120543 raid

On May 12, 1943, 24 German Focke-Wulf FW 190 fighter bombers carried out a low level dusk raid that caused major damage and 32 deaths. This raid was the biggest aimed at Lowestoft in the Second World War and also the most destructive, with 51 houses and premises destroyed and more than 1,000 damaged – passing into history as the Focke-Wulf raids. A Civilian, Edith died on 12th of May 1943 aged 59. Edith was born at King’s Lynn on 1 August 1883, a daughter of John and Georgina Barnaby. In 1891 her family lived at Valingers Place, King’s Lynn and in 1901 their address was 17 Valinger’s Place and Edith was an assistant in a draper’s shop. Edith moved to Lowestoft and in 1911 she lodged at 25 Clapham Road and was the manageress at a confectionery store.  120543 raid
A Civilian, Edward died on 12th of May 1943 at the age of 54. Edward was born at Kirkley in 1889, a son of John and Phoebe Ann Bessey. In 1891 his family lived at 94 Cambridge Road, Lowestoft and by 1901 at 143 Saint Margaret's Road, Lowestoft. By 1911 Edward was working as a jobbing gardener. On 25 May 1913 Edward married Maud Elizabeth Langley at Saint John's Church, Lowestoft. Edward was working as a window cleaner at the time. By 1921 they were living at 5 Saint Margaret's Plain, Lowestoft, and, at that time, Edward worked as a general labourer.  120543 raid
A Civilian, Alice died on 12th of May 1943 at the age of 51. Alice was born at Lowestoft on 6 October 1891, a daughter of Hyrum and Frances Rand. In 1901 her family lived at 4Gladstone Cottages, Tonning Street. By 1911 Alice was lodging with James and Caroline Reeve at 4 Raglan Cottages, Raglan Street, and Alice was a domestic servant.  120543 raid
A Civilian, Ethel died on 12th of May 1943 aged 57. Ethel was born at Lowestoft on 28 December 1885, a daughter of John William and Mary Ann Howes. Ethel was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 7 March 1886. In 1891 her family lived at 48 Cambridge Road and by 1901 they were living at 72 Tennyson Road. On 4 March 1906 Ethel married Charles Howes at Saint Peter’s Church, Kirkley. By 1911 they were living at 74 Tennyson Road. Charles served with the Royal Naval Reserve and died in 1917. In late 1917 Ethel lived at 58 Ipswich Road.  120543 raid
A Civilian, Edith died on 12th of May 1943 aged 59. Edith was born at Bedminster, Somerset, on 12 August 1883, a daughter of Thomas B and Clara Ann Thorn. In 1891 her family lived at 184 Coronation Road, Bedminster. By 1901 their home was at 18 Church Road, Bristol, and Edith was a boot shop assistant. In 1911 Edith’s family lived at 43 Kingston Road, Southville, Bristol. 120543 raid
A Civilian, Sidney died on 12th of May 1943 aged 52. Sidney was born at Great Yarmouth on 19 May 1890, a son of James Benjamin and Jane Gibbs. In 1891 his family lived at 7 Nelson Terrace, Great Yarmouth, and by 1901 their home was at 48 Market Place, Great Yarmouth. Sidney’s father became a publican and in 1911 Sidney’s family lived at The Vauxhall Tavern, Great Yarmouth, and Sidney worked as an electrician. By 1921 Sidney’s father was the publican at the Fox and Hounds, Filby. Sidney’s father died in 1934 and in 1939 his mother lived at 169 Lowestoft Road, Gorleston.   120543 raid
A Civilian, Beatrice died on 12th of May 1943 aged 67. Beatrice was born at Lowestoft on 11 December 1875, a daughter of Robert George and Emma Richard Dowsing. She was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 6 February 1876. In 1881 her family lived at Sparham’s Buildings, Saint Peter’s Street. In 1891 Beatice lived with her uncle and aunt, Charles and Mary Breach, and she worked as a beatster. In 1901 Beatrice lived with her parents, at 222 Clapham Road, and she was a net mender.     120543 raid
A Civilian, William died on 12th of May 1943 aged 62. William was born at Lowestoft on 31 March 1881, a son of John and Eleanor Eliza Utting. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 3 July 1881. In 1891 his family lived at 33 Raglan Street and later his parents lived at Springfield, Saint Margarets Road.In 1901 William had his own bakery and confectionary shop at 67-69 Saint Peter’s Street.  120543 raid
A Civilian, Lancelot died on 12th of May 1943 aged 30. Lancelot was born at Kessingland on 26 June 1912, a son of William John and Lucy Jane Wade. He was baptised at Saint Edmund’s Church, Kessingland, on 1 September 1912. His family lived at Ivy Nook, High Street, Kessingland, throughout his life. In 1939 Lancelot was an agricultural blacksmith and a member of the Home Guard.  120543 raid
A Civilian, Walter died on 12th of May 1943 at the age of 74. Walter was born at Fordham, Colchester, Essex, on 6 August 1868, and is believed to have been the son of George and Emma Waters.On 25 December 1889 Walter married Emma Jane Charlish at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft. Walter was a mariner living at Saint Margaret's Road and Emma lived at 152 High Street. In 1901 they lived at 38 Melbourne Road and Walter was a trawling master. In 1911 they lived at 68 Queens Road and Walter was a master mariner.  120543 raid
