Distinguished Conduct Medal

A decoration established in 1854 by Queen Victoria for gallantry in the field by other ranks of the British Army. It is the oldest British award for gallantry and was a second level military decoration. Walter John Rouse

A Company Sergeant Major with 12th Field Company, Walter died on 21st of March 1918 at the age of 42. Walter was born at Pakefield in 1876, a son of Latha and Eliza Harriet Rouse. In 1881 his family lived at 2 Beanes Cottages, London Road, Pakefield. BY 1891 they were living at 79 Cambridge Road, Lowestoft, and later they lived at 72 Osborne Street, Lowestoft.Walter married Ellen Mooney at Kilworth, County Cork, on 12 August 1910. Charles William Hales

A Private with the 9th Battalion, Charles died on 13th of September 1916 at the age of 25. Charles was born at Lowestoft on 3 July 1891, a son of John and Sarah Ann Hales. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 24 July 1891, and his family lived at 4 Erskine Place. In 1901 his family lived at 5 Christchurch Cottages, Lowestoft. By 1911 they were living at 9 Gun Lane, Lowestoft, and Charles was a fish market labourer. Charles' sister, Hannah Hales, lived at Savory Cottages, Saint Johns Road. Lowestoft. Arthur Henry Godfrey

A Company Sergeant Major with 419 (West Lancashire) Field Company, Arthur died on 31st of July 1917 at the age of 35.Arthur was born at Oulton in 1882, a son of John and Harriet Anne Godfrey. In 1891 his family lived at Horne Hill, Kirkley, by 1901 they were living at Southwold House, Bridge Road, Oulton Broad, and Arthur was an apprentice carpenter and joiner.By 1911 Arthur had joined the Royal Engineers and the Census shows him as a 2nd Corporal serving at Chatham. Ernest Edward Pope

A Lance Sergeant with the 14th Battalion, Ernest died on 13th of October 1918 aged 24. Ernest was born at Lowestoft in 1894, a son of Henry and Phoebe Pope. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 31 August 1894 and his family lived at 59 Edinburgh Road and this was still their home in 1901. Later his family lived at 57 Saint Margaret’s Road. In 1911 Ernest worked on the trawler Ocean’s Gift, LT 387, at Newlyn. Distinguished Conduct Medal

Charles William Roe

A Sergeant with the 1st Battalion, Charles died on 22nd of October 1918 aged 23. Charles was born at Gillingham, near Beccles, in 1895, a son of Herbert James and Emma Charlotte Roe. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Carlton Colville, on 16 August 1896, and his family lived at Carlton Colville. By 1901 his family were living at Gate House, Marsh Lane, Carlton Colville. This was still their address in 1911 when Charles worked as a labourer on a farm. Later his parents lived at 118 Old Palace Road, Norwich. Distinguished Conduct Medal, Military Medal

Peter Annis

An Acting Sergeant with 54th Field Company, Peter died on 4th of October 1916 at the age of 32. Peter was born at Lowestoft in 1884, a son of James and Elizabeth Annis. In 1891 his family lived at 1 Well Yard, Saint Peter’s Street, Lowestoft. In 1901 the family lived at 7-8 White Horse Street, Lowestoft, where Peter’s father was the publican, and Peter was an apprentice bricklayer. Later his mother lived at 22 Factory Street, Lowestoft.
