Distinguished Service Medal

The Distinguished Service Medal (DSM) was a military decoration awarded until 1993 to personnel of the Royal Navy and members of the other services, and formerly to personnel of other Commonwealth countries, up to and including the rank of Chief Petty Officer, for bravery and resourcefulness on active service at sea. James Crooks

A Skipper with Trawler Acacia, James died on 1st of December 1919 at the age of 46. James was born at Ipswich in 1873, a son of John and Amelia Crooks. His father died in 1879 and his mother married William Keeble. In 1881 his family lived at 5 Handford Cut, Ipswich. On 20 October 1897 James married Jane Elizabeth Hales at Saint Margaret’s Church. James was a mariner and they both gave their address as 22 Seago Street. In 1899 they lived at Arnold Street. In 1901 they lived at 2 Tennyson Road, and by 1911 were living at 24 Seago Street. Francis William Beamish

A Deck Hand with H.M. Drifter Gleaner of the Sea, Francis died on 26th of October 1916 at the age of 22. Francis was born at Carlton Colville on 9th November 1893, a son of William and Jessie Beamish of 186 The Avenue Lowestoft Suffolk.Francis, like his father, was a fisherman. Frederick Charles Sayer

A Skipper with H.M. Trawler Gabir, Frederick died on 24th of May 1918 at the age of 34. Frederick was born at Carlton Colville on 19 March 1884, a son of Charles and Alice Sayer. His family has not been traced in the 1891 Census, but in 1901 they were living at 7 Victoria Road, Carlton Colville, and Frederick, like his father, was a wherryman. Distinguished Service Medal

Joseph Henry Kelly

A Second Hand with H.M.S. Q. 20, Joseph died on 29th of March 1917 at the age of 39.Joseph was born at Ballachrink, Lonan, Isle of Man, on 8 November 1877, a son of John Robert and Alice Jane Kelly. In 1881 his family lived at Ballachrink Farm House, and they were still living at Ballachrink in 1891. Later his father lived at Stanley Road, Peel, Isle of Man. Distinguished Service Medal

Harry Spicer Sharman

A Chief Engineman with H.M. Trawler Hayburn Wyke. Harry died on 2nd of January 1945 at the age of 46.Harry was born at Lowestoft on 3 August 1897 (hence was actually 48 when he died), a son of John Edward James and Mary Anne Sharman. Between 1901 and 1911 Harry's family lived at 4 Wilde's Score, Lowestoft, and the 1911 Census shows Harry working as a Telegraph Boy. Distinguished Service Medal, Dunkirk
