Samuel Wilson

A Private with the 10th Battalion, Samuel died on 20th of July 1916 at the age of 30.

Samuel was born at Wissett, Suffolk, in 1891, a son of Henry and Harriet Wilson. In 1891 his family lived at Balhams Cottages, Wissett. By 1901 they were living at Beccles Road, Barnby, which was still their address in 1911. Later his parents lived at Saint Georges Hut, Beccles Road, Carlton Colville.

Samuel volunteered and had enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft by November 1914. He joined the Essex Regiment and was posted to the 10th Battalion. He arrived in France with the Battalion on France 25 July 1915. 

From 19 July 1916 the 10th Battalion were heavily engaged in the fighting at Delville Wood. On 20 July they were tasked with taking over the line from King Street to east of Rotten Row. 

Samuel was reported missing on 20 July and later presumed to have been killed in action on that date.
