Ludendorff Offensive

By early 1918, Allied troops on the Western Front were weary from years of launching failed campaigns against the Germans. They were overstretched, short of manpower and suffering from low morale. In contrast, the German Army was boosted by the arrival of men from the Eastern Front – and busy preparing for a huge attack. CREDIT: IWM

A Sergeant with 51st Battalion. Mark died on 21st of March 1918 at the age of 24. Mark was born at Mutford on 22 June 1893, a son of Alfred and Louisa Raven. He was baptised at Mutford on 20 August 1893. By 1901 has family were living at Beccles Road, Mutford. Mark enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft and initially served with the Suffolk Regiment with service number 14361. Ludendorff Offensive
A Private with the 6th Battalion, Arthur died on 28th of March 1918. Arthur was born 'Near The Bell', Carlton Colville, in 1888, a son of Walter and Emily George. In 1891 his family lived at 16 Severn Terrace, Oulto Broad. By 1901 they were living at Chipperfields Yard, Bridge Road, Oulton. By 1911 Arthur's father had died and his family lived at 5 Lothing Street, Oulton Broad.Arthur begin working as a lock keeper for the Great Eastern Railway in 1905 and he worked at Lowestoft Harbour. A Private with the 61st Battalion, Harold died on 21st of March 1918 at the age of 19. Harold was born at Pakefield on 6 May 1898, a son of William Tyrrell and Annie Laura Warford. He was baptised at All Saints’ Church, Pakefield, on 10 July 1898.  In 1901 his family lived at The Avenue, Pakefield. In 1911 his family lived at Ferndale, 25 The Avenue, Pakefield. Later they lived at 2 Trex Road, Pakefield. Harold attended Kirkley School and, on 18 June 1901, became a pupil at Cunningham School. He left school on 27 July 1911.   Ludendorff Offensive

A Private with the 6th Battalion, Bertie died on 21st of March 1918 at the age of 31. Bertie was born at Lowestoft on 7 December 1887, a son of Raca and Emma Gorrod. He was baptised at Saint Peter's Church, Kirkley, on 12 March 1887, and his family lived at 2 Newsom’s Buildings, Kirkley. In 1891 his family lived at 1 Southwell Road. Around 1891 Bertie became a pupil at Kirkley School. In 1901 his family lived at 20 Southwell Road and Bertie was a greengrocer on his ‘own account.’ By 1911 they were living at 16 Southwell Road and Bertie was a nurseryman.  Ludendorff Offensive
A Private with the 9th Battalion, George died on 21st of March 1918 at the age of 37. George was born at Lowestoft on 14 January 1881, a son of George Isaac and Pheobe Tripp Rackham. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 6 March 1881. His family lived at 5 Tonning Street. By 1891 they were living at 30 Raglan Street, and this was still their home in 1901 when George worked as a grocer.  Ludendorff Offensive
A Private with the 8th Battalion. Charles died on 21st of March 1918 at the age of 19. Charles was born at Somerleyton on 21 December 1899, a son of Benjamin Charles and Edith Georgina Gooch. He was baptised at Saint Mary's Church, Somerleyton on 5 February 1899 and his family lived at The Street, Somerleyton. By 1911 his family were living at 15 Severn Terrace, Kirkley Run, and later at 57 Oxford Road, Lowestoft.   Ludendorff Offensive
A Rifleman with 16th Battalion, Joseph died on 21st of March 1918 at the age of 25.Joseph was born at Wingrave, Aylesbury, in 1893, a son of George and Sarah Clarke. In 1901 his family lived at 8 Winslow Road, Wingrave. By 1911 his family were living at 1 Winslow Road and Joseph worked as a bricklayer's labourer. Later his parents lived at 67 Ravenstone Road, Hendon, London.Joseph married Violet Nettie Saggers at Lowestoft in 1917. Violet lived at 4 Freemantle Road, Lowestoft. Violet remarried in 1920.  Ludendorff Offensive
A Sapper with 208th Field Company, Esmond died on 21st of March 1918 at the age of 20. Esmond was born at Lowestoft in 1898, a son of John and Zillah Sterry. He was baptised at Saint John's Church, Lowestoft, on 6 March 1898, and his family lived at Alma Road. In 1901 their address was 5 Alma Road and this was still their address in 1911. Later his parents lived at 7 Grosvenor Road, Lowestoft.  Esmond enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft. He joined the Royal Engineers, service number 84668. A Driver with A/16 Brigade, John died on 31st of March 1918 at the age of 24. John was born at Oulton in 1894, a son of John and Mary Ann Reynolds. In 1901 his family lived at 271 Raglan Street, and this was till their home in 1911. By 1911 John was working as a fisherman and worked with his father who was the Skipper of the fishing trawler Crystal. Later his family lived at 29 Haward Street, Lowestoft.John volunteered and enlisted at Lowestoft. He joined the Royal Horse Artillery and went to France on 13 March 1915. Ludendorff Offensive

An Able Seaman with Drake Battalion, Walter died on 21st of March 1918 at the age of 19. Walter was born at Lowestoft on 29 November 1899, a son of Walter and Emily Piper. In 1901 his family lived at Bishop’s Buildings, Mariners Street. By 1911 they were living at 1 Infirmary Court, Saint Margaret’s Plain.Walter joined the Great Eastern Railway at Lowestoft on 19 July 1915.
