1939 Register

The 1939 Register provides a snapshot of the civilian population of England and Wales just after the outbreak of the Second World War. As the 1931 census for England and Wales was destroyed by fire during the Second World War and no census was taken in 1941.

CRIPPS Leonard Raymond
An Ordinary Seaman with H.M.S. Ajax, Leonard died on 29th of May 1941 aged 18. Leonard was born at Lowestoft on 29 October 1922, a son of Walter William and Blanche Cripps. His family lived at 19 Princes Road before moving to 14 Wood’s Loke. Leonard served with H.M.S. Ajax. In August 1940 the Ajax was assigned to the Mediterranean for convoy duties. On 21 May 1941 the ship was involved in the Battle of Cape Matapan and then took part on operations to evacuate troops from Crete. It was during this latter operation that Leonard was killed.     1939 Register
A Guardsman with 6th Bn., John died on 21st of September 1943 at the age of 21. John was born at Lowestoft on 19 January 1922, a son of Allen Edwin and Edith May Moore of Lowestoft Suffolk. In 1939 his family lived at 97 Cambridge Road, Lowestoft, and John was a draper's shop assistant.  1939 Register
A Seaman with H.M. Trawler Comet. Jack died on 30th of September 1940 at the age of 24. Jack was born at Kessingland on 12 September 1916, a son of Isaac John and Edith Annie Catchpole. He was baptised at Saint Edmund's Church, Kessingland, on 15 October 1916, and his family lived at 4 Belvidere, Kessingland Beach. By 1939 his family were living at 6 The Ridge, Kessingland, and Jack worked as a fisherman (weekly articles)On 30 September 1940 the Comet sank after hitting a mine off Falmouth. Henry was born at Lowestoft on 11 February 1905, a son of Samuel George and Lucy Ann Brady. In 1911 his family lived at 1 Bishop’s Buildings, Mariners Street, and later at 21 Chapel Street. In 1921 his family lived at 94 Seago Street. On 5 September 1931 Henry married Florence Kathleen Saunder at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft. Henry was a barman living at 94 Seago Street and Florence lived at 43 Norwich Road. In 1939 they lived at 94 Seago Street and Herny was a casual Post Office worker. A Lance Corporal with the 7th Battalion, Victor died on 15th of October 1944 aged 22. Victor was born at Lowestoft on 26 July 1922, a son of Charles Stewart and Annie Dora Elisabeth Longthorne. In 1939 his family lived at 12 Fir Lane and Victor was a painter. 1939 Register
A Skipper with H.M.L.C.T. 377, Cecil died on 4th of October 1944 at the age of 36. Cecil was born at Carlton Colville on 13 August 1908, a son of Arthur and Anna Barber. In 1911 his family were living at 10 Oulton Street, Lowestoft, and this was still their address in 1921.On 8 September 1934 Cecil married Rita Mary Victoria Catchpole at All Saints Church, Pakefield. Cecil was a fisherman living at Wood Farm, Oulton, and Rita lived at 18 Carlton Road, Pakefield.  1939 Register
A Private with the 1st Battalion, Hugh died on 23rd of October 1944 aged 24. Hugh was born at Chillesford, Suffolk, on 20 September 1920, a son of Harry and Elizabeth Knights. In 1921 his family lived at The Street, Chillisford. By 1939 their address was ‘Rear of the Fire Station’, Saint Peter’s Street, Lowestoft, and Hugh was an assistant at a hardware store. 1939 Register

A Lance Sergeant with the 1st Battalion, Stanley died on 14th of October 1944 aged 25. Stanley was born at Kirkley on 11 September 1919, a son of Thomas William and May Annie Cook. In 1921 his family lived at 192 The Avenue, and this was till their home in 1939 when Stanley was an apprentice printer.Stanley served in north-west Europe with the 1st Battalion Royal Norfolk Regiment. A Chief Engineer with Steam Trawler Lord Haldane (Lowestoft), Frank died on 7th of November 1940 aged 40. Frank was born at Lowestoft on 9 October 1900, a son of George Hicham and Beatrice Catchpole. In 1901 his family lived at 15 Lorne Road and by 1911 they lived at 10 John Street. In 1921 Frank was a stoker with the trawler Nelson, LT 516.  1939 Register
A Seaman Steward with H.M.S. Runswick Bay. Frank died on 3rd of November 1939 at the age of 23. Frank was born at Lowestoft on 26 May 1916, a son of Alfred Arthur and Elizabeth Ann Browne.In 1937 Frank married Florence Alice Maltby at Lowestoft. By 1939 they were living at 9 Sparham's Buildings, Saint Peter's Street. Frank was at Dover, Kent, when he died, suddenly, from heart failure.  1939 Register
