Royal Edward Sinking

On 28 July 1915, Royal Edward embarked 1,367 officers and men at Avonmouth.The majority were reinforcements for the British 29th Infantry, with members of the Royal Army Medical Corps. All were destined for Gallipoli. Royal Edward was reported off the Lizard on the evening of the 28th, and had arrived at Alexandria on 10 August, a day after sister ship Royal George had sailed from Devonport. Royal Edward sailed for Moudros on the island of Lemnos, a staging point for the Dardanelles. On the morning of 13 August, Royal Edward passed the British hospital ship Soudan, heading in the opposite direction. Oberleutnant zur See Heino von Heimburg in the German submarine UB-14 was off the island of Kandeloussa and saw both ships. He allowed Soudan to pass unmolested, and focused his attention on the unescorted Royal Edward some 6 nautical miles (11 km) off Kandelioussa.He launched one of UB-14's two torpedoes from about a mile (2 km) away and hit Royal Edward in the stern. He was baptised at Saint Ives on 18 October 1882. By 1891 his family were living at 26 Beaconsfield Road, Kirkley. By 1901 they had moved to 59 Beaconsfield Road and William became a gasfitter's apprentice. By 1911 his family had moved to 32 Salisbury Road, Lowestoft, and William worked as a gas fitter. Christopher Clay

A Private with 54th (1/1st East Anglian) Casualty Clearing Station, Christopher died on 13th August 1915 at the age of 23.Christopher was born at Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, in 1892, a son of George and Jemima Clay. Christopher's father died in 1897 and by 1901 his family were living at 40 Oxford Road, High Wycombe.By 1911 Christopher had moved to Lowestoft and he lodged with Edward and Francis Mitchell, and family, at 19 Norwich Road. Ernest William Roberts

A Sergeant 54th (1/1st East Anglian) Casualty Clearing Station, Ernest died on 13th august 1915 at the age of 35. Ernest was born at Ipswich in 1881, a son of Charles King and Emma Roberts. He was baptised at Saint Helen's Church, Ipswich, on 7th August 1881 and his family lived at 39 Wells Street, Ipswich. By 1891 his family were living at 132 Woodhouse Street, Ipswich. Harry Hayward Hall

A Private with 54th (1/1st East Anglian) Casualty Clearing Station, Harry died on 13th August 1915 at the age of 29.Harry was born at Lowestoft on 26th March 1886, a son of Edward and Hannah Louisa Hall. He was baptised at Christchurch, Lowestoft, on 25th April 1886. In 1891 his family lived at 77 Saint Margaret's Road and by 1901 were living at 70 Oxford Road. George was born at Lowestoft on 21 January 1896, a son of George Edward and Alice Maud Brown. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 12 February 1896 and his family lived at 2 Raglan Cottages. By 1901 his family was living at 66 Seago Street, Lowestoft. From 15 February 1904 George attended Saint Margaret's Boys School. By 1911 his family were living at 131 Rotterdam Road, Lowestoft, and George worked as a coal merchant's clerk. A Private with 54th (1/1st East Anglian) Casualty Clearing Station, Reginald died on 13th of August 1915 at the age of 19. Reginald was born at Lowestoft in 1896, a son of William and Martha Coates. In 1901 his family lived at 76 Clapham Road, Lowestoft, and by 1911 they had moved to 39 Princes Road, Lowestoft. Reginald was living at 39 Princes Road when he volunteered and he joined the Army on 8 February 1915. Harry attended Church Road School and then, from 20 April 1909, he attended Lowestoft School of Science.
