Sidney William Bunn
A Private, Sidney died on 15th of June 1915 at the age of 24.
Sidney was born at Carlton Colville in 1890, a son Albert and Harriet Mary Bunn. He was baptised at Saint Peter's Church, Carlton Colville, on 25 January 1891. In 1891 his family lived at Eades Farm Cottages, Marsh Lane, Carlton Colville. By 1901 they were living at Burnt Hill, Carlton Colville, and in 1911 at Marsh Lane, Carlton Colville, and Albert was a farm labourer. Later his parents lived at 57 Kimberley Road, Lowestoft.
Thomas Clarke
A Lance Corporal with the 1st Battalion, Thomas died on 25th of February 1917 at the age of 38.
Thomas was born at Bungay in 1879, a son of George and Catherine (Kate) Clarke. In 1891 his family lived at Saint Mary’s Terrace, Flixton Road, Bungay. By 1900 they were living at 3 Windsor Terrace, Bungay, and Thomas worked as a labourer.
William Walter Cole
A Private with 1st Bn., William died on 21st of June 1915 at the age of 35.
William was born at Ellough, near Beccles, in 1879, a son of William Walter and Harriett Cole. He was baptised at All Saints' Church, Ellough, on 7 September 1879. In 1881 his family lived at Ellough. By 1891 they were living at Beccles Road, Barnby, and William was a farm servant. In 1901 they lived at Barnby Green, Barnby, and William was fisherman. Later his parents lived at 2 Beanes Cottages, Kessingland.
Arthur Harry Dale
A Private with 1st Bn., Arthur died on 28th of May 1915 at the age of 20.
Arthur was born at Lowestoft on 4 May 1895, a son of William and Eliza Dale. In 1901 his family lived at Pope’s Farm House, Norwich Road, Lowestoft. Later his parents lived at 2 Norfolk Street, Lowestoft.
Arthur volunteered and enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft. He joined the Suffolk Regiment, service number 16532. He was posted to the 1st Battalion and arrived in France on 1 April 1915.
Ernest Herbert Dale
A Private with 1st Bn., Ernest died on 8th of May 1915 at the age of 27.
Ernest was born at Lowestoft on 7 June 1888, a son of Frederick and Charlotte Elizabeth Dale. In 1891 his family lived at 60 West Bevan Street, Lowestoft. From 11 October 1897 Ernest attended Saint John's School, Lowestoft, and his family lived at 14 Stanford Street. By 1901 they were living at 73 Wollaston Road. In 1911 his family lived at 61 Norwich Road and, later, at 34 Windsor Road Lowestoft.
Thomas Percy Fisher
A Lance Sergeant with the 1st Battalion, Thomas died on 5th of July 1918, at the age of 25.
Thomas was born at Norwich on 14 February 1893, a son of Thomas and Selina Fisher. In 1901 his family lived at 4 Church Close, Heigham, Norwich, and by 1911 they had moved to live at 1 Mill Lane, Pakefield.
Thomas worked as a steam sawyer before enlisting in the Army, joining the Suffolk Regiment. He initially enlisted in 1910 and the 1911 Census shows him with the 2nd Battalion at Aldershot.
Robert James Garwood
A Private with 1st Bn., Robert died on 24th of April 1915 at the age of 33.
Robert was born at Toft Monks, near Haddiscoe, in 1881, a son of Frederick and Elizabeth Garwood. In 1881 his family lived at Haddiscoe and by 1891 were living at 9 Brickfield Cottages, Somerleyton.
On 18 May 1902 Robert married Edith Gertrude Spooner at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft. Robert was a labourer and they both lived at 13 Arnold Street. By 1911 they were living at 76 Stanford Street, Lowestoft, and Robert worked as a labourer for the Great Eastern Railway.
Gordon Hedley Jarvis
A Private with the 1st Battalion, Gordon died on 28th of June 1944 aged 19.
Gordon was born at Lowestoft on 27 November 1924, a son of Frederick and Emma Florence Jarvis. In 1939 his family lived at 2 Walmer Road and Gordon was a carpenter’s apprentice.
Gordon joined the Suffolk Regiment and served with the 1st Battalion in France. His battalion landed at Sword Beach on D-Day and went on to attack, and take, German positions at Colleville-sur-Orne before moving to a position near the Periers Ridge.
Hugh Knights
A Private with the 1st Battalion, Hugh died on 23rd of October 1944 aged 24.
Hugh was born at Chillesford, Suffolk, on 20 September 1920, a son of Harry and Elizabeth Knights. In 1921 his family lived at The Street, Chillisford. By 1939 their address was ‘Rear of the Fire Station’, Saint Peter’s Street, Lowestoft, and Hugh was an assistant at a hardware store.
William Henry Linder
A Private with 1st Bn., William died on 24th of April 1915 at the age of 23.
William was born at Lowestoft on 29 November 1891, a son of Samuel Joseph and Minnie Linder. He was baptised at Saint Peter's Church, Kirkley, on 3 January 1892. In 1901 his family were living at 71 Lawson Road, Lowestoft. By 1911 William's father had died and William worked as a clothier's shop assistant. In September 1914 he worked for Mr. Thomas Foort, clothier, High Street, Lowestoft.
Ramsey Walter Mantripp
A Private with 1st Bn., Ramsey died on 7th of May 1915 at the age of 37.
Ramsey was born at Lowestoft in 1876, a son of Edmund and Elizabeth Mantripp. Note that in some records his first name is given as Ramsey, or Ramey, and in others as Raymond. In 1881 his family lived at 22 North Raglan Street, Lowestoft. By 1891 they were living at 23 Jacob's Street.
Robert George Morris
A Lance Corporal with 1st Bn., Robert died on 25th of May 1915 at the age of 19.
Robert was born at Laxfield, Suffolk, on 14 October 1895, a son of Charles and Alice Morris. He was baptised at All Saints’ Church, Laxfield, on 26 April 1896. In 1901 his family lived at High Street, Laxfield. By 1911 they were living at 1 Love Road, Lowestoft, and Robert was a stockbroker’s clerk. Later his family lived at 79 Sussex Road, Lowestoft, and afterwards at 27 Culver Road, Wokingham Road, Reading Berkshire.
Herbert Ernest Robinson
A Private with 1st Bn., Herbert died on 3rd of October 1915 at the age of 25.
Herbert was born at Lowestoft on 5 July 1890, a son of Edward and Rebecca Robinson. He was baptised at Christchurch, Lowestoft, on 6 August 1890, and his family lived at 44 Clemence Street. By 1911 Herbert's father had died and his family lived at 35 Beckham Road. At that time Herbert worked as a brick maker's labourer. Subsequently Herbert's mother lived at 49 Trafalgar Street, Lowestoft.
William Rushmere
A Private with 1st Bn, William died on 25th of May 1915 at the age of 33. Son of Charles Rushmere.
William was born at Kirkley in 1882, a son of Charles and Caroline Rushmere. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Kirkley, on 15 April 1881. His family lived at 22 Lovewell Terrace, Kirkley. By 1891 they were living at 56 Clement Square, Lowestoft, but the 1891 Census shows William and his father at Hoford Barn, West Tilbury (his father was from Tilbury). By 1901 William’s father had died, his family lived at 6 Marine Cottages, Kirkley, and William was a bricklayer.
Abiah Sabberton
A Private with 1st Bn., Abiah died on 25th of April 1915 at the age of 33.
Abiah's actual first name was Obadiah
Abiah was born at Lowestoft in 1882, a son of (Samuel) Richard and Mary Ann Sabberton. In 1891 his family lived at 7 Stevens Street, Lowestoft, and in 1901 were still living at 7 Stevens Street and Abiah worked as a quay labourer.
Between 1899 and 1903 Abiah served in the Suffolk Artillery Militia.
Frederick James Soanes
A Private with 1st Bn., Frederick died on 25th of May 1915 at the age of 20.
Frederick was born at Corton in 1894, a son of Charles and Sarah Soanes. In 1901 his family lived at High Street, Corton. By 1911 his parents were living at 3 Poplar Cottages, Corton.
Frederick volunteered and enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft. He joined the Suffolk Regiment. He was posted to the 1st Battalion and arrived in France on 18 May 1915 to join the Battalion.
Bertram Henry Tarbox
A Private with 1st Bn., Bertram died on 21st of April 1915 at the age of 33.
Bertram was born at Norwich in 1882, a son of James Clifford and Elizabeth H. Tarbox. In 1891 they lived at 1 Fye Bridge, Norwich. By 1901 they had moved to Lowestoft and lived at 8 York Road, and Bertram worked as a stable assistant/groom.
On 17 January 1907 Bertram married Elizabeth Cook at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft. Bertram was a fisherman living at 61 Wollaston Road, and Elizabeth lived at 51 Reeve Street. By 1911 their home was at 63 Edinburgh Road, Lowestoft.
George Francis Thompson
A Corporal with 1st Battalion, George died on 25th of May 1940 aged 26.
George was born at Lowestoft on 12 March 1914, a son of Harry and Georgeanna Thompson. He was baptised at Christ Church, Lowestoft, on 10 May 1914 and his family lived at 112 Carlton Road and this was still their home in 1921. By 1939 his family were living at 98 Blackheath Road, Kirkley.
George served with the Suffolk Regiment as part of the British Expeditionary Force that went to France in late 1939. His battalion was part of the 3rd Division commanded by Major-General Bernard Montgomery.
Frederick James Willgoss
A Private with 1st Bn., Frederick died on 4th of May 1915 at the age of 22.
Frederick was born at Lowestoft on 12 August 1892, a son of Charles and Hannah Harriet Willgoss. He was baptised at Christchurch, Lowestoft, on 31 August 1892 and his family lived at 19 Christchurch Square. By 1911 his family were living at 9 Spurgeon's Score and Frederick was a herring fisherman. Later his mother lived at 12 Waveney Terrace, Whapload Road, Lowestoft.

Basil Owen Coleby
A Lance Corporal with the 2/6th (Cyclist) Battalion, Basil died on 21st of April 1918 at the age of 26.
Basil was born at Lowestoft on 2 July 1891, a son of William and Sarah Coleby. In 1901 his family lived at 261 Raglan Street. By 1911 Basil’s family were living at 7 Selby Street, and Basil worked as a fish curer.
Before the First World War Basil served with the 1st Norfolk Royal Garrison Artillery (Territorial Force) for fifteen months.
William John Stannard
A Private with the 2/6th (Cyclist) Battalion, William died on 27th of July 1916 at the age of 32.
William was born at Cookley, Suffolk, in 1884, a son of John and Emily Stannard. In 1891 his family lived at 3 Edinburgh Road. By 1901 they were living at 7 Ipswich Road and William was a journeyman blacksmith.
In 1907 William married Lily Emma Field. There wedding seems to have taken place at Frostenden. In 1911 they lived at 41 Sussex Road and William was a tramway motorman for Lowestoft Borough Council. Later Lily lived at 17 Morton Road.
Clifford Victor Wren
A Private with 2/6th (Cyclist) Bn. Clifford died on 4th of November 1914 at the age of 23.
Clifford was born at Lowestoft in 1891, a son of Edward John and Clara Wren (formerly Sandwell). He was baptised at Saint John's Church, Lowestoft, on 6 December 1891 and his family lived at Henry Street. By 1901 his family were living at 128 Denmark Road, Lowestoft, and this was still their home in 1911 when Clifford worked as a fish salesman's clerk.

Alfred John Adams
A Private with the 2nd Battalion, Alfred died on 18th of August 1916 at the age of 34.
Alfred was born at Kessingland in 1883, a son John and Harriet Adams. In 1891 his family lived at a ‘cottage by Moss Road’ (sic), Kessingland. By 1901 they were living at Barn Road, Kessingland, and Alfred was a yardman on a farm. In 1911 they were still living at Barn Road, Kessingland, and Alfred was a farm labourer.
Alfred enlisted in the Army at Bury St. Edmunds. He served with the Suffolk Regiment, service number 26788. William went to France in 1916 to join the 2nd Battalion.
Charles William Aldred
A Private with the 2nd Battalion, Charles died on 28th of March 1918 at the age of 23.
Charles was born at Carlton Colville in 1894, a son of William and Charlotte Jane Aldred. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Carlton Colville, on 28 April 1895. In 1901 his family lived at The Street, Blundeston, and this was still their address in 1911 when Charles worked as a farm labourer. Later his parents lived at 2 Crossway Cottages, Corton.
William Alexander Balls
A Private with 2nd Bn., William died on 13th of November 1916 at the age of 19.
William was born at Lowestoft in 1897 a son of Arthur Nathaniel and Emma E. Balls. In 1901 his family lived at 29 Cambridge Road, Lowestoft, and by 1911 they were living at 70 Ipswich Road, Lowestoft.
William enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft. He joined the Suffolk Regiment and served in France with the 2nd Battalion.

Walter Henry Balls
A Private with 2nd Bn., Walter died on 5th of September 1918 at the age of 20.
Walter was born at Pakefield on 9 March 1898, a son of Richard Henry and Laura Balls. In 1901 his family lived at 2 Homestead Row, Pakefield, and later at Bourne Terrace. Walter's mother died in 1903 and in 1907 his father married Lily Knights. In 1911 his family lived at 76 Saint George's Road, Lowestoft.
Walter attended Cunningham Infant School from 15 April 1901 until 8 February 1907, when he became a pupil at Morton Road School.
Ernest Alfred Bennett
A Private with the 2nd Battalion, Ernest died on 24th of January 1916 at the age of 29.
Ernest was born at Worlingham in 1886, a son of Alfred and Mary Ann Bennett. He was baptised at Worlingham on 25 April 1886. In 1891 his family lived at Haithe Road (sic), Worlingham, and by 1901 were living at Wingfield Road, Bungay, and Ernest worked as an apprentice harness maker. Later Ernest's father became a publican.
John Charles Breach
A Private with the 2nd Battalion, John died on 26th of August 1914 at the age of 30.
John was born at Lowestoft on 30 July 1884, a son of Henry (Harry) and Maria Breach. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church in 1884. In 1891 his family lived at 18 Haward Street and in 1901 at the Waggon and Horses Public House, Rant Score East, and John was a general labourer. Later his parents lived at 2 Cooks Buildings, Whapload Road.
Arthur William Budds
A Private with the 2nd Battalion, Arthur died on 23rd of September 1918 aged 20.
Arthur was born at Lowestoft on 28 January 1898, a son of Walter Alexander and Matilda Ann Budds. He was baptised at Saint John’s Church on 6 March 1898 and his family lived at 5 Norwich Road. In 1901 his family lived at 57 Stanley Street, and this was Arthur’s home for the rest of his life. Arthur was a pupil at Hervey Street School and then joined Saint John’s School on 1 February 1905. In 1911 Arthur was a shoemaker’s errand boy.
William Austin Chandler
A Private with the 2nd Battalion, William died on 18th of June 1917 at the age of 34.
William was born at Lowestoft in 1883, a son of George William and Eliza Chandler. His family lived at 16 Thurston Road, but have not been found in the 1891 and 1901 censuses.
On 14 October 1905, William married Florence Alice Read at Saint Peter’s Church, Kirkley. William was a labourer and they both lived at Kirkley. In 1911 they lived at ‘rear of 41’ Thurston Road, and William was an assistant bailiff at the County Court. Later Florence lived at 11 Southwell Road.
Victor Burkett Crosswell
A Lance Corporal with the 2nd Battalion, Victor died on 28th of March 1918 at the age of 21.
Victor was born at Portsmouth on 11 June 1897, a son of Daniel and Louisa Crosswell. He was baptised at All Saints’ Church, Portsea, on 25 June 1897 and his family lived at 86 Dicken’s Road. In 1901 they lived at 30 Baker Street, Portsmouth.
Reginald Curtis
A Private with the 2nd Battalion, Reginald died on 17th March 1917.
Reginald was born at Norwich on 24 May 1896, a son of Frederick and Clara Curtis. He was baptised at Saint Andrews Church, Eaton, Norwich, on 26 July 1896, and his family lived at Eaton Park, where his father was a market gardener. In 1901 their address was 2 Eaton Park, Norwich. By 1911 they were living at 11 Surrey Street, Norwich, and Reginald was a telegraph messenger for the General Post Office. Later his parents lived at 26 Rowington Road, Norwich.
Ernest Dann
A Private with the 2nd Battalion, Ernest died on 16th of December 1914 at the age of 40.
Ernest was born at Aldeby, Norfolk, in 1874, a son of George and Eliza Dann. In 1881 his family lived at Waterheath Cottage, Aldeby, near Loddon. By 1891 his mother had died, his father remarried, and the family had moved to Lowestoft, living at Stanley Cottages, 2 Carlton Road, and Ernest was a house painter.
Herbert Edward Drake
A Private with the 2nd Battalion, Herbert died on 26th of September 1917 at the age of 20.
Herbert was born at Forncett Saint Mary, Norfolk, in 1897, a son of Frederick and Sarah Ann Drake. In 1901 his family lived at Norwich Road, Forncett St. Mary. By 1911 they were living at Victoria Road, Oulton Broad, and Herbert was a jobbing gardener.
In 1916 Herbert married Elsie Sabina Bryant: this was registered in the Mutford district. In 1918 Elsie lived at 4 Waveney Cottages, Beccles Road, Oulton Broad.
Clarence Reginald Dearden Drummond
A Lance Corporal with 2nd Bn., Clarence died on 2nd of March 1916 at the age of 21.
Sydney Charles Gillings
A Private with the 2nd Battalion, Sydney died on 22nd of January 1916 at the age of 33.
Sydney was born at Blundeston in 1883, a son of Charles Elijah and Ellen Gillings. He was baptised at Saint Mary’s Church, Blundeston, on 4 February 1883. In 1891 his family lived at High Street, Blundeston. By 1901 their address was The Street, Blundeston, and Sydney was a bricklayer’s labourer. Later his parents lived near The Plough, Blundeston.
George Sead Gowing
A Private with 2nd Bn., George died on 15th of August 1915 at the age of 33.
George was born at Lowestoft on 20 June 1882, a son of George Sead and Caroline Gowing. He was baptised at Christchurch, Lowestoft, on 23 July 1882. In 1891 his family lived at Anguish Street, Lowestoft. By 1901 George’s father had died and his family lived at Lifeboat Cottages, East Street, Lowestoft, and George was a fisherman.
Richard Grimmer
A Private with the 2nd Battalion, Richard died on 30th of April 1917 at the age of 30.
Richard was born at Lowestoft in 1886, a son of George and Phoebe Grimmer. By 1891 his father had died and his family lived at Bank Court, 5 Mariner’s Street, Lowestoft. In 1901 they lived at 4 Bank Court and Richard was a messenger boy. In 1914 Richard’s mother married John Revell and lived at 2 Richmond Place, Richmond Road, Lowestoft.
In 1909 Richard married Sarah Elizabeth Howe. In 1911 they lived at 5 Fir Lane and Richard worked as a fish curer.
William Henry Hadingham
A Private with the 2nd Battalion, William died on 20th of July 1916 at the age of 20.
William was born at Oulton Broad in 1895, a son of William and Alice Maud Mary Hadingham. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 11 October 1895 and his family lived at Carlton Colville. In 1901 his family were living at 68 Victoria Road, Carlton Colville. By 1911 his father had died and his family lived at 4 Etheline Cottages, Victoria Road, Oulton Broad, and William was a shipbuilder’s labourer.
Walter Charles Hall
A Private with the 2nd Battalion, Walter died on 23rd of September 1918 aged 33.
Walter was born at Lowestoft on 19 February 1885, a son of James and Ellen Hall. He was baptised at Christ Church on 1 April 1885 and his family lived at 24 Anguish Street. By 1891 they were living at 22 Spurgeon Street and in 1911 they lived at 2 Spurgeon Street, and Walter was a fisherman.
