William Parkin Smallwood
Formerly an Engineman with the Royal Naval Reserve, William died on 3rd of July 1917 at the age of 41.
William was born at Elvington, Yorkshire, on 9 March 1876, a son of Maria Smallwood. By 1881 he was living with his mother, siblings, and stepfather, at Hadenham, Norfolk. In 1891 he was working as a farm servant at The Farm House, Shipmeadow, Suffolk. (Note in the 1881 and 1891 Censuses his surname is given as Shulver, which was his mother's surname from 1877 onwards).
William married Emma Ellen May Freestone at Beccles on 23 December 1900. In 1901 they lived at Ballygate Street, Beccles. By 1911 their home was at 50 Queens Road, Lowestoft. In 1911 William worked as the engineer on the trawler Forbay II and the Census shows him at Newlyn Harbour, Cornwall.
William joined the Royal Naval Reserve on 20 April 1915. From 20 April 1915 to 18 April 1917 William served as the Engineman on the trawler Silvery Harvest. He was admitted to the Royal Naval Hospital Plymouth and found to have carcinoma of the stomach. This condition was deemed not to be attributable to his war service, but aggravated by it. He received an immediate medical discharge from the service. William was awarded the Silver War Badge.
