H.M.S. Vigorous

Samuel John Saunders

A Deck Hand with H.M.S. Vigorous. Samuel died on 18th of October 1918 at the age of 19. 

Samuel was born at Lowestoft on 9 April 1897, a son of William John and Eliza Saunders. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 5 May 1899 and his family lived at Malsters Score. By 1901 they were living at 3 Spurgeon's Score and by 1911 at 1 Florence Terrace, Saint John's Road. By 1915 their home was at 12 Raglan Street. 

H.M.S. Vivid.

Henry Charles Buck

A Deck Hand with H.M.S. Vivid, Henry died on 31st of July 1918 at the age of 31.

Henry was born at Lowestoft on 17 June 1887, a son of James and Alice Buck. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church on 16 August 1891, and his family lived at Oulton Corner. In 1901 his family lived at Hall Lane, Oulton, and Henry was an errand boy. By 1911 his family were living at 3 Hall Lane. 

H.M.S. Wildfire

Godfrey Gurney Lee

A Stoker with H.M.S. Wildfire, Godfrey died on 17th of November 1918 at the age of 27. 

Godfrey was born at North Cove on 26 August 1891, a son of Godfrey Gurney and Selina Lee. In 1901 his family lived at Back Lane, Barnby. By 1911 they were living at 6 The Green, Barnby, and Godfrey was a fisherman. 

Godfrey joined the Royal Naval Reserve on 13 February 1912.

On 26 October 1912 Godfrey worked on the trawler Pewsey, LT 786; on 5 April 1913 he was working on the Reward, LT 463; and on 1 April 1914 trawler YH 681. 

H.M.S. Zaria.

William Charles Kemp

A Second Hand with H.M.S. Zaria, William died on 17th of February 1919 at the age of 22. 

William was born at Tofts Monks on 29 May 1896, a son of Charles and Elizabeth Kemp. In 1901 his family lived at The Street, Rushmere, and in 1911 at Gisleham Road, Rushmere. 

In 1915 William was living at Burnt Hill, Beccles Road, Carlton Colville. William joined the Royal Naval Reserve on 8 June 1915. Initially he served on H.M. Trawler 'Fair View' and served on other trawlers during the war.  

HM Drifter Forward III

Samuel Albert Burgoyne

An Engineman with H.M. Drifter Forward III, Samuel Albert died on 31st of March 1917 at the age of 37. 

Samuel was born at Ramsgate on 4 April 1880, a son of Robert and Sarah Burgoyne. He was baptised at Saint George’s Church, Ramsgate, on 5 October 1880. In 1881 his family lived at 33 Princes Street, Ramsgate. By 1891 they had moved to Lowestoft and lived at 247 Raglan Street. 

HM Drifter Protect

William Mace Collins

A Deck Hand with HM Drifter Protect, William died on 16th of March 1917 at the age of 24. 

William was born at Lowestoft on 6 February 1893, a son of Arthur Josiah and Jane Collins. In 1901 his family lived at 15 Albert Street. By 1911 the family were living at 57 Beresford Road and William was a barman at a public house. 

On 21 April 1915 William married Alice May Barkaway at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft. William was a furniture remover living at 57 Beresford Road, and Alice lived at 335 Raglan Street. Alice later remarried and lived at 17 Summer Road. 

HMS Halcyon II

Sidney Charles Beckham

A Deck Hand with HMS Halcyon II, Sidney on 6th of December 1918 aged 22.

Sidney was born at Lowestoft on 7 June 1896, a son of Joshua and Alice Beckham. By 1901 Sidney’s father had died and his family lived at The Mariner’s Inn, Mariner’s Street, where his mother was the innkeeper. By 1911 they were living at 5 Nelson Terrace, Pakefield, and Sidney was a caddie at the golf course. They were still living at 5 Nelson Terrace in 1915 and later his mother lived at 2 Tram Terminus, Pakefield.

HMS Wallington

George Bryant

An Engineman with HMS Wallington, George died on 10th of December 1918 at the age of 32.

George was born at Lowestoft on 8 September 1886, a son of Robert and Susannah (Polly) Bryant. He was baptised at Christchurch, Lowestoft, on 29 September 1886, and his family lived at Anguish Street. By 1891 his family were living at 93 Saint Margaret's Road. In 1901 their home was at 'Whiteside', Ipswich Road.

Arthur Edwin Curtis

A Seaman with S.S. Ancona., Arthur died on 28th of May 1917.

Arthur was born at Kessingland on 24 March 1893, a son of James and Jessie Curtis of Kessingland Lowestoft. He was baptised at Saint Edmund's Church, Kessingland, on 25 June 1893. In 1901 his family lived at Elm Cottages, Kessingland. By 1911 they were living at Tramway Terminus, London Road, Pakefield, and Arthur was a herring fisherman. In 1914 they lived at 3 Carlton Terrace, Pakefield. 

Arthur joined the Royal Naval Reserve on 29 December 1914. It seems that he served on Defensively Armed Merchant Ships.

Thomas Bruce Stollery

Thomas Bruce Stollery

A Petty Officer with S.S. Celtic Prince, Thomas died on 8th of August 1918 aged 25.

Thomas was born at Kirkley on 15 December 1892, a son of Thomas and Maggie Stollery. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Kirkley, on 24 October 1894. On 1 June 1897 Thomas joined Kirkley School and his family lived at Lorne Cottages. On 13 June 1898 he joined Cunningham School, and his family lived at Pakefield and in 1899 he returned to Kirkley School, and his family lived at Clement Square. In 1901 his family lived at Westleton, Suffolk. 

S.S. Tyrhaug

Stanley Ellis

A Leading Seaman with S.S. Tyrhaug, Stanley died on 22nd of March 1918 at the age of 26. 

Stanley was born at Tunstall, near Halvergate, Norfolk, on 14 June 1891, a son of James and Mary Ellis. He was baptised at Tunstall on 26 July 1891. By 1901 his family were living at Norwich Road, Stalham, Norfolk. Later his family lived at Brunstead, Stalham.

Benjamin James Smith

A Seaman with S.S. Tyrhaug, Benjamin died on 22nd of March 1918 at the age of 26. 

Benjamin was born at Lowestoft on 11 February 1892, a son of William Henry and Rebecca Smith. He was baptised at Saint John's Church, Lowestoft, on 8 July 1892, and his family lived at 12 Stevens Street. In 1901 their address was 6 Laundry Lane. 

Benjamin attended Hervey Street Infants School and, from 1 February 1901, was a pupil at Saint John's School, Lowestoft.  By 1907 his family were living at 27 Crown Street, Lowestoft, and later they lived at 63 Tonning Street, Lowestoft. 

S.S. Vine Branch.

Richard William Joseph Taylor

A Seaman with S.S. Vine Branch, Richard died on 11th of April 1917 at the age of 21. 

Richard was born at London on 8 April 1896, a son of Richard and Emily Eliza Taylor. Between 6 February 1901 and 25 May 1903 Richard attended Saint Martin-in-the-Fields School, London, and at this time his family lived at the Fire Station, Scotland yard. By 1911 the family had moved to Oulton Broad and lived at 2 Providence Cottages, Commodore Road. By September 1914 they were living at 2 Striving Terrace, Oulton Broad, and later his parents lived at 2 Flegg Villas, Oulton Broad.

Schooner Rosa Harriette

A Seaman with Schooner Rosa Harriette, Charles died on 9th of November 1918 aged 29. 

Charles was born at Kirstead, Norfolk, on 5 April 1889, a son of John Amos and Emily Skeet. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Kirstead, on 26 May 1889. In 1891 his family lived at Kirstead. By 1901 they were living at 9 Nut Lane, Morley Saint Peter, Norfolk.

William John Belton

Formerly a Deck Hand with the Royal Naval Reserve, William John died on 23rd of November 1919 at the age of 25.

William was born at Lowestoft on 15 November 1894, a son of Joseph and Alice Belton. In 1901 his family lived at 58 Reeve Street and by 1911 they were living at 34 Worthing Road and William was working as a fisherman. 

Thomas Ayres Coleman

A Seaman with the Royal Naval Reserve, Thomas died on 14th of January 1918 at the age of 28. 

Thomas was born at Lowestoft on 31 December 1889, a son of Charles Edward and Sarah Coleman. In 1891 Thomas' family lived at 25 Jacob's Street, Lowestoft, and this was his home throughout his life. By 1911 Thomas was working as a fisherman. The 1911 Census shows him as the Forth Hand on the trawler Loch Lomond at Padstow. 

Ernest James Forster

Formerly a Trimmer with the Royal Naval Reserve, Ernest died on 1st of February 1921 at the age of 26. 

Ernest was born at Kessingland on 13 October 1895, a son of James and Harriett Forster. He was baptised at Saint Edmund's Church, Kessingland, on 15 December 1895. In 1901 his family lived 'near High Street, Kessingland'. In 1911 his family were living at Church View, Field Lane, Kessingland, and Ernest worked as a gardener's boy. Later his family lived at Stone Cottage, Fields Lane, Kessingland.

Edward Gouldby

Formerly a Deck Hand with the Royal Naval Reserve, Edward died on 22nd of December 1920 at the age of 57.

Edward was born at Kessingland on 17 June 1863, a son of Edward and Mary Gouldby. He was baptised at Saint Edmund's Church, Kessingland, on 12 July 1863.

Edward married Elizabeth Ann Knights in 1890. In 1891 they lived at Belvedere Place, Kessingland, and by 1901 they were living at The Beach, Kessingland, and Edward worked as a fisherman. Later their home was at High Path, The Beach, Kessingland.

Walter William Harper

A Deck Hand with the Royal Naval Reserve, Walter died on 15th of April 1917 at the age of 29. 

Walter was born at Lowestoft on 18 March 1888, a son of Arthur and Hannah Harper. He was baptised at Christchurch, Lowestoft, on 11 April 1888, and his family lived at Strand Cottages. In 1891 they were living at 54 Whapload Road, and this was still their home in 1901, by which time Walter was working as an errand boy. By 1915 his family lived at 46 Whapload Road, and later at 11 Anguish Street, Lowestoft.

George Robert Richardson

Formerly a Deck Hand with the Royal Naval Reserve, George died on 17th of November 1918 at the age of 55.

George was born at Driffield, Yorkshire, on 2 May 1863, a son of Richard and Mary Richardson. In 1871 his family lived at Haughton Terrace, Hunslet, Leeds. 

William Parkin Smallwood

Formerly an Engineman with the Royal Naval Reserve, William died on 3rd of July 1917 at the age of 41. 

William was born at Elvington, Yorkshire, on 9 March 1876, a son of Maria Smallwood. By 1881 he was living with his mother, siblings, and stepfather, at Hadenham, Norfolk. In 1891 he was working as a farm servant at The Farm House, Shipmeadow, Suffolk. (Note in the 1881 and 1891 Censuses his surname is given as Shulver, which was his mother's surname from 1877 onwards). 

Pelham George Turrell

Formerly a Seaman with the Royal Naval Reserve, Pelham died on 15th of November 1918 at the age of 25.

Pelham was born at Kessingland on 9 July 1893, a son of Henry and Sarah Ann Turrell. He was baptised at Saint Edmund's Church, Kessingland, on 21 April 1901. In 1901 his family lived at The Beach, Kessingland, and by 1911 they were living at Hadleigh Cottages, London Road, Kessingland, and Pelham worked as a fisherman. Later his family lived at Russell Cottages, Kessingland.
