260541 raid
At 1840 hours on 26 May 1941, a single Do 17Z flying at 4-5,000 ft circled Lowestoft 2 or 3 times, dived to 1,500 ft and released 2 x heavy HE bombs. One scored a direct hit on a row of terraced houses, Nos 1-8 Woods Loke. Nos 4-8 were totally demolished. A crater 40 ft x 20 ft was formed where 5 and 6 stood. The 2nd bomb fell on allotments in very soft ground 40 yds away forming a crater 50 ft x 8 ft A few seconds before releasing its bombs the Do 17Z was engaged by vigorous AA gunfire but continued out to sea apparently undamaged. Casualties: 10 killed, 6 seriously injured, 4 slightly injured.
Jack Rose had an account from a survivor in Woods Loke but I have never seen a copy of it anywhere. CREDIT: Bob Collis
