Walter Sidney Broughton

A Deck Hand with Steam Trawler Newhaven (Lowestoft), Walter died on 15th of January 1940 at the age of 24. 

Walter was born at Weasenham, Norfolk, on 16 January 1916, a son of Sidney Walter and Alice Mary Broughton. In 1921 his family lived at Colkirk, near Fakenham. Later his parents lived at Kessingland. Walter first went to sea around 1930. In 1938 he married Scyllia Clarke and in 1939 their home was at 48 Rotterdam Road. Scyllia later remarried. Walter’s mother-in-law told a reported that before his final voyage he had a premonition that something was going to happen. 

The Newhaven was presumed lost, around 18 miles south south-east of Lowestoft, due to a mine explosion.
