Alan Richard Adcock

A Marine with the Royal Marine Engineers, Alan died on 8th of April 1944 aged 22. 

Alan was born at Lowestoft on 6 June 1921, a son of Thomas Charles and Daisy Adcock. He was baptised at Saint Peter's Church, Carlton Colville, on 4 September 1921. His family lived at 7 Colville Road, Lowestoft.
In 1939 Alan lived with his parents, at 7 Colville Road, and worked as a bricklayer. 

Alan served with the Royal Marine Engineers, an element of the Royal Marines in which men were trained in demolition and assault engineering.

Sidney  Bailey

Sidney Samuel Bailey

A Gunner with 2nd Section 51st Divisional Ammunition Column. Sidney died on 24th of July 1918 at the age of 22. 

Sidney was born at Kirkley on 2 April 1896, a son of Robert and Sarah Ellen Bailey of 15 Southwell Road. He was baptised at Saint Peter's Church, Kirkley, on 29 April 1896. Throughout Sidney’s life his family lived at 15 Southwell Road. 

Sidney volunteered to join the Army and he enlisted in the Royal Field Artillery (Territorial Force) at Lowestoft, service number 429. He arrived in France on 1 November 1915. In 1917 he was renumbered as 645505. 

Clifford Charles Bailey

A Gunner with 68 Medium Regiment, Clifford died on 14th of November 1942 aged 22.

Born at Barsham, near Beccles, in 1920, a son of Edgar Charles and Maria Bailey. In 1921 his family lived at Marsh Cottage, Barsham, and by 1939 their home was at 1 Back House, Rushmere. 

Clifford enlisted in the Royal Artillery in 1939. By 1942 Clifford was serving with 68 Medium Regiment in North Africa. He was reported missing on 20 June 1942 which is when his regiment was captured at Tobruk. 

Reginald Clifford Baker

An Able Seaman with H.M.M.G.B. 77, Reginald died on 16th of July 1942 aged 22.

Reginald was born at Lowestoft on 13 December 1919, a son of Reginald Walter Baker and of Merab Baker. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 8 January 1920 and his family lived at 17 ‘rear’ Park Road and this was still their address in 1921. By 1929, when Reginald’s father died, the family home was at 311 Raglan Street. Reginald’s mother remarried and in 1939 she lived at 24 Winnipeg Road. 

Arthur Baker

A Deck Hand with H.M. Drifter Lindsell. Arthur died on 3rd of September 1914 at the age of 22. 

Arthur was born at Carlton Colville on 16 June 1894, a son of George and Anne Maria Baker. Arthur was baptised at Saint Peter's Church, Carlton Colville, on 30 December 1894, and his family lived at Carlton Colville. In 1901 his family lived at 1 Bloodmoor Cottages, Gisleham. Arthur attended Gisleham School. In 1911 his family lived at Bloodmoor Lane, Gisleham, and Arthur was a farm labourer.

Winifred Arabella Baker

A Civilian, Winifred died on 13th of January 1942 at the age of 22. 

Winifred was born on 19 December 1920, a daughter of James George and Fanny Baker of 4 Gisleham Road, Carlton Colville. In 1939 she worked in domestic service.

Died at London Road North.

14th January 1942, Evercreech. A quiet, tiny place, under a blanket of snow.

The Captain sent for me. He gravely told me a telegram from my Father had reported a serious raid on Lowestoft, my home town. He told me “Winnie is missing”. I almost collapsed, a pain shooting through my very soul.

William John Barber

A Private with the 7th Battalion, William died on 28th of April 1917 at the age of 22. 

William was born at Lowestoft on 24 April 1895, a son of William Charles and Mary Elizabeth Barber. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Kirkley, on 26 May 1895. From 5 June 1899 William was a pupil at Kirkley School and his family lived at 84 Saint Leonard’s Road. In 1901 his family lived at 22 Lawson Road, and this was still their home in 1911 when Willaim was an apprentice tinsmith. 

Arthur Barnard

A Lance Corporal, Arthur died on 18 November 1916 at the age of 22. 

Francis William Beamish

A Deck Hand with H.M. Drifter Gleaner of the Sea, Francis died on 26th of October 1916 at the age of 22. 

Francis was born at Carlton Colville on 9th November 1893, a son of William and Jessie Beamish of 186 The Avenue Lowestoft Suffolk.

Francis, like his father, was a fisherman. He joined the Royal Naval Reserve on 11th January 1915 and served on board the drifter 'Gleaner of the Sea'.

Sidney Charles Beckham

A Deck Hand with HMS Halcyon II, Sidney on 6th of December 1918 aged 22.

Sidney was born at Lowestoft on 7 June 1896, a son of Joshua and Alice Beckham. By 1901 Sidney’s father had died and his family lived at The Mariner’s Inn, Mariner’s Street, where his mother was the innkeeper. By 1911 they were living at 5 Nelson Terrace, Pakefield, and Sidney was a caddie at the golf course. They were still living at 5 Nelson Terrace in 1915 and later his mother lived at 2 Tram Terminus, Pakefield.

Thomas Alan Bishop

An Able Seaman with H.M.S. Capel, Thomas died on 26th of December 1944 aged 22. 

Thomas was born at Lowestoft on 5 October 1922, a son of Thomas Samuel and Nellie Kathleen Bishop. He was baptised at Christ Church, Lowestoft, on 22 October 1922 and his family lived at 102 Saint Peter’s Street. This was still the family home in 1939 when Thomas was a sheet metal worker.

Arthur William Blake

A Lance Corporal with the 7th Battalion, Arthur died on 24th of October 1918 aged 22. 

Arthur was born at Hardley, near Loddon, in 1896, a son of Arthur and Laura Blake. By 1901 his family were living at Park Hill Cottages, Corton. In 1911 their address was 3 Park Hill Cottages, and Arthur was a farm boy. 

Victor Edward Blowers

A Lance Corporal with 1st Bn. Victor died on 30th of June 1918 at the age of 22. 

Victor was born at Kessingland in 1896, a son of Thomas Edward and Mabel Ethel Blowers. He was baptised at Saint Edmund's Church, Kessingland, on 3 May 1896. In 1901 his family were living at The Beach, Kessingland, and this was still their address in 1911, when Victor worked as an errand boy. Later his parents lived at 4 Geneva Cottages, Kessingland.

A Seaman Cook with H.M. Trawler Edwardian, Roy died on 11th of August 1940 at the age of 22. 

Roy was born at Pakefield on 17 February 1918, a son of William H. G. and Lily Selina Boon. By 1921 his family was living at 14 Wellington Road, Pakefield. This was still their home in 1939 and, at that time, Roy worked as an aluminium moulder and fixer.

Jack Boutle

A Sergeant with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, Jack died on 5th of October 1944 aged 22. 

Jack was born at Croydon, Surrey, on 14 April 1922, a son of John William and of Lilian Gertrude Boutle. In 1939 his family lived at 1 Union Place and Jack was a fruiterer’s shop assistant. 

Jack enlisted in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve after June 1940. By October 1944 Jack was a Flight-Engineers with 101 Squadron, based at Ludford Magna, Lincolnshire.

Allan John Boyce

A Corporal with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, Allan died on 8th of December 1943 aged 22. 

Allan was born at Lowestoft on 9 October 1921, a son of Samuel and Elizabeth Ann Boyce. He was baptised at Saint John’s Church on 11 December 1921 and his family lived at 61 Sussex Road. By 1939 his family were living at 45 London Road South and Allan was a printer’s apprentice. 

Allan enlisted in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve between September 1939 and August 1940. 

Sidney Charles Boyce

A Gunner with 270th Brigade, Sidney died on 2nd of November 1917 at the age of 22. 

Sidney was born at Lowestoft in 1895, the only son of Charles Matthew and Emmeline Boyce. In 1901 his family lived at Norwich Road, Lowestoft, and by 1911 they were living at 13 Stanley Street and Sidney was an apprentice printing compositor. 

Leonard Charles Brady

A Private with the 7th Battalion, Leonard died on 30th of November 1917 at the age of 22. 

Leonard was born at Beccles on 9 January 1895, a son of William and Caroline Brady. Note some sources state that he was born at Kirkley but on two consecutive censuses his family recorded his place of birth as Beccles. Leonard was a pupil at Kirkley School from 31 August 1898 and throughout his life his family lived at 22 Saint Leonard’s Road. In 1911 Leonard was a grocer’s errand boy. 

Sidney Frank Brown

A Sapper with 70th Motor Air Line Section, Sidney died on 1st of October 1918 aged 22. 

Sidney was born at Lowestoft in 1896, a son of James and Emma Frances Brown. He was baptised at Saint John’s Church on 7 June 1896 and his family lived at 14 Selby Street. By 1911 his family were living at 101 Beresford Road, and Sidney was a telegraph messenger boy. In 1912 Sidney became as assistant postman at Lowestoft and, according to the Post Office memorial books for World War One, he was working for the Post Office’s Eastern Engineering Department when he joined the Army.   

William Arthur Brown

A Fifth Engineer Officer with S.S. Fort Bellingham (London), William died on 26th of January 1944 aged 22. 

William was born at Lowestoft on 15 November 1921, a son of Oliver and Martha Hannah Brown of Lowestoft Suffolk. He was baptised at Saint John’s Church on 2 December 1921 and his family lived at 54 Raglan Street. By 1939 they were living at 7 Summer Road and William was an engineer’s apprentice.

John Herbert Bryant

A Leading Seaman with H.M. Trawler Lord Stamp. John died on 14th of October 1940 at the age of 22. 

John was born at London on 4 February 1918, a son of Herbert John and Lily Blanche Bryant. He was baptised at Christ Church, Rotherhithe, on 24 February 1918 and his family lived at 12 Gomm (sic) Road, Rotherhithe. By 1921 his family was living at 66 Crown Street, Lowestoft, and by 1939 they were living at 185 Saint Peter's Street, Lowestoft.

Geoffrey Burnaby

A Lieutenant with 1/1st Bn., Geoffrey died on 23rd of October 1916 at the age of 22. 

Rupert Percy Butler

A Private with the 9th Battalion, Rupert died on 3rd of July 1916 at the age of 22. 

Rupert was born at Ely in 1893, a son of Harry and Hannah (Annie) Mary Lord Butler. His father, a G.E.R. railway inspector, died in 1894. By 1901 Rupert’s mother, and older brother, Frederick, were living at 101 Stanley Street, and Rupert was living at the Alexandra Orphanage, Hornsey Rise, Islington, London. 

In 1911 Rupert lived with his uncle Horace Wright at 53 Rutland Road, Ilford, and Rupert worked as a clerk at a warehouse.

William Charles Calthorpe

A Lance Corporal with the 9th Bn., William died on 26th of September 1918 at the age of 22. 

William was born at Lowestoft in 1896, a son of Susannah Calthorpe. In 1911 he was an inmate at Lothingland House (Workhouse), Oulton Broad. A Pension Record Card shows that his mother also resided at Lothingland House (Workhouse), Oulton Broad, after William's death. 

George Edward Carver

A Private with 2/1st Buckinghamshire Battalion, George died on 19th of July 1916 at the age of 22. 

George was born at Oulton, Lowestoft, on 29 January 1894, a son of Dennis Edward and Sylvia Carver. He was baptised at Saint Michael's Church, Oulton, on 18 March 1894. In 1901 his family lived at 1 Fern Villa, Commodore Road, Oulton. By 1911 they had moved to Hill Cottage, Rock Estate, Oulton, and George worked as a labourer at an oil merchants. 

Reginald Robert Frank Castleton

A Private with 2/1st Bucks Battalion, Reginald died on 26th of June 1916 at the age of 22. 

Reginald was born at Lowestoft in 1893, a son of Charles T. W. and Emily A, Castleton. By 1901 Reginald’s mother had died and the family lived at 152 Saint Peters Street, Lowestoft, this was Reginald’s home for the rest of his life. In 1911 Reginald worked as a grocer’s assistant. 

Percy Chapman

A Private with the 9th Battalion, Percy died on 18th of October 1916 at the age of 22.

Percy was born at Lowestoft on 7 May 1894, a son of Edward and Sarah Jane Chapman. Percy attended Dames’ School and, on 27 August 1900, became a pupil at Saint John’s School. In 1901 his family lived at 107 London Road South. By 1911 they were living at 47 London Road South and Percy was a printer. Later his family lived at 171 High Street.   

Clement Wilfred Clarke

A Private with the 11th Battalion, Clement died on 9th of April 1918 at the age of 22. 

Clement Wilfred, who was later better known as Wilfred, was born at Pakefield on 1 November 1896, a son of Frederick and Alice Fanny Clarke. He was baptised at All Saints' Church, Pakefield, on 13 December 1896. In 1901 his family lived at Carlton Road, Pakefield, close to All Saints' Church, and in 1911 their address was still at Carleton Road. After the war his parents lived at Hammond's Cottages, Pakefield. 

Stanley Ernest Coleman

A Private with the 7th Battalion, Stanley died on 18th of April 1916 at the age of 22.

Stanley was born at Carlton Colville in 1893, a son of James and Ellen Coleman. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Carlton Colville on 11 June 1893, and his family lived at Carlton Colville. In 1901 his family lived at Low Road, Carlton Colville. By 1911 they were living at 9 Marsh Road, Oulton Broad, and Stanley was a grocer’s assistant.

Brian Coleman

A Sergeant with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, Brian died on 2nd of December 1944 aged 22. 

Brian was born at Lowestoft on 1 November 1924, a son of Leonard E. and Bessie M. Coleman. In 1939 his family lived at 251 Victoria Road, Oulton Broad, and Brian was till at school.

Brian joined the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve after October 1942. In December 1944 he was a member of 70 Squadron based at Tortorella, Italy. 

John Weatherstone Cookes

A Sub Lieutenant with Drake Battalion, Royal Naval Division, John died on 30th of December 1917 at the age of 22. 

John was born at Balham, Surrey, on 17 February 1895, a son of Walter Ulric and Mary Gertrude Cookes. He was baptised at Saint Mary’s Church, Balham, on 28 April 1895, and his family lived at 10 Dornton Road, Balham. In 1901 his family lived at York Villas, Commodore Road, Oulton Broad. By 1911 they were living at Avonholme, Romany Road, Oulton Broad.

Ernest Edward Cooper

A Private with the 10th Battalion, Ernest died on 8th of August 1918 aged 22. 

Ernest was born at Lowestoft in May 1896, a son of Peter and Annie Cooper. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 14 October 1896. Throughout Ernest’s life his family lived at 10 Cathcart Street. From 1 February 1904 Ernest attended Saint Margaret’s School. In 1911 Ernest was a confectioner’s errand boy.  

Frederick Thomas Deal

A Seaman with H.M. Trawler Birdlip., Frederick died on 13th of June 1944 at the age of 22.

Frederick was born at Walthamstow on 15 September 1921, a son of Thomas James and Beatrice E. Deal. In 1939 he lived with his family at 1 Joscelyne Square, Leigh Hill, Southend-on-Sea, and Frederick worked as a signwriter. 

Frederick married Sybil Bertha Brady, at Lowestoft, in 1943.

A Lance Corporal with the 7th (Galloway) Battalion, John died on 4 April 1944, aged 22.

John was born at Laverhay, Wamphrey, Dumfriesshire in 1921 a son of John and Agnes Murdoch.
In 1943 John married Joyce Mary Key Blake, of 36 Nelson Road, Pakefield, this was registered in the Lothingland district. Joyce remarried in 1947. 

Frank Stanley Dorling

A Private with the 8th Battalion, Frank died on 18th of July 1916 at the age of 22. 

Frank was born at Lowestoft in 1894, a son of Edwin Thomas and Louisa Dorling. From 7 May 1900 Frank was a pupil at Kirkley School and his family lived at 134 Beaconsfield Road. By 1911 they were living at 241 London Road South, and Frank was an assistant in his father green-grocer’s business. 

Frank volunteered and enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft. He joined the Suffolk Regiment, service number 13927, and arrived in France with the 8th Battalion on 25 July 1915.

Edmund Reuben Durrant

A Private with the 7th Battalion, Edmund died on 12th of October 1916 at the age of 22. 

Edmund was born at Great Yarmouth on 5 March 1895, a son of Edmund Alfred and Esther Maria Durrant. He was baptised at Great Yarmouth on 24 April 1895. In 1900 his family lived at 7 Ashby Terrace, Kirkley. Edmund became a pupil at Kirkley School on 6 March 1900. In 1901 his family lived at 60 Beaconsfield Road, Lowestoft, and this was still their home in 1911 when Edmund was an engineer’s apprentice at a motor works. Later his mother lived at 39 Lovewell Road, South Lowestoft. 

Arthur George Durrant

A Deck Hand with H.M. Trawler Strathgeldie, Arthur died on 4th of January 1919 at the age of 22. 

Arthur was born at Kessingland on 3 January 1897, a son of Barzillai Thompson and Annie Maria Durrant. He was baptised at Saint Edmund's Church, Kessingland, on 19 March 1899. In 1901 his family lived at Prospect Cottages, London Road, Kessingland, and by 1911 at 1 Jubilee Villas, London Road, Kessingland. Later they lived at Lyndia Cottage, Kessingland.

James William Durrant

A Private with the 4th Battalion, James died on 3rd of October 1943 aged 22. 

James was born at Dovercourt, Essex, on 7 February 1921, a son of James Robert and Winifred Anne Durrant. He was baptised at All Saints’ Church, Dovercourt, on 6 March 1921, and his family lived at 7 Lea Road, Dovercourt. By 1939 his family were living at 10 Laurel Road, Lowestoft.  

James was working as a salesman when he joined the Suffolk Regiment and served with 3 Company in the 4th Battalion.

Samuel George Edmunds

A Deck Hand with H.M.P.M.S. Ascot. Samuel died on 10th of November 1918 at the age of 22. 

Samuel was born at Lowestoft on 31 October 1896, a son of James and Maud Edmunds. By 1901 Samuel's father had died and his mother married Charles Forwood and they lived at 8 Gun Lane, Lowestoft. Later they lived at 82 Queens Road.  

At Lowestoft Petty Sessions on 21 November 1910 Samuel was found guilty of stealing 31 herring worth 9d (9 pence). He was sentenced to four years detention: until he was 19 years of age. In 1911 he was at the Kerrison Reformatory School, Thorndon, Suffolk. 

Sidney Arthur Edwards

A Private with the 8th Battalion, Sidney died on 24th of September 1918 aged 22. 

Sidney was born at Kessingland in 1896, a son of Frederick George and Laura Edwards. He was baptised at Saint Edmund’s Church, Kessingland, on 6 September 1896 and his family lived at Upper Kessingland. In 1901 his family lived at 32 Seago Street, Lowestoft, and in 1911 at 27 Princes Road when Sidney was a chemist’s errand boy. Later his parents lived at 164 Saint Peters Street.
