A Private with the 15th Hussars. Reginald died on 1st of November 1914 at the age of 28. 

Reginald was born at Little Chishall, Essex, in 1886, a son of Joseph and Sarah Pegram. By 1891 his family were living at High Street, Great Chishall, Royston, and by 1901 at Barley Road, Great Chishall. 

In 1901 Frederick was an apprentice French polisher and living with his great-aunt, Harriet Pegram, at Barkway Street, Royston. He was apprenticed at Messrs. Abbott & Son, Royston.

A Fisherman with the drifter 'Will and Maggie', Wilfred died on 3 November 1914 at the age of 17.

Wilfred was born at Carlton Colville in 1897, a son of George Alfred and Elizabeth Abigail Gower. In 1901 his family lived at 21 Victoria Road, Carlton Colville. By 1914 they had a home at Beccles Road, Carlton Colville.

A Skipper with the drifter 'Will and Maggie', George died on 3 November 1914 at the age of 39. 

George was born at Flixton, near Lowestoft, in 1875, a son of Isaac and Mary Ann Gower. In 1881 his family lived at Gisleham. By 1891 they were living at 83 Albert Road, Great Yarmouth, and George worked as a labourer.

On 28 December 1896 George married Elizabeth Abigail Mobbs at Saint Peter's Church, Carlton Colville. They both lived at Carlton Colville and George was a fisherman. In 1901 they lived at 21 Victoria Road, Carlton Colville.

A Fisherman with Drifter Will and Maggie (Lowestoft), Frank died on 3rd of November 1914 at the age of 17. 

Frank was born at Carlton Colville in 1897, a son of George and Griselda Newrick. Frank was baptised at Saint Peter's Church, Carlton Colville, on 12 September 1897. In 1901 his family lived at 25 South Elmham Terrace. In 1911 Frank lived with his sister, Emma Fisher, at South Elmham Terrace.

James was born at Lowestoft in 1868. In 1871 he lived with his grandmother, Harriet Cooper, at Crowe's Buildings, 2 Eastern Square, Lowestoft, and in 1881, he was still living with his grandparents, at Crowe's Buildings.

Harry was born at Kirkley in 1866, a son of William and Emily Flowers. In 1871 his family lived at 5 The Street, Kirkley. By 1881 they were living at Carlton Colville.

William was born at Kessingland in 1877 a son of George and Mary Ann Studd. In 1881 his family lived at The Street, Kessingland. By 1911 their home was at 4 Providence Place, London Road, Kessingland, and William worked as a fisherman.

A Deck Hand with Drifter Will and Maggie (Lowestoft). William died on 3rd of November 1914 at the age of 23.

William was born at Carlton Colville in 1891, a son of Horace and Elizabeth Ann Mower. He was baptised at Saint Peter's Church, Carlton Colville, on 25 October 1891. In 1901 his family lived at Morse's Cottages, Carlton Colville. In 1911 they lived at Crown Cottages, Carlton Colville, and William worked as a fisherman on a drifter.

A Private with 2/6th (Cyclist) Bn. Clifford died on 4th of November 1914 at the age of 23. 

Clifford was born at Lowestoft in 1891, a son of Edward John and Clara Wren (formerly Sandwell). He was baptised at Saint John's Church, Lowestoft, on 6 December 1891 and his family lived at Henry Street. By 1901 his family were living at 128 Denmark Road, Lowestoft, and this was still their home in 1911 when Clifford worked as a fish salesman's clerk. 

Alexander Timoney
Died:

A Private with 1st Battalion, Alexander died on 4th of November 1914 at the age of 18. 

Alexander was born on 11 April 1896, a son of Robert John and Ada Violet Gertrude Timoney. He was baptised at Saint Peter's Church, Kirkley, on 1 May 1896 and his family lived at 92 Saint Leonard's Road. By 1901 his family were living at 135 London Road and, subsequently, at 14 Halcyon Crescent Lowestoft.

A Private with 2nd Bn., William died on 4th of November 1914 at the age of 38. 

William was born at Fulham. His service details from the First World War suggest that he was born in 1876, but service papers from his first enlistment in the Army show that he was actually born on 9 January 1873. He was a son of Jemima Smith. 

Frank Arthur Hall
Died:

A Deck Hand with H.M. Trawler Mary. Frank died on 5th of November 1914 at the age of 29. 

Frank was born at Lowestoft on 19 February 1886, a son of George Edwin (Jimmie) and Jessie Hall. In 1891 his family lived at 11 Cumberland Road, Lowestoft. By 1901 his father had died and he lived at 4 Princes Road, as did his mother, and Frank was a cooper's apprentice.

A Cook with the trawler Speculator. Daniel died on 9th of November 1914 at the age of 41.

Daniel was born at Lowestoft in 1873, a son of William and Elizabeth Saunders. In 1881 his family lived at 27 Selby Street and, in 1891, at 8 Selby Street. 

In 1901 Daniel worked as a trawler fisherman and lived at 60 Stevens Street. By 1909 he was living at Edinburgh Road. In 1914 he lived at Southwell Road.

A Third Hand with the trawler Speculator. Henry died on 9 November 1914 at the age of 28.

Henry was born at Lowestoft on 27 May 1886, a son of Peter Forest Hunter and Harriett Elizabeth Hunter. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church on 3 October 1886.  In 1891 his family lived at 34 Cambridge Road.

William was born at Lowestoft on 2 November 1858, a son of John and Mary Ann Tuttle. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 5 December 1858. In 1861 his family lived at 9 Eastern Square, Lowestoft. By 1871 they were living at 34 Clemence Street.

A Mater with the Trawler Speculator. William died on 9th of November 1914 at the age of 62.

Born at Aldringham in 1852, a son of Thomas Norton and Jemima Easter. He was baptised at Aldringham on 8 August 1852. In 1861 his family lived at Aldringham cum Thorpe. In 1871 they lived at Aldringham and William was a mariner.

A Fourth Hand with Trawler Speculator. Charles died on 9th of November 1914 at the age of 30. 

Charles was born at Henstead on 21 April 1884, a son of Raca and Emma Gorrod. He was baptised at Saint Peter's Church, Kirkley, on 17 September 1886. In 1891 his family lived at 1 Southwell Road and later they lived at 16 Southwell Road, Lowestoft. 

On 24 December 1911 Charles married Susanna Charlotte Woods. Charles was a fisherman living at Southwell Road and Susanna lived at 25 Commercial Road. 

Frederick James Munnings
Died:

A Lance Corporal with the 2nd Battalion, Frederick died on 15th of November 1914 at the age of 34.

Frederick was born at Lowestoft in October 1880, a son of William David and Anna Maria Munnings. In 1881 his family lived at 37 Saint Peter's Street, Lowestoft. Frederick's father died and in 1884 his mother married George Smith. In 1891 his family lived at 111 Saint Peter's Street. 

Frederick attended Saint John's School and, from 4 May 1891, Saint Margaret's Boys School.

A Fisherman with Steam Drifter Lord Carnarvon (Lowestoft), John died on 19th of November 1914 at the age of 36. 

John was born at 1878, a son of Christopher James and Harriett Charlotte Fisk. He was baptised at Saint Peter's Church, Carlton Colville, on 26 May 1878. In 1881 his family lived near The Green, Carlton Colville. By 1891 they were living at Bell Corner, Carlton Colville, and John was an agricultural labourer.

A Fisherman with Steam Drifter Lord Carnarvon (Lowestoft), Amos died on 19th of November 1914 at the age of 43. 

Amos was born at Kessingland in 1871, a son of Samuel and Emma Catchpole. He was baptised at Saint Edmund's Church, Kessingland, on 28 January 1872. His family lived at Turnpike Road, Kessingland. In 1881 Amos lived with his grandparents at The Street, Kessingland. In 1891 he was still living with his grandparents, now at the High Street, Kessingland, and Amos was a fisherman.

A Skipper with Steam Drifter Lord Carnarvon (Lowestoft), Clifford died on 19th of November 1914 at the age of 35. 

Clifford was born at Mettingham, Bungay, Suffolk, in 1878, a son of Charles and Alice Bird. He was baptised at Mettingham on 3 November 1878. In 1881 his family lived at Low Road, Mettingham, and in 1891 they were still living at Low road and Clifford worked as an agricultural labourer.

A Mate with Steam Drifter Lord Carnarvon (Lowestoft), Albert died on 19th of November 1914 at the age of 32.

Albert was born at Thorpe, Norwich, on 9 December 1881, a son of Maria Utting. He was baptised at Saint Andrew's Church, Thorpe, on 7 September 1884. By 1890 his family were living at Beccles, and from 28 July 1890 Albert attended Geldeston School. In 1891 his family lived at The Street, Geldeston.

John was born at Hindringham, Norfolk, in 1877, a son of Susan Temple. In 1881 he lived with his grandmother, Susan Temple, at Lion Street, Hindringham. By 1891 he was living with his mother, Susan, at Walsingham Road, Hindringham, and John worked as a bricklayer's labourer.

A Fisherman with Steam Drifter Lord Carnarvon (Lowestoft). Alexander died on 19th of November 1914 at the age of 19. 

Alexander was born at Lowestoft in 1895, a son of William and Jane Grey. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 30 October 1895. Throughout his life Alexander's family lived at 70 Tennyson Road, Lowestoft.

A Fisherman with Steam Drifter Lord Carnarvon (Lowestoft), William died on 19th of November 1914 at the age of 43. 

William was born at Wenhaston, Suffolk, in 1870, a son of John and Lucy Finch. In 1871 his family lived at Blackheath, Wenhaston, and this was where they were living in 1881. 

In 1895 William married Elizabeth Noy at Wenhaston. By 1901 they were living at Back Street, Wenhaston, and William was a fisherman. In 1911 they lived at Back Street, Back Road, Wenhaston, and William was a fisherman on a steam drifter.

An Engineer with Steam Drifter Lord Carnarvon (Lowestoft), Doctor died on 19th of November 1914 at the age of 31. 

Doctor was born at Wenhaston in 1880, a son of Charles and Honor Spall. In 1881 his family lived at Black Heath, Wenhaston. By 1891 they were living at Friston. In 1901 they were living at Saint Clere Cottage, East Tilbury, and Doctor worked as an under-gardener domestic. By 1911 Doctor was working as a fisherman and he lodged at Bridge Road, Oulton Broad.

A Seaman with H.M.S. Pembroke, George died on 21st of November 1914 at the age of 20. 

George was born at Lowestoft on 22 November 1894, a son of William and Agnes Maud Herriven. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church on 21 December 1894 and his family lived at 7 Ipswich Road. In 1901 his family lived at 215 Clapham Road. By 1911 his father had died and the family had moved to 33 Jacob's Street. Later his mother remarried, Nash, and she lived at 93 Cambridge Road, Lowestoft.

An Able Seaman with H.M.S. Leda., Charles died on 3rd of November 1915 at the age of 19. 

Charles was born at Lowestoft on 19 April 1896, a son of John Francis and Florence May James. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 10 May 1896, and his family lived at 9 White Horse Street, Lowestoft. (1901) By 1911 Charles’ mother had died and his father lived at 12 White Horse Street, Lowestoft.

A Lance Corporal with 7th Bn., Frederick died on 4th of November 1915 at the age of 30. 

Frederick was born at Pakefield on 21 February 1885, a son of Henry William and Ellen Mullender. Frederick was baptised at All Saints’ Church, Pakefield, 10 May 1885. From 17 September 1888 Frederick attended Cunningham School. In 1891 his family lived at 2 Prospect Place, Pakefield. By 1901 they were living at Millers Lane, Pakefield, and Frederick was an apprentice house painter.

Walter Sidney Coleman
Died:

A Private with 7th Battalion, Walter died on 4th of November 1915 at the age of 21. 

Walter was born at Lowestoft on 9 May 1894, a son of George and Henrietta Coleman. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 30 May 1894, and his family lived at 61 Reeve Street, Lowestoft. By 1901 Walter’s mother had died and the family lived at 3 Sudbury Cottages, Bevan Street, Lowestoft. In 1911 his family lived at 71 Norwich Road, Lowestoft, and Walter was a stable boy working for the Great Eastern Railway (G.E.R.). Later his father lived at 8 Winnipeg Road, Lowestoft.

A Private with 2nd Divisional Supply Column, Marcus died on 6th of November 1915 at the age of 33. 

Marcus was born at Camberwell on 28 June 1882, a son of Marcus and Elizabeth Bardwell. He was baptised at Saint John the Divine Church, Kennington, on 13 September 1882, and his family lived at 82 Bishop’s Road, Lambeth. In 1891 his family lived at The School House, 1 Blo Norton Road, South Lopham, Norfolk: Marcus’ father was a schoolmaster. 

On 23 November 1897 Marcus joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class.

A Private with 7th Battalion, William died on 8th of November 1915 at the age of 26.

William was born at Pakefield on 25 April 1889, a son of Mary Ann Bridge. He was baptised at Saint John’s Church, Lowestoft, on 7 July 1889 and his family lived at 4 Bourne Terrace, Alexandra Road, Kirkley. In 1891 he lived with his grandparents, Henry and Harriet Bridge, at Bourne Terrace, 4 Alexandra Road. From 26 June 1893 William was a pupil at Cunningham School.

A Deck Hand with H.M. Drifter Supporter, Harold died on 18th of November 1915 at the age of 26. 

Harold was born at Kessingland on 26 July 1889, a son of Francis George and Selina Davis. He was baptised at Saint Edmund’s Church, Kessingland, on 24 November 1889. A note in the baptism register records that Harold ‘Drowned Dardanelles in the Great War.’ In 1891 his family lived at Beach Road, Kessingland, and this was still their address in 1901. By 1911 they were living at The Drive, Belvedere Place, Kessingland, and Harold was a fisherman.

A Deck Hand with H.M.S. Colleen. Francis died on 29th of November 1915 at the age of 23. 

Francis was born at Lowestoft on 28 August 1892, a son of Francis and Henrietta Morris. He was baptised at Christchurch, Lowestoft, on 14 September 1892, and his family lived at Canary Cottage, Whapload Road, Lowestoft. 

Francis’ father died in 1909 and the family were living at 176 Raglan Street, Lowestoft. By 1911 Francis’ father was living at 75 May Road, Lowestoft.

A Fourth Hand with Sailing Trawler True Vine (Lowestoft), Harry died on 30th of November 1915 at the age of 26.

Harry was born at Broome, Norfolk, on 1 April 1898, a son of Arthur and Harriet Lewell. In 1901 his family lived at Lugg Lane, Broome. From 20 November 1902 Harry attended Broome School. Before 1909 his family lived at Corton. From 16 April 1909 Harry was a pupil at Saint Margaret's School, Lowestoft, and his family lived at 10 Oulton Street, Lowestoft, and this was still their home in 1911.

A Skipper with Sailing Trawler True Vine (Lowestoft). Samuel died on 30th of November 1915 at the age of 37. 

Samuel was born at Lowestoft in 1878, a son of John and Martha Reeve. In 1881 his family lived at Seamans Road, Hopton. By 1891 Samuel's father had died and his mother had married Thomas Carsey and the family lived at Mill Lane, Corton.

A Mate with Sailing Trawler True Vine (Lowestoft), Harry died on 30th of November 1915 at the age of 26.

Harry, sometimes known as Henry, was born at Corton on 27 August 1889, a son of Thomas and Martha Carsey. In 1891 his family lived at Mill Lane, Corton. From 15 March 1898 Harry attended Saint Margaret's School, Lowestoft, and his family lived at 115 Wollaston Road, Lowestoft. In 1901 his family lived at 107 Saint Margaret's Road, Lowestoft. 

John Cecil Thurling
Died:

A Corporal with the 1/4th Battalion, John died on 1st of November 1916 at the age of 20. 

John was born at Lowestoft in 1897, a son of Stephen and Phoebe Thurling. His family lived at 2 Jacob’s Street and this was John’s home for all of his life. In 1911 he worked as an iron moulder’s labourer with a motor engineer.

Before the Forst World War he began working with the Great Eastern Railway at Lowestoft. He was, for a time, a labourer, and later an assistant horse-truck driver. 

Theophilus Norman Harper
Died:

A Private with the 1/4th Battalion, Theophilus died on 1st of November 1916 at the age of 20. 

Theophilus was born at Lowestoft in 1896, a son of Arthur and Hannah Harper. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 16 January 1896, and his family lived at 54 Whapload Road and this was still their home in 1901. By 1915 his family lived at 46 Whapload Road, and later at 11 Anguish Street, Lowestoft.

William James Hales
Died:

A Private with the 1/4th Battalion, William died on 2nd of November 1916 at the age of 19. 

William was born at Lowestoft in 1897, a son of George and Elizabeth Hales. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church 26 June 1898, and his family lived at 20 Haward Street. In 1901 his family lived at 4 Cumberland Square, and by 1911 at 18 Mariners St. Lowestoft.

A Trimmer with H.M. Trawler Glenprosen, Bertie died on 3rd of November 1916 at the age of 17. 

Bertie was born at Barsham, near Beccles, on 17 March 1899, a son of Samuel and Emma Eliza Stebbings. In 1901 his family lived at The Cottage, Roos Hall, Barsham. In 1911 his family lived at Oulton Street, Oulton. Later their home was at 8 Meadow Cottages, Oulton, Lowestoft. 

Bertie joined the Royal Naval Reserve on 14 July 1915, claiming to be two years older than he actually was. He served on the trawler Glenprosen.

Matthew William Coleman
Died:

A Second Hand with H.M. Trawler Cantatrice., Matthew died on 5th of November 1916 at the age of 28. 

Matthew was born at Lowestoft on 2 April 1888, a son of Ezer and Eliza Burwood Coleman. He was baptised at Christchurch, Lowestoft, on 25 April 1888, and his family lived at 27 Goldsmith's Buildings. By 1891 his family lived at 27 Spurgeon's Street, and in 1901 they lived at 5 Spurgeon's Score. 

Died:

A Flight Sub Lieutenant with Cranwell Naval Air Station, William died on 8th of November 1916 at the age of 19. 

William was born at London on 9 April 1897, a son of Joseph Fox Tarratt and Mary Georgina Helen McNeill (or Rogers) of Clarendon Lowestoft. 

Officially William's full name was William Stewart Tarratt Stewart of Coll. 

Frank William Jeffery
Died:

A Private with the 2nd Battalion, Frank died on 13th of November 1916 at the age of 28. 

Frank was born at Lowestoft in 1888, a son of Frederick Ernest and Alice Elizabeth Jeffery. In 1891 his family lived at 78 Saint Leonard’s Road, and this would be Frank’s home for the rest of his life. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Kirkley on 2 December 1891. Frank’s father died in 1894. In 1906 Frank’s mother married William Hargrave. In 1911 Frank worked as a barman at a licensed hotel.

A Private with 2nd Bn., William died on 13th of November 1916 at the age of 19. 

William was born at Lowestoft in 1897 a son of Arthur Nathaniel and Emma E. Balls. In 1901 his family lived at 29 Cambridge Road, Lowestoft, and by 1911 they were living at 70 Ipswich Road, Lowestoft. 

William enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft. He joined the Suffolk Regiment and served in France with the 2nd Battalion.

Died:

A Sergeant with the 2nd Battalion, George died on 13th of November 1916 at the age of 22. 

George was born at Stowupland, Suffolk, in 1894, a son of George Henry and Margaret Salter. He was baptised at Holy Trinity Church, Stowupland, on 11 March 1894. In 1901 his family lived at The Police Station, Stowupland. By 1911 his family were living at Diss and by 1915 their home was at 42 Beaconsfield Road,

A Sergeant with 24th Bn., Joe died on 13th of November 1916 at the age of 22. 

Joe was born at Banbury in 1894, a son of Harry John and Gertrude Hicks. In 1901 his family lived at 35 West Bar, Neithrop, Banbury. Later his parents lived at Hawthorn Cottage, Quorn, Loughborough. 

By 1911 Joe was a bank clerk living at 51 Station Road, Sudbury.

A Private with the 2nd Battalion, Herbert died on 13th of November 1916 at the age of 27. 

Herbert was born at Carlton Colville in 1888, a son of John and Elizabeth Honor Nunn. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Carlton Colville, on 28 November 1888. In 1891 his family lived at Bell Corner, Carlton Colville. By 1901 his father had died, and he lived with his mother, and grandparents Shadrack and Mary Sharman, near Low farm, Carlton Colville. He was the half-brother of Bertie Sharman of 1 Bridge Road, Oulton Broad.

A Private with the 2nd Battalion, Albert died on 13th of November 1916 at the age of 21. 

Albert was born at Lowestoft in 1895, a son of Harry and Mildred Christianna Proudfoot. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 16 August 1895 and his family lived at 57 Cambridge Road, and this was still the family home in 1911. Later his parents lived at 93 Oxford Road and then at 46 Marine Parade.

Percival Albert Norman
Died:

A Private with 4th Battalion, Percival died on 13th of November 1916 at the age of 29. 

Percival was born at Kirkley on 8 June 1887, a son of James and Margaret Norman. He was baptised at Christchurch, Lowestoft, on 21 November 1888 and his family lived at 59 Reeve Street. By 1901 his family were living at 10 Reeve Street.

Died:

A Private with 7th Bn., Charles died on 14th of November 1916 at the age of 19. 

Charles was born at Norwich on 15 February 1897, a son of Henry William (Harry) and Sarah (Sally) Fitt. He was baptised at Saint James with Pockthorpe Church, Norwich, on 25 March 1897 and his family lived at 20 Cavalry Street, Norwich. In 1901 his family lived at 173 Sprowston Road, Norwich. By 1911 they were living at 3 Eden Street, Lowestoft, and Charles was an apprentice upholsterer. Later his parents lived at Eden Villa, 2 Eden Street, Lowestoft.

A Private with the 2nd Battalion, Harry died on 15th of November 1916 at the age of 33.

Harry was born at Hardley, Norfolk, on 22 October 1883, a son of Harry and Esther Riches. He was baptised at Hardley on 25 November 1883. In 1891 his family lived at The Street, Hardley, and in 1901 they lived at Valley Farm, South Elmham, and Henry was a farm labourer. By 1911 they were living at Primrose Cottage, Carlton Colville, and Henry worked as a coal porter.

Frank was born at Carlton Colville on 3 June 1886, a son of Abraham and Anna Dyke. In 1891 his family lived at 9 Severn Terrace, Carlton Colville. Frank was baptised at Saint Peter's Church, Kirkley, on10 April 1900 and his family lived at 16 Severn Terrace, Kirkley Run. By 1901 they were living at Worcester Terrace, Carlton Colville, and Frank was a plasterer working for his father.

Henry was born at Oulton Broad in 1882, a son of Benjamin and Emma Godbold. He was baptised at Saint Michael’s Church, Oulton, on 5 February 1882. In 1881 his family lived at Mutford Bridge, Oulton Broad, and by 1891 at 42 Beccles Road, Oulton. In 1899 they lived at Saint Anne’s Terrace, Bridge Road, and by 1911 at 4 Rock Dene, Rock Estate, Oulton Broad.

Percy was born at Gisleham in 1884, a son of Jonah and Elizabeth Block. He was baptised at Saint Edmund's Church, Kessingland, on 30 August 1885. In 1891 his family lived at Church Road, Kessingland. By 1901 they were living at 5 Maud Terrace, Kessingland, and Percy was a laundry van driver.

William was born at Lowestoft on 22 February 1884, a son of George and Harriet Knights. He was baptised at Christchurch, Lowestoft, on 5 March 1884, and his family lived at Eastern Square. In 1891 his family lived at 6 Pakefield Street, and by 1901 at 2 Pakefield Street. In 1901 William was working as a fisherman.

Walter was born at Pakefield on 3 June 1889, a son of Arthur and Caroline Louisa Stone. In 1891 his family lived at the Prince of Wales publican house, London Road, where his father was the publican, and this was still their home in 1901. From 21 June 1892 Walter was a pupil at Cunninghams School. In 1902 Walter’s father died and his mother remarried. He gave his next of kin as his sister Hilda Stone of 128 Morton Road Lowestoft. 

Walter lived at 1 Prospect Place Lowestoft.

John  Annis

A Trimmer with H.M. Drifter Michaelmas Daisy, John died on 26th of November 1916 at the age of 42. 

John was born at Lowestoft on 6 September 1875, a son of James and Elizabeth Annis. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 7 April 1878. In 1881 his family lived at 1 Well Yard, Saint Peter’s Street, Lowestoft, and this was still their home in 1891 when John worked as a fisherman.

In 1891 George was the cook on the trawler Paragon. He was awarded his certificate of competency as a skipper on 23 April 1901.

In 1897 George married Sarah Louisa Fuller. In 1901 their home was at 2 Church Road, Pakefield. By 1911 they were living at 54 Church Road, Kirkley.

George was born at Lowestoft on 9 December 1880, a son of Robert and Johanna Knights. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 2 January 1881. In 1881 his family lived at 34 Crown Street. By 1891 they were living at 9 Strand Cottages, Anguish Street. Later they lived at 97 Wollaston Road.

Ernest was born at Lowestoft on 25 December 1896, a son of James William and Rachel Annie Simmons. In 1901 his family lived at 26 Rochester Road, Kirkley. By 1911 his mother had died and his family still lived at Rochester Road. By 1915 heir address was 17 Lorne Road and later his father lived at 69 Lorne Park Road.

During World War One Ernest’s father was a Skipper with the Dover Patrol.

William was born at Lowestoft on 28 March 1880, a son of William and Amelia Wright. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 6 June 1880. By 1881 his family were living at 2 Alice Cottages, Dove Street, Lowestoft. In 1891 their address was 3 Alice Cottages, Dove Street. In 1901 the family lived at 4 Clarence Road, Lowestoft, and William was a smacksman. By 1915 they were living at 11 Church Road, Lowestoft. Subsequently his parents lived at Lammas, Norfolk.

Richard was born at Wicklewood, Norfolk, on 1 July 1889, a son of Benjamin and Harriet Jermany. In 1891 his family lived at Low Street, Crownthorpe, Norfolk. Between 22 January 1894 and 23 April 1903 Richard attended Hardingham School. He left school to go into agricultural work. By 1901 the family were living at Denmark Green, Hardingham.

John was born at Oulton on 21 February 1879, a son of John and Phoebe Bessey. He was baptised at Saint Michael’s Church, Oulton on 30 March 1879. In 1881 his family lived at 16 South Elmham Terrace, Oulton Broad, and by 1901 at 94 Cambridge Road. In 1911 the family lived at 143 Saint Margaret's Road, and John was a drift net fisherman.

Colin Joseph Rowland
Died:

A Deck Hand with H.M. Drifter Pelagia, Joseph died on 28th of November 1916 at the age of 19. 

Colin was born at Rushmere on 24 June 1897, a son of Robert and Ellen Rowland. In 1901 his family lived at The Street, Rushmere. In 1911 they were still living at The Street, Rushmere, and Colin was a farm labourer. Later his mother lived at The Tuns Cottages, Rushmere.

Colin joined the Royal Naval Reserve on 5 October 1915. He served with the trawler Evening Primrose until 14 October 1915 when he joined the trawler Pelagia.

A Skipper with H.M. Drifter Pelagia, George died on 28th of November 1916 at the age of 39. 

George was born at Lowestoft on 13 November 1877, a son of John Thomas and Sarah Hitter. In 1881 his family lived at 5 West Raglan Street. George was baptised at Saint John’s Church, Lowestoft, on 13 June 1886. By 1891 they were living at 79 Bevan Street and George was the cook on a fishing smack. 

John Thomas Mills

John was born at Lowestoft on 14 July 1891, a son of Herbert William and Caroline Frances Mills. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, and his family lived at 34 Saint Margaret’s Road. John attended Church Road Board School and, from 1 February 1899, became a pupil at Saint Margaret’s School. In 1899 his family lived at 23 The Hemplands and by 1901 were living at 283 Raglan Street. In 1911 his family were still living at 283 Raglan Street and John was a drift net fisherman.

A Private with the 2nd Battalion, Alfred died on 28th of November 1916 at the age of 32. 

Alfred was born at Lowestoft on 27 January 1884, a son of Alfred and Elizabeth Johnson. Alfred attended Christchurch School until 31 August 1891, when he became a pupil at Saint Margaret’s School. In 1891 his family lived at 27 Duke’s Head Street, and this was still their home in 1901 when Alfred worked as a baker’s boy. In 1911 Alfred still lived at his family at 27 Duke’s Head Street, and he worked as a fish carter. 

George William Randlesome

A Commissioned Gunner with the Royal Indian Marine, George died on 30th of November 1916 at the age of 27.

George was born at Haddiscoe in 1889, a son Joseph James and Rose Randlesome. In 1891 his family lived 'by the Post Office', Haddiscoe, and by 1901 they were living at 70 Park Road, Rock Estate, Oulton. By 1911 his family lived at 70 Oxford Road Lowestoft.

A Private with 1/10th Bn., Alfred died on 2nd of November 1917 at the age of 24. 

Alfred was born at Lowestoft in 1893, a son of Charles and Elizabeth (Lily) Leech. In 1901 his family lived at 30 Edinburgh Road, Lowestoft, and by 1911 at 10 Osborne Street, Lowestoft, and Alfred worked as a clothier. 

Alfred was living at Stoke Newington when he enlisted in the Army at Hackney. He joined the 10th London Regiment, service number 4055. He was posted to the 1/10th Battalion and arrived in Egypt on 13 July 1916 to join the Battalion. 

Thomas John Brinded

A Private with 1/4th Bn., Thomas died on 2nd of November 1917 at the age of 38. 

Thomas was born at Mutford in 1879, a son of Thomas and Christina Brinded. In 1881 his family lived at Mutford and in 1887 they lived at Burlingham. Thomas' mother died in 1887 and his father married Mary A. Lubbock in 1889. In 1891 his family lived at Bakers Road, Halvergate, Norfolk. By 1901 his family were living at Farm House, Geldeston, and Thomas worked on the farm for his father.

A Gunner with 270th Brigade, Sidney died on 2nd of November 1917 at the age of 22. 

Sidney was born at Lowestoft in 1895, the only son of Charles Matthew and Emmeline Boyce. In 1901 his family lived at Norwich Road, Lowestoft, and by 1911 they were living at 13 Stanley Street and Sidney was an apprentice printing compositor.

A Bombardier with 169 Siege Battery, James died on 3rd of November 1917 at the age of 21. 

James was born at Great Yarmouth on 6 June 1896, a son of James William and Jessie Woolnough. He was baptised at Great Yarmouth on 30 June 1896. In 1901 his family lived at 2 New Wellinton Place, Great Yarmouth. In 1911 they lived at 52 Tyrolean Square, Cobholm, Great Yarmouth, and James worked as a butcher’s boy.  Later James lived with his cousin, Lawrence Chapman, at Pond Farm, Saint Olaves Road, Herringfleet.

A Private with the 1/4th Battalion, Francis died on 3rd of November 1917 at the age of 25.

Francis was born at Beccles in 1892, a son of George and Mary Holland. In 1901 his family lived at 1 Melbourne Terrace, Denmark Road, Beccles. Later his parents lived at 4 Rosemary Lane, Beccles. By 1911 Franceis was living with, and working as a market garden labourer for, Margaret Carey of Uralla House, Beccles. Later records show Margaret Carey as Francis’ foster-mother. By 1918 Margaret was living at Flowerlands, Lound Road, Blundeston.

A Deck Hand with H.M.S. Attentive III, Arthur died on 5th of November 1917 at the age of 33. 

Arthur was born at Barsham, Beccles, Suffolk, on 6 July 1884, a son of Harry and Margaret Pearson. In 1891 his family lived at Fox Farm, Willingham, Suffolk, and by 1901 they were living at Flixton Marsh Road, Blundeston, and Arthur was a farm labourer.

In 1914 Arthur married Alice Mildred Burgess. They lived at 165 Saint Margaret’s Road, Lowestoft.

A Private with the 2/4th Battalion, George died on 5th of November 1917 at the age of 25. 

George was born at Lowestoft on 13 May 1892, a son of James and Sarah Edwards. By 1896 his family were living at 44 Stanley Street, and this was still the family home in 1911, when George worked as a grocer’s assistant. Subsequently George moved to Chatham.

A Deck Hand with H.M.S. Colleen, Samuel died on 6th of November 1917 at the age of 65. 

Samuel was either born at Stradbroke or Hoxne, Suffolk, on 18 May 1852, the son of Harriet Alice Hazell. In 1856 his mother married Frederick Oldman and the family lived at Aldeby. In 1861 the family lived at Stanley Hills, Aldeby, and the census shows Samuel as Samuel Oldman. In 1871 they were living at Water Heath, Aldeby, and Samuel, who was working as an agricultural labourer, is listed as Samuel James Hazell. Subsequently Samuel was known as Samuel Hazel Oldman.

A Sergeant with 15th Battalion, Victor died on 6th of November 1917 at the age of 30. 

Victor was born at Lowestoft on 10 August 1887, a son of Frederick John Cook Sterry and Mary Ann Sterry. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church on 4 September 1887. In 1891 his family lived at 24 Reeve Street, Lowestoft, and this was still their home in 1901 when Victor worked as an errand boy. 

In 1912 Victor married Lily Evelyn Cook. After Victor's death Lily married Harry Palmer and lived at 63 Worthing Road, Lowestoft.

A Private with the 18th Battalion, Percy died on 10th of November 1917 at the age of 32.

Percy was born at Blundeston on 8 March 1885, a son of John and Mary Ann Rudd. In 1891 his family lived at High Street, Blundeston. By 1901 they were living at The Street, Blundeston, and Percy was a bricklayer’s labourer. Later his mother lived at Ocean Cottages, Blundeston. 

On 22 February 1911 Percy sailed on the Royal George for Halifax, Nova Scotia.

A Leading Deck Hand with H.M. Trawler Thomas Crofton I. Walter died on 17th of November 1917 at the age of 49. 

Walter was born at Walthamstow on 31 January 1868, a son of Walter George and Emma Day. In 1871 his family lived at Shernhall Street, Walthamstow. 

Walter married Annie Jane Tucker at Christchurch, Lowestoft, on 10 March 1892. Walter was a fisherman, and they both lived at Whapload Road. By 1896 they were living at 4 Colville Road. 

Sidney Albert Painter
Died:

A Sergeant with the 8th Battalion, Sidney died on 17th of November 1917 at the age of 20. 

Sidney was born at Lowestoft in late 1896, a son of Ernest Leonard and Ann Painter. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church on 1 January 1897, and his family lived at 24 Seago Street and this was still their home in 1901. By 1911 his family were living at 78 Haward Street, Lowestoft, and Sidney worked as a sail maker.

A Deck Hand with H.M. Trawler Morococala, Clifford died on 19th of November 1917 at the age of 26. 

Clifford was born at Lowestoft on 22 March 1891, a son of George and Mary Ann Hall. He was baptised at Christ Church, Lowestoft, on 15 April 1891, and his family lived at Rant Score East. By 1901 they were living at 88 Oxford Road, and in 1911 at 1 Royal Avenue. Later they lived at 73 Kimberley Road.

A Private with the 9th Battalion, Samuel died on 20th of November 1917 at the age of 37. 

Samuel was born at Pakefield on 6 January 1880, a son of Robert and Susannah (Annie) Turner.  In 1881 his family lived at Pakefield Street, Kirkley. From 15 March 1887 Samuel attended Cunningham Infants School. He then Kirkley Boys School, and, between 15 December 1891 and 6 September 1892 was a pupil at Cunnigham Mixed School. 

In 1891 his family lived at 24 Pakefield Street, Kirkley, and by 1901 at Beach Street, Carlton Colville, and Samuel was a mariner.

A Private with the 9th Battalion, Harry died on 20th of November 1917 at the age of 38. 

Harry was born at Lowestoft in 1879, a son of George Henry and Harriet E. Freestone. In 1881 his family lived at 20 Clapham Road, Lowestoft, and by 1891 at 2 Jacob’s Street. In 1901 they lived at 96 Haward Street and Harry was a leather merchant’s assistant. Later his family lived at 241 Raglan Street.

A Private with the 9th Battalion, Ernest died on 20th of November 1917 at the age of 19. 

Ernest was born at Ramsgate, Kent, in 1898, a son of Robert and Harriett Poole. In 1901 his family lived at 3, The Coastguard Station, Saint Lawrence Intra, Ramsgate. By 1911 Ernest’s family had moved to Lowestoft and were living at 14 Sandringham Road. Ernest’s father died in 1919 and later his mother lived at 243 Raglan Street.

Walter George Gooch
Died:

A Private with the 7th Battalion, Walter died on 23rd of November 1917 at the age of 20. 

Walter was born at Lowestoft in 1897, a son of Walter William and Charlotte Evelina Gooch. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church on 16 May 1897 and at that time his family lived at 51 Clemence Street, Lowestoft. His first names were Walter George Vincent. In 1901 his family loved at 8 Factory Street, Lowestoft, and by 1911 they had moved to 149 Saint Margaret's Road. The 1911 Census shows that Walter worked as an assistant at a boot and shoe merchants.

A Private with the 12th Battalion, Charles died on 23rd of November 1917 at the age of 27.

Charles was born at Lowestoft in 1890, a son of Charles Henry and Elizabeth Loynes. He was baptised at Saint John’s Church on 11 April 1890 and his family lived at 2 Hervey Street. By 1901 they were living at 33 Trafalgar Street, and in 1911 at 5 Trafalgar Street, and Walter was a railway clerk. Later his parents lived at 104 Beresford Road.

A Private with the 21st Battalion, Samuel died on 24th of November at the age of 20. 

Samuel was born at Mundham, Norfolk, in 1897, a son of Samuel and Emily Elizabeth Grimmer. In 1901 his family lived at 31 The Street, Lound, and by 1911 they were living at Lound Street, Blundeston, and Samuel was a farm labourer. Later his mother lived at 71 Northumberland Street, Norwich, before moving to Hunters Cottages, Kessingland Beach.

Samuel enlisted in the Army at Norwich. He joined the Middlesex Regiment, service number G/24464, and was posted to the 23rd Battalion in France.

A Lance Corporal with the 7th Battalion, Charles died on 24th of November 1917 at the age of 33. 

Charles was born at Kirkley on 24 October 1884, a son of Charles and Ellen Mary Branwhite. He was baptised at Saint John’s Church, Lowestoft, on 16 January 1885 and his family lived qt 13 Kirkley Villas. In 1891 his family lived at 3 Gordon Road. Charles’ mother died at Lowestoft in 1892 and his father moved to Ipswich, where he died in 1897. Charles was educated at the Grammar School, Stamford, Lincolnshire.

A Private with H Battalion, Edward died on 25th of November 1917 at the age of 21. 

Edward was born at Kirkley in 1896, a son of Elizabeth Caroline Chilvers. In 1901 he lived with his mother, and grandmother Sarah Chilvers, at 462 London Road. By 1911 he was living with his mother, brother and sister, at 7 Lincoln’s Buildings, and Edward was an apprentice shipwright. Later his family lived at 6 Lincoln’s Buildings. In 1915 Edward’s mother married Thomas Swan and they lived at 10 Strand Street.

A Private with the 7th Battalion, George died on 26th of November 1917 at the age of 24. 

George was born at Lowestoft in 1893, a son of George and Esther Wright. In 1901 his family lived at 13 Selby Street. By 1911 they were living at 36 Worthing Road, and George was an apprentice shipwright. Later his parents lived at 59 Church Road.

A Private with the 13th Battalion, Herbert died on 30th of November 1917 at the age of 34. 

It is difficult to establish the facts of Herbert’s early life. The 1911 Census states that he was born at Kentish Town, London, and would have been born in 1883. Soldiers Died in the Great War gives his place of birth as Hampstead, London.

Herbert was also, at times, known as Albert, Albert William, and Berty.

A Private with the 7th Battalion, James died on 30th of November 1917 at the age of 23. 

James was born at Lowestoft in 1894, a son of Samuel and Emma Holliday. In 1901 his family lived at 102 Denmark Road. By 1911 they were living at 53 Beccles Road, and James was a draper’s apprentice. 

James enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft. He joined the 6th (Cyclist) Battalion Suffolk Regiment, service number 2460. Later he was renumbered 40982 and posted to the 7th Battalion in France.

A Private with the 7th Battalion, Leslie died on 30th of November 1917 at the age of 23. 

Leslie was born at Kirkley in 1894, a son of Harry and Richanda Hulme. In 1901 his family lived at Victoria House, Victoria Road, Carlton Colville. By 1911 Leslie’s father had died and his family lived at Victoria Road, Oulton Broad. Later his mother’s address was 1 Sunnyside Cottages, Victoria Road, Oulton Broad. Leslie has not been traced in the 1911 Census. 

Leonard Charles Brady
Died:

A Private with the 7th Battalion, Leonard died on 30th of November 1917 at the age of 22. 

Leonard was born at Beccles on 9 January 1895, a son of William and Caroline Brady. Note some sources state that he was born at Kirkley but on two consecutive censuses his family recorded his place of birth as Beccles. Leonard was a pupil at Kirkley School from 31 August 1898 and throughout his life his family lived at 22 Saint Leonard’s Road. In 1911 Leonard was a grocer’s errand boy.

A Private with the 3rd Battalion, John died on 30th of November 1917 at the age of 19.

John was born at Saint Leonards, Sussex, on 3 May 1898, a son of George and Ann Elizabeth Burgess. He was baptised at Saint Emmanual’s Church, Hastings, on 12 June 1898 and his family lived at 4 Plynlimmon Road, Hastings. In 1901 his family lived at 212 Melbourne Road, Leicester. By 1911 they had moved to Lowestoft and lived at 30 Sussex Road. Later his parents lived at 15 Grove Road.

A Private with the 2nd Battalion, Henry died on 30th of November 1917 at the age of 19. 

Henry was born at Kessingland in 1898, a son of Charles and Henrietta Butcher. He was baptised at Saint Edmund’s Church, Kessingland, on 17 April 1898. In 1901 his family lived at High Street, Kessingland. In 1911 their address was ‘near the Blacksmith’s Shop, Kessingland.’ Later his mother lived at London Road, Kessingland.

Frederick was born at Lowestoft on 5 December 1888, a son of Frederick Thomas and Mary Clara Burgess. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, on 3 February 1889. In 1891 his family lived at 26 Crown Street. By 1901 they were living at 10 Beckham Road, and this was still their home in 1911 when Frederick worked as a house painter.

A Rifleman with 1st Battalion, Reginald died on 1st of November 1918 at the age of 20. 

Reginald was born at Lowestoft on 12 January 1893, a son of George and Mary Ann Whale. In 1901 his family lived at 85 Oxford Road, Lowestoft, and later lived at 22 Kimberley Road, Lowestoft. Reginald attended Church Road School and, from 27 September 1909, became a pupil at Saint John’s School. Lowestoft. By 1911 his family were living at 19 South Elmham Terrace, Victoria Road, Oulton Broad. Later his parents lived at 18 Wellington Road, Pakefield, Lowestoft.

Frederick was born at Halesworth in 1877, a son Harry and Jane Mary Larter. In 1881 his family lived at Smallgate Street, Beccles. In 1891 they lived at the Spread Eagle, Northgate Street, Beccles, where Frederick’s father was the licensee. In 1901 his family lived at 12 Carlton Road, Kirkley. By 1911 they were living at 11 Beach Road. In 1916 they lived at 87 Tonning Street and later Frederick’s mother lived at 6 Claremont Road.

A Private with the 15th Battalion, Sydney died on 2nd of November 1918 aged 36. 

Sydney was born at Islington, London, in 1882, a son of William and Alice Malvina Chapman. On 15 July 1882 he was baptised at White Roothing, Essex, where both his parents had been born. In 1891 his family lived at 2 Hilllside Grove, Chase Road, Edmonton, London. Later his mother lived at 10 Tottenhall Road, Palmers Green.

A Corporal with 2/25th Bn., Arthur died on 3rd of November 1918 at the age of 25. 

Arthur was born at Bethnal Green on 26 December 1892, a son of Walter John and Rosetta Read. He was baptised at Saint John's Church, Bethnal Green, on 28 January 1893 and his family lived at 108 Corfield Street. In 1901 his family lived at 80 Cyprus Street, Bethnal Green. By 1911 they were living at 30 Mendip Houses, Bethnal Green, and Arthur was a shorthand clerk and typist for a general merchant.

Frederick was born at Lowestoft in 1895, a son of Caroline Martha Smith. In 1909 his mother married William Boardley. In 1911 his family lived at 49 Whapload Road, Lowestoft, and Frederick was an errand boy at a drapery.

A Private with 7th Bn. Frederick died on 4th of November 1918 at the age of 24. 

Frederick was born at Aldeburgh in 1894, a son of John Edward and Mary Ann Mann. He was baptised at Saints Peter and Paul Church, Aldeburgh, on 16 March 1894. In 1901 his family lived at Portland House, High Street, Aldeburgh, and his father was an Inspector of Police. By 1911 his family were living at The Police Station, Bridge Street, Framlingham, where his father was the Police Superintendent and Frederick worked as an ironmonger's assistant. Later his family lived at 35 Beresford Road, Lowestoft.

Formerly a Private with the Suffolk Regiment, Arthur died on 5th November 1918 aged 25.

Arthur was born at Beccles on 1 April 1893, a son of Harry and Jane Mary Larter. He was baptised at Saint Michael's Church, Beccles, on 31 July 1893. In 1901 his family lived at 12 Carlton Road, Kirkley. By 1911 they were living at 11 Beach Road and Arthur was a shipbuilder's labourer. In 1916 they lived at 87 Tonning Street and later Arthur’s mother lived at 6 Claremont Road.

A Private with the Army Service Corps, James died on 6th of November 1918 aged 40. 

James was born at Lowestoft in 1878, a son of Samuel and Charlotte Barnard. In 1881 his family lived at 9 Colville Road, Kirkley. The 1891 Census appears to show James with his aunt and uncle, Jane and William Williams, at 20 Arnold Street. By 1901 he was living with his parents at 8 Beckham Road and working as a carter.

A Volunteer with a Voluntary Aid Detachment, Ethel died on 7th of November 1918 at the age of 33. 

Ethel was born at Kessingland in 1885, a daughter of George and Elizabeth Cathpole. In 1891 her family lived at Green Lane, Kessingland, and by 1901 they were living at Eddystone House, Church Road, Kessingland. At that time Ethel worked as a net mender.

Ethel married Clifford Edward Strowger, at Kessingland, on 27 December 1906 and they lived at Scarboro House Church Road Kessingland.

A Private with the 18th Battalion, Joseph died on 7th of November 1918 aged 20. 

Jospeh was born at Lowestoft in 1898, a son of Joseph and Emily Daley. In 1901 his family lived at 49 Stevens Street, and by 1911 at 57 Stanford Street. Later his parents lived at 7 Hart Gardens, Dorking, Surrey. 

Joseph enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft. He joined the Suffolk Regiment, service number 21098. He was then transferred to the Machine Gun Corps, service number 3936, and posted to France to serve with the 18th Battalion.

A Lance Corporal with the 20th Hussars, Harold died on 7th of November 1918 aged 23. 

Harold was born at Lowestoft in 1895, a son of Charles William and Sarah Ann Daines. He was baptised at Saint John’s Church on 18 January 1895 and his family lived at 38 Stanford Street, and this was still their home in 1901. In 1911 they lived at 12 Saint Margaret’s Plain, and later at 18 Cleveland Road. 

Harold enlisted in the Army at Norwich around March 1914. He joined the 20th Hussars and arrived in France, with his regiment, on 16 August 1914.

A Private with 3rd Bn., William died on 7th of November 1918 at the age of 22. 

William was born at Carlton Colville in 1896, a son of George and Elizabeth Read. In 1901 his family lived at Hillary Cottages, Main Road, Carlton Colville. In 1911 their home was at 3 Ormesby Villas, Victoria Road, Oulton Broad, and later they lived at 3 Olive Cottages, Carlton Colville. In 1911 William was at sea and on board the trawler Eclipse, LT 684, at Padstow. His father was the Skipper of the Eclipse.

A Seaman with Schooner Rosa Harriette, Charles died on 9th of November 1918 aged 29. 

Charles was born at Kirstead, Norfolk, on 5 April 1889, a son of John Amos and Emily Skeet. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Kirstead, on 26 May 1889. In 1891 his family lived at Kirstead. By 1901 they were living at 9 Nut Lane, Morley Saint Peter, Norfolk.

An Able Seaman with HMS Eaglet, Benjamin died on 9th of November 1918 at aged 29. 

Benjamin was born at Langley, Norfolk, on 28 November 1888, a son of Jane Blake. In 1891 he lived at Langley with his grandparents Benjamin and Frances Blake. His mother married Stephen Grimson and in 1901 Benjamin lived with them at Toft Monks, Norfolk. In 1911 Benjamin was the Fourth Hand on the trawler Boy Russell, LT 346, at Padstow.

A Deck Hand with H.M.P.M.S. Ascot. Samuel died on 10th of November 1918 at the age of 22. 

Samuel was born at Lowestoft on 31 October 1896, a son of James and Maud Edmunds. By 1901 Samuel's father had died and his mother married Charles Forwood and they lived at 8 Gun Lane, Lowestoft. Later they lived at 82 Queens Road.  

At Lowestoft Petty Sessions on 21 November 1910 Samuel was found guilty of stealing 31 herring worth 9d (9 pence). He was sentenced to four years detention: until he was 19 years of age. In 1911 he was at the Kerrison Reformatory School, Thorndon, Suffolk.

A Second Hand with H.M.P.M.S. Ascot. Archie died on 10th of November 1918 at the age of 28.

Archie was born at Oulton Broad on 9 April 1890, a son of George and Kezia Leabon. He was baptised at Saint Peter's Church, Carlton Colville, on 18 May 1890. In 1891 his family lived at Whites Cottages, Victoria Road, Oulton Broad, and by 1911 they had moved to Laurel Villa, Victoria Road, and Archie worked as an engineer.

In 1906 Archie saved a man from drowning at Newlyn Harbour. He was awarded the Royal Humane Society Bronze Medal (Successful Case Number 34556):

A Sergeant with the 11th Battalion, William died on 11th of November 1918, aged 26.

William was born at Lowestoft in 1892, a son of William James and Lilly Annie Boardley. In 1901 he was living with his maternal grandparents, William and Sarah Beecroft, at 13 Commercial Road, and in 1911 he was also living with his grandparents who had, by then, moved to 19 The Hemplands. William worked as a carter-contractor. Later his mother lived at 51 Old Street, then 104 Beccles Road, and subsequently at 83 Roman Road.

A Rifleman with 3/17th Bn., Charles died on 11th of November 1918 at the age of 29. 

Charles was born at West Ham in 1889, a son of Charles Albert and Elizabeth Corby. By 1901 his family was living at 1911 58 Arthingworth Street, Stratford, West Ham, London, and this was still their home in 1911 when Charles worked as a locomotive fitter for the Great Eastern Railway Company. Later his parents lived at 55 Pakefield Street, Lowestoft.

Formerly a Seaman with the Royal Naval Reserve, Pelham died on 15th of November 1918 at the age of 25.

Pelham was born at Kessingland on 9 July 1893, a son of Henry and Sarah Ann Turrell. He was baptised at Saint Edmund's Church, Kessingland, on 21 April 1901. In 1901 his family lived at The Beach, Kessingland, and by 1911 they were living at Hadleigh Cottages, London Road, Kessingland, and Pelham worked as a fisherman. Later his family lived at Russell Cottages, Kessingland.

A Deck Hand with H.M.S. Ceto, Arthur died on 16th of November 1918 aged 25. 

Arthur was born at Pakefield on 23 April 1893, a son of Arthur and Alice Barber. In 1901 his family lived at Main Road, Carlton Colville. By 1911 they were living at Bridge Road, Oulton Broad, and Arthur was a fisherman. 

On 28 November 1914 Arthur married Eva Violet Baldry at Saint Peter’s Church, Carlton Colville. Arthur was a fisherman and they both lived at Oulton Broad.

A Sergeant with 604 Mechanical Transport Company, George died on 17th of November 1918 aged 30. 

George was born at Wrentham in 1888, a son of Martin and Florence Elizabeth Lambert. In 1891 his family lived at 97 London Road, Lowestoft, and by 1901 at 225 London Road. Later his parents lived at 32 Carlton Road.

A Stoker with H.M.S. Wildfire, Godfrey died on 17th of November 1918 at the age of 27. 

Godfrey was born at North Cove on 26 August 1891, a son of Godfrey Gurney and Selina Lee. In 1901 his family lived at Back Lane, Barnby. By 1911 they were living at 6 The Green, Barnby, and Godfrey was a fisherman. 

Godfrey joined the Royal Naval Reserve on 13 February 1912.

On 26 October 1912 Godfrey worked on the trawler Pewsey, LT 786; on 5 April 1913 he was working on the Reward, LT 463; and on 1 April 1914 trawler YH 681.

George was born at Driffield, Yorkshire, on 2 May 1863, a son of Richard and Mary Richardson. In 1871 his family lived at Haughton Terrace, Hunslet, Leeds.

William was born at Lowestoft in 1897, a son of William John and Rhoda Frances Wright. In 1901 his family lived at 145 Saint Peter’s Street, and by 1911 at 88 Clapham Road. Later his parents lived at Etive, London Road.

Frederick was born at Lowestoft in 1896, a son of Ephraim Dowe and Tabitha Ann Garwood. In 1901 his family lived at 228 Raglan Street, Lowestoft. By 1911 his family were living at 1 Leiston Road, Lowestoft, and Frederick was a watchmaker's striker. By February 1915 they were living at 78 Alexandra Road Lowestoft.

A Deck Hand with H.M.S. Halcyon, George died on 18th of November 1918 at the age of 26. 

George was born at Barnby on 11 September 1892, a son of George and Mary Baxter. In 1901 George lived with his grandparents, Richard and Ann Chilvers, at Brick Kiln Cottages, Aldeburgh. In 1911 his family lived at Back Lane, Barnby, and George worked as a fisherman. By 1917 their home was at 11 Mill Road, Barnby.

George joined the Royal Naval Reserve on 10 May 1917. His service record shows that he served with H.M.S. Vivid, to 16 August 1917, and then H.M.S. Halcyon.

A Second Hand with H.M.S. Victory, George died on 24th of November 1918 at the age of 34. 

George was born at Lowestoft on 3 October 1884, a son of Frederick George and Hannah Jane Sparrow. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 4 July 1886. In 1891 his family lived at 2 Sunrise Cottages, Whapload Road. Later they lived at 112 Beccles Road. 

In 1908 George was the skipper of the trawler John and Emma, LT 204.

No biographical details about James prior to 1915 have been traced. He may have been born in Norwich. 

James married Sophia Sarah Mingay in 1915. Their home was at 17 South Elmham Terrace, Oulton Road, Lowestoft.

Frederick was born at Lowestoft on 18 August 1893, a son of Frederick James and Caroline Elizabeth Watson. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 13 September 1893, and his family lived at 21 Cathcart Street, Lowestoft. In 1911 Frederick was a labourer working for a fish curer.

George was born at Corton on 4 November 1885, a son of George and Ellen Smith.

Walter was born at Lowestoft in 1896, a son of Francis Robert and Marie Elsie Sayer. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 13 August 1897 and his family lived at 4 Battery Green Road. By 1911 his family were living at Saint Margaret’s, The Marina, and Walter was a boarder at Framlingham College. Later his family lived at 94 Clapham Road, and his brother, John, lived at 19 The Esplanade.

Formerly a Gunner with the Royal Garrison Artillery, John died on 8th of November 1919 at the age of 23. 

John was born at Westwoodhay, near Hungerford, Berkshire, in 1896, a son of John and Isabel Welling. In 1901 his family lived at Euston Road, Barnham Suffolk. By 1911 they were living at Park Cottage Somerleyton, and John, like his father, was a gamekeeper.  

John volunteered to join the Army. He arrived in France on 11 July 1915. He joined the Royal Garrison Artillery, service number 41881, and served with 92 Siege Battery.

Formerly a Deck Hand with the Royal Naval Reserve, William John died on 23rd of November 1919 at the age of 25.

William was born at Lowestoft on 15 November 1894, a son of Joseph and Alice Belton. In 1901 his family lived at 58 Reeve Street and by 1911 they were living at 34 Worthing Road and William was working as a fisherman.

A Seaman Steward with H.M.S. Runswick Bay. Frank died on 3rd of November 1939 at the age of 23. 

Frank was born at Lowestoft on 26 May 1916, a son of Alfred Arthur and Elizabeth Ann Browne.

In 1937 Frank married Florence Alice Maltby at Lowestoft. By 1939 they were living at 9 Sparham's Buildings, Saint Peter's Street. 

Frank was at Dover, Kent, when he died, suddenly, from heart failure.

William was born at Caister-on-Sea, Norfolk, in 1920, a son of William Youngs Alice Dye. In 1921 his family lived at Ruthens Loke, Caister-on-Sea. By 1939 his family were living at 266 Saint Peter’s Street, Lowestoft, where his father had a shop.

William served with 38 Squadron. He was on board a Wellington bomber that was transporting ground staff personnel from R.A.F. Marham to Barton Bendish.

George was born at Kessingland on 4 October 1912, a son of Harry and May Rebecca Horne. George was baptised at Saint Edmund's Church, Kessingland, on 6 April 1913, and his family lived at lived at 1 Poplar Terrace, Kessingland. By 1939 George's family lived at Britannia Cottages, Field Lane, Kessingland.

George was born at Gisleham in 1912, a son of George and Maud Elizabeth Spillings. In 1921 his family lived at Black Street, Gisleham. By 1939 his parents were living at 4 Mill Villas, Gisleham. 

George was a fisherman and in 1939 he lived at 29 Poulton Road, Fleetwood.

William was born at Pakefield on 15 June 1905, a son of Charles Henry and Blanche Anne Thacker. In 1911 his family lived at 4 Flora Terrace, Carlton Road, Pakefield, and this was still their home in 1921. 

In 1921 William was the Cook on the W. J. Gearing’s trawler D.J.G., LT 260, based at Lowestoft.

A Deck Hand with Fishing Vessel Sulby (Fleetwood), Russell died on 21st of November 1939 at the age of 25. 

Russell was born at Lowestoft on 10 February 1914, a son of Randal George Fisher and of Elsie May Fisher. He was baptised at Saint Peter's Church, Kirkley, and his family lived at 74 Saint Georges Road and this was their home for the rest of his life.

In 1939 Russell lodged at 37 Oak Street, Fleetwood, and he worked as a fisherman.

A Lamp Trimmer with Trinity House Lighthouse and Pilotage Service Light Vessel No. 60 East Oaze, Frank died on 1st of November 1940 aged 37. 

Frank was born at Haddiscoe on 17 October 1903, a son of James and Rachel Annie Alp. He was baptised at Haddiscoe on 8 November 1903. By 1911 his family were living at 8 Fir Terrace, Fir Lane, Lowestoft. In 1921 his family lived at 9 Fir Terrace and Frank was an apprentice plater with Colby Brothers Shipbuilders at Oulton Broad.

A Second Hand with H.M. Trawler Tilbury Ness. Edward died on 1st of November 1940 at the age of 35.

Edward was born at Lowestoft on 11 March 1906 a son of Robert George and Florence Esther Bessey of Lowestoft Suffolk. In 1911 his family lived at Bishop's Buildings, Mariner's Street, Lowestoft, and by 1921 his family lived at rear of number 7 Park Road, Lowestoft. At that time Edward worked as a drift-net fisherman for A. J. Turner of Lowestoft.  

Edward's home was at Gooderhams Cottages, Whapload Road, Lowestoft.

A Civilian, Olive died on 2nd of November 1940 aged 43. 

Olive was born at High Roding, Essex, in 1897, a daughter of Philip Thomas and Sarah Beadle Bone. In 1901 her family lived at Portland Road, Bishop’s Stortford. By 1911 they were living at Victoria House, Oulton Broad, and Olive was a mother’s help. 

In 1921 Olive was a patient at Saint Audrey’s Asylum, Melton, near Woodbridge, where she was still a resident in 1939.

A Seaman Steward with H.M. Trawler Rinovia. Ernest died on 2nd of November 1940 at the age of 23. 

Ernest was born on 21 May 1917, a son of John William Mayhew and Eva Elizabeth Shillings. In 1939 his family lived at 1 Norfolk Street, Lowestoft, and Ernest worked as a general labourer. Later his parents lived at 30 Alma Road, Lowestoft.

Ernest served with the Royal Artillery from 1935 to 1938.

A Chief Engineer with Steam Trawler Lord Haldane (Lowestoft), Frank died on 7th of November 1940 aged 40. 

Frank was born at Lowestoft on 9 October 1900, a son of George Hicham and Beatrice Catchpole. In 1901 his family lived at 15 Lorne Road and by 1911 they lived at 10 John Street. 

In 1921 Frank was a stoker with the trawler Nelson, LT516

John was born at Lowestoft on 27 August 1882, a son of Charles and Charlotte Williams. In 1891 his family lived at 227 Raglan Street. By 1911 John was a herring fisherman living with his aunt, Eliza Harris, at 26 Whapload Road. 

On 30 September 1911 John married Hilda May Williams at Saint Andrew’s Church, Plaistow, Essex. In 1915 they lived at Shakespeare Avenue, Milford Haven.

A Deck Hand with Steam Trawler Lord Haldane (Lowestoft), Maurice died on 7th of November 1940 aged 44. 

Maurice was born at Gisleham 16 January 1896, a son of Isaac and Louisa Hammond. He was baptised at Gisleham on 22 March 1896. In 1901 his family lived at Niger Terrace, Pakefield, and in 1911 they lived at 15 Wellington Road, Pakefield, and Maurice was a golf caddie at the nearby golf club.

A Third Hand with Steam Trawler Vessel Lord Haldane (Lowestoft), George died on 7th of November 1940 aged 44. 

George was born at Lowestoft on 14 February 1896, a son of Leonard and Alice Oldman. In 1901 his family lived at 100 Seago Street. On 9 March 1903 George became a pupil at Saint Margaret’s School. In 1911 George lived with his grandparents, George and Hannah Howard, at 7 Haward Street. By 1915 George was living at 1 Factory Court, Factory Street.

A Seaman Cook with H.M. Trawler William Wesney. Edmund died on 7th of November 1940 at the age of 28. 

Edmund was born at Lowestoft on 24 June 1912, a son of Arthur and Ethel Sharpe. Note: the 1921 Census states that he was born at Penzance. In 1921 his family lived at 4 Avondale Road, Lowestoft, and later at 32 Minden Road, Lowestoft. 

Edmund married Alice Maud Cook at Lowestoft in 1932. By 1939 their home was at 46 Poplar Road, Carlton Colville.

A Private, Fred died on 12th of November 1940, at the age of 25. 

Fred was born at Lowestoft on 25 January 1915, a son of Fred William and Bessie Howard of 7 Bruce Street, Lowestoft. He was baptised at Saint John's Church, Lowestoft, on 12 March 1915. 

Fred's father was serving with the Norfolk Regiment when he was born and his father was killed in action in 1917. Fred's mother remarried and she lived at 85 Blackheath Road in 1939 (this was Fred's address according to burial records).

A Civilian, Harry died on 18th of November 1940 aged 10. 

Harry was born at Great Yarmouth on 23 July 1930, a son of Percy Oliver and Lily May Hoyle. In 1939 his family lived at 3 Davy Cottages, High Street, Gorleston. Harry’s maternal grandmother, Althea Sarbutt, nee James, lived at 63 Raglan Street.

It appears that Harry was visiting Lowestoft and was outside the naval base, on Battery Green Road, when he was injured in an air raid and he died the same day at the Lowestoft and North Suffolk Hospital.

A Seaman with H.M. Trawler Kennymore. James died on 25th of November 1940 at the age of 29. 

James was born at Lowestoft, a son of Charles Edward Turner Barnard and Lottie Maud Barnard. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 16 May 1911, and his family lived at 37 Kent Road. The baptised register gives his date of birth as 27 April, and his middle name as Ernest. However, Royal Navy war graves records give his date of birth as 29 April and his middle name as Edward.

William was born at Lowestoft on 10 September 1914, a son of William Alfred and Rosie May Nunn. He was baptised at Saint John’s Church on 2 October 1914 and his family lived at 20 Kimberley Road. His father served in the Royal Naval Reserve in World War One and died when his ship, the Drifter Gleaner of the Sea, was lost in 1916. In 1921 William’s family lived at 31 Cleveland Road.

By 1939 Samuel was a fisherman and he lived with his widowed mother The Sailor’s Home, Kessingland, fisherman. Later his mother lived at 1 Shelter Cottages Kessingland.

George was born at Norwich on 26 August 1902, a son of George Henry and Priscilla Wright. On 26 April 1909 when George, and his older brother Arthur, became pupils at Saint Margaret’s School, Lowestoft, and his family lived at ‘Norwich House’.

The 1911 Census shows his family living at 13 Pigg’s Lane, Norwich. By 1921 his family was living at 28 White Horse Street, Lowestoft, and George worked as a carter for Ellis and Sons at Whapload Road.

Edward was born at Oulton Broad on 31 July 1901, a son of Herbert Wallace and Eliza Greengrass. He was baptised at Saint Mark’s Church on 29 September 1901 and his family lived at Carlton Colville. In 1917 his family lived at 16 Kimberley Road. 

In 1938 Edward married Ethel Alice Turner, this was registered in the Lothingland district. In 1939 they lived at 155A The Avenue and Edward was a general labourer and fish worker.

William was born at Lowestoft on 1 September 1914, a son of William Henry Peek and of Elizabeth Charlotte Peek. He was baptised at Saint Peter's Church, Kirkley, on 30 October 1914 and his family lived at 12 John Street, Lowestoft. Later his family lived at Kendal House, Kendal Road, Lowestoft.

William married Gertrude Muriel Littlewood, of Great Yarmouth, at Great Yarmouth in 1937.

Leonard was born at Kessingland on 22 November 1900, a son of Lewis Charles and Minnie Jane Blowers. He was baptised at Saint Edmunds Church, Kessingland, on 20 January 1901. In 1901 his family lived at High Street, Kessingland. By 1911 they were living at High Path, Beach, Kessingland, and this was still their address in 1921 when Leonard worked as a fisherman (either for, or on the, Beamish).

A Second Engineer Officer with the tug S. S. Aid (London), Bernard died on 29th of November 1940 aged 34.

Bernard was born at Kessingland in 1906, a son of Ernest and Blanche Pauline Moyse. He was baptised at Saint Edmund’s Church, Kessingland, on 1 April 1906. In 1911 his family lived at 2 Prospect Place, Kessingland, and this was still their home in 1921 when Bernard was a grocer’s assistant working for Mr. G. Brock at Lowestoft Road, Kessingland. 

Robert Norman Watson
Died:

A Chief Engineer Officer with S.S. Larpool (Whitby), Robert died on 2nd of November 1941 aged 50. 

Robert was born at South Shields on 14 January 1891, a son of Charles John and Mary Ann Watson. In 1891 his family lived at 20 Chichester Road, Westoe, South Shields. Robert was baptised at Saint Michael’s Church, South Westoe, on 11 February 1891. In 1901 Robert’s family lived at 14 Vine Street, South Shields. By 1911 they were living at 10 Talbot Road, Tyne Dock, South Shields, and Ribert was a ship fitter. In 1914 Robert became a freemason.

A Seaman with H.M. Trawler Milford Countess. William died on 25th of November 1941 at the age of 21. 

William was born at Lowestoft on 31 October 1920, a son of William Clifford and Hilda May James. In 1921 his family lived at 269 Raglan Street, Lowestoft, and this was still their address in 1939 when William worked as a coach builder - woodwork.

William was serving on board H. M. Trawler Milford Countess when he suffered burns in an accident caused by burning petrol. He died from his injuries.

Died:

An Able Seaman with H.M.S. Barham, Jack died on 25th of November 1941 aged 20. 

Jack was born at Lowestoft on 22 December 1920, a son of George William and Charlotte Edith Freeman. In 1921 his family lived at 57 Edinburgh Road, and this was still their home in 1939 when Jack was a labourer at a silk works. 

By November 1941 Jack was serving with the battleship H.M.S. Barham in the Mediterranean. On 25 November 1941 the Barham was hit by three torpedoes fired by the German submarine U-331. The ship sank very quickly and 862 of the crew, including Jack, were killed.

A Sergeant (Pilot) with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, Mervyn died on 26th November 1941 aged 25.

Mervyn was born at Kessingland on 28 August 1916, a son of William Walter and Mildred Weavers. He was baptised at Saint Edmund’s Church, Kessingland, on 24 September 1916 and his family lived at 2 Poplar Terrace, Kessingland. By 1939 Mervyn’s parents were living at Bethel Drive, The Beach, Kessingland.

A Sergeant with Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, Harold died on 26th of November 1941 aged 20. 

Harold was born at Penzance, Cornwall, on 2 March 1921, a son of Ernest Sidney and Selina Dorothy Cooper. In 1921 his family lived at Low Road, Thurlton, Norfolk. By 1939 their family home was at 70 Alexandra Road, Lowestoft, and Harold was a butcher’s apprentice. 

Harold enlisted in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve between September 1939 and June 1940. By November 1941 he was a Wireless Operator / Air Gunner with 214 Squadron. 

Died:

An Able Seaman with H.M.M.B. Cervantes, Reginald died on 3rd of November 1942 at the age of 40. 

Reginald was born at Lowestoft on 27 April 1902, a son of Charles and Mina Cook. In 1911 his family lived at 44 Acton Road. 

On 26 December 1927 Reginald married Louisa Durrant at Saint Peter’s Church, Kirkley. Reginald was a fisherman and they both lived at Kirkley. By 1939 they were living at 80 Lowestoft Road, Carlton Colville, and Reginald was a timber labourer. 

Reginald was accidentally drowned in the River Swale, near Elmley Ferry. 

Victor Brady
Died:

A Civilian, Victor died on 6th of November 1942 at the age of 45. 

Victor was born at Lowestoft on 10 October 1897, a son of William and Caroline Brady. In 1901 Victor’s family lived at 22 Saint Leonard’s Road, and this was still their home in 1911. From 15 April 1901 Victor attended Kirkley School.

A Sergeant with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, Leonard died on 7th of November 1942 aged 23.

A Leading Radio Mechanic with H.M.S. Martin. Leslie died on 10th of November 1942 at the age of 21. 

Leslie was born at Lowestoft on 16 December 1920, a son of Ronald Bertie and Emily Elizabeth Clare. Leslie was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church on 4 January 1921 and his family lived at 12 Norwich Road. By 1939 his family were living at 4 Haward Street.

Leslie was serving on board H.M.S. Martin when the ship was sunk, off Algiers, by a torpedo from submarine U-431. One hundred and twenty six of the crew died.

A Chief Petty Officer with H.M.S. Ibis, Leslie died on 10th of November 1942 aged 29. 

Leslie was born at Lowestoft on 22 July 1913, a son of John E. and Kathleen F. Westoby. In 1939 his parents lived at 60 Kirkley Park Road. 

On 10 April 1937 Leslie married Vera Beatrice Annie Grice at Saint Margaret’s Church. Leslie was serving with the Royal Navy and based at the Royal Naval Barracks, Chatham, and Vera was a clerk living at 57 Reeve Street. In 1939 their home was at 49 Church Road. Vera remarried in 1950.

A Private with the 5th Battalion, Raymond died on 11th of November 1942 aged 24. 

Raymond was born at Great Yarmouth on 29 November 1917, a son of Charles William and Edith Alice Ditcham. In 1921 his family lived at 196 Stafford Road, Great Yarmouth. By 1939 Raymond’s family were living at 40 Norfolk Street, Lowestoft. Before joining the Army Raymond was a cotton clothing cutter.

A Gunner with 68 Medium Regiment, Clifford died on 14th of November 1942 aged 22.

Born at Barsham, near Beccles, in 1920, a son of Edgar Charles and Maria Bailey. In 1921 his family lived at Marsh Cottage, Barsham, and by 1939 their home was at 1 Back House, Rushmere. 

Clifford enlisted in the Royal Artillery in 1939. By 1942 Clifford was serving with 68 Medium Regiment in North Africa. He was reported missing on 20 June 1942 which is when his regiment was captured at Tobruk.

A Driver with 18th Division Headquarters, Neville died on 17th November 1942 aged 25. 

Neville, who was often known as Frank, was born at Saxmundham on 8 June 1917, a son of Francis William and Muriel Jennie Grice. In 1921 his family lived at Seafield, The Esplanade, Lowestoft. By 1939 his parents were living at Rockhill, Beach Road, Kessingland. 

In 1939 Neville was living at 66 Stowmarket Road, Neeham Market, and he was a hairdresser. 

BENNETT Ivan F W

An Able Seaman with H.M.S. Arethusa, Ivan died on 18th of November 1942 aged 21. 

Ivan was born at Lowestoft on 16 June 1921, a son of Frederick James and Esther Maria Bennett. In 1939 Ivan’s family lived at 9 Marlborough Road.

Ivan was engaged to be married to Miss Hilda Andrews of 41 Penlee Street, Penzanze.

A Leading Steward with H.M. Trawler Ullswater. William died on 19th of November 1942 at the age of 29.

William was born at Carlton Colville on 1 August 1913, a son of William Arthur and Charlotte (Lottie) Eliza Rouse. He was baptised at Saint Peter's Church, Carlton Colville, on 21 December 1913. His family lived at Carlton Street, Carlton Colville and by 1921 they had moved to 19 Sycamore Avenue, Oulton Broad.

In 1932 William married Christina Elizabeth Beckett and by 1939 they were living at 51 Kimberley Road and William worked as a builder's labourer.

A Pilot Officer with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, Richard died on 23 November 1942, aged 20. 

Richard was born at Pakefield on 25 December 1921, a son of Owen Eardley and Florence Gray. He was baptised at All Saints’ Church, Pakefield, on 12 February 1922, and his family lived at Sunnyholme, Carlton Road. By 1939 they were living at 10 Grayson Avenue and Richard was draughtsman and student and was also a member of the Auxiliary Ambulance.

A Private with 239 General Transport Company, William died on 23rd of November 1942 aged 25. 

William was born at Carlton Colville on 11 January 1917, a son of Charles Henry and Annie Maria Jane Bond. In 1921 his family lived at 4 Albert Cottages, Victoria Road. By 1939 they were living at 263 Victoria Road, Oulton Broad, and William was a press operator.  

In 1941 William married Mary E. Fox, this was registered in the Spen Valley district.

A Sapper with 560 Field Company, Harold died on 24th of November 1942 aged 24. 

Harold was born at Lowestoft on 19 November 1918, a son of Ewart William and Lily Maud Gooch. In 1921 his family lived at 93 Raglan Street, and this was still their home in 1939, when Harold was a fruit salesman.

A Leading Aircraftman with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, Gordon died on 25th of November 1942 aged 25. 

Gordon was born at Lowestoft on 16 October 1917, a son of James Harry and Rennie Warner. In 1921 his family lived at 81 Beresford Road and by 1939 they were living at 50 Beccles Road, Oulton Broad. In 1941 Gordon married Hazel Bird; this was registered in the Lothingland district. 

Chester William Percival Thompson

A Skipper with H.M. Drifter Willing Boys, Chester died on 27th of November 1942 at the age of 37.

Chester was born at Kessingland on 8 July 1905, a son of Alexander John and Jane Elizabeth Thompson. In 1911 his family lived at 3 Lakenham Cottages, Beach Street, Pakefield, and, by 1921 they were living at 10 Lovewell Road and this was still the family home in 1939.

A Corporal with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, Cecil died on 2nd of November 1943 aged 34. 

Cecil was born at Blundeston on 16 September 1909, a son of Arthur James and Maud Ethel Wright. Cecil's father was killed in action in 1917 whilst serving with the Suffolk Regiment.

By 1921 Cecil's mother had remarried and the family lived at 16 Worthing Road, Lowestoft.

William was born at Lowestoft on 20 February 1901, a son of William James Dixon and Maud Marion Oldman. William was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 13 March 1901, and his family lived at 58 Wollaston Road. By 1911 his family lived at 25 Coronation Terrace, Fir Lane. Later his parents lived at 12 Harrison Road, Oulton Broad.

Reginald was born at Lowestoft on 3 November 1920: the son of Louise Harriet Bunn, nee Howlett. He was baptised at Saint Peter's Church, Kirkley, on 2 September 1921, and his mother lived at 34 Lorne Road. Later his family lived at 88 Rotterdam Road, Lowestoft.

A Private with the Royal Army Ordnance Corps, Alfred died on 12th of November 1943 at the age of 31. 

Alfred was born at Lowestoft on 29 December 1912, a son of Alfred William and Harriet Elizabeth Gook. Alfred's father died in 1936 and his mother remarried and in 1939 lived at 14 Poplar Road, Carlton Colville.

A Bombardier with 148 (The Bedfordshire Yeomanry) Field Regiment. Jonathan died on 13th of November 1943 aged 35. 

Jonathan was born at Luton, Bedfordshire, on 21 August 1908, a son of Jonathan William and Emma Allen. In 1911 his family lived at 16 Cumberland Road, Houghton Regis and in 1921 his family lived at 109 High Street, Houghton Regis, Bedfordshire, and later at 29 Drury Lane, Houghton Regis. 

Jonathan enlisted in the Royal Artillery in 1935. He served with the 148th (Bedfordshire Yeomanry) Field Regiment.

A Leading Seaman, with H.M.S. Quail, George died on 15th of November 1943 at the age of 36.

Brian was born at Lowestoft on 14 September 1907, a son of William Henry and Eva Susannah Baster. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church on 11 October 1907, and his family lived at Arnold House, Arnold Street. In 1911 his family lived at 9 Burton Street, Lowestoft. 

Brian's father served in the Royal Navy and died during the First World War.

In 1921 Brian's family were living at 10 Burton Street, Lowestoft. 

William John Lambert
Died:

A Private with the 4th Battalion, William died on 16th of November 1943 at the age of 23. 

William was born at Kirkley on 2 August 1920, a son of John William and Lilian Irene Lambert. He was baptised at Saint Peter's Church, Kirkley, on 5 September 1920. In 1921 he, and his parents, lived with his maternal grandparents Walter and Rachel Bunn, at 18 Lovewell Road, Kirkley. His parents still lived at 18 Lovewell Road in 1939. Later they lived at 3 Seaman's Cottages, Gorleston Road, Oulton Broad.

Died:

A Private with the 4th Battalion, Thomas died on 18th of November 1943 aged 27. 

Thomas was born at Lowestoft, on 6 April 1916, a son of Thomas Charles and Ethel Tuttle. He was baptised at Saint Margarets Church, Lowestoft, on 27 April 1916, and his family lived at 66 Tennyson Road. By August 1916 his family were living at 26 White Hart Street, and this was still their home in 1921. Thomas’ father died in 1933 and by 1939 the family home was at 47 Mariners Street.

A Flight Sergeant with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, Charles died on 27th of November 1943 aged 25. 

Charles was born at Lowestoft on 12 June 1918, a son of Charles Robert and Alice Maud Farman. In 1921 they lived at 105 Carlton Road and by 1939 Charles’ parents were living at 125 Carlton Road.

Probate records show Charles’ address as The Police Station, Stowmarket, hence it is thought that he was serving in the police before he joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve at some point after November 1940.

A Private with the 4th Battalion, Ivan died on 28th of November 1943 aged 22. 

Ivan was born at Lowestoft on 25 May 1921, a son of James Thomas and Ivy Florence Elizabeth Upson. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church on 16 June 1921, and his family lived at 83 Seago Street. Ivan was working as a yarn twister when he enlisted.

A Corporal with No 1Base Signals Repair Unit, George died on 7th of November 1944 aged 22. 

George was born at Lowestoft on 5 December 1921, a son of Frederick M. and Ethel May Folkard. In 1939 his family lived at 5 Broad View Villa, Hall Road, and George was a clerk in an ironmonger’s shop and apprentice shopkeeper. 

In 1942 George married Ruth Evelyn Leeds, this was registered in the Lothingland district. In 1944 their home was at 37 Duke’s Head Street.

A Chief Petty Officer (Pilot) with 741 Squadron H.M.S. Condor, Donald died on 8th of November 1944 at the age of 22. 

Donald was born at Corton on 22 April 1922, a son of Harry Edward and Jane Howes. His family lived at 1 Crossways Cottages, Corton. 

Donald was a Pilot serving with 741 Squadron, Fleet Air Arm, based at Arbroath. He was flying a Swordfish II aircraft on a navigation exercise over the sea when the aircraft was lost.

A Private with the 1st Battalion, Dennis died on 12th of November 1944 aged 19. 

Dennis was born at Lowestoft in 1925, a son of Walter and Georgina Peck. Throughout his life Dennis’ family lived at 30 Lovewell Road.

The 1st Battalion landed at Normandy on 24 June. In early August the battalion were at Gouvry and Dennis was wounded on 2 August. On 10 November the battalion was relieved and moved back to a rest camp on the Maastricht Canal. Dennis was accidentally killed, presumably while he was at the rest camp.

An Aircraftsman 1st Class (Pilot under training) with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, Percy died on 16th of November 1944 aged 25.

Percy was born at Lowestoft on 23 February 1919, a son of James Percy Robert and Florence Viveta Killett. He was baptised at Saint John’s Church on 14 March 1919 and his family lived at 7 Wollaston Road, which was still their home in 1939. 

In 1942 Percy married Dorothy Franklin, this was registered in the Southwell, Nottinghamshire, district, and Dorothy lived at Little Carlton, Nottinghamshire.

A Civilian, Agnes died on 19th of November 1944 aged 62. 

Agnes was born at Drayton, Norfolk, on 11 February 1882, a daughter of George and Maria Ribbans. She was baptised at Drayton on 10 March 1882. Agnes attended Drayton School until 2 February 1891 when she became a pupil at Martham School, and her family lived at West Somerton. Agnes left school in February 1895 to help at home.

A Private with the 1st Battalion, Robert died on 23rd of November 1944 aged 21. 

Robert was born on 24 March 1923, a son of Albert Edward and Edith Ada Thompson. In 1939 his family lived at Raveningham Road, Stockton, Loddon, and Robert worked on a farm. Subsequently his family lived at Blundeston.

Robert served with the 1st Battalion Royal Norfolk Regiment in north-west Europe. His battalion landed at Normandy on D-Day. On 23 November the battalion advanced to woods north of Oostrum and sent out patrols toward Wanssum. Robert was killed in action.

A Chief Engineman with H.M. Motor Minesweeper 101. Henry died on 29th of November 1944 at the age of 32.

Henry was born at Lowestoft on 6 October 1912, a son of Henry Ashley Roach and Harriet Elizabeth Roach. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 1 November 1912, and his family lived at 8 The Hemplands. By 1921 his family were living at 20 Melbourne Road, Lowestoft, and by 1944 at 5 Alexandra Road.

A Private with the Army Dental Corps, Dennis died on 21st of November 1945. 

Dennis was born at Norwich on 16 September 1923, a son of Richard E. and Florence M. Graver. In 1939 his family lived at 100 Essex Street, Norwich.  

He married Kathleen Maud Elvin, at Dereham, in early 1945. Subsequently Kathleen lived at Blundeston. Kathleen remarried in 1947.

George was born at Portsmouth on 5 November 1898, a son of George Frederick and Agnes Luff. He was baptised at Saint Mary's Church, Portsea, on 5 February 1899 and his family lived at 115 Esslemont Road, Portsmouth, and by 1911 they were living at 73 Jubilee Road, Southsea.
