An infantry regiment of the line in the British Army with a history dating back to 1685. It saw service for three centuries, participating in many wars and conflicts, including the First and Second World Wars.The 1st Battalion landed at Le Havre as part of the 84th Brigade in the 28th Division in January 1915 for service on the Western Front and then transferred to Egypt in 24 October 1915. Arthur William Hagg
A Private with 7th Battalion Suffolk Regiment, Arthur died on 23rd of March 1918 at the age of 25.
Arthur was born at Lowestoft in 1893, a son of William Thomas and Mary Ann Hagg. In 1901 his family lived at Anguish Street. In 1911 their address was 21 Anguish Street and Arthur was a baker’s assistant.
Frank William Harvey
A Private with the 7th Bn., Frank died on 10th of July 1915 at the age of 19.
Frank was born at Lowestoft on 3 April 1895, a son of John William and Ellen Louisa Harvey. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Kirkley, on 3 May 1895. From 27 February 1899 Frank was a pupil at Kirkley School and his family lived at Horn Hill. In 1901 Frank was staying with his grandmother, Emma Bird, at 8 Mill Road, Horn Hill. In 1911 his family lived at 31 Horn Hill and Frank was a milkman.
James Arthur Holliday
A Private with the 7th Battalion, James died on 30th of November 1917 at the age of 23.
James was born at Lowestoft in 1894, a son of Samuel and Emma Holliday. In 1901 his family lived at 102 Denmark Road. By 1911 they were living at 53 Beccles Road, and James was a draper’s apprentice.
James enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft. He joined the 6th (Cyclist) Battalion Suffolk Regiment, service number 2460. Later he was renumbered 40982 and posted to the 7th Battalion in France.
Leslie Nathaniel Hulme
A Private with the 7th Battalion, Leslie died on 30th of November 1917 at the age of 23.
Leslie was born at Kirkley in 1894, a son of Harry and Richanda Hulme. In 1901 his family lived at Victoria House, Victoria Road, Carlton Colville. By 1911 Leslie’s father had died and his family lived at Victoria Road, Oulton Broad. Later his mother’s address was 1 Sunnyside Cottages, Victoria Road, Oulton Broad. Leslie has not been traced in the 1911 Census.
Douglas Norman Jones
A Private with the 7th Battalion, Douglas died on 3rd of July 1916 at the age of 21.
John Charles Beckett Kent
A Private with the 7th Battalion, John died on 12th of October 1916 at the age of 24.
Sidney Kerry
A Private with 7th Bn., Sidney died on 24th of February 1915 at the age of 16.
Sidney was born at North Cove, a son fo Edward and Jane Kerry. In 1901 his family lived at Kemp's Heath, Oulton (note the Census gives the area as Kemp's Heath, note Camp's Heath). By 1911 Sidney's father had died and he lived with his mother at Lound Road, Blundeston. Sidney was a farm worker.
Sidney enlisted at Lowestoft and joined the Suffolk Regiment. He did not serve overseas.
Sidney died from measles at Shorncliffe Military Hospital.
Francis George Kirby
A Private with the 7th Battalion, Francis died on 3rd of July 1916 at the age of 22.
Francis was born at Kirkley on 9 December 1893, a son of Charles James and Phoebe Kirby. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Kirkley, on 6 April 1894. In 1901 his family lived at 16 Lorne Road, and this was Francis’ home for the rest of his life. In 1911 he worked as a bricklayer’s labourer.
Francis enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft and joined the Suffolk Regiment, service number 23471. He was posted to the 7th Battalion in France.
Robert William Kitson
A Private with 7th Bn., Robert died on 12th of April 1917 at the age of 19.
Robert was born at Somerleyton on 27 November 1897, a son of Hebert and Frances Maria Kitson. He was baptised at Saint Mary's Church, Somerleyton, on 2 October 1898.
In 1901 his family lived at The Street, Somerleyton, and by 1911 were living at Staith Cottages, Somerleyton.
Ambrose Victor Knight
A Private with 7th Bn., Ambrose died on 14th of May 1917 at the age of 19.
Ambrose was born at Blundeston in 1897, a son of Benjamin and Clara Knight. In 1901 his family lived at The Street, Blundeston, Lowestoft. By 1911 Ambrose's father had died and his family still lived at The Street, Blundeston, and Ambrose worked as a house boy-domestic.
Ambrose enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft. He served with the Suffolk Regiment, initially with the 6th (Cyclist) Battalion, number 1861, and later he was posted to France and joined the 7th Battalion, service number 43045.
Robert James Knights
A Private with the 7th Bn., Robert died on 13th of October 1915 at the age of 25.
Robert was born at Carlton Colville on 22 September 1890, a son of Samuel Henry and Elizabeth Knights. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Kirkley, on 21 December 1892, and his family lived at Kirkley.
Ernest William Larke
A Private with the 7th Battalion, Ernest died on 12th of October 1916 at the age of 36.
Ernest was born at Lowestoft in 1880, a son of Frederick William and Charlotte Elizabeth Larke. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 7 March 1880. In 1881 his family lived at the Mariners Inn, 54 Mariners Street, where his father was the innkeeper. By 1891 they were living at 26 Bevan Street. In early 1901 Ernest lodged at 7 Surrey Street, Lowestoft, with Alfred Hales, Maud’s brother, and Ernest worked as a coachman.
Joseph Leonard Linder
A Private with the 7th Battalion, Joseph died on 26/27th of March 1918 at the age of 25.
Joseph was born at Lowestoft on 6 May 1895, a son of Samuel Joseph and Minnie Linder. He was baptised at Saint Peter's Church, Kirkley, on 14 July 1895. In 1901 his family were living at 71 Lawson Road, Lowestoft. By 1911 Joseph's father had died and Joseph worked as an Assistant Inspector of Weights and Measures for Suffolk County Council.
Ernest James Martin
A Private with the 7th Battalion, Ernest died on 9th of August 1916 at the age of 30.
Ernest was born at Lowestoft on 30 November 1885, a son of Benjamin and Ellen Martin. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 5 September 1886. In 1891 his family lived at 217 Clapham Road, but the Census shows that Ernest was a patient at Lowestoft Hospital when the census was taken. From 29 June 1896 Ernest attended Saint Margaret's Boys School. By 1901 the family were living at 200 Clapham Road, and this was still the family home in 1911.
Allan Jack Mitchell
A Private with the 7th Battalion, Allan died on 28th of April 1917 at the age of 22.
Allan was born at Kessingland in 1895, a son of Arthur and Ellen Mitchell. In 1901 his family lived at The Beach, Kessingland. In 1911 their home was at Sunnyside, Church Road, Kessingland, and Allan was a junior clerk working for a coal merchant. Later his parents lived at Orient Lodge, Hall Road, Oulton Broad.
Frederick William Mullender
A Lance Corporal with 7th Bn., Frederick died on 4th of November 1915 at the age of 30.
Frederick was born at Pakefield on 21 February 1885, a son of Henry William and Ellen Mullender. Frederick was baptised at All Saints’ Church, Pakefield, 10 May 1885. From 17 September 1888 Frederick attended Cunningham School. In 1891 his family lived at 2 Prospect Place, Pakefield. By 1901 they were living at Millers Lane, Pakefield, and Frederick was an apprentice house painter.
Charles Edward Parker
A Private with the 7th Battalion, Charles died on 27th of March 1918 at the age of 24.
Henry John Pearman
A Private with the 7th Battalion, Henry died on 12th of October 1916 at the age of 18.
Henry was born at Ashby in 1897, a son of Arthur and Eliza Pearman. In 1901 his family lived at The Dell, Ashby, and this was still their home in 1911.
Henry volunteered and enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft in later September/early October 1914. He joined the Suffolk Regiment, service number 1493, and served with the 6th (Cyclist) Battalion. Harry was posted to the 7th Battalion in France, with service number 43084.

Frederick George Pegg
A Corporal with the 7th Battalion, Frederick died on 27th of March 1918 at the age of 31.
Frederick was born at Aylsham on 20 November 1886, a son of Alfred Charles and Clara Sophia Pegg. He was baptised at Saint Michael and All Angels Church, Aylsham, on 14 February 1887. His family lived at Hangate Street, Aylsham. In 1901 Frederick worked as an errand boy. In 1911 Frederick lived with his brother Ernest at 24 Carlton Road, Lowestoft, and worked with his brother as a tailor’s assistant.
George Lennard Porter
A Private with the 7th Battalion, George died on 9th of August 1916 at the age of 23.
George was born in 1893, a son of George and Eliza Porter. He was baptised at Saint Mary's Church, Blundeston, on 4 June 1893 and his family lived at Flixton. In 1901 his family lived at Wigg's Cottages, Flixton. In 1911 George was still living with his family at Flixton and he was employed as a domestic gardener. Later his family lived at 53 Kimberley Road, Lowestoft.
Arthur Victor Porter
A Private with 7th Bn., Arthur died on 4th of October 1915 at the age of 18.
Arthur was born at Lowestoft in 1897, a son of George and Emily Porter. In 1901 his family lived at 81 Wollaston Road, Lowestoft, and this was still their home in 1911.
Arthur volunteered and enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft. He joined the Suffolk Regiment and was posted to the 7th Battalion. He arrived in France with the 7th battalion on 30 May 1915.
Claude Noel Quinton
A Private with the 7th Battalion, Claude died on 3rd of July 1916 at the age of 19.
Claude was born at Lowestoft on 16 March 1897, a son of Jabez and Eliza Quinton. In 1901 his family lived at 200 Denmark Road. Claude was a pupil at Hervey Street School, and attended Saint John’s School from 27 March 1905 to 7 September 1905 when he joined Roman Hill School. In 1911 his family lived at 11 Summer Road.
Claude enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft. He joined the Suffolk Regiment, service number 22506, and was posted to the 7th battalion in France.
Albert James Rackham
A Lance Sergeant with 7th Bn., Albert died on 13th of October 1915 at the age of 28.
Albert was born at Beccles in 1887, a son of Thomas and Elizabeth Rackham. In 1891 his family lived at Denmark Road, Beccles. In 1901 their address was 3 Percy Terrace, Denmark Road, Beccles. By 1911 Albert was lodging at 1 Leiston Road, Lowestoft, and he worked as a manufacturer of ‘wearing apparel’.
Percival Rayner
A Private with the 7th Battalion, Percival died on 12th of October 1916 at the age of 29.
Percival was born at Lowestoft in 1887, a son of George and Elizabeth Rayner. In 1891 his family lived at 22 West Bevan Street. By 1901 they were living at 22 Norwich Road.
On 23 July 1910 Percival married Amy Marie Martin at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft. Percival was a sawyer living at 24 Kent Road, and Amy lived at 142 Denmark Road. In 1911 they lived at 66 Bevan Street and Percival was a sawyer at a saw mill. Later Amy lived at 142 Denmark Road.
Frank Yates Sayer
A Private with the 7th Battalion, Frank died on 27th of March 1918 at the age of 25.
Frank, otherwise known as Francis, was born at Lowestoft in 1895, a son of Francis Robert and Marie Elsie Sayer. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 13 August 1897 and his family lived at 4 Battery Green Road. By 1911 his family were living at Saint Margaret’s, The Marina, and Frank was a fish merchant’s clerk, possibly working for his father. Later his family lived at 94 Clapham Road, and his brother John lived at 19 The Esplanade.
Thomas Edward Sharman
A Private with the 7th Battalion, Thomas died on 3rd of July 1916 at the age of 27.
Thomas was born at Lowestoft in 1889, a son of Thomas Edward and Mary Jane Sharman. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 26 May 1889. In 1891 his family lived at 104 Cambridge Road and this was still their home in 1901. Later his parents lived at 84 Park Road.
James Mayhew Shillings
A Private with the 7th Battalion, James died on 13th of April 1916 at the age of 26.
Albert Victor Sladden
A Private with the 7th Battalion, Albert died on 28th of April 1917 at the age of 19.
Albert was born at Lowestoft in 1897, a son of Charles and Elizabeth Mary Sladden. He was baptised at Saint John’s Church, Lowestoft, on 17 December 1897 and his family lived at Hilda Villa, Rotterdam Road. In 1901 they lived at Saint Clwyd, Rotterdam Road. By 1911 they were living at 61 Lawson Road.
Albert worked for Mr. E.F. Thain, fishmonger, at Lowestoft.
William Frank Stebbings
A Private with the 7th Battalion, William died on 28th of April 1917 at the age of 19.
William was born at Lowestoft in 1897, a son of Henry Herbert and Katherine Stebbings. In 1901 his family lived at 160 Clapham Road, but the 1901 Census shows William staying with his aunt, Ellen Stebbings, at 26 Ferry Lane, Gorleston. In 1911 his family lived at 1 Holly Road, Oulton Broad, and William worked as a house painter, probably with his father.
Harry Cuthbert Todd
A Lance Corporal with the 7th Battalion, Harry died on 12th of October 1916 at the age of 23.
Harry was born at Kirkley on 23 February 1893, a son of Robert Charles and Amelia Todd. His given names were Cuthbert Harry, but in many records, including military ones, he is shown as Harry Cuthbert. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Kirkley, on 9 April 1893. In 1901 his family lived at 389 London Road. In 1911 they were still living at 389 London Road and Harry was a bricklayer, possibly working with his father.
Victor Claude Tripp
A Private with the 7th Battalion, Victor died on 12th of October 1916 at the age of 21.
Victor was born at Kessingland in 1895, a son of William and Maria Tripp. He was baptised at Saint Edmund’s Church, Kessingland, on 21 July 1895, and his family lived at The Beach, Kessingland. In 1901 his family lived at Dambrook House, Church Road, Kessingland, and this was still their home in 1911 when Victor worked as a marine insurance clerk, connected with the fishing industry.
Edward George Turrell
A Private with 7th Bn., Edward died on 3rd of July 1916 at the age of 36.
Edward was born at Lowestoft in 1879, a son of Edward G. and Martha Turrell. In 1881 his family lived at Rose Cottage, Clapham Road, Lowestoft. By 1891 they were living at 65 Seago Street. Edward's father died before 1901. In his family were still living at 65 Seago Street and Edward was a building contractor's labourer. Later his mother lived at 77 Rotterdam Road before moving to 15 Essex Road.
Jasper William Utting
A Private with the 7th Battalion, Jasper died on 9th of August 1917 at the age of 29.
Jasper was born at Kessingland on 6 November 1887, a son of Benjamin and Caroline Jane Utting. In 1891 his family lived at Beach Road, Kessingland. On 21 July 1895 Jasper was baptised at Saint Edmund’s Church, Kessingland. In 1901 his family lived at The Beach, Kessingland. In 1911 they lived at Green Lane, Kessingland, and later at Hill Cottage, Kessingland Beach.
In 1911 Jasper worked on the trawler Golden Rule.
Sam Websdale
A Private with the 7th Battalion, Sam died on 28th of April 1917 at the age of 36.
Sam was born at Oulton on 14 July 1880, a son of Henry and Hannah Websdale. He was baptised at Saint Michael’s Church, Oulton, on 31 May 1885, and his family lived at Oulton. In 1891 his family lived at Church Road, Oulton, and by 1901 at 1 Margarets Cottages, Moyes Road, Oulton, and Sam worked as a bricklayer’s labourer. This was still the family home in 1911 when Sam was still a bricklayer’s labourer.
Christopher Mantel Wren
A Private with 7th Bn. Christopher died on 2nd of August 1915 at the age of 17.
Christopher was born at Lowestoft in 1898, a son of Walter and Maude Mary Wren. In 1901 his family lived at 139 Clapham Road, Lowestoft, and this was Christopher's home throughout his life.
Ernest volunteered soon after the outbreak of war and enlisted in the Suffolk Regiment at Lowestoft. He served with the 7th Battalion and arrived in France with the Battalion on 30 May 1915.

George William Wright
A Private with the 7th Battalion, George died on 26th of November 1917 at the age of 24.
George was born at Lowestoft in 1893, a son of George and Esther Wright. In 1901 his family lived at 13 Selby Street. By 1911 they were living at 36 Worthing Road, and George was an apprentice shipwright. Later his parents lived at 59 Church Road.
Arthur Wright
A Private with 7th Bn., Arthur died on 13th of October 1915 at the age of 20.
Arthur was born at Market Harborough, Leicestershire, about 1897. No definite details have been found prior to 26 April 1909 when Arthur, and his younger brother George, became pupils at Saint Margaret’s School, Lowestoft, and his family lived at ‘Norwich House’.
Sidney Charles Wright
A Lance Corporal with the 7th Battalion, Sidney died on 12th of October 1916 at the age of 26.
Sidney was born at Lowestoft in 1890, a son of Charles and Emma Jane Wright. Sidney was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 26 January 1890. In 1891 his family lived at 117 Saint Margaret’s Road, Lowestoft, and this was still their home in 1901. Sidney attended Church Road Board School. By 1911 the family were living at 18 Worthing Road and Sidney was primary school teacher for Lowestoft Borough Council.

Richard was born at Lowestoft in 1895, a son of Thomas Charles and Elizabeth Adcock. In 1901 his family lived at 14 Saint John's Road, Lowestoft. By 1911 his family were living at Brickyard Cottages, Oulton Broad, and Richard worked as a bench boy at a saw mill. Later his mother lived at Colville Road, Oulton Broad, Lowestoft.
