Dredger Mercurius (London)

James Balls

A Deck Hand with Dredger Mercurius (London), James died on 28th of June 1916 at the age of 65. 

James was born at Lowestoft on 7 February 1852, a son of William and Sarah Balls. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 4 April 1852. In 1861 his family lived at 15 Jacob's Street, Lowestoft, and this was still their home in 1871 when James worked as a fisherman. 

James Buxton

A Deck Hand with Dredger Mercurius (London), James died on 28th of June 1916 at the age of 61.

James was born at Norwich in 1855, a son of William and Sarah Buxton. In 1861 his family lived at Greyhound Lane, Heigham, Norwich. By 1871 they were living at West End Street, Norwich, and James was a bricklayer’s labourer. 

In 1881 James was the Mate on the trawler Effort. 

On 20 November 1882 James married Eliza Elizabeth Rounce at Saint Peter’s Church, Kirkley. James was a fisherman and they both lived at Kirkley. In 1891 they lived at 35 Saint Leonards Road.

Frederick James Watson

A Deck Hand with Dredger Mercurius (London), Frederick died on 28th of June 1916 at the age of 60.

Frederick was born at Ramsgate, Kent, on 19 January 1856, a son of Edmund and Sarah Watson. He was baptised at Saint George’s Church, Ramsgate, on 2 March 1856. In 1861 his family lived at Ramsgate.

James Edward Long

A Quartermaster with H.M.H.S. Glenart Castle (Southampton), James died on 26th of February 1918 at the age of 43. 

James was born at Lowestoft in 1874, a son of George and Emma Long. In 1881 his family lived at 42 Tonning Street, Lowestoft. By 1891 they were living at 3 Flensburgh Street, and this was still their home in 1901. 

James became a merchant seaman, possible as early as 1888. In 1895-1899 he was an Able Seaman on the yacht Myrtle, based at Cowes, Isle of Wight. In 1899 he worked as an Able Seaman on the White Lady, also at Cowes, before returning to the Myrtle.

Noah Ayers

Noah Ayers

A Cable Hand with His Majesty's Telegraph Ship Monarch, Noah died on 8th of September 1915 at the age of 50.

Noah was born at Lowestoft in 1865, a son of James and Matilda Ayers. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 5 November 1865. In 1871 the family's address was 'Beach, near the Gas Works' and in 1881 their address was 'By East Street'. By 1881 Noah was working at sea. 

On 12 June 1886 Noah married Martha Maria Betmead at Saint Margaret's Church. In the 1890s they lived at 2 Whapload Road and by 1911 their home was at 20 Worthing Road, Lowestoft.

S. S. Mexico City

Charles Herbert Emms

A Master with S. S. Mexico City, Charles died on 5th of February 1918 at the age of 53.

Charles was born at Lowestoft in 1864, a son of Jewett David and Fanny Elizabeth Emms. He was privately baptised by the Vicar of Saint John’s Church on 14 March 1864, and his family lived at Commercial Road. In 1871 the family lived at 3 Commercial Road where Charles’ father had a bakery and grocer’s shop. After his father’s death his family lived at Cyprus House, 11 London Road, and in 1911 he had relatives lived at 34 Marine Parade.

George Thomas Cleveland

An Apprentice with S.S. Arndale (Whitby), George died on 10th of June 1915 at the age of 17. 

George was born at Lowestoft in 1898, a son of James and Mary Cleveland. He was baptised at Saint John's Church, Lowestoft, on 24 June 1898 and his family lived at Laundry Lane. They were still living at Laundry Lane in 1901. By 1911 George's father had died and his mother lived at 4 Strand Street, Lowestoft. Later she lived at 3 Spurgeon Street, Lowestoft.

S.S. Baku Standard (Swansea)

Ivan Herbert Mummery

A Third Mate with S.S. Baku Standard (Swansea), Ivan died on 11th of February 1918 at the age of 19. 

Ivan was born at Lowestoft on 7 July 1898 a son of John Herbert and Mahala Florence Mummery. In 1901 his family lived at 6 Battery Green Road. Ivan attended Morton Road School before becoming a pupil at Lowestoft School of Science on 14 September 1910. By 1910 his family were living at 25 Kirkley Park Road. Ivan, and all of his brothers and sisters, was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Kirkley, on 11 November 1911.

S.S. Hebble (Goole)

Thomas Cutter

An Able Seaman with S.S. Hebble (Goole), Thomas died on 6th of May 1917 at the age of 50. 

Thomas was born at Kessingland on 3 January 1866, a son of Charles and Eliza Cutter. He was baptised at Saint Edmunds Church, Kessingland, on 28 January 1866. In 1871 his family lived ‘near the sea’ Kessingland. In 1881 his family lived at Beach Road, Kessingland, and Thomas was a carpenter. Later his father lived at Market Place, Kessingland. 

S.S. Mesopotamia.

Walter Edward Sayer

A Second Mate with S.S. Mesopotamia, Walter died on 30th of November 1918 at the age of 23. 

Walter was born at Lowestoft in 1896, a son of Francis Robert and Marie Elsie Sayer. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 13 August 1897 and his family lived at 4 Battery Green Road. By 1911 his family were living at Saint Margaret’s, The Marina, and Walter was a boarder at Framlingham College. Later his family lived at 94 Clapham Road, and his brother, John, lived at 19 The Esplanade. 

S.S. Oriole (London)

James William Hargrave

A Boatswain and Lamps with S.S. Oriole (London). James died on 30th of January 1915 at the age of 43. 

James was born at Lowestoft in 1871, a son of James and Elizabeth Hargrave. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 1 October 1871. In 1881 his family lived at 6 Grosvenor Road, Lowestoft. 

In 1891 James was lodging at 45 Battersea Park Road, Battersea, London, and James was a lighterman's apprentice and it seems that he began work as a Thames Lighterman in 1888. 

Thomas William Holland

An Ordinary Seaman with S. S. Oriole (London). Thomas died on 30th of January 1915 at the age of 23. 

Thomas was born at Lowestoft on 3 May 1891, a son of Robert and Ann Elizabeth Holland. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 29 May 1891 and his family lived at Maltsters Score. In 1901 their address was 9 Maltsters Score and by 1911 they were living at 15 Dove Street, and Thomas was a herring fisherman. 

S.S. Planudes

Richard Allison Wilson

A Chief Engineer with S.S. Planudes, Richard died on 18th of January 1917 at the age of 29. 

Richard was born at Byker, Newcastle upon Tyne, in 1888, a son of Richard Allison Wilson and Ann Llewellyn Wilson. In 1891 he was living with his grandmother, Ellen Llewellyn, at Burnaby Street, Byker. In 1901 he was living with his parents at 11 Mason Street, Byker. 

In 1911 Richard was the Second Engineer on the S.S. Active (London) at King’s Lynn. 

S.S. Powhatan (Sunderland)

Alfred George Ward

An Able Seaman with S.S. Powhatan (Sunderland), Alfred died on 6th of April 1917 at the age of 28.

Alfred was born at Aldeby, Norfolk, on 29 March 1889, a son of William and Alice Ward. He was baptised at Aldeby on 20 July 1890. In 1891 his family lived at The Street, Aldeby. By 1901 they were living at Wheatacre, Norfolk. Alfred’s mother died in 1902. In 1911 Alfred was a net rope man on the steam drifter Dollar Princess, LT 764, at Lowestoft. Later his father lived at Kimberley Road, Lowestoft.

S.S. Rubens

Thomas Augustine French

A Captain with S.S. Rubens, Thomas died on 8th of October 1915 at the age of 51. 

Thomas was born at Lowestoft on 15 May 1864, a son of Thomas Turner and Maria Elizabeth French. In 1881 his family lived at Ivy Cottage, Denmark Road, Lowestoft. Later his parents lived at 8 Wellington Esplanade, Lowestoft. 

On 31 July 1880 Thomas began a four-year Merchant Navy apprenticeship with J. Corry of London. 

Thomas was awarded his Mate’s Certificate on 14 June 1888. 

S.S. Sixty Six (Middlesbrough)

Gilbert Pickering Watson Farrer

An Able Seaman with S.S. Sixty Six (Middlesbrough), Gilbert died on 29th of June 1918 at the age of 68. 

John Gross

A Mate with S.S. Sixty Six (Middlesbrough), John died on 29th of June 1918 at the age of 62. 

John was born at Lowestoft in 1856, a son of John and Charlotte Gross. In 1861 his family lived at London Road, and in 1871 they lived at 6 Redwell Buildings, Kirkley. In 1875 John worked on the S.S. Pacific. By 1881 his family were living at West Side, 8 Saint George’s Road, Kirkley, and John was a mariner. 

S.S. Strathcona (Hamilton Ontario)

Robert Richard Clarke

A First Mate with S.S. Strathcona (Hamilton, Ontario), Robert died on 13th of April 1917 at the age of 55. 

Robert was born at Lowestoft on 8 February 1862, a son of James Albert and Eliza Clarke. He was baptised at Christchurch, Lowestoft, on 1 May 1870. In 1871 his family lived at Wilde’s Score. Later Robert’s mother lived at Bemment’s Buildings, Saint Peter’s Street, and subsequently at 37 Albert Street.
