070241 Harbour Yard raid

Luftwaffe Action

On the morning of the 7th February 1941, a low-level attack was made on the swing bridge and harbour works at Lowestoft were damaged and ten people killed. 


A single German raider, in a low level attack, scored direct hits on the Power House of the Swing Bridge, the Custom House, the Harbour Master’s Residence and the Harbour Works.

A Civilian, Charles died on 9th of February 1941 at the age of 57. Charles was born at Lowestoft on 2 March 1883, a son of William and Phoebe Lydia Drake. He was baptised at Oulton on 22 April 1883. The 1891 Census shows Charles with his grandparents at 9 Cambridge Road, and he was still living with them at that address in 1901 when he worked as a house painter. In 1911 Charles lived with his parents at 8 Stevens Street and he worked as a blacksmith's striker.  070241 Harbour Yard raid

A Civilian, John died on 7th of February 1941 aged 42. John was born at Lowestoft on 25 July 1898, a son of James and Agnes Quantrill. In 1901 his family lived at 6 Water Lane and this was still their home in 1911. By 1921 his family were living at 17 Water Lane and this was John’s home for the rest of his life. In 1928 John married Lilian Winifred Rachael Smith, this was registered in the Mutford district. 070241 Harbour Yard raid
A Civilian, Henry died on 7th of February 1941 aged 32. Henry was born at Barnby on 14 March 1908, a son Henry Charles and Beatrice Rackham. In 1911 his family lived at 14 Sycamore Avenue, Carlton Colville. In 1921 their address was 37 Sycamore Avenue and later Henry’s parents lived at 56 Sycamore Avenue.  070241 Harbour Yard raid
A Civilian, Walter died on 7th of February 1941 aged 48. Walter was born at Beccles on 27 December 1892, a son of John D. and Elizabeth H. Hawes. In 1901 his family lived at 6 Factory Court, Factory Street, Lowestoft. By 1911 they were living at 14 Rotterdam Road. Walter became a labourer with the Great Eastern Railway and worked at Lowestoft September 1916.  070241 Harbour Yard raid
A Civilian, George died on 7th of February 1941 aged 55. George was born at Everton, Liverpool, on 4 March 1885, a son of George Main and Jane Isabella Smith. In 1891 his family lived at 26 Newburgh Street, Amble, Northumberland. On 17 November 1908 George was became a Preventative Man with the Customs Service. In 1911 he lodged at 39 Alexandra Road, Grimsby.   070241 Harbour Yard raid
A Civilian, Jacob died on 7th of February 1941 at the age of 58.Jacob was born at Lowestoft on 11 June 1882, a son of John and Mary Ann Moore. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 6 August 1882. In 1891 his family lived at 15 Wollaston Road, Lowestoft, and this was till their address in 1901 when Jacob worked as a blacksmith. By 1911 Jacob's father had died and his family lived at 56 Haward Street. At this time Jacob worked as a blacksmith's striker for the Great Eastern Railway Company. 070241 Harbour Yard raid
A Civilian, Edward died on 7th of February 1941 aged 47.Edward was born at Great Yarmouth on 11 November 1893, a son of Edward and Mary Ann Jarvis. In 1901 his family lived at Lower Weedon, Northamptonshire, and by 1911 they were living at 4 Saint John’s Road, Lowestoft, and Edward was a fisherman. A Civilian, Charles died on 7th of February 1941 at the age of 38. Charles was born at Lowestoft on 1 July 1902, a son of Edward Bert and Jane Emma Wilton. He was baptised at Saint John's Church, Lowestoft, on 25 July 1902 and his family lived at Rotterdam Road.  070241 Harbour Yard raid
