To be mentioned in dispatches (or despatches, MiD) describes a member of the armed forces whose name appears in an official report written by a superior officer and sent to the high command, in which their gallant or meritorious action in the face of the enemy is described. In some countries, a service member's name must be mentioned in dispatches as a condition for receiving certain decorations. John Tansley Williams

A Second Hand with Steam Trawler Lord Haldane (Lowestoft), John died on 7th of November 1940 at the age of 58. John was born at Lowestoft on 27 August 1882, a son of Charles and Charlotte Williams. In 1891 his family lived at 227 Raglan Street. By 1911 John was a herring fisherman living with his aunt, Eliza Harris, at 26 Whapload Road. On 30 September 1911 John married Hilda May Williams at Saint Andrew’s Church, Plaistow, Essex. In 1915 they lived at Shakespeare Avenue, Milford Haven. Mentioned in Despatches

Arthur Barber

A Deck Hand with H.M.S. Ceto, Arthur died on 16th of November 1918 aged 25. Arthur was born at Pakefield on 23 April 1893, a son of Arthur and Alice Barber. In 1901 his family lived at Main Road, Carlton Colville. By 1911 they were living at Bridge Road, Oulton Broad, and Arthur was a fisherman. James Ernest Barnard

A Seaman with H.M. Trawler Kennymore. James died on 25th of November 1940 at the age of 29. James was born at Lowestoft, a son of Charles Edward Turner Barnard and Lottie Maud Barnard. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 16 May 1911, and his family lived at 37 Kent Road. The baptised register gives his date of birth as 27 April, and his middle name as Ernest. However, Royal Navy war graves records give his date of birth as 29 April and his middle name as Edward. Mentioned in Despatches

Norman Frederick Rouse

A Warrant Officer with Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, Norman died on 24th of March 1945 aged 26. Norman was born at Lowestoft on 8 January 1919, a son of James and Olive Rouse. In 1921 his family lived at 40 Bridge Road, Oulton Broad. In 1939 his family lived at 39 Winnipeg Road, Lowestoft, and Norman was a solicitor's clerk. In 1943 Norman married Elizabeth G. Leonard Charles George Mayhew

A Flight Sergeant with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, Leonard died on 25th of June 1944 aged 29. Leonard was born at Oulton Broad on 31 July 1914, a son of Leonard and Edith Emma Mayhew. In 1921 his family lived at 31 Sycamore Avenue. On 6 January 1935 Leonard married Margaret Caroline Beamish at Saint Michael’s Church, Oulton Broad. Leonard was a waterman living at 68 Sycamore Avenue and Margaret was a cook living at Hall Road. By 1939 they were living at Llanberis, Broad Road, and Leonard was a yacht steward. Frank Broad

A Skipper with H.M. Drifter Ocean Fisher, Frank died on 16th of June 1918 at the age of 32. Frank was born at Dublin on 6 April 1886, a son of William and Annie Broad. His father was a career soldier. In 1891 his family lived at The Barracks, Heston, Middlesex, and by 1901 they were living at Canterbury. Frank has not been traced in the 1901 Census. It is possible, though not confirmed, that Frank was a fisherman working of the trawler A.J.W., at Ramsgate, in 1904 and noted for having tried to rescue a colleague, and being badly burned, when the trawler caught fire. Reginald Clifford Baker

An Able Seaman with H.M.M.G.B. 77, Reginald died on 16th of July 1942 aged 22.Reginald was born at Lowestoft on 13 December 1919, a son of Reginald Walter Baker and of Merab Baker. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 8 January 1920 and his family lived at 17 ‘rear’ Park Road and this was still their address in 1921. By 1929, when Reginald’s father died, the family home was at 311 Raglan Street. Reginald’s mother remarried and in 1939 she lived at 24 Winnipeg Road. Mentioned in Despatches

A Rifleman with the 2/17th Battalion, William died on 20th of February 1918 at the age of 20. William, who was also known as Ray, was born at Oulton in 1898, a son of William and Alice Dunnett. A Skipper with H.M. Trawler Fir, Royal died on 3rd of December 1942 at the age of 42. Royal was born at Lowestoft on 26 November 1900, a son of Charles and Margaret Page. He was baptised at Saint John's Church, Lowestoft, on 11 October 1901, and his family lived at 71 Tonning Street. By 1911 his family were living at 27 Ontario Road, and by 1921 at 10 May Road.
