Arthur Henry Godfrey
A Company Sergeant Major with 419 (West Lancashire) Field Company, Arthur died on 31st of July 1917 at the age of 35.Arthur was born at Oulton in 1882, a son of John and Harriet Anne Godfrey. In 1891 his family lived at Horne Hill, Kirkley, by 1901 they were living at Southwold House, Bridge Road, Oulton Broad, and Arthur was an apprentice carpenter and joiner.By 1911 Arthur had joined the Royal Engineers and the Census shows him as a 2nd Corporal serving at Chatham. Arthur had enlisted at Ipswich.   Distinguished Conduct Medal
A Skipper with H.M. Drifter Gleaner of the Sea, Robert died on 26th of October 1916 at the age of 37.Robert was born at Lowestoft on 6 June 1879, a son of William and Ellen Hurren. Robert's father was a fisherman. Robert also became a fisherman and gained his certificate of competency as a skipper in 1910. Robert married Elizabeth Alice Turrell at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 4th December 1898. They lived at Sparham's Buildings, Whapload Road, before living at 21, and then 25, Worthing Road, Lowestoft.  Distinguished Service Cross, Gleaner of the Sea
A Skipper with H.M. Drifter Cosmos, George died on 14th of February 1918 at the age of 44. Daniel was born at Wrentham, a son of Daniel and Caroline Thacker. When he joined the Royal Naval Reserve George’s date of birth was recorded as 18 November 1872, but his birth was not registered until 1873. In 1881 his family lived at Church Road, Wrentham. By 1894 they were living at Lowestoft. In 1901 the family home was at Carlton Road and in 1911 they lived at Eddystone Villa, Kirkley Run. Mentioned in Despatches
John Malcolm Hook
A Private with 9th Battalion, John died on 8th of August 1916 at the age of 32. John was born at Lowestoft on 7 September 1884, a son of George William and Emily Martha Hook. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 5 October 1884. In 1891 his family lived at 39 Albert Street. John attended Cunningham School and, from 23 March 1891, was a pupil at Saint Margaret’s School. John’s mother died in 1896. A Private with 1/12th (County of London) Battalion London Regiment. Brian died on 7th of October 1916 at the age of 19. Brian was born at Lowestoft on 17 February 1897, a son of Henry and Mary Hadfield Jenkins. Throughout Brian’s life his family lived at 2 Pier Terrace, Lowestoft.Brian attended Roman Hill School and, from 15 September 1909 was a pupil at Lowestoft School of Science.  Pension Record Card, memorial plaque

A Corporal with the 3rd Battalion, Reginald died on 12th of September 1917 at the age of 28.  Military Medal
Henry Edward Backhouse
A Company Sergeant Major with the 8th Battalion, Henry died on 12th of October 1917 at the age of 25. Henry, sometimes known as Harry, was born at Bayswater in 1892, a son of Ebenezer Edward and Sarah Emma Backhouse. In 1901 his family lived at Chantry Road, Saxmundham, and in 1911 their address was 9 Chantry Road, Saxmundham, and Henry worked as a bottler at a mineral water company. Later his mother lived at 8 Chantry Road.  Military Medal
A Gunner with C Battery, 331 Brigade, William died on 30th of March 1918 at the age of 22.William was born at Ipswich in 1895, a son of George Smyth Frank and Ellen Bessie Green. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 18 August 1895. In 1911 his parents, and siblings, lived at Kirkstall, Leeds, and later at 33 Brunswick Road, Norwich. In 1901 he lived with his aunt and uncle Elizabeth and William Rose, at 80 Beresford Road. He was still living with them, and at that address, in 1911 when he worked as an apprentice corm merchant.    Military Medal
A 2nd Lieutenant with the 8th Battalion, Leonard died of wounds on 31st of December 1917 at the age of 28. Leonard was born at Rumburgh, Suffolk, in 1889, a son of Philip William and Emm Jane Dolman. In 1891 his family lived at the Farm House, Rumburgh, and in 1901 at Tivetshall Road, Pulham Saint Mary Magdalen. Later his family lived at Gisleham, before moving to Pulham Market, Norfolk. He was a brother of Gertrude Smith of The Hollies, Black Street, Gisleham. Leonard worked as a school teacher.  Croix-de-Guerre Belgium
