By early 1918, Allied troops on the Western Front were weary from years of launching failed campaigns against the Germans. They were overstretched, short of manpower and suffering from low morale. In contrast, the German Army was boosted by the arrival of men from the Eastern Front – and busy preparing for a huge attack. CREDIT: IWM

A Private with the 52nd Battalion, Herbert died on 24th of March 1918, and the age of 21.Herbert was born at Lowestoft in 1897, a son of Richard and Edith Beckett. Herbert's first names were Herbert Stanley but he served in the Australian Army as Stanley Beckett and this is how he is commemorated.  Ludendorff Offensive
A Private with the 2nd Battalion, Jack died on 21st of March 1918 at the age of 21. Jack was born at Lowestoft in 1897, a son of John and Alice Skinner. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 13 March 1898 and his family lived at Arnold Street. In 1901 his family lived at Brier House, Police Station Road. By 1911 Jack’s father had died and he lived with his mother, and siblings, at 41 Seago Street. Walter
A Company Sergeant Major with 12th Field Company, Walter died on 21st of March 1918 at the age of 42. Walter was born at Pakefield in 1876, a son of Latha and Eliza Harriet Rouse. In 1881 his family lived at 2 Beanes Cottages, London Road, Pakefield. BY 1891 they were living at 79 Cambridge Road, Lowestoft, and later they lived at 72 Osborne Street, Lowestoft.Walter married Ellen Mooney at Kilworth, County Cork, on 12 August 1910. An Able Seaman with Anson Battalion, Kenneth died on 25th of March 1918 at the age of 20.Kenneth was born at Lound on 29 January 1898, a son of John and Rose Cooper of The Street, Lound. He was baptised at Saint John the Baptist Church, Lound, on 1 May 1898. In 1911 Kenneth was an errand boy (domestic). Kenneth attested for the Army Reserve on 11 December 1915 but was called up to serve with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve on 16 June 1917 and actually joined the Royal Naval Division which was designated to fight on land but was made up of naval personnel.  Ludendorff Offensive

A Private with the 4th Battalion, George died on 23rd of March 1918 at the age of 37. George was born at Lowestoft on 2 March 1881, a son of David Charles and Maria Harriett Ayres. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 1 May 1881. By 1891 his family were living at 8 Walton Road, Lowestoft, and this was George's home for the rest of his life. In 1901 he worked as a blacksmith's apprentice, and by 1911 he was an auxiliary postman.   Ludendorff Offensive
A Private with the 2nd Battalion, Ferguson died on 21st of March 1918 at the age of 31. Ferguson was born at Norwich on 26 April 1887, a son of William Mitchell and Emma Betts. In 1891 his family lived at 7 Cardiff Road, Norwich. He was baptised at Saint Thomas, Heigham, Norwich, on 28 November 1894, and his family lived at 26 Denbigh Road. A Private with 2nd Bn., Victor died on 22nd of March 1918 at the age of 23. Victor was born at Walpole, Suffolk, in 1895, a son of Alfred and Ellen Lougo. In 1901 his family lived at Walpole Road, Bramfield, and this was still their address in 1911 when Victor worked as a farm labourer. Subsequently his parents lived at Laurel Farm Cottage, London Road, Kessingland. Victor was living at Blyford when he enlisted in the Army at Bury Saint Edmunds. Victor served with A Company 2nd Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment.  Ludendorff Offensive
A Private with 3rd Battalion, Birkwood died on 21st of March 1918 at the age of 20. Birkwood was born at Corton on 16 December 1897, a son of George William and Alice Margaret Boon. He was baptised at Saint Bartholomew’s Church, Corton, on 6 February 1898. In 1901 his family lived at Church Lane, Corton, and by 1911 they were living at Sandpit Cottage, Corton.Birkwood enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft. He joined the Rifle Brigade, service number S/29495 and was posted to the 3rd Battalion in France, joining VII Platoon in B Company.  Ludendorff Offensive
