A Petty Officer with H.M.S. Lynx. Walter died on 19th of April 1944 at the age of 32.

Walter was born at Lowestoft on 30 October 1911, a son of Reuben Knowles Perring and Ethel Maud Perring. In 1914 his family lived at 42 Haward Street, Lowestoft, and by 1921 at 62 Stanford Street.  Walter's father died in 1921 and during the 1920s his mother moved to 23 Minden Road, and this was still her home in 1939.

On 23 December 1935 Walter married Margaret Pickess at Christchurch, Lowestoft. Walter was working as a fisherman and lived at 23 Minden Road. Margaret was a fishworker living at 18 Strand Street, Lowestoft. In 1939 Margaret was living at 8 Strand Street, Lowestoft.

During the Second World War Walter served with H.M.S. Lynx which was the name given to the Royal Naval Patrol Service headquarters at Dover. Royal Navy registers of deaths show that on 20 April 1944 Walter drowned at Great Yarmouth as a result of accidentally falling overboard. It seems, therefore, that Walter was at Great Yarmouth with one of the ships that came under the administrative command of H.M.S. Lynx.

Commonwealth War Graves records state that Walter died 'between 19 and 20 April'.

I knew his wife Maggie Perring lovely lady. De facto mum to a lot of Beach kids. Her younger son Michael was my best mate I emigrated to NZ when I was 20 years old. I still regret leaving Lowestoft and not telling her what a special part of my life she was in my boyhood she lived then at 1 Strand Street She didn’t have much but I had many a jam sandwich in her house. She worked at Hurrens fish place East st. I still recall the sound of her wellie boots as she and her sister went by my back gate to start work at Hurrens packing and smoking the herring I still have affection and admiration for her and I’m 84 still living in New Plymouth NZ. As a war widow she did a good job of being a mother to 3 kids She had it tough and had a struggle She really was one of the best. It’s a pity people of her fortitude and resilience so often go unnoticed. I still remember you even though I haven’t seen you in 64 years My respect and affection Mrs Perring ..RIP

I well recall the Perring family. I grew up with the twins ,Michael and Ann perring they lived down the Beach at 1 Strand St .Mike was my best mate when we were growing on the Beach. Stayed together as friends since we were 4 years old until I emigrated to New Zealand in 1962. His mum mrs Perring was like a second mother to me. As a widow she had little for herself but she was a good mother and did a fine job as a mother to her three kids. Walter(Bimbo) and twins Mike and Ann .Mike died quite young in his early 40’s There wasn’t a bad bone in his body we had a good life growing up down the Beach .it was after the war almost like a big adventure play ground I am now 84 still in NZ and recall my mate Mike clearly in my mind. On the times I’ve been back to Lowestoft I still missed him. I lived in Newcombe Road next door to another mate Colin Posner when we were young. I’m
