130142 The Waller Raid

13 Jan 1942 Raid ”Lowestoft's worst raid of the war came at a time when attack was to be least expected. It was snowing and just before dusk on 13th January 1942 when a single Dornier glided over the coast unheard and released four bombs in the main shopping area, killing seventy people. The biggest casualty list occurred in Waller's restaurant where many civilians and Service folk were at tea. Almost a complete block of large shops was devastated , as were several other business premises. The town's biggest cinema, the Odeon which was opposite, was severely blasted.” Also Morlings shop

A Civilian, Edith died on 13th of January 1942 aged 27. Edith was born at Lowestoft on 31 January 1914, a daughter of Ernest Henry and Emma Beard. Edith was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 22 May 1914 and her family lived at 2 Nelson Road. In 1911 her family lived at 11 Laundry Lane, Lowestoft, and by 1921 they were living at the rear of 74 High Street. In 1939 Edith’s parents lived at 8 Queens Road.In 1938 Edith married Donald Stephen Paul, this was registered in the Mutford district. A Civilian, Iris died on 13th of January 1942 aged 16. Iris was born at Lowestoft on 15 May 1925, a daughter of Victor John and Winifred May Hood. In 1939 her family lived at 27 Saint Margarets Plain. Iris died at London Road North during the Waller Raid. 130142 The Waller Raid
Agnes Butcher
A Civilian, Agnes died on 15th of January 1942 aged of 15. Agnes was born at Lowestoft on 28 September 1926, a daughter of William John Ivory and Ethel S. Butcher. In 1939 her family lived at of 183 Saint Peters Street. Agnes was injured at London Road North, on 13 January 1942, during the Waller Raid. A Civilian, Daisy died on 13th of January 1942 aged 28. Daisy was born at Lowestoft on 5 August 1913, a daughter of William and Edith Emily Constance. In 1921 her family lived at 9 Coronation Terrace, Pakefield Street, and this was still their home in 1939. In 1939 Daisy lived at Wilson Square, Redenhall Road, Harleston, and was seeking work in domestic service.  Daisy died at Waller’s Restaurant, 90 London Road North, during the Waller Raid. 130142 The Waller Raid
A Civilian, Dora died on 13th of January 1942 aged 13. Dora was born at Lowestoft on 23 December 1928, a daughter of Frederick Victor and Alice Maud Aldred. A Civilian, Emma died on 13th of January 1942 aged 51. Emma was born at Ellingham, Norfolk, on 27 May 1890, a daughter of James and Rahcel Spall Whaley. She was baptised at Ellingham on 9 September 1890. In 1891 her family lived at Geldeston Road, Ellingham and this was still their address in 1901.In 1901 Emma married Ernest Harry Beard, this was registered in the Mutford district. In 1911 they lived at 11 Laundry Lane, Lowestoft, and by 1921 they were living at the rear of 74 High Street. In 1939 their home was at 8 Queens Road. A Leading Wren with H.M.S. Minos, Laura died on 13th of January 1942 at the age of 36. Laura was born at Lowestoft on 29 December 1905, a daughter of Robert Frank Bessant and Florence Caroline Bessant. Both the 1911 Census and the 1939 Register show Laura's family living at 263 Raglan Street. Before joining the Women's Royal Naval Service Laura has worked as a shop assistant - ladies dresses.  Laura and two other WRENS, Ivy Creighton, from Kent, and Margaret Thompson, from Holt, were killed when the cafe they were visiting was bombed. 130142 The Waller Raid
A Civilian, Nora died on 13th of January 1942 aged 47. Nora was born at Lowestoft on 18 September 1894, a daughter of The Reverend Charles H. and Nora Lacon. Nora was baptised at Saint Guthlac’s Church, Branston, Melton Mowbray, where her father was the Rector, on 11 November 1894. In 1901 her family lived at The Rectory Barton Mills, Suffolk. Later her parents lived at Saint Peter’s Court, Burgess Hill.  130142 The Waller Raid
A Civilian, David died on 13th of January 1942 aged 2. David was born at Lowestoft on 8 February 1939, the son of Donald Stephen and Edith Lucy Paul. In 1939 his family lived at 96 Somerton Avenue.On 13 January 1942 David, his mother Edith, and his grandmother Emma Beard, were all killed at London Road North during the Waller Raid.  130142 The Waller Raid
