William joined the Royal Naval Reserve on 2 February 1894. William was awarded the Royal Naval Reserve Long Service Medal in 1910.

William had been working as an errand boy when he joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 20 January 1914. He was advanced to Boy 1st Class on 4 September 1914. William joined H.M.S. Clan McNaughton on 11 December 1914.
A Deck Hand with H.M. Drifter John Mitchell, Charles died on 8th of February 1915 at the age of 16.
Charles was born at Oulton Broad on 1 May 1898, a son of George and Jane Turrell. In 1901 his family lived at 33 Victoria Road, Carlton Colville. By 1911 they were living at 3 Lavinia Terrace, Commodore Road, Oulton Broad, and later their address was 112 Commodore Road.
Charles joined the Royal Naval Reserve on 6 February 1915 and served on the drifter John Mitchell.

Sidney enlisted at Lowestoft and joined the Suffolk Regiment. He did not serve overseas.
Sidney died from measles at Shorncliffe Military Hospital.

Victor was born at Mitcham, Surrey, in 1889, a son of Richard and Lydia M. Abrehart. In 1891 his family lived at Kent Terrcae, Mitcham. By 1910 they were living at 25 Leighton Street East, Croydon.
On 21 December 1910 Victor married Rose Emma Worledge at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft. Victor was working as a fisherman living at 33 Beresford Road, and Rose lived at 26 White Horse Street. By 1911 they were living at 5 Wesley Street, Lowestoft.
A Stoker with H.M.S. Hindustan, Charles died on 3rd of February 1916 at the age of 20.
Charles was born at Spexhall, Suffolk, on 17 April 1895, a son of Samuel and Martha Brighton. In 1901 his family lived ‘near the school’ at Spexhall. In 1911 his family lived at Beccles Road, Barnby, and Charles was a fisherman.

Stanley was born at Lowestoft in 1894, a son of Albert and Ida Disney. In 1901 his family lived at 49 Haward Street. This was still their home in 1911 and Stanley worked as a cooper. Later his parents lived at 11 Avondale Road and then at 80 Lorne Park Road.
Stanley enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft in 1912. He joined the Suffolk Regiment and served with E Company (Lowestoft) of the 1/4th Battalion. He was a signaller.

Albert joined the Royal Naval Reserve on 11 January 1915 and joined the crew of the Drifter Persistive.

David was born at Middleton, Suffolk, on 27 July 1858, a son of David and Susan Church (but note his Royal Naval Reserve service sheet gives his mother's name as Elizabeth). He was baptised at Saint Peter's Church, Westleton, on 9 May 1858. David's father died in 1870 and during the 1870s David began working at sea.
In 1883 David married Elizabeth Vale (some sources give her first names as Hannah Elizabeth).
A Signal Boy with H.M. Drifter Persistive, Harry died on 9th of February 1916 at the age of 16.
Harry was born at Kirkley on 30th March 1899, a son of Arthur Oswald and Margaret Emily Whatling. Note that his given names were John Harry, but he often used Harry as his first name, including when he served in the Royal Naval Reserve. Harry was baptised at Saint Peter's Church, Kirkley, on 28 April 1899.

John was born at Corton on 3 September 1878, a son of Charles and Elizabeth Rodwell. He was baptised at Saint Michael's Church, Oulton, on 2 August 1880. Kenneth was educated at Tollington School, Muswell Hill, London, and subsequently became an Analytical and Metallurgical Chemist.
A Skipper with Sailing Trawler Guide (Lowestoft), Frederick died on 23rd of February 1916 at the age of 56.
Frederick was born at Covehithe in 1859, a son of Robert and Elizabeth (Betsey) Blowers. He was baptised at Saint Michael's Church, Benacre, on 13 March 1859. In 1861 his family lived at Covehithe. By 1871 Frederick's father had died and his mother remarried and the family still lived at Covehithe.
A Second Hand, George died on 23rd February 1916 at the age of 16.
George was born at Lowestoft, a son of George Edward and Mary Shiplee.
In 1901 his family lived at 6 Fir Lane, Lowestoft, and by 1911 at 5 Sterry's Cottages, London Road, Pakefield.
Eventually his mother lived at 2 The Prairie, Lowestoft, before moving to Beccles and then Welling, Kent.
George's brother Gordon served in the Royal Naval Reserve, on H.M.S. Majestic, and died of wounds in 1915

George was born at Wenhaston in 1862, a son of Henry and Mary Ann Aldred. He was baptised at Wenhaston on 9 March 1862. In 1871 his family lived at (56) Blackheath, Wenhaston.
By 1880 George was a fisherman. In 1881 he worked on the Lowestoft trawler Mary Louisa, and in 1881 on the trawler Unity.
Formerly a Private with the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry, George died on 24th of February 1916 at the age of 33.
George was born at Lowestoft in 1883. He was a son of George and Harriet Barnes. At various times his family lived at Raglan Street and Chapel Street.

Sidney was born at Norwich in 1896, a son of Benjamin and Ruth Edith Fox. In 1901 his family lived at 22 Geoffrey Road, Old Lakenham, Norwich. By 1911 they were living at 28 Beaconsfield Road, Lowestoft, and Sidney was a telegraph messenger.
Sidney volunteered and enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft. He joined the Suffolk Regiment, service number 18740, and was posted to the 7th Battalion, arriving in France on 4 October 1915.

Ernest was born at Blundeston in 1886, a son of David and Harriet Pearson. In 1891 his family lived at High Street, Blundeston, and by 1901 at Lound Road, Blundeston. In 1911 they were still living at Lound Road and Ernest was a milkman on a farm.
Ernest enlisted in the Army at Bury St. Edmunds. He joined the Bedfordshire Regiment, service number 33226. He was posted to France and joined the 8th Battalion.

Thomas was born at Cardiff on 31 October 1882, a son of Thomas James and Mary Dickens. In 1891 his family lived at 16 Constellation Road, Raoth, Cardiff, and by 1901 they were living at 14 Walkers Road, Roath, and Thomas was a chemist’s assistant.
In 1911 Thomas lived with his sister, Mable Job, and family at 57 Waterloo Road, Hakin, Milford Haven, and he worked as an engineer at sea.

By 1901 they were living at 130 Beaconsfield Road, and this was still their home in 1911 when James worked as a plumber. Later his mother lived at 41 Salisbury Road, before moving to Hayle, Cornwall.

Denzil was born at Filey, Yorkshire, on 21 February 1894, a son of Charles Mitford Heriz-Smith and Marion Heriz-Smith. In 1901 his family lived at The Bungalows, Pot Kilns, Great Cornard, Suffolk. In 1911 his family lived at 31 Bushmead Avenue, Bedford. Later they lived at Four Winds, Kessingland Beach, Lowestoft.

Alfred was born at Lowestoft on 13 June 1889, a son of Alfred and Sarah Ann Youngs. In 1891 his family lived at 32 Bevan Street, Lowestoft. By 1897 they were living at 39 Clemence Street. Alfred attended the Wesleyan School until 30 August 1897 when he became a pupil at Saint John's School. In 1901 they were still living at 39 Clemence Street, but, by 1911, they had moved to 16 Avondale Road and Alfred was a labourer at the fish market. Later his parents lived at 38 Kirkley Run, South Lowestoft.

Edward was born at Wangford in on 31 October 1877, a son of and Emily Garrod. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Wangford, on 24 March 1877. In 1881 Edward lived with his maternal grandparents, William and Johanna Garrod, at Wangford Hill, Wangford. By 1891 his family lived at Bishops Buildings, Mariners Street, Lowestoft, and Edward was a rope twine spinner.

William was born at Lowestoft on 16 June 1893, a son of John and Mary Ann Newrick. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 4 July 1893, and his family lived at 15 Saint Margaret’s Plain. By 1901 his family were living at Potts Cottages, Oulton Road, and by 1911 at 3 College Cottages, Oulton Road, and William worked as a domestic gardener.

Later his parents lived at 18 Wellington Road, Pakefield, Lowestoft.
A Lance Corporal with the 1st Battalion, Thomas died on 25th of February 1917 at the age of 38.
Thomas was born at Bungay in 1879, a son of George and Catherine (Kate) Clarke. In 1891 his family lived at Saint Mary’s Terrace, Flixton Road, Bungay. By 1900 they were living at 3 Windsor Terrace, Bungay, and Thomas worked as a labourer.

Herbert was born at Gillingham, near Beccles, on 12 June 1893, a son of Herbert James and Emma Charlotte Roe. He was baptised at Gillingham on 17 September 1893. By 1901 his family were living at Gate House, Marsh Lane, Carlton Colville. This was still their address in 1911 when Herbert worked as a bullock tender on a farm. Later his parents lived at 118 Old Palace Road, Norwich.

Edward was born at Blundeston in 1896, a son of William and Mary Ann Church. In 1901 his family lived ‘near Crossways’, Blundeston. In 1911 they lived at Hall Lane, Lowestoft, and Edward was a farm labourer. By 1914 his family lived at Meadow Cottage, Oulton, and later his parents lived at Church Farm, Oulton Road Lowestoft.
Edward enlisted in the Army at Ipswich. He joined the Suffolk Regiment, service number 2452, and was posted to the 1/4th Battalion in France.

A Master with S. S. Mexico City, Charles died on 5th of February 1918 at the age of 53.
Charles was born at Lowestoft in 1864, a son of Jewett David and Fanny Elizabeth Emms. He was privately baptised by the Vicar of Saint John’s Church on 14 March 1864, and his family lived at Commercial Road. In 1871 the family lived at 3 Commercial Road where Charles’ father had a bakery and grocer’s shop. After his father’s death his family lived at Cyprus House, 11 London Road, and in 1911 he had relatives lived at 34 Marine Parade.

Ivan was born at Lowestoft on 7 July 1898 a son of John Herbert and Mahala Florence Mummery. In 1901 his family lived at 6 Battery Green Road. Ivan attended Morton Road School before becoming a pupil at Lowestoft School of Science on 14 September 1910. By 1910 his family were living at 25 Kirkley Park Road. Ivan, and all of his brothers and sisters, was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Kirkley, on 11 November 1911.

Daniel was born at Wrentham, a son of Daniel and Caroline Thacker. When he joined the Royal Naval Reserve George’s date of birth was recorded as 18 November 1872, but his birth was not registered until 1873. In 1881 his family lived at Church Road, Wrentham. By 1894 they were living at Lowestoft. In 1901 the family home was at Carlton Road and in 1911 they lived at Eddystone Villa, Kirkley Run.

James was born at Hulver on 13 April 1883, a son of Robert and Amy Muttitt. He was baptised at Saint Mary’s Church, Henstead, on 11 November 1883. In 1891 his family lived at Toad Row, Henstead, and this was still their address in 1901 and 1911.

In 1909 Montague married Florence Miriam Hurren who came from Chediston. By 1912 their home was at 4 Sunshine Terrace, Oulton Broad, and Montague worked as an engineer. Later Florence lived at Walnut Tree Farm, Walpole, Halesworth.

George was born at Pakefield on 23 January 1895, a son of William and Emma Thompson. He was baptised at All Saints’ Church, Pakefield, on 10 March 1895. In 1901 his family lived at 8 Prospect Place, Pakefield. From 3 June 1901 George was a pupil at Cunningham School. By 1911 his family were living at 1 Beach Street, Pakefield.

Percy was born at Lowestoft on 21 June 1887, a son of George Henry Brooke and Eliza Smith. (In the 1891 Census Percy is listed as living at 207 Clapham Road, with George and Eliza Smith, but Percy is noted as being a visitor and his surname is given as Brookes). Percy attended Clapham Road School and from 26 February 1892 was a pupil at Saint Margaret's School: at the time his family lived at Clapham Road.

John was at Cardiff when he joined the Royal Naval Reserve on 2 November 1916. During the war he served with the 'Longset' and 'Shikari II'.

George was born at Oulton Broad on 9 November 1904, a son of George James and Ada Hannah Catchpole. He was baptised at Saint Mark’s Church, Oulton Broad, on 26 March 1905, and his family lived at Sycamore Estate. The 1911 Census shows George with his maternal grandparents, Robert and Hannah Wilson, at Beccles Road, Oulton Broad. By 1939 George’s parents were living at 83 Victoria Road.

Olley was born at Kirkley on 12 November 1909, a son of Alfred and Harriet Ann Turrell. In 1911 his family lived at 1 Wheatacre Terrace, London Road South. By 1921 his family were living at 27 Clapham Road.
On 2 January 1937 Olley married Ruth Priscilla Woods at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft. Both Olley and Ruth were living at 56 Sussex Road. Olley was a fisherman and Ruth a factory worker. By 1939 their home was at 3 Ashley Downs, Lowestoft.
A Wren with H.M.S. Europa, Esme died on 18th of February 1940 at the age of 19.
Esme was born at Marlborough, Wiltshire, on 8 Jun 1920, a daughter of Samuel and Sarah Fowler. She was baptised at the Methodist Church, Marlborough, on 11 July 1920, and her family lived at Bristol House, High Street, Marlborough.
In 1939 her family lived at 68 High Street and Esme worked as a short-hand typist. Later her parents lived at 128 Bridge Road, Oulton Broad.

Roy was born at Lowestoft on 26 January 1924, a son of Nelson and Emilie Nunn. Throughout Roy’s life his family lived at 4 Riverside Road.
Roy was still undergoing training at H.M.S. Ganges when he died. He died at the Royal Navy Sick Quarters, Shotley, from acute rheumatic carditis and bilateral lobar pneumonia.

On 21 May 1932 William married Ivy Elsie Barnard at Saint Margaret's Church. William and Ivy were both living at 28 Essex Road. William worked as a fisherman and Ivy as a domestic.

By 1911 they were living at 14 Rotterdam Road. Walter became a labourer with the Great Eastern Railway and worked at Lowestoft September 1916.

Jacob was born at Lowestoft on 11 June 1882, a son of John and Mary Ann Moore. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 6 August 1882. In 1891 his family lived at 15 Wollaston Road, Lowestoft, and this was till their address in 1901 when Jacob worked as a blacksmith. By 1911 Jacob's father had died and his family lived at 56 Haward Street. At this time Jacob worked as a blacksmith's striker for the Great Eastern Railway Company.

Charles was born at Lowestoft on 2 March 1883, a son of William and Phoebe Lydia Drake. He was baptised at Oulton on 22 April 1883. The 1891 Census shows Charles with his grandparents at 9 Cambridge Road, and he was still living with them at that address in 1901 when he worked as a house painter. In 1911 Charles lived with his parents at 8 Stevens Street and he worked as a blacksmith's striker.

William was born at Lowestoft on 28 June 1877, a son of Samuel Smith. William worked as a fisherman.

In 1891 they lived at 48 Mariners Street and by 1898 their home was at 30 Factory Street.

On 16 February 1941 Leslie was at Jewsons Yard, Belvedere Road, when an air raid took place and Leslie was killed.

Arthur was born at Henstead, Suffolk, on 7 July 1921, a son of Benjamin Philip and Bessie Mabel Newrick. He was baptised at Saint John’s Church, Lowestoft, on 12 August 1921 and his family lived at 4 Freemantle Road. By 1939 his family home was at 130 Kimberley Road. In 1941 Arthur lodged at 30 Margaret Street, Cardiff.
On 16 February 1941 the Naniwa was sunk by enemy aircraft and all five crew, including Arthur, were lost.

On 6 June 1898 Harriet married Arthur William Wesson at Christ Church, Lowestoft. Harriet was living at Whapload Road and Arthur, a clerk, lived at 12 Fleetwood Street, Stoke Newington. In 1901 they lived at 15 York Gardens, Ilford, and in 1911 their home was at 101 York Road, Ilford, and this was still their home in 1939.

Initially Stanley served with the Royal Army Medical Corps, as indicated by his army service number. At some point he was posted/transferred to the Suffolk Regiment and served with the 4th Battalion.

Arthur was serving on the anti-submarine trawler, off the Canary Islands, when it was sunk by a torpedo from submarine U-521. Forty-three of the crew, including Arthur, were killed.

Ernest was born at Walthamstow on 20 April 1910, a son of Charles T. and Anna Maude Kemp. In 1911 his family lived at Finningham, Suffolk. By 1921 they were living at Blo Norton, Norfolk.

At some point Dorothy moved to Lowestoft. She remarried in 1946 and continued to live in the Lowestoft area.

On 24 February 1945 the S.S. Oriskany was part of convoy BTC-18. The ship was torpedoed and sank, about five miles west of Lands End. There were no survivors.
Frank's father died in 1945 and, at some point, his mother lived in Lowestoft, Suffolk.
