Wilfred Arthur Cole

A Private with 1/4th Battalion, Wilfred died on 16th of February 1944 aged 32. 

Wilfred was born at Gisleham on 6 October 1911, a son of Samuel Whyatt and Ellen Cole. In 1921 his family lived at White House Farm Cottages, Gisleham. His father died in 1931 and in 1939 his mother lived at Black Street, Gisleham.

In 1939 Wilfred was living at 18 Peldon Avenue, Richmond, Surrey, and working as a house parlour man.

Ernest Samuel Crouch

A Private with the 1/6th Battalion, Ernest died on 27th of March 1917 at the age of 31. 

Ernest was born at Lowestoft on 1 September 1885, a son of William and Elizabeth Crouch. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Kirkley, on 21 March 1889 and his family lived at 2 Lorne Road. By 1891 his family were living at 53 Lawson Road, and in 1901 the family home was at 62 Albert Street. In 1911 they lived at 8 Kirkley Street. Ernest’s mother died in 1911 and later his father moved to Canada. His sister, Laura, lived at 40 High Street, Lowestoft.

Conrad Percy Catchpole

A Lance Corporal with the 10th Battalion, Conrad died on 11th of August 1917 at the age of 20. 

Conrad was born at Kessingland in 1897, a son of John and Emma Catchpole. He was baptised at Saint Edmund’s Church, Kessingland, on 16 May 1897 and his family lived at Zulu Cottages, Kessingland. By 1911 they were living at 7 Broad View Villas, Oulton Broad.

Conrad volunteered and enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft. He joined the Essex Regiment, service number 14646, and was posted to the 10th Battalion. Conrad arrived in France with the 10th Battalion on 25 July 1915. 

Ernest Edward Cooper

A Private with the 10th Battalion, Ernest died on 8th of August 1918 aged 22. 

Ernest was born at Lowestoft in May 1896, a son of Peter and Annie Cooper. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 14 October 1896. Throughout Ernest’s life his family lived at 10 Cathcart Street. From 1 February 1904 Ernest attended Saint Margaret’s School. In 1911 Ernest was a confectioner’s errand boy.  

George Henry Harbord

A Private with the 10th Battalion, George died on 3rd of September 1918 aged 19. 

George was born at Oulton in 1899, a son of George and Jane Harbord. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 16 August 1899 and his family lived at Hope Cottage, Hall Lane. George joined the Great Eastern Railway in December 1913 and in 1917 he was a stoker at Lowestoft (Civil Engineering Department) and he joined the National Union of Railwaymen on 14 September 1917. 

Charles John Turrell

A Corporal with 10th Bn., Charles died on 1st of July 1916 at the age of 22. 

Charles was born at Lowestoft in 1893, a son of William and Maria Turrell. In 1901 his family lived at Seaview Cottages, East Street, Lowestoft. By 1911 the family were living at 29 East Street, Lowestoft.

Charles volunteered and enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft. He joined the Essex Regiment and was posted to the 10th Battalion. He arrived in France, with the Battalion, on 25 July 1915.  

Samuel Wilson

A Private with the 10th Battalion, Samuel died on 20th of July 1916 at the age of 30.

Samuel was born at Wissett, Suffolk, in 1891, a son of Henry and Harriet Wilson. In 1891 his family lived at Balhams Cottages, Wissett. By 1901 they were living at Beccles Road, Barnby, which was still their address in 1911. Later his parents lived at Saint Georges Hut, Beccles Road, Carlton Colville.

William Sterry

William Clifford Sterry

A Private with the 10th Battalion, William died on 1st of July 1916 at the age of 19.

William was born at Lowestoft in 1897 a son of John William and Esther Susannah Sterry. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 26 March 1897 and his family lived at Whapload Road. In 1901 their address was Robert’s Buildings, Whapload Road. By 1911 they were living at 25 The Hemplands, Lowestoft, and William was an errand boy.

Charles William Seeley

Charles William Seeley

A Private with 11th Bn., Charles died on 3rd of October 1916 at the age of 21. 

Son of Cornelius William and Edith Seeley of The Lodge Waveney Hill Oulton Broad; Lowestoft Suffolk. 

Stephen wood

Stephen Wood

A Sergeant with 11th Bn., Stephen died on 26th of September 1915 at the age of 23.

Stephen was born at Harleston, Norfolk, on 21st February 1892, a son of Jeremiah and Mary Wood. He was baptised at the parish church of Redenhall with Harleston and Wortwell on 30 October 1892, and his family lived at Kirkley, Lowestoft. By 1901 his father had died and his mother had married Thomas Farrow, and they lived at 235 London Road, Lowestoft. Later his mother lived at 12 Payne Street, Lowestoft.

Herbert Vine

A Private with the 13th Battalion, Herbert died on 30th of November 1917 at the age of 34. 

It is difficult to establish the facts of Herbert’s early life. The 1911 Census states that he was born at Kentish Town, London, and would have been born in 1883. Soldiers Died in the Great War gives his place of birth as Hampstead, London.

Herbert was also, at times, known as Albert, Albert William, and Berty.

Frank Rees Wheatley

A Second Lieutenant with the 1st Battalion, Frank died on 11th of August 1916 at the age of 34. 

Frank was born at Ilford, Essex, in 1882, a son of Frank Richard and Zillah Annie Wheatley. In 1891 his family lived at 151 High Street, Lowestoft. Frank was educated at Framlingham College. By 1901 Frank was a draper’s apprentice living, and working, at 35 Lower Brook Street, Ipswich.

William Cheney

A Private with the 2nd Battalion, William died on 28th of March 1918 at the age of 30. 

William was born at Carlton Colville on 3 January 1888, a son of Robert and Sarah Cheney. In 1891 his family lived at Marsh Lane, Carlton Colville, and this was still their address in 1901 when William worked as a stock feeder on a farm. Later his parents lived at White House Farm, Carlton Colville. 

Sidney George Francis

A Lance Corporal with the 2nd Battalion, Sidney died on 26th of December 1916 at the age of 25. 

Sidney was born at Lowestoft in 1891, a son of George and Annie Francis. In 1901 his family lived at 17 Edinburgh Road. In 1904 Sidney became a pupil at Lowestoft School of Science. By 1911 his family were living at 211 London Road South and Sidney was an elementary school teacher and worked at Roman Hill School. 

In 1915 Sidney married Edith Sarah May Newson at Lowestoft. In 1917 she lived at Saint Margarets Garden, Beccles Road. 

Randle Thomas William Gilby

A Private with the 2nd Battalion, Randle died on 28th of March 1918 at the age of 33. 

Randle was born at Lowestoft on13 September 1885, a son of William and Emily Gilby. He was baptised at Saint John’s Church on 7 October 1885, and his family lived at 3 Raglan Cottages. In 1891 his family lived at 222 Raglan Street. By 1901 they were living at 63 Stanley Street, and Randle was a housepainter’s errand boy. 

In 1911 Randle was working as a railway carter and lodging with his uncle, Randall Wright, at 435 Liverpool Road, Platt Bridge, near Wigan.

Rupert Percy Butler

A Private with the 9th Battalion, Rupert died on 3rd of July 1916 at the age of 22. 

Rupert was born at Ely in 1893, a son of Harry and Hannah (Annie) Mary Lord Butler. His father, a G.E.R. railway inspector, died in 1894. By 1901 Rupert’s mother, and older brother, Frederick, were living at 101 Stanley Street, and Rupert was living at the Alexandra Orphanage, Hornsey Rise, Islington, London. 

In 1911 Rupert lived with his uncle Horace Wright at 53 Rutland Road, Ilford, and Rupert worked as a clerk at a warehouse.

Ernest Frederick Poole

A Private with the 9th Battalion, Ernest died on 20th of November 1917 at the age of 19. 

Ernest was born at Ramsgate, Kent, in 1898, a son of Robert and Harriett Poole. In 1901 his family lived at 3, The Coastguard Station, Saint Lawrence Intra, Ramsgate. By 1911 Ernest’s family had moved to Lowestoft and were living at 14 Sandringham Road. Ernest’s father died in 1919 and later his mother lived at 243 Raglan Street.
