Ludendorff Offensive

By early 1918, Allied troops on the Western Front were weary from years of launching failed campaigns against the Germans. They were overstretched, short of manpower and suffering from low morale. In contrast, the German Army was boosted by the arrival of men from the Eastern Front – and busy preparing for a huge attack. CREDIT: IWM

A Private with 30th Division Mechanical Transport Company, Herbert died on 21st of March 1918 at the age of 38. Herbert was born at Oulton Broad in 1880, a son of Lorina Laura Greengrass. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Carlton Colville, on 29 February 1880. In 1881 Herbert, and his mother, lived with his maternal grandmother, Ann Miller, formerly Greengrass, at Beccles Road, Carlton Colville. By 1891 Hebert’s mother had married George Read, and the family lived at Beccles Road, Carlton Colville. Note in the 1891 Census Herbert’s surname is given as Read.  Ludendorff Offensive
A Private with the 7th Battalion, George died on 21st of March 1918 at the age of 28. George was born at Lowestoft on 9 June 1890, a son of George William and Lavinia Ann Boyce. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 28 September 1890 and his family lived at 8 Church Road. By 1901 George's father had died and his family lived at Chain Cottages, 8 Church Road. By 1911 his family were living at 4 Fir Terrace, Oulton, and later his mother lived at 79 Lawson Road, Kirkley. Edward Cox
A Private with 131st Company, Edward died on 21st of March 1918 at the age of 29. Edward was born at Lowestoft on 24 September 1888, a son of Frederick and Susan Mary List Cox. In 1891 his family lived at 10-12 Albert Road, Lowestoft, and this was still the family home in 1901. In 1911 Edward lived with his brothers, and sister, at 23 Arnold Street, Lowestoft, and he worked as a general labourer at a provision manufacturer.  Ludendorff Offensive

A Corporal with the 9th Battalion, Clifford died on 21st of March 1918 at the age of 21. Clifford was born at Barnby in 1897, a son of Thomas George and Ellen Bunn. In 1901 his family lived at Beccles Road, Barnby, and this was still their address in 1911 when Clifford worked as a butcher’s boy. A Private with the 2nd Battalion, Christopher died on 24th of April 1918 at the age of 22. Christopher was born at Newcastle-upon-Tyne in 1896, a son of Richard Samuel and Margaret Hannah Coker Phillips. In 1901 his family lived at 87 Vine Street, Wallsend. In 1902 Richard’s father died and subsequently his mother married Robert Taylor. In 1911 the family lived at 17 Ontario Road, Lowestoft, and Christopher was an oilman’s assistant. Later his family lived at 11 Norfolk Street. Ludendorff Offensive
