090441 raid

Lowestoft's 3rd worst raid of WW 2 took place on the night of 9-10 April 1941. The attacks began at 2145 hours with IBs that started fires in Denmark Road, Commercial Road and Clapham Road. These fires attracted more attacks, probably six bomb-loads of mixed HE and IBs between 2150 hours and 0035 hours on 10th. The worst incident was at Rotterdam Road where a direct hit on a shelter killed 9 persons.

James Miller

A Civilian, James died on 9th of April 1941 at the age of 58. James was born at Knock, County Down, Ireland, on 22 November 1882, a son of James and Agnes Miller. In 1901 his family lived at Knock Avenue, Pottinger, County Down, and James was a clerk. By 1911 they were living at Kings Road, Pottinger. On 23 January 1918 James married Beatrice Emma Fitt at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft. James was an agent and they both gave their address as Hazlemere, Alexandra Road, Lowestoft. 090441 raid

Alice Amelia Smith

A Civilian, Alice died on 9th of April 1941 aged 56.Alice was born at Deal, Kent, in 1885, a daughter of Thomas and Mary Ann Alice May. She was baptised at Saint Andrew’s Church, Eastry, Kent, on 13 May 1885. In 1891 her family lived at 6 Bridge Road, Deal. 090441 raid, Lost Street

Caroline Mary Norman

A Civilian, Caroline died on 9th of April 1941 at the age of 47. Caroline was born at Haughley, near Stowmarket, on 25 December 1893, a daughter of George and Alice Sore. In 1901 she lived with her family at Haughley, and at some point her parents lived at 16 Duke Street, Haughley. Caroline married Henry Francis Norman in 1918.By 1939 Caroline, Henry, and their children, were living at 2 Whitehouse Cottages, Flixton. 090441 raid, bestpic

Douglas William Sherrington

A Civilian, Douglas died on 10th of April 1941 aged 17. Douglas was born on 29 December 1923, a son of Robert and Kathleen Emma Sherrington. Douglas was probably born at Aldringham with Thorpe, where is father was a Police Constable. By 1939 Douglas’ father had died and his family lived at Denehurst, Park Road, Lowestoft. Douglas was a member of a First Aid Post and was injured when the First Aid Post at Till Road was bombed on 9 April 1941, he died the next day at Lowestoft and North Suffolk Hospital. 090441 raid

Daniel Overy

A Civilian, Daniel died on 9th of April 1941 aged 57.Daniel was born at Lowestoft on 26 June 1883, a son of James and Christina Overy. In 1891 his family lived at 17 Haward Street, and this was Daniel’s home until he married. In 1901 Daniel worked as a fisherman and by 1911 he was a boiler cleaner for fishing vessels. 090441 raid

Joan Mary Barnard

A Civilian, Joan died on 9th of April 1941 aged twenty-three months. Patricia was born at Lowestoft on 2 May 1939, a daughter of John and Kathleen Mary Barnard. In 1939 her family lived at 96 Rotterdam Road. Patricia, her mother, sister, grandmother, and neighbours, died at 100 Rotterdam Road when their air raid shelter was bombed during an air raid. 090441 raid
