Jack Arthur Adams

A Private with 160 Detail Issue Depot, Jack died on 6th of December 1944 at the age of 19. Son of Arthur Robert and Olive Aswin Adams of Lowestoft.

John Arthur Allen

A Private with 1st Bn. John died on 9th of July 1944 at the age of 19. 

John was born at Lowestoft in 1925, a son of Harry Leon and Adelaide Alice May Allen. John's father died in 1926 and in 1929 his mother married Ernest Bridge. Throughout his life John's family lived at 64 Saint George's Road, Lowestoft.

John served with the 1st Battalion Royal Norfolk Regiment. His battalion landed on Red Queen Beach on D-Day, 6 June 1944. 

George Reginald Ames

A Private with 2nd Bn., George died on 28th of May 1944 at the age of 19. Son of James Ames and of Catherine Mary Ames of Lowestoft Suffolk.

Edward Albert Arnold

A Private, Edward died on 13th of August 1944 at the age of 19.

Son of Gertrude Louisa and the late William Arnold of 1 Beach Stone Place Pakefield Lowestoft. 

Edward was reported missing on 7 August 1944 and believed to be a prisoner of war. Later it was reported that he had died while a prisoner, in German hands, on 13 August 1944 and it was finally concluded that he had actually died of wounds, whilst in German hands, on 13 August 1944. 

Henry Goldsmith Balls

Henry Goldsmith Balls

A Lance Corporal with 11th Bn., Henry died on 9th of April 1917 at the age of 19. 

Henry was born at Lowestoft on 27 July 1897, a son of Henry Goldsmith Balls and Elizabeth Balls. In 1901 his family lived at 21 Alma Road, Lowestoft, and this was still their address in 1911 when Henry worked as a hairdresser's assistant, possibly working with his brother Robert. 

Henry attended Hervey Street School until 1 February 1905 when he became a pupil at Saint John's School, Lowestoft. 

William Alexander Balls

A Private with 2nd Bn., William died on 13th of November 1916 at the age of 19. 

William was born at Lowestoft in 1897 a son of Arthur Nathaniel and Emma E. Balls. In 1901 his family lived at 29 Cambridge Road, Lowestoft, and by 1911 they were living at 70 Ipswich Road, Lowestoft. 

William enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft. He joined the Suffolk Regiment and served in France with the 2nd Battalion.

Colonel Murphy’s ‘The History of the Suffolk Regiment 1914-1927’ has the following account of the 2nd Battalion’s attack at Serre on 13 November 1916:

William John Barker

A Private with the 17th Battalion, William died on 20th of October 1918 at the age of 19. 

William was born at Lowestoft in 1899, a son of William John and Edith Barker. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 3 July 1901 and his family lived at Police Station Road. In 1911 his family lived at Gayes Cottage, London Road, Pakefield, and later his father lived at 4 Cooks Buildings, East Street, Lowestoft.

Vincent William Baxter

A Lance Corporal with the 8th Battalion, Vincent died on 17th of September 1916 at the age of 19. 

Vincent was born at Oulton in 1896, a son of William and Mary Ann Baxter. In 1901 his family lived at Park Road, Rock Estate, Oulton. This was still their address in 1911 when Vincent worked as a messenger boy for a boat builder. Later his parent's address was Verna Cottage, Park Road, Rock Estate. 

Stanley Walter Baxter

A Private with 1st Bn., Stanley died on 11th of October 1918 at the age of 19. 

Stanley was born at Barnby on 30 May 1899, a son of Walter James and Amelia Marcella Baxter. He was baptised at Saint John the Baptist Church, Barnby, on 25 June 1899. In 1901 his family lived at Barnby Green. In 1911 their address was 'near the Post Office, Barnby Green.'

In 1915 Stanley began work as a porter with the Great Eastern Railway at the Barnby Siding, Carlton Colville.

Charles Henry Benstead

Charles Henry Benstead

A Seaman with H.M.S. Cressy. Charles died on 22nd of September 1914 at the age of 19. 

Charles was born at Lowestoft on 1 October 1895, a son of James Henry and Sarah Benstead. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 27 October 1895 and his family lived at 34 Bevan Street, Lowestoft.

In 1912 Charles worked on the trawler Nimrod, LT 598, and in 1913 on the Children's Friend LT 174; Councillor, LT 267, and LT 1104. 

Charles joined the Royal Naval Reserve on 15 March 1912.  

George Alexander Blowers

A Private with 7th Bn. George died on 1st of July 1916 at the age of 19. 

George was born at Barnby in 1897, a son of George and Mary Blowers. In 1901 his family lived at Carlton Road, Pakefield. By 1911 they were living at 2 Carlton Terrace, Carlton Road, Pakefield. Later they lived at 3 Rochester Road, Lowestoft.

Cecil John Boor

A Deck Hand with H.M. Drifter Piscatorial II., Cecil died on 28th of December 1917 at the age of 19. Son of Samuel John and Emma Jane Boor of 119 St. Margarets Rd. Lowestoft.

An Able Seaman with Hood Battalion Royal Naval Division, Jack died on 8th of October 1918 at the age of 19. Son of John and Emma Boyce of The Hole Ashby.

James George Briggs

A Private with the 9th Battalion, James died on 12th of October 1916 at the age of 19. 

James was born at Saint Andrews, Suffolk, in 1896, a son of James and Mary Briggs. In 1901 his family lived at The Street, Rumburgh. By 1911 they were living at wood Farm, Redisham, and James was a stockman on the farm. Later his parents lived at Epsom Terrace, 10 Kirkley Run, Lowestoft. 

Reginald James Brown

A Private with the 8th Battalion, Reginald died on 26th of September 1916 at the age of 19. 

Sidney Bavney Brown

A Private with the 2nd Battalion, Sidney died on 22nd of October 1916 at the age of 19. 

Sidney was born at Frostenden in 1898, a son of Harry and Anna Brown. In 1901 his family lived at 89 Cambridge Road, Lowestoft, and this was still their home in 1911 when Sidney worked as a junior clerk at Lowestoft Corporation Electrical Works. Later his parents lived at 13 Worthing Road and then 46 Sussex Road.

George William Brown

A Private with 54th (1/1st East Anglian) Casualty Clearing Station, George died on 13th of August 1915 at the age of 19. 

George was born at Lowestoft on 21 January 1896, a son of George Edward and Alice Maud Brown. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 12 February 1896 and his family lived at 2 Raglan Cottages. By 1901 his family was living at 66 Seago Street, Lowestoft. From 15 February 1904 George attended Saint Margaret's Boys School. By 1911 his family were living at 131 Rotterdam Road, Lowestoft, and George worked as a coal merchant's clerk. 

Horace Frank Buckler

A Private with the 1/8th Battalion, Horace died on 23rd of June 1917 at the age of 19. 

Horace was born at Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire, on 10 August 1897, a son of Henry Charles and Mary Guest Buckler. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Kirkley, on 27 February 1901, and his family lived at 305 London Road South, and this was still their address in 1911. Later his parents lived at 40 Marine Parade, Lowestoft.

Eileen Harriet Bunn

A Civilian, Eileen died on 17th of May 1941 at the age of 19. 

Eileen was born on the 4th May 1922, a daughter of Frank Sidney and Violet Bunn of 1 Vigilant Cottages Whapload Road Lowestoft. 

She died at 151 Queens Road, Nuneaton.

The 1939 Register shows that Eileen worked as a factory hand at a wire and cable factory in Lowestoft and subsequently she went to work at Nuneaton, Warwickshire. 

William Robert Burch

A Sailor with S.S. Wallsend (Newcastle-on-Tyne), William died on 2nd of December 1942 at the age of 19. Son of William Henry and Margaret Caroline Burch of Lowestoft Suffolk.

Frank Victor Burwood

A Sergeant with the 9th Battalion, Frank died on 16th of September 1916 at the age of 19. 

Henry Charles Butcher

A Private with 2nd Bn., Henry died on 30th of November 1917 at the age of 19. Son of Henrietta Butcher of London Road, Kessingland Lowestoft and the late Charles Butcher.

Roy Arthur Carr

An Ordinary Seaman with H.M.S. Bristol, Roy died on 21st of December 1944 at the age of 19. Son of Leonard Thomas Carr and Clara May Carr. of Lowestoft.

Frederick Albert Clarke

A Private with the 1/6th Battalion, Frederick died on 28th of August 1917 at the age of 19. 

Frederick was born at Pakefield on 11 May 1898, a son of George and Annie Maria Clarke. In 1901 his family lived at Cole’s Farm, Carlton Colville. Frederick attended Cunningham School from 9 February 1903 and his family lived at Kessingland Road. By 1911 they were living at 14 Coronation Terrace, Fir Lane.

Charles Ephraim Clarke

A Gunner with 145th Siege Battery. Charles died on 4th of June 1917.

Charles was born at Stradbroke, Suffolk, in 1897, a son of Edgar and Caroline Clarke. In 1901 his family lived at Church Lane, Stradbroke. In 1911 they lived at Chapel Cottages, Stradbroke, and Charles was an errand boy.

Charles' brother George Clarke lived at 21 Lothing Street, Oulton Broad Lowestoft.

Reginald Rowland Coates

Reginald Rowland Coates

A Private with 54th (1/1st East Anglian) Casualty Clearing Station, Reginald died on 13th of August 1915 at the age of 19. 

Reginald was born at Lowestoft in 1896, a son of William and Martha Coates. In 1901 his family lived at 76 Clapham Road, Lowestoft, and by 1911 they had moved to 39 Princes Road, Lowestoft. 

Reginald was living at 39 Princes Road when he volunteered and he joined the Army on 8 February 1915. He served with the local territorial unit of the Royal Army Medical Corps which became part of the 54th (1/1st East Anglian) Casualty Clearing Station. 

Duncan James Cockburn

A Telegraphist with H.M.S. Woolwich, Duncan died on 3rd of May 1940 at the age of 19. Son of Adam James Dott Cockburn and Ellen Cockburn of Lowestoft Suffolk.

Stanley Francis Coleman

A Private with the 1/4th Battalion, Stanley died on 18th of August 1916 at the age of 19.

Stanley was born at Lowestoft in 1896, a son of William Edward and Emily Jane Coleman. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 17 January 1897 and his family lived at 15 Edinburgh Road. By 1901 his family was living at Alpha Villa, 6 Ipswich Road, and this was still their address in 1911 when Stanley was a shipwright’s apprentice.

John Henry Collins

A Private with 3rd Bn., John died on 30th of November 1917 at the age of 19. Son of George and Annie Collins of 15 Grove Rd. Lowestoft.

Ivy May Cook

A Aircraftwoman 2nd Class with RAF Gloucester, Ivy died on 21st of April 1941 at the age of 19. 

Ivy was born at Lowestoft on 2 September 1921, a daughter of Herbert Anthony and Amy Mary Florence Cook.

In 1939 her family lived at 226 Denmark Road, Lowestoft, and Ivy worked at a canning factory.

Ivy joined the Women's Royal Air Force in early 1941 and served with the Technical Training Command. She became ill and was treated at hospital where she died of natural causes. She is buried at Normanston Drive Cemetery, Lowestoft. 

 

Sydney Francis Cooper

A Aircraftman 2nd Class with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, Sydney died on 30th of August 1946 at the age of 19. 

Son of Sydney Bertram and Ethel Blanche Cooper of Lowestoft.

Sydney joined the air force in late 1945 and was based at Grove, Berkshire.  

William  Cox

A Private with 1/4th Bn., William died on 16th of May 1915 at the age of 19. 

William was born at Holloway, London, in 1895, a son of George and Ellen Eliza Cox. In 1901 his family lived at Church Road, Kessingland, and by 1911 at 3 Wivenhoe Cottages, Florence Road, Pakefield, and William worked as a saw mill. Later his parents lived at 11 Florence Road, Pakefield, Lowestoft.

William volunteered and enlisted in the 1/4th Battalion Suffolk Regiment (Territorial Force) in March/April 1913.

CRIPPS Leonard Raymond

Leonard Raymond Cripps

An Ordinary Seaman with H.M.S. Ajax, Leonard died on 29th of May 1941 at the age of 19. Son of Walter William and Blanche Cripps of 14 Woods Loke Lowestoft.

Mary Emma Cross

A Civilian, Mary died on 13th of January 1942 at the age of 19. Daughter of Alfred and Bessie Lillian Cross of Council House Flixton. Died at London Road North.

George Alfred Crowe

A Sergeant with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, George died on 2nd of December 1943 at the age of 19. Son of Fred and Lily Maud Crowe of Carlton Colville Suffolk.

George was a Flight Engineer and served with 630 Squadron. He as a member of the crew of a Lancaster bomber that took off from East Kirby on a raid to Berlin. The aircraft crashed at Gross Schulzendorf and all the crew were killed.

A Stoker 1st Class with H.M.L.C.F. (L) 1, Henry died on 17th of August 1944 at the age of 19. Son of Henry G. W. and Bessie Duffield of Lowestoft Suffolk.

William Henry Dye

A Aircraftman 2nd Class with the Royal Air Force, William died on 5th of November 1939 at the age of 19. 

Son of William Youngs Dye and Alice Dye of Lowestoft.

William served with 38 Squadron. He was on board a Wellington bomber that was transporting ground staff personnel from RAF Marham to Barton Bendish when it crashed into a tree near Swaffham. 

Arthur William Dyke

A Deck Hand with H.M. Drifter Gleaner of the Sea. Arthur died on 26th of October 1916 at the age of 19.

Arthur was born at Lowestoft on 27 January 1897, a son of Abraham and Ellen Jane Dyke of 19 Lorne Road, Lowestoft.

John Samuel Eade

A Deck Hand with Steam Trawler Incentive (Lowestoft), John died on 28th of May 1915 at the age of 19.

John was born at Pakefield in 1895, a son of Lewis and Selina Eade. In 1901 his family lived at 84 Pakefield Street, Kirkley. In 1911 John lived with his maternal grandparents, John and Louisa Fisher, at 4 Wycombe Terrace, Saint George's Road, Kirkley. By 1915 his family were living at Morton Road, Lowestoft. Subsequently John's mother remarried and lived at 24 Morton Road, Lowestoft.

A Private with 7th Bn., Charles died on 14th of November 1916 at the age of 19. 

Charles was born at Norwich on 15 February 1897, a son of Henry William (Harry) and Sarah (Sally) Fitt. He was baptised at Saint James with Pockthorpe Church, Norwich, on 25 March 1897 and his family lived at 20 Cavalry Street, Norwich. In 1901 his family lived at 173 Sprowston Road, Norwich. By 1911 they were living at 3 Eden Street, Lowestoft, and Charles was an apprentice upholsterer. Later his parents lived at Eden Villa, 2 Eden Street, Lowestoft.
