The Battle of the Somme (1 July - 18 November 1916) was planned as a joint operation between British and French forces to break the deadlock on the Western Front. But due to the German attack on the French at Verdun, Britain and its Empire would have to take the lead on the Somme. CREDIT: IWM

A Private with the 8th Battalion, Edward died on 1st of July 1916 at the age of 39. Edward was born at Lowestoft on 14 October 1876, a son of Abraham and Emily Clark. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 5 November 1876. In 1881 his family lived at Princes Road. In 1891 their address was 19 Princes Road. Later his parents lived at 15 Ipswich Road.On 10 January 1914 Edward married Ellen Maria Reynolds at Saint Margaret’s Church. Christopher Monckton
A Second Lieutenant with 13 Squadron, Christopher died on 1st of July 1916 at the age of 18. Christopher was born at Hilton, near Bridgnorth, Shropshire, on 4 April 1898, a son of Arthur and Lady Gertrude Moncton. Christopher’s maternal grandfather was the 4th Earl of Radnor. He was baptised at Worfield, Shropshire, on 24 April 1898. In 1901 his family lived at Hilton House, Worfield, and, by 1911, were living at Normanston Hall, Beccles Road, Lowestoft. His family also had a house at 29 Queen’s Road, Saint John’s Wood, London. A Corporal with 10th Bn., Charles died on 1st of July 1916 at the age of 22. Charles was born at Lowestoft in 1893, a son of William and Maria Turrell. In 1901 his family lived at Seaview Cottages, East Street, Lowestoft. By 1911 the family were living at 29 East Street, Lowestoft.Charles volunteered and enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft. He joined the Essex Regiment and was posted to the 10th Battalion. He arrived in France, with the Battalion, on 25 July 1915.   Battle of Somme 1st day, Lost Street
Frederick Herbert
A Corporal with the 8th Battalion, Frederick died on 1st of July 1916 at the age of 23. Frederick was born at Oulton, Lowestoft, on 11 May 1893. A son of John Frederick and Susanna Herbert .He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Carlton Colville, on 16 July 1893 and his family lived at Oulton. In 1901 his family lived at 38 Victoria Road, Carlton Colville. Later his mother lived at 16 Esplanade, and then 7 Ontario Road.  Battle of Somme 1st day
A Private with 7th Bn. George died on 1st of July 1916 at the age of 19. George was born at Barnby in 1897, a son of George and Mary Blowers. In 1901 his family lived at Carlton Road, Pakefield. A Private with 11th Company, Frederick died on 1st of July 1916 at the age of 26. Frederick was born at Lowestoft on 1 March 1890, a son of Ernest and Caroline Pluck. In 1891 his family lived at Lake Lothing Terrace, 2 Laundry Lane, Lowestoft. By 18918 his family were living at 12 Beckham Road and this was Frederick’s home for the rest of his life. A Private with 2nd Bn., Benjamin died on 1st of July 1916 at the age of 35. Benjamin was born at Lowestoft on 1 July 1881, a son of Alfred and Ellen Mary Woolner. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 30 October 1881. In 1891 they lived at 109 Saint Margaret’s Road and, by 1901, they were living at 62 Cambridge Road, and this was still their address in 1911. Battle of Somme 1st day
A Private with 8th Battalion, Robert died on 1st of July 1916 at the age of 25. Robert was born at Runham Vauxhall, Great Yarmouth, on 16 October 1890, a son of William George and Mary Elizabeth Brand. Note that on his service papers and in Soldiers Died in the Great War his place of birth is given as Neepsend, Sheffield. Robert was baptised at Great Yarmouth on 21 December 1890. In 1901 his family lived at 9 Saloon Street, Runham Vauxhall, and this was still their him in 1911 when Robert worked as a beer bottler.  Battle of Somme 1st day

A Second Lieutenant with the 15th Battalion , Charles died on 1st of July 1916 at the age of 28.Charles was born at Lowestoft on 30 January 1888, a son of Benjamin and Maria Saunders. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 30 March 1888. In 1891 they lived at 133 High Street, and this was still their home in 1901. By 1911 they were living at 28 Lyndhurst Road.In 1911 Charles worked as a bank clerk, for Barclays Bank, at Beccles and lived at Hermon, Waveney Road, Beccles. Battle of Somme 1st day
William Sterry
A Private with the 10th Battalion, William died on 1st of July 1916 at the age of 19.William was born at Lowestoft in 1897 a son of John William and Esther Susannah Sterry. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 26 March 1897 and his family lived at Whapload Road. In 1901 their address was Robert’s Buildings, Whapload Road.
