James Alfred Ashby

A Third Hand with sailing Trawler Chrysolite (Lowestoft), James died on 4th of July 1917 at the age of 31. 

James was born at Oulton on 4 January 1884, a son of Edward and Emma Ashby. He was baptised at Saint Michael’s Church, Oulton, on 3 February 1884 and his family lived at Oulton. In 1891 his family lived at Yarmouth Road, Oulton. By 1901 they were living at Woods Loke and James was a fisherman.  

William Edward Collins

A Cook with sailing trawler Chrysolite (Lowestoft), William died on 4th of July 1917 at the age of 15. 

William was born at Lowestoft on 11 January 1902, a son of Arthur and Johanna Collins. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 5 February 1902 and his family lived at 11 Factory Street. In 1911 their home was at 37 Beckham Road. Later Johanna lived at 23 Wilde Street, Lowestoft. She remarried in 1920.  

On 4 July 1917 the Chrysolite was fishing four nautical miles off Haisbro Lightship. The trawler struck a mine and sank. Five of the crew were killed. 

Frederick George Lumsdaine

A Deck Hand with sailing trawler Chrysolite (Lowestoft), Frederick died on 4th of July 1917 at the age of 18. 

Frederick was born at Lowestoft in 1898, a son of Robert Willis and Margaret Ellen Lumsdaine. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 25 November 1898 and his family lived at The Beach. His parents married in 1900 and his younger half-siblings all had the surname Willis. In 1901 his family lived at 3 Lincoln’s Buildings, The Beach. By 1911 his family were living at 1 Lincoln’s Buildings, Whapload Road, and later at 194 Clapham Road.

Olley Rudd

A Mate with sailing trawler Chrysolite (Lowestoft), Olley died on 4th of July 1917 at the age of 59. 

Olley was born at Blundeston in 1858, a son of William and Mary Ann Rudd (formerly Goffin). He was baptised at Saint Mary’s Church, Blundeston, on 21 March 1858. In 1861 his family lived at Lound Road, Blundeston, and this was still their address in 1871.

On 29 December 1880 Olley married Laura Amelia Grice at Saint Mary’s Church, Blundeston. Olley was a fisherman and Laura a servant and they both lived at Blundeston. In Olley worked trawler Londesborough at Lowestoft.   

Thomas John Smith

A Skipper with sailing trawler Chrysolite, Thomas died on 4th of July 1917 at the age of 44. 

Thomas was born at Corton on 21 December 1872, a son of Samuel and Betsy Smith. He was baptised at Saint Bartholomew’s Church, Corton, on 5 January 1873. In 1881 his family lived at High Street, Corton. In 1891 they were living at 31 Cambridge Road and Thomas was a mariner. 

In 1898 Thomas married Ellen Margaret Day. In 1901 they lived at 9 Melbourne Road and Thomas was a fisherman. By 1911 their home was at 96 Morton Road.

Drifter Fraternal (Lowestoft)

James Cooper

A Second Hand with Drifter Fraternal (Lowestoft). James died on 3rd of November 1914 at the age of 42. 

James was born at Lowestoft in 1868. In 1871 he lived with his grandmother, Harriet Cooper, at Crowe's Buildings, 2 Eastern Square, Lowestoft, and in 1881, he was still living with his grandparents, at Crowe's Buildings. 

William Studd

A Fisherman with Drifter Fraternal (Lowestoft), William died on 3rd of November 1914 at the age of 37. 

William was born at Kessingland in 1877 a son of George and Mary Ann Studd. In 1881 his family lived at The Street, Kessingland. By 1911 their home was at 4 Providence Place, London Road, Kessingland, and William worked as a fisherman.

Drifter Will and Maggie (Lowestoft)

Harry Flowers

A Fisherman with Drifter Will and Maggie (Lowestoft), Harry died on 3rd of November 1914 at the age of 48.

Harry was born at Kirkley in 1866, a son of William and Emily Flowers. In 1871 his family lived at 5 The Street, Kirkley. By 1881 they were living at Carlton Colville.  

George Alfred Gower

A Skipper with the drifter 'Will and Maggie', George died on 3 November 1914 at the age of 39. 

George was born at Flixton, near Lowestoft, in 1875, a son of Isaac and Mary Ann Gower. In 1881 his family lived at Gisleham. By 1891 they were living at 83 Albert Road, Great Yarmouth, and George worked as a labourer.

On 28 December 1896 George married Elizabeth Abigail Mobbs at Saint Peter's Church, Carlton Colville. They both lived at Carlton Colville and George was a fisherman. In 1901 they lived at 21 Victoria Road, Carlton Colville. 

Wilfred George Gower

A Fisherman with the drifter 'Will and Maggie', Wilfred died on 3 November 1914 at the age of 17.

Wilfred was born at Carlton Colville in 1897, a son of George Alfred and Elizabeth Abigail Gower. In 1901 his family lived at 21 Victoria Road, Carlton Colville. By 1914 they had a home at Beccles Road, Carlton Colville. 

William Henry Mower

A Deck Hand with Drifter Will and Maggie (Lowestoft). William died on 3rd of November 1914 at the age of 23.

William was born at Carlton Colville in 1891, a son of Horace and Elizabeth Ann Mower. He was baptised at Saint Peter's Church, Carlton Colville, on 25 October 1891. In 1901 his family lived at Morse's Cottages, Carlton Colville. In 1911 they lived at Crown Cottages, Carlton Colville, and William worked as a fisherman on a drifter. 

Frank Edward Newrick

A Fisherman with Drifter Will and Maggie (Lowestoft), Frank died on 3rd of November 1914 at the age of 17. 

Frank was born at Carlton Colville in 1897, a son of George and Griselda Newrick. Frank was baptised at Saint Peter's Church, Carlton Colville, on 12 September 1897. In 1901 his family lived at 25 South Elmham Terrace. In 1911 Frank lived with his sister, Emma Fisher, at South Elmham Terrace.

Thomas John Tucker Claxton

A Cook with Fishing Vessel Boy Jack (Lowestoft), Thomas died on 26th of July 1918 at the age of 16. 

Thomas was born at Lowestoft in 1902, a son of Thomas and Jessie Claxton. In 1911 his family lived at 31 Kent Road. Later his parents lived at 17 Avondale Road. 

In 1918 Thomas was the Cook on the trawler Boy Jack. The following report, from The Illustrated Police News, 1 August 1918, page 2 (with additional details from the Huddersfield Daily Examiner, 29 July 1918, page 1), gives an account of what happened to the Boy Jack.

Thomas Frederick Crouchen

A Mate with Fishing Vessel Boy Jack (Lowestoft), Thomas died on 26th of July 1918 at the age of 38. 

Thomas was born at Blundeston on 8 August 1879, a son of John Howes and Hannah Maria Crouchen. He was baptised at Saint Mary’s Church, Blundeston, on 5 October 1879. In 1881 his family lived at High Street, Blundeston, and this was still their address in 1891. In 1893 Thomas began an apprenticeship as a fisherman with his father. This was cancelled in 1896. In 1901 his family lived at 10 Melbourne Road, Lowestoft, and Thomas was a fisherman. 

Frederick Albert Simons

A Deck Hand with Fishing Vessel Boy Jack (Lowestoft), Frederick died on 26th of July 1918 at the age of 16. 

Frederick was born at Lowestoft on 1 August 1901, a son of Frederick John and Emma Simons. Frederick attended Saint Andrews School and, on 24 January 1910, he became a pupil at Saint John’s School. In 1911 his family lived at 48 Haward Street, and later at 69 Queens Road. 

Fishing Vessel Kincorth (Aberdeen)

George William Henry Blowers

A Deck Hand with Fishing Vessel Kincorth (Aberdeen), George died on 10 December 1941 at the age of 38 years.

George was born at Pakefield on 8 May 1903, a son of William and Ellen Blowers. George’s father died four months before George’s birth in the loss of the trawler Free Lance. In 1909 George’s mother married John Vincent. In 1911 his family lived at 46 Pakefield Street. In 1921 George’s family lived at 19 Saint Margaret’s Road, Pakefield, and George worked as Colby’s Shipyard, Oulton Broad. 

Arthur William Jeffries

A Chief Engineer with Fishing Vessel Kincorth (Aberdeen), Arthur died on 10th of December 1941 at the age of 60. 

Arthur was born at Kirkley in 1881, a son of Robert Arthur and Mary Ann Jeffries. In 1881 his family lived at East Side, 3 Saint George’s Road, Kirkley, and in 1891 at 1 Windsor Road. By 1901 their home was at 10 Windsor Road and Arthur worked as a blacksmith.

James Wilson

James William Wilson

A Cook with Fishing Vessel Research (Lowestoft), James died on 17th of May 1916 at the age of 62.

James was born at Lowestoft on 16 April 1853, a son of John and Mary Ann Wilson. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 1 May 1853. In 1861 his family lived at Infirmary Plain, Lowestoft. By 1871 James' family were living at 3 Turner's Court, Factory Lane, Lowestoft, and James was a scavenger. In 1881 James lived with his sister, Hannah Balls, and her husband, Alfred, at 9 The Hemplands, Lowestoft, and James worked as a general labourer.

James Ernest Winfield

A Deck Hand with Fishing Vessel S.D.J. (Lowestoft), James died on 11 May 1947, aged 29.

James was born at Newark, Peterborough, in 1918, a son of William and Maria Winfield. In 1921 his family lived at New Road, Newark, Peterborough. In 1939 his family lived at Wadenhoe, near Oundle.

On 26 December 1940 James married Pearl Elizabeth Curtis at All Saints’ Church, Pakefield. James was a blacksmith based at Christchurch Barracks, Hampshire, and Pearl lived at 14 Nelson Terrace. 

Fishing Vessel Sulby (Fleetwood)

Russell Francis Fisher

A Deck Hand with Fishing Vessel Sulby (Fleetwood), Russell died on 21st of November 1939 at the age of 25. 

Russell was born at Lowestoft on 10 February 1914, a son of Randal George Fisher and of Elsie May Fisher. He was baptised at Saint Peter's Church, Kirkley, and his family lived at 74 Saint Georges Road and this was their home for the rest of his life.

In 1939 Russell lodged at 37 Oak Street, Fleetwood, and he worked as a fisherman.

Fishing Vessel Vanguard (Lowestoft)

Henry Alger

A Skipper, with the Fishing Vessel Vanguard (Lowestoft) Henry died on 24 October 1917, at the age of 68.

Henry was born at Geldeston in 1849, a son of James and Jemima Alger. He weas baptised at Geldeston Parish Church on 18 November 1849. In 1851 his family lived 'On Dam' at Geldeston and in 1861 they lived 'Near Common' at Geldeston.

On 13 October 1870 Henry married Charlotte Baldry at Geldeston. They both lived at Geldeston and Henry was a fisherman. The 1871 Census shows Henry working on the Pride of Shannon at Lowestoft.

Edward August Blommaert

A Third Hand with Fishing Vessel Vanguard (Lowestoft), Edward died on 24th of October 1917 at the age of 36.

His given name in Belgium was Eduardus Gustavus Blommaert. 

Edward was born at Ostend, Belgium, on 8 October 1886, a son of Basilius and Paulina Blommaert. Edward married Malvina Maria Vanloo some time before 1908. It seems that they moved to Britain after the beginning of the First World War and in 1916 Malvina was living at Edmonton, London. Later she lived at 32 Kimberly Road, Lowestoft. 

Redan Sydney Jeffries

A Cook with Fishing Vessel Vanguard (Lowestoft), Redan died on 24th of October 1917 at the age of 14. 

Redan was born at Lowestoft in 1903, a son of Redan Welton and Edith Maud Jeffries. In 1911 his family lived at 97 Bevan Street and later at 26 Haward Street, Lowestoft. 

On the morning of 24 October 1917 the trawler Vanguard (LT 722) sailed from Lowestoft and went north apparently to fish off Happisburgh. The trawler was never seen again and it was assumed the trawler was lost through enemy action.  

Sidney Norman Kerrison

A Second Hand with Fishing Vessel Vanguard (Lowestoft), Sidney died on 24th of October 1917 at the age of 33.

Sidney was born at Norwich on 20 November 1884, a son of John and Martha E. Kerrison. In 1891 his family lived at (16) Lion and Castle Yard, Norwich. From 23 March 1897 Sidney attended Red House Farm School, Buxton, Norfolk. He spent some time working at Holly Farm, Tivetshall Saint Mary, before moving to Willow Farm, Framington. By mid-1903 he was working at sea.

Henry Charles Shimmon

A Deck Hand with Fishing Vessel Vanguard (Lowestoft), died on 24th of October 1917 at the age of 53. 

Henry was born at Great Yarmouth on 6 July 1864, a son of Henry Charles and Susan Shimmon. He was baptised at Saint Nicholas' Church, Great Yarmouth, on 10 January 1869. In 1871 his family lived at Row 140, Great Yarmouth. In 1881 Henry was living at Victoria Road, Southwold, with his uncle and aunt, John and Mary Welton, and Henry worked as a twine spinner.

Bertie Edward Hunt

A Mate with Fishing Vessel Westfield (Milford Haven), Bertie died on 6th of July 1941 at the age of 46.

Bertie was born at Lowestoft on 8 June 1895, a son of Ephraim and Elizabeth Frances Hunt. He was baptised at Christchurch, Lowestoft, on 3 July 1895, and his family lived at 5 Rant Score East, Lowestoft, which was still their home in 1901. By 1911 the family were living at 1 Salter Street, Whapload Road, Lowestoft. 

Sailing Trawler Boy Percy (Lowestoft)

William Reginald Bacon

A Skipper with Sailing Trawler 'Boy Percy', William died on 13th of May 1916 at the age of 53. 

William was born at Hasketon, Woodbridge, in 1862, a son of James and Mary Bacon. 

By 1881 William's mother had died and lodged, with his father and brother, 'near The Cliff, Corton', with Samuel and Susannah Freeman, his uncle and aunt. 

In late 1883 William married Martha Ellen Freeman at Corton. In 1891 they lived at Mill Lane, Corton, and Mill Lane was still their address in 1901. In 1911 their address was Browns Cottages, Mill Lane, Corton.

Edward Clarke

A Mate with Sailing Trawler Boy Percy (Lowestoft). Edward died on 13th of May 1916 at the age of 35. 

Edward was born at Gillingham in 1880, a son of Charles and Esther Clarke. In 1881 his family lived at Gillingham and by 1891 they were living at Flixton Road, Blundeston. By 1901 they were living at 34 Stevens Street, Lowestoft, and this was still their home in 1911. 

Lancelot Leonard Freeman

A Fourth Hand with Sailing Trawler Boy Percy (Lowestoft). Lancelot died on 13th of May 1916 at the age of 31.

Lancelot was born at Corton in 1884, a son of Martha Ellen Freeman. In 1891 his family lived at High Street, Corton. In 1901 they lived at 6 Colman Cottages, The Street, Hopton, and Lancelot worked as a farm labourer. 

In 1915 Lancelot married Evelyn Mary Bacon at Corton. Evelyn was a daughter of William and Martha Bacon and William Bacon was the Skipper of the Boy Percy. They lived at 2 Mill Hook Cottage Corton Lowestoft.

Edward John Sturman

A Third Hand with Sailing Trawler Boy Percy (Lowestoft). Edward died on 13th of May 1916 at the age of 37. 

Edward was born at Blundeston in 1880, a son of Edward and Elizabeth Sturman. In 1881 his family lived at High Street, Blundeston. By 1891 they were living at 1 Clement Square, Kirkley, and in 1901 at 26 Lovewell Road, and later at 62, then 60, Lovewell Road. 

In 1901 Edward was working as a Seaman on the trawler Sarah and Edward.

Robert Henry Richard Sturman

A Cook with Sailing Trawler Boy Percy (Lowestoft). Robert died on 13th of May 1916 at the age of 17. 

Robert was born at Corton in 1898, a son of Harry Alfred and Emily Alice Sturman. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 18 November 1898 and his family lived at 27 Arnold Street. In 1901 they lived at 40 Mariners Street. By 1911 Robert's father had died and his family lived at 4 Bixley Place, Kirkley. Later his mother lived at 3 Sparhams Buildings, Saint Peter's Street, Lowestoft.

Sailing Trawler Guide (Lowestoft)

George Aldred

A Third Hand with Sailing Trawler Guide (Lowestoft), George died on 23rd of February 1916 at the age of 54.

George was born at Wenhaston in 1862, a son of Henry and Mary Ann Aldred. He was baptised at Wenhaston on 9 March 1862. In 1871 his family lived at (56) Blackheath, Wenhaston. 

By 1880 George was a fisherman. In 1881 he worked on the Lowestoft trawler Mary Louisa, and in 1881 on the trawler Unity. 

Frederick William Blowers

A Skipper with Sailing Trawler Guide (Lowestoft), Frederick died on 23rd of February 1916 at the age of 56.

Frederick was born at Covehithe in 1859, a son of Robert and Elizabeth (Betsey) Blowers. He was baptised at Saint Michael's Church, Benacre, on 13 March 1859. In 1861 his family lived at Covehithe. By 1871 Frederick's father had died and his mother remarried and the family still lived at Covehithe.

George Edward Shiplee

A Second Hand, George died on 23rd February 1916 at the age of 49.

George was born at Southwold. He was baptised at Saint Edmund's Church, Southwold, on 4 March 1866, a son of George and Mary Shiplee. In 1871 his family lived at North Green, Southwold, and by 1881 were living at Southwold Road, Wrentham. 

George became a fisherman. 

George Shiplee

A Second Hand, George died on 23rd February 1916 at the age of 16.

George was born at Lowestoft, a son of George Edward and Mary Shiplee.  

In 1901 his family lived at 6 Fir Lane, Lowestoft, and by 1911 at 5 Sterry's Cottages, London Road, Pakefield.

Eventually his mother lived at 2 The Prairie, Lowestoft, before moving to Beccles and then Welling, Kent. 

George's brother Gordon served in the Royal Naval Reserve, on H.M.S. Majestic, and died of wounds in 1915

William Lionel Thompson

A Fourth Hand with the trawler Guide, William died on 23rd February 1916 at the age of 15.

William was born at Pakefield on 24 September 1900, a son of Walter William and Agnes Emily Thompson. He was baptised at All Saints' and Saint Margaret's Church, Pakefield, on 11 November 1900. William's family lived at 1 Florence Road, Pakefield, and this was still their home in 1911. 

From 9 May 1904 William attended Cunningham Infants School. 

During the First World War, William served as the Fourth Hand on the Lowestoft based trawler 'Guide'.

James Frederick Adams

A Skipper with Sailing Trawler Loch Fyne (Lowestoft), James died on 6th of September 1915. 

James was born at Lowestoft in 1869, a son of William and Susan(na) Adams. He was baptised at All Saints' Church, Pakefield, on 25 July 1869, and his family lived at Pakefield. In 1871 their address was Church Street, Pakefield, and by 1881 they were living at 4 Mickelburgh's Cottages, Pakefield.  

George Douglas Brown

A Second Hand with Sailing Trawler Loch Fyne (Lowestoft), George died on 6th of September 1915. 

George was born at Lowestoft on 17 November 1878, a son of William and Elizabeth Brown. He was baptised at Saint John's Church, Lowestoft, on 20 March 1889. In 1881 his family lived at 44 Stevens Street, Lowestoft, and by 1891 they were living at 16 Stevens Street.  

George Bunn

A Fourth Hand with Sailing Trawler Loch Fyne (Lowestoft), George died on 6th of September 1915. 

George was born at Pakefield in early 1901, a son of Arthur and Sarah Bunn. In 1901 his family lived at 11 Carlton Road, Pakefield, and this was still their home in 1911. 

James Frank Nunn
