Loose Dentures and Adhesive is not a Permanent solution
[dentaladhesivead.jpg]

There are many denture adhesives on the market designed to ‘grip’ your dentures, or partial dentures to the tissue of your mouth. For legal reasons we cannot use brand names but please read on.

These are in certain circumstances a very very useful product, particularly if you wish to have that bit of extra confidence for that special dinner or occasion BUT they are NOT a permanent or long term solution to a dental problem.

If your dentures are getting looser you need to seek professional guidance. One is aware of the cost of dental treatment nowadays, but it is also true that you tend to get what you pay for.

So why do dentures get loose in the first place?

If you have had immediate dentures provided that means extraction and fit, your dentures will get loose in certain circumstances very quickly and therefore should be seen as temporary.
As your mouth is a totally changing environment, dentures need to be replaced every three to four years.

If you lose weight, as a denture wearer, your oral tissues, in certain circumstances, can shrink, leading to loose fitting.

Those are the three most common reasons why your dentures will become ill-fitting.

What can I do about it?

The best solution is to get your dentures relined, this allows the new plastic of your denture to fit more snugly to your mouth’s current soft tissues.

What does it involve?

This is a simple procedure taking just a few days. An impression material is placed in your current denture which compensates for the shrinkage of your soft tissues, allowing an improved fit of the denture bearing area. This is then processed and the new acrylic base is fitted.
This can be a cheaper option than having new dentures provided, or even a couple of years supply of denture adhesive!

Denture teeth shading & gum colour
[001-005.jpg]
In dentistry, as in life, you get WHAT YOU PAY FOR - if it seems too good to be true - patient beware!

Photo left shows a patient with three different shades of teeth, canines are always darker, the two front teeth are lighter than the canines and the two laterals are even lighter. The gaps between the teeth represent the periodanal issues the patient had with their natural teeth and she wanted this reflected in the denture.
Pic b - As a child, this patient had orthodontic treatment in her youth. Sadly she is now a denture wearer. She requested that her new dentures were made to look like she looked, in her minds eye, before orthodontic treatment. she commented that her laterals crossed over her centrals. She wanted this character preserved with her new dentures.

This is purely decorative and has no physiological advantage other than the skill factor of the manufacture of this product.

This gentleman of Nigerian extraction, complaint about his dentures. “My gum tissue was never pink in origin” could we make him something with a much darker gum to match his natural gum tissue colour. At the time tints and shades were of limited availability, and this reflects one of my earlier results.

The crowning glory shows gold inlays, root staining, contouring and stippling, this is ultimate in aesthetics (dear reader - you can imagine how much extra work is needed to achieve such a result and has to be reflected in the final cost.

With this type of work your prosthesis may require up to 25 hours technical work in their manufacture. This helps lift the veil behind which such extraordinary work takes place. We are now being brainwashed by the white bleached smile, this as a maker of dental product is not always the nicest in aesthetics and can re seen as being to striking. Lipstick, smoking, drinks even chewing tobacco - all of these will effect your colour and your personal appearance.

Call us now for - Denture repair • Denture relining • Chemical cleaning • Disinfecting

What is Denture Relining? Over time the shape of your gums and the bones that support the dentures can change, which means they may no longer fit properly. Relining is a method of adjusting the internal part of the base of the dentures with an acrylic resin to correct their fit.

Ill-fitting Dentures

[illfitting.png]

Why? and what are my options?

These can occur for a variety of reasons

Shrinkage after extraction of teeth

You must expect shrinkage to occur when an immediate denture (after teeth extraction) has been fitted. When the situation has stabilised reassess possible options to improve - realign or a remake of the said prosthesis Immediate dentures should be deemed as temporary in most cases.

Age of denture

Dentures in a normal healthy mouth have a lifespan of 4-5 years before one starts to find additional problems, mainly loss of quality of fit, general wear to vertical dimension of the denture. In laymen’s terms - your bite!

A poor reproduction at impression stage

Any prosthesis(denture) is only as good as the original impression taken to be made on. Poor impression, poor detail of mouth results in a poor denture fit.

Weight loss

If you have a weight loss (dieting) your dentures (as well as your clothes) will be looser!

Medical issues e.g. chemo therapy

This can cause weight loss. It is always advisable to seek medical advice when this occurs.
It is worth remembering that the mouth is subtly changing environment for all of us. Ill fitting dentures can cause ulcers.

What are my options?

A quick fix scenario (and this is temporary) is the use of some soft lining materials to be fitted by a dental professional. In all honesty when shrinkage occurs what has just been mentioned is not a long term solution.
Most denture problems, other than fracture - slowly creep up on one and we slip into the denture fixative solutions as discussed these should be seen as temporary and not permanent
The best option would be to consider remaking the prosthesis. This would involve the retaking of impressions and a new denture supplied but will result in a more stable situation for you with dentures that fit well.
ps it is important that all prosthesis if all types have a yearly check that all is well with dentures and oral tissues. Ulcers should never be ignored as this could be an indicator for more general health issues.

Dear reader...

if any of these points, in the short article are applicable, I would be more than pleased to help you with any denture problems. I have been manufacturing and providing denture services for over four decades. Please contact me on the number below for further advice..

Teeth implants

<em?Choose an experienced team for best results

Discuss your options

There is a misconception that implants are the best solution for EVERYONE in EVERY circumstance. This is not the case and it requires every patient to be individually assessed and the best options recommended. Theses options include conventional crown and bridge work with partial chrome cobalt dentures (to fill the gaps), normal denture prosthesis or immediate dentures (extraction and fit). We look forward to discussing your dental options with you in the near future.

What are the benefits of implants?

Easier to eat with than dentures

Aesthetically more pleasing

More beneficial for the mouth

Better stability than dentures

“as you bite and chew, this strengthens the jawbone. Not only is this true for natural teeth it is also true for implants” explained Nigel Towner CDT.
When a patient is ‘edentulous’ (all their natural teeth have been lost), implants are a natural choice as they allow a complete row of bridges or crowns to be constructed dependent on the nature of the case.
Done well, by an experienced dental team, implants can give patients back confidence in their appearances and health is improved through being able to eat a wider choice of food.
But Nigel did inject a note of caution. “If a patient’s teeth are still intact then the option of fillings to the tooth or root should be explored to determine the best long term outcome - everybody is different.”

What are the costs?

They are certainly regarded as the higher end of the denture market, but done well you certainly get what you pay for. Allow between £2,000 to £5,000.

Other considerations

Whilst the vast majority of implants are successful, the procedure increases the importance of avoiding infection which can occur and damage the bone holding the implant in place. This is known as ‘peri-implantitis (not to be confused with ordinary gum disease) and can cause the implants to loosen. There is no consensus among experts in the field as to exactly what causes it but it highlights the need to have this procedure done by a qualified and experienced dental team, who operate to the highest standards and who are particular about client suitability. It is important to ensure that in each case there is enough jawbone to hold all the implants in place.
There is also a heightened obligation on the patient to practice a thorough dental hygiene regime and if relevant to consider giving up smoking.
When done well and on the right patients implants are a great option that can increase a person’s quality of life and improve their looks.

Your journey with us to new dentures

As with most journeys, there is a beginning middle and end.

Initially our receptionist will make your appointments and monitor your progress through our clinic. Then our nurse, will assists me with most of the processes at the chair side and not to forget, one person who is very important (but in the background), our Chrome technician (6-8 hours laboratory time dentures metal base).

If you have no roots, standing teeth or implants (non-dentate) I’m able to start immediately without prescription. on the construction of your dentures.
By law, if you have retained roots, teeth or implants (dentate), you’ll have to have a simple dental inspection , by one of our dentist colleagues, to confirm they are sound and in good order.

You are kept informed at every stage, after dental examination you will get a printed copy of costs and how many appointments (including any minor adjustments) will be needed to complete treatment.

This is typically 6 to 7 weekly appointments. I can assure you that seems a long time but goes very quickly in reality. We pride ourselves in ensuring every aspect of your treatment plan is carefully considered and fully explained.

Stages in your journey

First appointment includes inspection, diagnosis, discuss, prescription (if dentate)and cost and impressions.
Second appointment is the recording of your jaw relationship, and agree type and shade of teeth to be used.
Third appointment is try-in stage stage, where we look at your teeth in wax denture format to check the fit, and height of your bite (making alterations if required) and that you are happy with your new appearance. At this stage I may ask for your permission to proceed with completion of the dentures.
The resulting final hard acrylic resin-based denture (often involving 15 to 20 hours of skilled work) is then fitted on this fourth stage we will check muscle attachments extension or relationship et cetera and adjust if necessary.
The fifth appointment after fitting is to check that all is well and undertake any subtle adjustments if necessary this is quite usual and very important as it can make a big difference in the fit and comfort.
I promise a years guarantee on all items of work undertaken for you on the completed new dentures.

Repairs to other parties previous work is not covered by the above (new work) guarantee.

So in summary, if you fall into this category, it is
Patient clinical time - 4 hours
Laboratory time - 15-20 hours
If also a partial metal denture add a further 6-8 hours

So your treatment could easily involve over 30 hours of work time
