, a son of Frederick William and Rosa Jane Durrant. In 1921 his family lived at Black Street, Gisleham. Later his family lived at 3 Mill Villa, Gisleham.

Ivor worked as a general labourer before enlisting in the Royal Norfolk Regiment. 

Died:

A Gunner II with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, Roy died on 24th of September 1947 aged 22. 

Roy was born at Lowestoft in 1924, a son of Osgood Robert and Bella Trundle. His family lived at 50 Stanford Street and subsequently moved to 49 London Road South.

Roy joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve after October 1942. By September 1947 he was an Air Gunner serving with 97 Squadron.
