Everard Ronald Theodosius Andrews

A Private with 2nd Bn., Everard died on 25th of September 1915 at the age of 18. 

Everard was born at Lowestoft in 1896, a son of Frederick James and Rachel Jessie Andrews. He was baptised at Saint John's Church, Lowestoft, on 18 December 1896, and his family lived at 14 Lawson Road, Lowestoft. In 1901 they lived at 14 Lawson Road. By 1911 they were living at 28 Salisbury Road, Lowestoft, and Everard was working as a boy in an engineer's shop in the 'motor industry'.

Francis Beedom Ayers

Francis Beedom Ayers

An Ordinary Seaman with H.M.S. Harvester, Francis died on 1st of June 1940 at the age of 18. 

Francis was born at Mells, Somerset, on 2 March 1922, a son of William Henry and Marguerite Mary Ayers. In 1921 his family had lived at 4 Vobslei Road, Mells, Frome, Somerset. By 1929 they were living at Corton and in 1939 their address was 1 Fair View, Corton. In 1939 Francis worked as an apprentice carpenter. 

Trixie Joyce Bolton

A Civilian, Trixie died on 6th of March 1941 aged 18. 

Trixie was born at Lowestoft on 17 October 1922, a daughter of Harry and Maggie Bolton. By 1939 her family were living at 155 The Avenue. In March 1941 Trixie was working at Lowestoft Public Library on Clapham Road. 

George Edward Brown

A Deck Hand with H.M. Armed Fishing Smack Ivanhoe, George died on 9th of January 1919 at the age of 18. 

George is believed to have been born at Lowestoft on 12 January 1901, a son of Agnes Emily Brown. In 1901 George, and his mother, lodged at 36 Arnold Street. During 1904 George’s mother married Benjamin Norman. On 11 October 1904 he became a pupil at Cunningham School and his family lived at 9 Wellington Road. He left Cunningham School on 15 June 1910 as his family had moved into Lowestoft. In 1911 his family lived at 32 Haward Street. 

Samuel Robert Burwood

A Deck Hand with H.M. Trawler Anworth, Samuel died on 10th of December 1916 at the age of 18. 

Samuel was born at Lowestoft on 9 January 1898, a son of Samuel Robert and Maria Burwood. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 6 February 1898 and his family lived at 281 Raglan Street. Later his family would live at 299 Raglan Street, Lowestoft. 

Frederick George Carter

An Ordinary Seaman with H.M.S. Curacoa, Frederick died on 24th of April 1940 aged 18. 

Frederick was born at Lowestoft on 1 November 1921, a son of Charles William and Margaret Gladys Carter. In 1939 his family lived at 26 Hill Road.

Ernest Charles Challis

A Deck Hand with H.M. Trawler Silver King, Ernest died on 21st of January 1919 at the age of 18. 

Ernest was born at Lowestoft on 16 February 1900, a son of Ernest Charles and Clara Selina Challis. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Kirkley, on 18 March 1900 and his family lived at 24 Southwell Road. In 1901 they lived at Jarvis Buildings, Carlton Colville, and in 1911 at 43 Southwell Road. Later Ernest’s parents lived at 7 Lovewell Road. 

Herbert Edward Chapman

A Deck Hand, Herbert served with the Royal Naval Reserve and was the only survivor when the Drifter Persistive was blown up by a mine on 9 February 1916. 

Herbert was born at Pakefield on 14 June 1897, a son of Albert S. and Hannah Chapman. Herbert was baptised at All Saints’ Church, Pakefield, in 1897. In 1901 his family lived at 9 Church Street, Pakefield. 

Herbert was living at 9 Church Street, Pakefield, when he joined the Royal Naval Reserve on 11 January 1915, number 3227 DA, and he served as a Deck Hand on the Drifter Persistive from 15 January 1916.

Jack Frederick Clarke

A Civilian, Jack died on 9th of April 1941 aged 18. 

Jack was born at Lowestoft on 1 September 1922, a son of Bertie Frederick and Rose Clarke. He was baptised at Saint John’s Church on 22 September 1922 and his family lived at 23 Payne Street. By 1939 they were living at 100 Rotterdam Road and Jack worked at a factory making tinned rations.

Jack, his parents, two of his brothers, and several neighbours were killed in an air raid when a bomb hit the air raid shelter, at 100 Rotterdam Road, where they were taking cover.  

Alfred Thomas Cook

A Deck Hand with H.M.S. Q20., Alfred died on 29th of March 1917 at the age of 18. 

Alfred was born at Lowestoft on 21 December 1898, a son of Joseph and Sabina Cook. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 13 January 1899, and his family lived at 3 Cook’s Buildings. In 1911 they were still living at 3 Cooke’s Buildings, but in 1915 their address was 2 Cooke’s Buildings. Later his family lived at 16 Waveney Terrace, Whapload Road.

CRIPPS Leonard Raymond

Leonard Raymond Cripps

An Ordinary Seaman with H.M.S. Ajax, Leonard died on 29th of May 1941 aged 18. 

Leonard was born at Lowestoft on 29 October 1922, a son of Walter William and Blanche Cripps. His family lived at 19 Princes Road before moving to 14 Wood’s Loke. 

Leonard served with H.M.S. Ajax. In August 1940 the Ajax was assigned to the Mediterranean for convoy duties. On 21 May 1941 the ship was involved in the Battle of Cape Matapan and then took part on operations to evacuate troops from Crete. It was during this latter operation that Leonard was killed.    

Arthur John Cullingford

A Private with the 2/7th Battalion, Arthur died on 9th of September 1917 at the age of 18.

Arthur was born at Oulton Broad in 1898, a son of Edward and Emma Cullingford. He was baptised at Saint Mark’s Church, Oulton Broad, on 13 July 1899. In 1901 his family lived at the grocer’s shop, Bridge Road, Oulton Broad, and this was still their home in 1911.

Walter Cullum

Walter Frederick George Cullum

A Lance Corporal with 50th Company, Walter died on 2nd of March 1916 at the age of 18. 

Walter was born at Lowestoft in 1897, a son of Walter William and Agnes Ann Cullum. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 27 August 1897. His family lived at 24 Crown Street and by 1901 they were living at 34 Mariners Street. By 1911 Walter's family were living at 80 Queens Road, Lowestoft, and Walter worked as a fish hawker.

Albert Daines

A Private with the 5th Battalion, Albert died on 9th of October 1944 aged 18. 

Albert was born at Lowestoft on 23 July 1926, a son of Edward and Edith Daines. In 1939 his family lived at 3 Malletts Opening, Mariners Street, Lowestoft.

In early October 1944 the 5th Battalion, as part of 152 Brigade, were in positions in the vicinity of Best, near Eindhoven. The Germans shelled Best during 9 October and on the night of 9-10 October enemy mortars were very active. 

Alfred William Daniels

A Stoker 1st Class with H.M.S. Scott, Alfred died on 15th of August 1918 at the age of 18. 

Alfred was born at Fritton on 13 October 1899, a son of Alfred William and Emma Kett Daniels. He was baptised at Fritton on 26 November 1899, and his family lived at Fritton. In 1901 his family lived at 45 England Lane, Gorleston, and by 1911 they were living at 15 Lothing Street, Lowestoft.  

In 1917 Alfred married Dorothy Ann Boyce: this was registered in the Mutford district. By 1918 Dorothy was living at 2 Run Cottages, Flixton, Lowestoft. 

Albert Edward Dare

A Private with 1st East Anglian Field Ambulance, Albert died on 22nd of October 1915 at the age of 18. 

Albert was born at Kirkley on 15 June 1897, a son of Joseph and Harriett Dare. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Kirkley, on 25 July 1897. In 1901 his family lived at 18 Lawson Road, Kirkley, which was Albert’s home throughout his life. 

Albert volunteered and enlisted in the Royal Army Medical Corps. He was enlisted at Ipswich. He served with the 1st East Anglican Field Ambulance, part of the 29th Division.

Arthur George Dennant

A Seaman Steward with H.M. Trawler Kingston Cornelian. Arthur died on 5th of January 1940 at the age of 18. 

Arthur was born at Lowestoft on 8 August 1921, a son of Harry George and Betsy Susannah Dennant. His family lived at 40 Raglan Street and later his parents lived at Blundeston.  

On 5 January 1940 the Kingston Cornelain was in the Strait of Gibraltar. The trawler was in a collision with the French merchant ship Chella. The trawler sank very quickly with the loss of all seventeen crew, including Arthur. 

Leslie Kenneth Dyke

A Civilian, Leslie died on 16th of February 1941 aged 18. 

Leslie was born at Lowestoft on 24 February 1922, a son of Herbert Edwin and Ada Maud Dyke. He was baptised at Saint John’s Church on 12 May 1922, and his family lived at 7 Florence Road, Pakefield. They were still living at 7 Florence Road in 1939 when Leslie worked as an electrician.   

On 16 February 1941 Leslie was at Jewsons Yard, Belvedere Road, when an air raid took place and Leslie was killed. 

Leslie was buried at Kirkley Cemetery on 22 February 1941. 

Megan Barbara Edmonds

A Civilian, Megan died on 13th of January 1942 at the age of 18. 

Megan was born at Lowestoft on 6 January 1924, a daughter of William Bertie and Gladys Edmonds. In 1939 her family lived at 67 Lorne Park Road. 

Megan died at London Road North during the Waller Raid.

Robert Allen Fiske

A Bandsman with the 14th (King’s) Hussars, Robert died on 8th of July 1918 at the age of 18. 

Robert was born at Lowestoft on 25 May 1900, a son of Charles and Laura E. Fiske. Robert was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Kirkley, on 1 July 1900 and his family lived at 29 Grosvenor Road. Robert attended Kirkley School from 16 September 1903. By 1911 Robert’s father had died and his family lived at 28 Kirkley Cliff Road. Later his mother lived at 2 Beccles Road.   

Harold Charles Forder

A Driver with D Battery, 242nd Brigade, died on 23rd of September 1917 at the age of 18. 

Harold was born at Lowestoft on 29 March 1898, a son of Charles and Elizabeth Adaline Forder. He was baptised at Saint Peter's Church, Kirkley, on 2 November 1900, and his family lived at 86 Carlton Road. In 1901 his family lived at 5 Clement Square, Kirkley. By 1911 they were living at The Market Place, Loddon and later his mother lived at New Road, Acle, Norfolk. 

Wilfred Edward Foulger

A Private with 7th Bn., Wilfred died on 2nd of October 1915 at the age of 18. 

Wilfred was born at Covehithe in June 1897, a son of Robert George and Amy Georginanna Foulger. He was baptised at Saint Andrews Church, Covehithe, on 17 July 1898.

In 1901 his family lived at Jarvis Terrace, Carlton Colville, and by 1911 at 6, Epsom Terrace, Kirkley. (Later they would like at 6 Groom Terrace Kirkley Run Lowestoft).

Walter Harry Friston

A Private with 4th Bn., Walter died on 21st of August 1918 at the age of 18. 

Walter was born at Gorleston in 1899, a son of Harry and Sophia Ellen Friston. In 1901 his family lived at 12 Nile Road, Gorleston. By 1911 they were living at 6 Bells Marsh Road, Gorleston. Later they lived at 566 London Road, Lowestoft.

Walter enlisted in the Army at Ipswich. Initially he joined the 53rd Battalion Training Reserve, number TR/LON/136130. He was then transferred to the Royal Fusiliers and he served with the 4th Battalion in France from 14 July 1918. 

Leonard Godbold

An Ordinary Seaman with H.M.S. Jaguar, Leonard died on 26th of March 1942 aged 18. 

Leonard was born at Lowestoft on 5 March 1924, a son of George Frederick and Miriam Jane Godbold. In 1939 his family lived at 103 Oxford Road.

Frank Hunt

A Deck Hand with H.M. Drifter Tuberose, Francis died on 31st of August 1916 at the age of 18. 

Francis, also known as Frank, was born at Lowestoft on 19 June 1897, a son of Arthur Albert and Clara Hunt. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 18 August 1897, and his family lived at 34 Haward Street, Lowestoft. In 1901 his family lived at 1 Florence Place, Saint John’s Road, Lowestoft. By 1911 they were living at Oulton Road, and by 1915 at 3 Oulton Street, Lowestoft. 

James Johnstone

A Private with the 53rd Battalion, James died on 23rd of October 1918 aged 18.

James was born at Lowestoft on 21 July 1900, a son of James and Emma Johnstone. In 1901 his family lived at Florence House, 1 Ashby Road, and this was still their home in 1911. James became a pupil at Lowestoft School of Science on 18 April 1910. By 1921 his family lived at 88 Denmark Road.   

James enlisted in the Army at Bury St. Edmonds. He served with the 53rd (Young Soldier) Battalion of the Royal Sussex Regiment, a recruit basic training unit based at Aldershot.  

Robert Herbert Leathes

A Second Lieutenant with B Battery, 62 Brigade, Robert died on 19th of April 1917 at the age of 18. 

Robert was born at Battle, Sussex, on 27 July 1898, a son of Herbet de Mussenden and Agnes Isabel Leathes. In 1901 his family lived at Tiddington Street, Tiddington, Albury, Oxfordshire. Later his family lived at Herringfleet Hall.

A Private with 54th (1/1st East Anglian) Casualty Clearing Station, Claude died on 13th of August 1915 at the age of 18. 

Claude was born at Lowestoft in 1896, a son of John and Ada Leeds. In 1901 his family lived at 9 Sandringham Road, Lowestoft. By 1911 they had moved to 3 Sandringham Road, and Claude worked as a butcher.

A Lance Corporal with 2/1st Bucks Bn. Walter died on 22nd of August 1917 at the age of 18. 

Walter was born at Keswick, Norwich on 31 July 1898, a son of Robert Herbert and Catherine Ann Littlewood. He was baptised at Saint Andrew's Church, Eaton, Norwich, on 31 August 1898 and his family lived at Keswick. In 1901 his family were living at Bell Road, Carlton Colville, and by 1911 they were living at Ingate Lodge Cottage, Cotmer Road, Oulton Broad.

John Kimberley Lown

A Private with 6th Bn. John died on 18th of September 1918 at the age of 18. 

John was born at Blundeston in 1900, a son of Walter and Clara Lown. He was baptised at Saint Mary's Church, Blundeston, on 6 May 1900. In 1901 his family lived at Cottages, Church Path, Blundeston. Later they lived at Flixton Road, Blundeston. 

John enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft. Initially he served with The Buffs (East Kent Regiment), service number 27034, before being transferred to The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment) and being posted to the 6th Battalion. 

Frederick George Lumsdaine

A Deck Hand with sailing trawler Chrysolite (Lowestoft), Frederick died on 4th of July 1917 at the age of 18. 

Frederick was born at Lowestoft in 1898, a son of Robert Willis and Margaret Ellen Lumsdaine. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 25 November 1898 and his family lived at The Beach. His parents married in 1900 and his younger half-siblings all had the surname Willis. In 1901 his family lived at 3 Lincoln’s Buildings, The Beach. By 1911 his family were living at 1 Lincoln’s Buildings, Whapload Road, and later at 194 Clapham Road.

Christopher Monckton

Christopher Monckton

A Second Lieutenant with 13 Squadron, Christopher died on 1st of July 1916 at the age of 18. 

Christopher was born at Hilton, near Bridgnorth, Shropshire, on 4 April 1898, a son of Arthur and Lady Gertrude Moncton. Christopher’s maternal grandfather was the 4th Earl of Radnor. He was baptised at Worfield, Shropshire, on 24 April 1898. In 1901 his family lived at Hilton House, Worfield, and, by 1911, were living at Normanston Hall, Beccles Road, Lowestoft. His family also had a house at 29 Queen’s Road, Saint John’s Wood, London.

A Private with D Company, 8th Bn., Percy died on 25th of September 1915 at the age of 18. 

Percy was born at Lowestoft in 1896, a son of Charles and Jane Neve. In 1901 his family lived at Bishops Buildings, Mariners Street, Lowestoft. By 1911 Percy’s father had died and his family lived at 3 Mariners Street, Lowestoft, and Percy was a butcher’s boy. Percy's mother later remarried at lived at 15 Albany Road, Lowestoft.

William Herbert Cook Newrick

A Deck Hand with H.M. Drifter Jeannie Murray, William died on 15th of February 1918 at the age of 18. 

Henry John Pearman

A Private with the 7th Battalion, Henry died on 12th of October 1916 at the age of 18. 

Henry was born at Ashby in 1897, a son of Arthur and Eliza Pearman. In 1901 his family lived at The Dell, Ashby, and this was still their home in 1911.

Henry volunteered and enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft in later September/early October 1914. He joined the Suffolk Regiment, service number 1493, and served with the 6th (Cyclist) Battalion. Harry was posted to the 7th Battalion in France, with service number 43084.

George Stanley Pittman

A Private with the 2nd Battalion, George died on 13th of July 1916 at the age of 18. 

George was born at Bow, London, on 8 October 1897, a son of George Samuel and Kate Pittman. He was baptised at Bow Road Methodist Church on 19 December 1897 and his family lived at 41 Alfred Street, Bow. By 1901 George’s mother had died. In 1902 George’s father married Eliza Louise Clarke and by 1911 they were living at 21 Royal Avenue, Lowestoft. In 1911 George lived with his uncle and aunt, James and Daisy Anderson, at 77 Ranelegh Road, East Ham. 

Arthur Victor Porter

Arthur Victor Porter

A Private with 7th Bn., Arthur died on 4th of October 1915 at the age of 18. 

Arthur was born at Lowestoft in 1897, a son of George and Emily Porter. In 1901 his family lived at 81 Wollaston Road, Lowestoft, and this was still their home in 1911. 

Arthur volunteered and enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft. He joined the Suffolk Regiment and was posted to the 7th Battalion. He arrived in France with the 7th battalion on 30 May 1915. 

William Gerald Powell

An Aircraft Apprentice with No 1 School of Technical Training, William died on 10th of August 1941 at the age of 18. 

William was born at Lowestoft on 16 January 1923, a son of William Henry and Georgina Honor Powell. In 1939 his family lived at 32 Seago Street, and William worked as an assistant to a coach body maker. He was also an A.R.P. messenger at his works.

William was under training with No 1 Wing, No 1 School of Technical Training and was killed whilst at home on leave. CREDIT:Malcolm Barrass

James William Quantrill

A Deck Hand with H.M. Drifter Ocean Fisher, James died on 16th of June 1918 at the age of 18. 

James was born at Poplar, London, on 27 November 1899, note, however, that his Royal Naval Reserve service record states that he was born at Gainsborough, Lincolnshire. He was a son of George Edward and Rebecca Martha Quantrill. In 1901 his family lived at 170 Manchester Road, Poplar. By 1911 they were living at 17 High Street, Lowestoft, and this was still their home in 1915. See house on LowestoftOldAndNow.org

Herbert James Read

A Seaman with H.M.S. Carnarvon, Herbert died on 17th of July 1916 at the age of 18. 

Herbert was born at Lowestoft on 2 July 1898, a son of James and Mary Read. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 21 September 1898 and his family lived at 7 Old Market Street. By 1911 they were living at Brickyard Cottages, Oulton Broad.

Herbert worked in the merchant navy before he joined the Royal Naval Reserve on 12 November 1914. He served on the trawler Clifton. On 7 August 1915 he joined the trawler Ardent and, from 14 August 1915, he served on H.M.S. Carnarvon.
