Ernest James Yallop

A Deck Hand with H.M. Trawler Donside, Ernest died on 7th of January 1917 at the age of 25. 

Ernest was born at Lowestoft on 15 April 1891, a son of William George and Margaret Louisa Yallop. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 3 July 1891 and his family lived at 32 Saint Margaret’s Road. In 1901 his family lived at 4 Spurgeon’s Score. In 1911 Ernest worked on the trawler Early Morn.  By 1916 his family were living at 87 Sussex Road, and later they lived at 73 Park Road.

Ernest joined the Royal Naval Reserve on 20 March 1916 and he served with the trawler Donside. 

H.M. Trawler Dorothy Lambert

George Stanley Wright

A Skipper with H.M. Trawler Dorothy Lambert, George died on 22nd of April 1941 at the age of 35. 

George was born at Lowestoft on 14 December 1905, a son of John Farrow and Ethel Elizabeth Wright. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 5 January 1906 and his family lived at 11 Wollaston Road. By 1911 they were living at 99 Oxford Road and in 1921 at 24 Beckham Road. 

H.M. Trawler Dorothy Rose.

An Engineman with H.M. Trawler Dorothy Rose, Albert died on 7th of December 1918 aged 32. 

Albert was born at Lowestoft on 11 December 1886, a son of George and Sarah Moyse. He was baptised at Christ Church, Lowestoft, on 12 January 1887 and his family lived at Rant Score East. By 1901 they were living at 9 Anguish Street, and in 1911 at Glencoe Terrace, 303 Raglan Street.

Arthur Ernest William Howes

A Skipper with H.M. Trawler Ebor Wyke, Arthur died on 2nd of May 1945 at the age of 36. 

Arthur was born at Lowestoft on 7 February 1909, a son of Ernest George and Clara Miranda Howes. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 5 March 1909, and his family lived at 4 Anguish Street. In 1911 his family lived at 3 Saint Margaret's Plain, and by 1939 were living at 67 Arnold Street. 

By 1926 Arthur was working in the merchant navy and was, at one time, a Wireless Watcher. 

In 1938 Arthur married Doris Mary Stannard at Lowestoft. 

H.M. Trawler Elise.

Cecil Robert Sharman

Cecil Robert Sharman

A Seaman with H.M. Trawler Elise., Cecil died on 22nd of September 1918 at the age of 22. 

Cecil was born at Mutford on 1 April 1896, a son of Arthur and Alice Sharman. He was baptised at Saint Andrew's Church, Mutford, on 1 May 1898. In 1901 his family lived at Hulver Road, Mutford, and this was still the family address in 1911.

 The 1911 Census shows William working as a cow boy.

Samuel Isaac Marjoram

An Engineman with H.M. Trawler Eros. Samuel died on 5th of September 1917 at the age of 31. 

Samuel was born at Kessingland on 20 September 1885, a son of Samuel and Elizabeth Marjoram. He was baptised at Saint Edmund's Church, Kessingland, on 29 November 1885. In 1891 His family lived at Church Road, Kessingland, and by 1901 at Prospect Cottages, Kessingland, and Samuel was a shoemaker. 

H.M. Trawler Falstaff

Benjamin Robert Pichers

An Engineman with H.M. Trawler Falstaff, Benjamin died on 18th of December 1918 at the age of 26.

Benjamin was born at Oulton on 10 August 1892, a son of John and Ellen Pitchers. He was baptised at Saint Michael’s Church, Oulton, on 18 September 1892. In 1901 his family lived at Moyse Road, Oulton. In 1911 the family home was at 2 Rock Road, Rock Estate, Oulton. 

H.M. Trawler Fir

A Skipper with H.M. Trawler Fir, Royal died on 3rd of December 1942 at the age of 42. 

Royal was born at Lowestoft on 26 November 1900, a son of Charles and Margaret Page. He was baptised at Saint John's Church, Lowestoft, on 11 October 1901, and his family lived at 71 Tonning Street. By 1911 his family were living at 27 Ontario Road, and by 1921 at 10 May Road. Later his parents lived at 2 Simnetts Cottage, Saint Johns Road, Lowestoft.

H.M. Trawler Gabir

James Jenner

A Deck Hand with H.M. Trawler Gabir, James died on 24th of May 1918 at the age of 39. 

James was born at Lowestoft on 12 November 1879, a son of James and Margaret Jenner. This is confirmed by his baptismal record, however his Royal Naval Reserve service record gives his date of birth as 11 October 1876. He was baptised at Christ Church, Lowestoft, on 20 January 1880, and his family lived at 1 Hungary Terrace (sic), The Beach, Lowestoft. In 1881 they lived at 1 Spurgeon Score. In 1901 his family lived at 14 Raglan Street. 

Frederick Charles Sayer

A Skipper with H.M. Trawler Gabir, Frederick died on 24th of May 1918 at the age of 34. 

Frederick was born at Carlton Colville on 19 March 1884, a son of Charles and Alice Sayer. His family has not been traced in the 1891 Census, but in 1901 they were living at 7 Victoria Road, Carlton Colville, and Frederick, like his father, was a wherryman. 

H.M. Trawler Gambri

Harry George Nunn

A Deck Hand with H.M. Trawler Gambri, Harry died on 18th of January 1918 at the age of 27. 

Harry was born at Oulton Broad on 25 February 1891, a son of Charles and Georgianna Nunn. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Carlton Colville, on 27 September 1894 and his family lived at Carlton Colville. In 1901 his family lived at Bell Road, Calton Colville. In 1911 Harry was working as a drifter fisherman and lived with sister Ellen Garrod and her husband Edward at 84 Stanford Street.

H.M. Trawler George Borthwick

Joseph William Gosling

A Deck Hand with H.M. Trawler George Borthwick, Joseph died on 24th of December 1918 aged 25. 

Joseph was born at Pakefield on 7 April 1895, a son of Thomas George and Caroline Mary Ann Gosling. In 1901 Joseph, and his parents, were resident at the Union Workhouse, Oulton. His mother died in 1905 and his father in 1908. On 26 October 1908 he became a pupil at Saint Margaret’s School and at the time he lived with his brother Henry at 20 Saint Margaret’s Road. 

H.M. Trawler Glenprosen

Bertie Edward Stebbings

A Trimmer with H.M. Trawler Glenprosen, Bertie died on 3rd of November 1916 at the age of 17. 

Bertie was born at Barsham, near Beccles, on 17 March 1899, a son of Samuel and Emma Eliza Stebbings. In 1901 his family lived at The Cottage, Roos Hall, Barsham. In 1911 his family lived at Oulton Street, Oulton. Later their home was at 8 Meadow Cottages, Oulton, Lowestoft. 

Bertie joined the Royal Naval Reserve on 14 July 1915, claiming to be two years older than he actually was. He served on the trawler Glenprosen.

H.M. Trawler Grouse.

William Edward Cook

A Seaman with H.M. Trawler Grouse., William died on 26th of May 1917 at the age of 21. 

William was born at Lowestoft on 11 July 1895, a son of William James and Edith Jane Cook. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church on 11 August 1895, and his family lived at 28 Spurgeon Street. In 1901 his family lived at Spurgeon Street. By 1915 his family were living at 1 Barcham Street, The Beach, Lowestoft, and later at 70 The Hemplands.

In 1911 William worked on the trawler Early Morn.

H.M. Trawler Hirose.

Harry David Rose

An Engineman with H.M. Trawler Hirose, Harry died on 29th of June 1916 at the age of 36. 

Harry was born at Lowestoft on 15 July 1879, a son of Charles and Eliza Rose. In 1881 his family lived at 34 Raglan Street, and, by 1891, they were living at 59 Raglan Street. 

On 12 January 1902 Harry married Kate Ann Brown at Lowestoft. In 1911 they lived at 4 Kendal Road, Kirkley, and Harry was a steam crane driver for a coal merchant. 

Harry joined the Royal Naval Reserve on 12 May 1916 and he served with the trawler Hirose.

A Deck Hand with H.M. Trawler James Green, William died on 11th of July 1918 at the age of 42.

H.M. Trawler Jessie Nutten.

Oscar Pitcher

Oscar John Pitcher

A Skipper with H.M. Trawler Jessie Nutten, Oscar died on 4th of September 1916 at the age of 32. 

Oscar was born at Oulton Broad on 26 February 1884, a son of John and Laura Pitcher. From 14 March 1887 Oscar attended Cunningham School. In 1891 his family lived at 94 Pakefield Street, Kirkley. 

In 1901 Oscar was the fourth hand on the trawler Admiral, LT 349, at Pembroke Dock. Oscar was awarded his certificate of competency as a skipper in 1904. 

H.M. Trawler John Pascoe.

Frederick Robert Sexbury

A Boy Cook with H.M. Trawler John Pascoe, Frederick died on 28th of October 1917 at the age of 17. 

Frederick was born at Flixton on 11 March 1900, a son of Robert and Mary Ann Sexbury. In 1901 his family lived at The Street, Flixton. By 1911 they were living at Saint Mary’s Terrace, Flixton Road, Bungay. Later his parents lived at 23 Ipswich Road, Lowestoft, then 62 High Street, and then 44 Princes Road. 

From 8 April 1907 to 18 April 1913 Robert was a pupil at Bungay Boys School. 

H.M. Trawler Kaphreda.

Ernest George Raven

A Deck Hand with H.M. Trawler Kaphreda., Ernest died on 8th of June 1916 at the age of 50. 

Ernest was born at Wrentham on 16 April 1866, a son of William and Sarah Raven. He was baptised at Wrentham on 15 May 1866. In 1871 his family lived at Southwold Road, Wrentham. In 1881 they lived at Guyall (sic) Lane, Wrentham, and Ernest was an agricultural labourer. By 1891 they were living at High Street, Wrentham, and Ernest was a miller's labourer. 

H.M. Trawler Kirkland

Herbert Cecil Stevenson

An Engineman with H.M. Trawler Kirkland, Herbert died on 20th of August 1917 at the age of 27. 

Herbert was born at Lowestoft on 31 October 1888, a son of George William and Sarah Stevenson. In 1891 his family lived at Maida Cottage, Burton Street, and in 1901 at 4 Rotterdam Road. By 1911 the family had moved to 3 Primrose Road, Thorpe Hamlet, Norwich, and Herbert worked as a general labourer. Also living at 3 Primrose Road was Harriet Sexton who was the house keeper: Harriet was the mother of Dora Sexton.

Raymond Ambrose Thacker

An Engineman with H.M. Trawler Loch Ard, Raymond died on 10th of September 1917 at the age of 29. 

Raymond was born at Kessingland on 11 April 1888, a son of John and Emily Thacker. He was baptised at Saint Edmund’s Church, Kessingland, on 25 November 1888. In 1891 his family lived at Elm Cottages, London Road, Kessingland. His mother died in 1896 and his father remarried in 1898. By 1911 his father was living at 11 Elm Cottages, Kessingland.  

H.M. Trawler Loch Doon

George Henry Alexander Thompson

A Skipper with H.M. Trawler Lock Doon, George died on 25 December 1939 at the age of 31.

George was born at Kessingland on 5 September 1908, a son of Alexander John and Jane Elizabeth Thompson. In 1911 his family lived at 3 Lakenham Cottages, Beach Street, Pakefield, and, by 1921 they were living at 10 Lovewell Road and this was still the family home in 1939. 

George was awarded his Certificate of Competency as a Skipper in 1931. From 29 September 1931 to 27 February 1932, when he was invalided, George served with the Royal Naval Reserve as a Second Hand.  

H.M. Trawler Lucknow.

Charles Henry Crews

A Second Hand with H.M. Trawler Lucknow, Charles died on 18th of May 1917 at the age of 25. 

Charles was born at Lowestoft on 1 May 1892, a son of Charles Henry and Elizabeth Crews. He was baptised at Saint John’s Church, Lowestoft, on 20 May 1892 and his family lived at 4 Till Road. Charles attended Saint John’s Infant School and then, from 5 February 1900 Saint John’s School. In 1901 his family lived at 69 Norwich Road. By 1911 his family were living at 31 Selby Street.

Charles was awarded his certificate of competency as a second hand in 1914.

Thomas Peter Armes

A Second Hand with H.M. Trawler Malta., Thomas died on 1st of September 1915 at the age of 36.

Thomas was born at Lowestoft on 18 March 1879, a son of Thomas Peter and Mary Ann Armes. In 1881 his family lived at 6 Spurgeon's Score, Lowestoft. By 1891 Thomas' father had died and his mother married James Hales. The family lived at 2 Providence Place, Whapload Road.

Frank Arthur Hall

Frank Arthur Hall

A Deck Hand with H.M. Trawler Mary. Frank died on 5th of November 1914 at the age of 29. 

Frank was born at Lowestoft on 19 February 1886, a son of George Edwin (Jimmie) and Jessie Hall. In 1891 his family lived at 11 Cumberland Road, Lowestoft. By 1901 his father had died and he lived at 4 Princes Road, as did his mother, and Frank was a cooper's apprentice. 

H.M. Trawler Morococala.

Clifford Edward Rose Hall

A Deck Hand with H.M. Trawler Morococala, Clifford died on 19th of November 1917 at the age of 26. 

Clifford was born at Lowestoft on 22 March 1891, a son of George and Mary Ann Hall. He was baptised at Christ Church, Lowestoft, on 15 April 1891, and his family lived at Rant Score East. By 1901 they were living at 88 Oxford Road, and in 1911 at 1 Royal Avenue. Later they lived at 73 Kimberley Road. 

H.M. Trawler Myrtle

William Garwood Cleveland

A Chief Skipper with H.M. Trawler Myrtle, William died on 14 June 1940, aged 46.

William was born at Lowestoft on 25 April 1894, a son of James and Mary Cleveland. He was baptised at Saint John’s Church on 25 May 1894 and his family lived at 7 Wollaston Road. In 1901 his family lived at Laundry Lane. By 1911 his father had died, and his family lived at 4 Strand Street. Later they lived at 3 Spurgeon Street. By the 1950s William’s mother lived at 273 Saint Peter’s Street. 

William Henry Winter

A Skipper with H.M. Trawler Myrtle, William died on 14 June 1940, aged 41.

William was born at Southwold, Suffolk, on 30 October 1898, a son of Harry and Emily Winter. He was baptised at Saint Edmund’s Church, Southwold, on 4 December 1898. In 1911 his family lived at 7 Primrose Alley, Southwold, and by 1915 William was living at 12 Oulton Street, Oulton, Lowestoft. 

H.M. Trawler New Comet

Clifford Blyth

A Deck Hand with H.M. Trawler New Comet. Clifford died on 20th of January 1917 at the age of 32. 

Clifford was born at Lowestoft in  on 4 April 1885, a son of John Joseph and Jane Anne (Annie/Anna) Blyth. He was baptised at Christchurch, Lowestoft, on 29 April 1885 and his family lived at 3 Strand Cottages. By 1891 his father had died and his family lived at Anguish Street. 

Robert Nathaniel Burch

A Deck Hand with H.M. Trawler New Comet. Robert died on 20th of January 1917 at the age of 30.

Robert was born at Lowestoft on 14 February 1886, a son of Robert Edward and Charlotte Patience Burch. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 6 June 1886. His family lived at 37 Alma Road, Lowestoft. Robert worked as a fisherman. 

Robert joined the Royal Naval Reserve on 19 June 1916. He was killed when the trawler New Comet was blown up by a mine off Orfordness.

Robert's father, also named Robert, served with the Royal Naval Reserve, and died in 1914. 

Arthur Frederick Clarke

A Second Hand with H.M. Trawler New Comet, Arthur died on 20th of January 1917 at the age of 38. 

Arthur was born at Pakefield, Lowestoft on 28 September 1878, a son of Frederick and Mary Clarke. He was baptised at All Saints' Church, Pakefield, on 19 September 1880 and his family lived at Pakefield. In 1881 their home was at 2 Squires Cottages, Carlton Road, Pakefield. In 1891 their address was 2 Carlton Road, Pakefield. 

Joseph Henry Martin

Joseph Henry Martin

A Deck Hand, Joseph died of wounds on 20th January 1917, at the age of 36.

Joseph was born at Lowestoft on 22nd January 1881 and was a son of Samuel and Louisa Martin of 32 Pakefield Street, Kirkley. Joseph was a smacksman/fisherman. 

Joseph married Susannah Margaret Frances at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 1st September 1901. They lived at 29 Jacob's Street, Lowestoft, and later at 30 Jacob's Street. 

Joseph enrolled in the Royal Naval Reserve on 14 June 1915.

H.M. Trawler Okino

Ernest Alexander Fisher

A Second Hand with H.M. Trawler Okino, Ernest died on 8th of March 1915 at the age of 28.

Ernest was born at Pakefield on 23 November 1887, a son of George Edward and Phoebe Elizabeth Fisher. He was baptised at All Saints' Church, Pakefield, on 12 February 1888. In 1891 his family lived at School Cottages, 4 Pakefield Street, Lowestoft, and in 1901 they were still living at Pakefield Street. 

H.M. Trawler Orfasy

Alexander Alfred Soanes

A Skipper with H.M. Trawler Orfasy, Alexander died on 22nd of October 1943 at the age of 35.

Alexander was born at Beccles on 30 August 1907, a son of Charles Benjamin and Harriet Mary Soanes. By 1911 his family were living at 4 Pretoria Terrace, Hall Road, Oulton Broad. In 1921 they lived at Waveney Cottages, Aldeby. 

H.M. Trawler Princess Beatrice

Charles Copeland

Charles Henry Copeland

A Second Hand with H. M. trawler Princess Beatrice. Charles died on 5th October 1914 at the age of 30. 

Charles was born at London on 29 October 1883, a son of Charles Henry Copeland. 

Charles married Annie Louisa Swan Pearson at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 13 September 1905. At that time he was a fisherman living at 249 Raglan Street, Lowestoft. By 1911 Charles and Annie were living at 52 Haward Street and later at 57 Bevan Street, Lowestoft. 

Charles had been awarded his Certificate of Competency as a Second Hand in 1908.  

Walter Ernest Kent

Walter Ernest Kent

A Deck Hand with H.M. Trawler Princess Beatrice. Walter died on 5th of October 1914 at the age of 22. 

Walter was born at Lowestoft on 22 May 1892, a son of William and Mary Ann Kent. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 3 July 1892, and his family lived at 75 Seago Street and this was their home in 1901. Later they lived at 44 Rotterdam Road,  Lowestoft.

In 1911 Walter was the Fourth Hand on the trawler Young Percy at Padstow.  

H.M. Trawler Remarko.

Arthur Lancelot Redgrave

An Engineman with H.M. Trawler Remarko, Arthur died on 3rd of December 1916 at the age of 29. 

Arthur was born at Lowestoft on 3 May 1886, a son of Samuel and Mary Ann Redgrave. He was baptised at Christchurch, Lowestoft, on 7 July 1886, and his family lived at Lighthouse Hill. In 1901 his family lived at 5 Factory Court, Factory Street. Later his family lived at 2 Factory Street. 

From around 1908 Arthur lived with Hilda Lawrence at 27 Mariners Street. In 1915 they lived at 27 Factory Street and, later, Hilda lived at 83 Seago Street. Hilda was Arthur’s ‘unmarried wife’.

A Deck Hand with H.M. Trawler Remindo, Henry died on 2nd of February 1918 at the age of 22. 

H.M. Trawler Resono

Ernest James Beamish

A Trimmer with H.M. Trawler Resono, Ernest died on 26th of December 1915 at the age of 33. 

Ernest was born at Kessingland on 9 July 1882, a son of Alfred and Mary Ann Beamish. In 1891 his family lived at Elms Cottages, London Road, Kessingland, and this was still their address in 1901. By 1896 Ernest was working as a ‘fisher lad’.

Herbert James Woolnough

A Skipper with H.M. Trawler Royalo, Herbert died on 23rd of September 1916 at the age of 42. 

Herbert was born at Kessingland on 30 January 1874, a son of William Henry and Lucy Mary Woolnough. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Kirkley, on 5 April 1874. In 1881 his family lived at 2 Claremont Road and in 1891 at 4 Westbourne Terrace. Later his parents lived at 6 Lorne Road.
