090441 raid

Lowestoft's 3rd worst raid of WW 2 took place on the night of 9-10 April 1941. The attacks began at 2145 hours with IBs that started fires in Denmark Road, Commercial Road and Clapham Road. These fires attracted more attacks, probably six bomb-loads of mixed HE and IBs between 2150 hours and 0035 hours on 10th. The worst incident was at Rotterdam Road where a direct hit on a shelter killed 9 persons.

A Civilian, Jack died on 9th of April 1941 aged 18. Jack was born at Lowestoft on 1 September 1922, a son of Bertie Frederick and Rose Clarke. He was baptised at Saint John’s Church on 22 September 1922 and his family lived at 23 Payne Street. By 1939 they were living at 100 Rotterdam Road and Jack worked at a factory making tinned rations.Jack, his parents, two of his brothers, and several neighbours were killed in an air raid when a bomb hit the air raid shelter, at 100 Rotterdam Road, where they were taking cover.   090441 raid
A Civilian, Ronald died on 9th of April 1941 at the age of 15. Ronald was born at Lowestoft on 22 December September 1925, a son of Bertie Frederick and Rose Clarke. By 1939 his family were living at 100 Rotterdam Road.Ronald, his parents, two of his brothers, and several neighbours were killed in an air raid when a bomb hit the air raid shelter, at 100 Rotterdam Road, where they were taking cover.   090441 raid
A Civilian, Rose died on 9th of April 1941 aged 46. Rose was born at Lowestoft on 8 October 1894, a daughter of Charles Henry and Isabelle Chapman. In 1901 they lived at 15 Scarle’s Buildings, Whapload Road, and this was still their home in 1911 when Rose worked as a net mender.On 26 December 1918 Rose married Bertie Clarke at Saint Margaret’s Church. They both gave their address as 63 Oxford Road. In 1921 they lived at 23 Payne Street and Bertie was a trawler fisherman. By 1939 they were living at 100 Rotterdam Road and Bertie was a general labourer.  090441 raid
A Civilian, Roy died on 9th of April 1941 at the age of 16. Ronald was born at Lowestoft on 21 July 1924, a son of Bertie Frederick and Rose Clarke. A Civilian, Roy died on 10th of April 1941 aged 32. Roy was born at Holt, Norfolk, on 24 June 1908, a son of Charles Palgrave and Alice Sophia Moulton. By 1911 his family were living at 137-138 High Street, Lowestoft, and by 1921 they were living at 72 Carlton Road. On 11 July 1936 Roy married Winifred Alice Ansted at Saint Margaret’s Church. Roy was a joiner living at 8 Windsor Road, and Winifred lived at 2 Station Road. By 1939 they were living at Saint Lucia, Warren Road, and Roy was a carpenter and joiner.  090441 raid
A Civilian, Kathleen died on 9th of April 1941 at the age of 28. Kathleen was born at Deal, Kent, on 13 July 1912, a daughter of Philip Wellington and Alice Amelia Smith. In 1921 her family lived at 8 Alfred Square, Deal. By 1933 they were living in Lowestoft and in 1939 her parents lived at the Coast Guard House, East Street.  On 9 December 1933 Kathleen married John Barnard at Saint Margaret’s Church. Kathleen lived at 44 Crown Street and John was a net loom worker living at 42 May Road. By 1939 their home was at 96 Rotterdam Road.  090441 raid
A Civilian, Patricia died on 9th of April 1941 aged 6. Patricia was born at Lowestoft on 21 September 1934, a daughter of John and Kathleen Mary Barnard. In 1939 her family lived at 96 Rotterdam Road. Patricia, her mother, sister, grandmother, and neighbours, died at 100 Rotterdam Road when their air raid shelter was bombed during an air raid.  090441 raid

A Civilian, John died on 9th of April 1941 at the age of 82. John as born at Stradbroke, Suffolk, on 4 March 1859, a son of William and Susannah Elwood. He was baptised at Stradbroke on 26 January 1862. In 1871 his family lived at Barley Green, Stradbroke.It seems that John began work as a Railway Signalman about 1877. In 1881 he was a lodger at 34 Osprey Street, Rotherhithe. On 20 October 1881 John  married Emma Fanny Cattermole at Saint Mary Magdalen Church, Peckham. John was a railway signalman and the both gave 10 Queen's Road as their address.   090441 raid
A Civilian, Beatrice died on 9th of April 1941 at the age of 53. Beatrice was born at Lowestoft on 28 January 1888, a daughter of Thomas W. and Catherine C. Fitt. In 1891 her family lived at 29 Cambridge Road. By 1901 they were living at Victoria Villa, Queens Road, and this was still their home in 1911 when Beatrice worked as a dressmaker, on her own account. Beatrice was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 11 December 1912, and her family lived at Hazlemere, Alexandra Road.  090441 raid
