Distinguished Service Cross

The Distinguished Service Cross (DSC) is a third-level military decoration awarded to officers; and, since 1993, ratings and other ranks of the British Armed Forces, Royal Fleet Auxiliary and the British Merchant Navy have been included. A Skipper with H.M. Drifter Gleaner of the Sea, Robert died on 26th of October 1916 at the age of 37.Robert was born at Lowestoft on 6 June 1879, a son of William and Ellen Hurren. Robert's father was a fisherman. Robert also became a fisherman and gained his certificate of competency as a skipper in 1910. Robert married Elizabeth Alice Turrell at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 4th December 1898. They lived at Sparham's Buildings, Whapload Road, before living at 21, and then 25, Worthing Road, Lowestoft.  Distinguished Service Cross, Gleaner of the Sea
A Chief Skipper with H.M. Drifter Ocean Retriever, William died on 22nd of September 1943 at the age of 50. William was born at Lowestoft on 17 March 1893, a son of Edmund Thomas Capps and Laura Capps. He was baptised at Christchurch, Lowestoft, on 17 May 1893 and his family lived at Anguish Street.  In 1901 his family lived at 4 Wilde Street. By 1911 his family were living at 102 Saint Margaret's Road. In 1914 William was awarded his certificate of competency as a Skipper.   Distinguished Service Cross
Thomas  Crisp
A Skipper with H.M. Smack Nelson, Thomas died on 15th of August 1917 at the age of 41. Thomas, also known as Tom, was born at Lowestoft on 28 April 1876, a son of William and Mary Ann Crisp. In 1881 his family lived at 3 Rant Score East and by 1891 at 17 Seago Street. On 2 June 1895 Thomas married Harriet Elizabeth Alp at Saint Margaret’s Church. Thomas was a trawlerman and they both gave their address as 4 fir Lane. By 1901 they were living near Holly Farm, on Staithe Road, Burgh St. Peter, and Thomas was the mate on a fishing smack.  Victoria Cross, Distinguished Service Cross
