Henry Goldsmith Balls
A Lance Corporal with the 11th Battalion, Henry died on 9th of April 1917 aged 19.
Henry was born at Lowestoft on 27 July 1897, a son of Henry Goldsmith Balls and Elizabeth Balls. In 1901 his family lived at 21 Alma Road, Lowestoft, and this was still their address in 1911 when Henry worked as a hairdresser's assistant, possibly working with his brother Robert.
Henry attended Hervey Street School until 1 February 1905 when he became a pupil at Saint John's School, Lowestoft.
William Arthur Boardley
A Sergeant with the 11th Battalion, William died on 11th of November 1918, aged 26.
William was born at Lowestoft in 1892, a son of William James and Lilly Annie Boardley. In 1901 he was living with his maternal grandparents, William and Sarah Beecroft, at 13 Commercial Road, and in 1911 he was also living with his grandparents who had, by then, moved to 19 The Hemplands. William worked as a carter-contractor. Later his mother lived at 51 Old Street, then 104 Beccles Road, and subsequently at 83 Roman Road.
Albert Russell Mills Bradbury
A Private with the 11th Battalion. Albert died on 28th of April 1917 at the age of 27.
Albert was born at Lowestoft on 7 May 1889, a son of George and Ann Elizabeth Bradbury: his father was a fish merchant. Albert was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 7 June 1889.
Charles Alfred Brittain
A Private with the 11th Battalion, Charles died on 22nd of March 1918 at the age of 23.
Charles was born at Lowestoft on 9 November 1894, a son of Charles Alfred and Clara Elizabeth Brittain. He was baptised at Christchurch, Lowestoft, on 5 December 1894, and his family lived at 29 Queens Road, Lowestoft. In 1901 they lived at 10 Princes Road, Lowestoft. By 1911 they were living at 2 Alexandra Road, Lowestoft, and Charles was an iron monger’s assistant. Later his parents lived at Tresco, Corton Road, Lowestoft, and, at some point, Penderalis, Yarmouth Road, Lowestoft.
Joseph Ernest Calver
A Private with the 11th Battalion, Joseph died on 26th of August 1917 at the age of 29.
Joseph was born at Kirkley on 19 August 1888, a son of Charles and Mary Calver. In 1891 his family lived at 8 Haward Street, and this was still their home in 1901. Joseph was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Kirkley, on 23 April 1903, and the family lived at Kimberley Road. By 1909 his family were living at 26 East Street and later his parents lived at 61 Crown Street.
Stanley Arthur Catchpole
A Sergeant with the 11th Battalion, Stanley died on 29th of April 1918 at the age of 21.
Stanley was born at Kessingland in 1897, a son of Edward and Ellen M. Catchpole. He was baptised at Saint Edmund’s Church, Kessingland, on 16 May 1897, and his family lived at High Street, Kessingland. In 1901 his family lived at Church Road, Kessingland, and by 1911 their address was Grass Holme, Church Road
Henry William Clarke
A Private with 11th Battalion, Henry died on 28th of April 1917 at the age of 35.
Son of Elizabeth Ruth (Lily) Trudgill (formerly Clarke) and the late Henry William Clarke.
Henry's father died when Henry was quite young and his mother married Edwin Trudgill in 1887. In 1891 the family lived at 80 Mills Road (off Saint Peter's Street), Lowestoft, and by 1901 they lived at Ivy House, Beccles Road. The 1901 Census shows Henry living at 2 Compass Street and working as a house painter apprentice.
Clement Wilfred Clarke
A Private with the 11th Battalion, Clement died on 9th of April 1918 at the age of 22.
Clement Wilfred, who was later better known as Wilfred, was born at Pakefield on 1 November 1896, a son of Frederick and Alice Fanny Clarke. He was baptised at All Saints' Church, Pakefield, on 13 December 1896. In 1901 his family lived at Carlton Road, Pakefield, close to All Saints' Church, and in 1911 their address was still at Carleton Road. After the war his parents lived at Hammond's Cottages, Pakefield.
Sidney William Cole
A Private with the 11th Battalion, Sidney died on 26th of August 1917 at the age of 23.
Sidney was born at Ashby, near Somerleyton, in 1894, a son of John and Alice Cole. He was baptised at Saint Mary’s Church, Ashby, on 26 August 1894. In 1901 his family lived ‘near Hill Farm’, Ashby. By 1911 his father had died, and his mother had married Charles Howes, and the family lived at The Retreat, Somerleyton, and Sidney worked as a carpenter. Later his mother lived at 4 West Road, Westcliffe-on-Sea.
Charles Cook
A Lance Corporal with the 11th Battalion, Charles died on 1st of October 1918 at the age of 23.
Charles was born at Lowestoft in 1895, a son of James and Jane Anne Cook. He was baptised at Saint John’s Church on 3 January 1896 and his family lived at 98 Clemence Street. In 1901 his family lived at 43 Clemence Street. Charles attended Hervey Street School and, from 2 February 1903, was a pupil at Saint John’s School. In 1911 his family lived at 28 Stevens Street and Charles was a milk can ‘hand’ with a dairy.
William Ernest Cooper
A Sergeant with the 11th Battalion, William died on 9th of April 1918 at the age of 32.
William was born at Lowestoft on 22 October 1885, a son of William and Phyllis Emma Cooper. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 27 December 1885. By 1891 his family were living at 36 Edgeware Street, West Derby, Liverpool, and in 1901 they lived at 59 Edgeware Street, and William was an office boy. By 1911 the family had moved back to Lowestoft, living at 20 Kirkley Street, and William was a clerk. Later his mother lived at 6 Kirkley Street.
Clement Crisp
A Private with the 11th Battalion, Clement died on 3rd of April 1917 at the age of 32.
Clement was born at Griston, near Watton, in 1884, a son of Henry and Martha Crisp. He was baptised at Griston on 9 November 1884.
In 1901 his family were living at White House Cottages, Carlton Colville, and Clement was a carter on a farm. By 1911 they were living at Beccles Road, Oulton Broad, Lowestoft, and Clement worked as a drift net fisherman.
William Daines
A Private with the 11th Battalion, William died on 28th of April 1917 at the age of 24.
William was born at Carlton Colville in 1893, a son of Robert and Ellen Daines. In 1901 his family lived at Newton’s Cottages, Carlton Colville. By 1911 they were living at Private Road, Victoria Road, Oulton Broad, and William was a butcher’s assistant.
William enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft. He joined the Suffolk Regiment, service number 24160 and was posted to the 11th Battalion in France. He served with C Company.
George Fredrick Gage
A Private with the 11th Battalion, George died on 24th of October 1918 aged 21.
George was born at Lowestoft on 8 February 1897, a son of William H. and Fanny Gage. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 3 March 1897 and his family lived at 13 Crown Street. In 1901 his family lived at 4 Orchard Terrace, Union Place, Kirkley. George became a pupil at Kirkley School on 3 June 1901 and by that time his family had moved to London Road. By 1911 they were living at 57 Park Road. George became a student at Lowestoft School of Science on 23 April 1912.
Stanley Gibbs
A Sergeant with the 11th Battalion, Stanley died on 28th of April 1917 at the age of 22.
Stanley was born at Great Yarmouth in 1894, a son of Frederick and Kate Gibbs. In 1901 his family lived at 65 Winifred Road, Great Yarmouth. In 1911 his family lived at 31 Tennyson Road, Lowestoft, and Stanley worked as a draper’s porter. Later his parents lived at 29 Alexandra Road.
Thomas Phillip Heath
A Private with the 11th Battalion, Thomas died on 9th of April 1918 at the age of 26.
Thomas was born at Hertford, Hertfordshire, on 11 April 1892, a son of Thomas Philip and Louisa Annie Heath. He was baptised at Saint Andrew’s Church, Hertford, on 5 June 1892. By 1901 his family lived at 121 High Street, Lowestoft, and this was still their home in 1911 when Thomas worked as a wine merchant’s clerk. Later his parents lived at 64 Liverpool Road, Chester, and subsequently at 7 Wortley Terrace, Mundesley, Norfolk.
Bertie Richard Hubbard
A Private with the 11th Battalion, Bertie died on 15th of April 1918 at the age of 24.
Bertie was born at Lowestoft on 25 October 1894, a son of Frederick William and Eliza (Edith) Hubbard. On 31 May 1899 he became a pupil at Kirkley School, and his family lived at Clement Square. In 1901 his family lived at 3 Ontario Road and in 1911 they lived at 7 Church Street, Pakefield, and Bertie worked as an errand boy for a beer retailer. Later his parents lived at 21 Southwell Road.
Edward Frederick Jordan
A Lance Corporal with the 11th Battalion, Edward died on 1st of May 1918 aged 29.
Edward was born at Lowestoft on 3 December 1888, a son of Frederick and Annie Maria Jordan. In 1901 his family lived at 41 The Hemplands. Edward was a pupil at Cunningham School and then, from 25 February 1895, attended Saint Margaret’s School. In 1911 his family lived at 92 Queens Road and Edward was an electrician-wireman. Later his parents lived at 96 Beresford Road.
Samuel John Musk
A Private with the 11th Battalion, Samuel died on 9th of April 1918 at the age of 20.
Samuel was born at Lowestoft in 1898, a son of Thomas John and Elizabeth Sarah Musk. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 20 April 1898, and his family lived at 237 Raglan Street and this was still their home in 1901. By 1911 they were living at 31 Haward Street, and later his parents lived at 16 Marine Parade.
Arthur Peak
A Private with the 11th Battalion, Arthur died on 9th of April 1918 at the age of 38.
Arthur was born at Lowestoft in 1881, a son of Edward George and Mary Peak. In 1881 he lived with his parents, and paternal grandparents, at 12-13 Raglan Street. By 1891 his family were living at 24-26 Raglan Street. By 1901 Arthur's mother had died and his family lived at Gladstone Villas, rear of Bevan Street, and Arthur worked as a carter.
James Robert Reeder
A Private with the 11th Battalion, James died on 27th of October 1918 aged 22.
James was born at Lound in 1896, a son of Henry William and Alice Maria Reeder. He was baptised at Saint John the Baptist Church, Lound, on 7 February 1897, and his family lived at Lound. In 1901 his family lived at 23 The Street, Lound. In 1911 their address was The Street, Lound, and James worked as a farm boy.
George Robert Reynolds
A Private with the 11th Battalion, George died on 13th of September 1917 at the age of 29.
George was born at Aldeby, Norfolk, on 10 September 1887, a son of Frederick and Harriet Reynolds. He was baptised at Aldeby on 9 October 1887. In 1891 his family lived at The Street, Aldeby. By 1901 they were living at 85 Saint Margaret’s Road, Lowestoft, and this was still the family home in 1911.
Henry Alfred Tuttle
A Private with the 11th Battalion, Henry died on 9th of April 1918 at the age of 24.
Thomas Cecil Hardwick Woods
A Lieutenant, attached to the 11th Battalion, Thomas died on 22nd of March 1918 at the age of 21.
Thomas was born at Blundeston in 1897, the only son of Captain Thomas Hardwick Woods and Mrs. Florence Emily Rose Woods. Thomas was baptised at Saint Mary’s Church, Blundeston, on 14 May 1897, and his family lived at Blundeston Hall and this remained one of their homes throughout Thomas’ life.
In 1911 Thomas was a pupil at Claremont House School, Kirkley Cliff. Later he had a home at Winchester House, Newport.

Clifford Bird
A Private with the 12th Battalion Clifford died on 12th of April 1918 at the age of 25.
Clifford was born at South Walsham, Norfolk, in 1892, a son of Benjamin and Annie Bird. By 1901 his father had died and his mother remarried and his family lived at City, Barsham, Suffolk. In 1911 they were living at 2 Albert Cottages, Holly Road, Oulton Broad, and Clifford worked as a shipping clerk for a fish exporter.
George Charles Cowles
A Private with the 12th Battalion, George died on 6th of May 1917 at the age of 35.
George was born at Oulton on 2 June 1881, a son of Charles and Alice Cowles. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 26 June 1881. By 1891 George’s father had died and his mother had married John Alexander and the family lived at 76 Queen’s Road.
Edward Henry Barnabas Dunnett
A Corporal with the 12th Battalion, Edward died on 18th of July 1917 at the age of 40.
Edward was born at Lowestoft on 25 April 1877, a son of James and Sarah Dunnett. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 3 June 1877. In 1881 his family lived at Wicks Court, Saint Peter’s Street. Edward attended Arnold Street School and, on 22 February 1886, became a pupil at Saint Margaret’s School. At this time his family lived at Chapel Street and by 1891 they were living at 12 Oxford Road.
Gordon William Jenner
A Private with the 12th Battalion, Gordon died on 12th of April 1918 at the age of 22.
Gordon was born at Lowestoft in 1896, a son of George Frederick and Violet Maria Jenner. Throughout his life Gordon’s family lived at 39 Reeve Street. In 1911 Gordon was an upholsterer’s apprentice.
Gordon enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft. He joined the Suffolk Regiment, service number 21427, and was posted to France to serve with the 12th Battalion.
Charles William Loynes
A Private with the 12th Battalion, Charles died on 23rd of November 1917 at the age of 27.
Charles was born at Lowestoft in 1890, a son of Charles Henry and Elizabeth Loynes. He was baptised at Saint John’s Church on 11 April 1890 and his family lived at 2 Hervey Street. By 1901 they were living at 33 Trafalgar Street, and in 1911 at 5 Trafalgar Street, and Walter was a railway clerk. Later his parents lived at 104 Beresford Road.

Harry Henry Harden
A Private with 15th (Suffolk Yeomanry) Bn. Harry died on 2nd of September 1918 at the age of 28.
Robert Hawkes
A Private with 15th (Suffolk Yeomanry) Bn., Robert died on 31st of October 1917 at the age of 35.
Robert was born at Carlton Colville in 1884, a son of Henry and Mary Ann Hawkes. He was baptised at Saint Peter's Church, Carlton Colville, on 22 February 1885. A marginal note in the baptism register at Saint Peter's reads: 'Died for England in the Great War.'
John Hellen
A Private with the 15th (Suffolk Yeomanry) Battalion, John died on 5th of September 1918 aged 20.
John was born at Kirkley on 12 March 1898, a son of Edith Hellen. John is not shown in the 1901 but on 18 March 1901 he joined Kirkley School, and his family lived at 90 Carlton Road. By 1906 he was living with his grandparents at Savoy Cottage, Saint John’s Road, and he attended Saint John’s School from 19 March 1906 to 1911. By 1911 John’s mother was living at 1 Market Place, Kessingland, and she sometimes used the surname Bird.
Denny James Crickmore Lythaby
A Private with the 15th (Suffolk Yeomanry) Battalion, Denny died on 16th of September 1918 aged 33.
Denny's actual 'birth' name was Daniel. However, when he enlisted the Army recorded his first name as Dennis and Commonwealth War Graves recorded him as Denny. He was born at Lowestoft in 1886, a son of Thomas and Hannah Rebecca Lythaby. Between 1891 and 1918 his family lived at 5 Scarle's Buildings, Whapload Road, Lowestoft. Later his mother lived at 70 Whapload Road, Beach, Lowestoft. In 1901 Denny worked as a bricklayer's labourer.
John Edward Mallett
A Private with the 15th (Suffolk Yeomanry) Battalion, John died on 5th of September 1918 aged 20.
John was born at Lowestoft on 22 June 1898, a son of John and Elizabeth Alice Mallett. Between 1901 and 1911 his family lived at 60 Cambridge Road. John attended Church Road School until 1 February 1905 when he joined Saint Margaret’s School. Later his parents lived at 64 Sussex Road.
Bernard John Mann
A Corporal with 15th (Suffolk Yeomanry) Battalion, Bernard died on 5th of September 1918 aged 20.
Bernard was born at Lowestoft on 27 January 1897, a son of Joseph and Eliza Jane Mann. In 1901 his family lived at 2 Raglan Street and in 1911 at 51 Roman Road. Later his parents lived at 103 Clapham Road. Bernard was educated at Lowestoft and subsequently worked in the office of his uncle, Jabez Mann, engineers, at Sevenoaks, Kent.
Alfred Henry Norman
A Private with the 15th (Suffolk Yeomanry) Battalion, Alfred died on 18th of September 1918 aged 20.
Ernest Henry Ruffles
A Lance Corporal with 15th (Suffolk Yeomanry) Battalion, Ernest died on 7th of October 1918 aged 19.
Ernest was born at Lowestoft in 1898, a son of Ernest and Harriet Ruffles. In 1901 his family lived at 30 Lovewell Road and by 1911 they were living at 70 Lovewell Road.
Ernest enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft. He joined the Suffolk Regiment, service number 2300, and was posted to the 1st Battalion in France. Later he was posted to the 15th Battalion, with service number 320306.
Victor Albert Sterry
A Sergeant with 15th Battalion, Victor died on 6th of November 1917 at the age of 30.
Victor was born at Lowestoft on 10 August 1887, a son of Frederick John Cook Sterry and Mary Ann Sterry. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church on 4 September 1887. In 1891 his family lived at 24 Reeve Street, Lowestoft, and this was still their home in 1901 when Victor worked as an errand boy.
In 1912 Victor married Lily Evelyn Cook. After Victor's death Lily married Harry Palmer and lived at 63 Worthing Road, Lowestoft.

Albert Archer
A Private with 1st Bn., Albert died on 8th of May 1915 at the age of 35.
Albert was born at Lowestoft on 17 March 1880, a son of Robert and Harriet Archer. In 1881 his family lived at 3 Factory Court, Factory Lane, Lowestoft. Albert attended Arnold Street School and, from 24 August 1886 attended Saint Margaret's School. In 1891 his family lived at 18 Albert Street. Albert left school on 22 September 1893 to work as a shop boy. By 1911 his family were living at 18 Park Road, Lowestoft, and Albert worked as a labourer.
Karl Ferdinand Franck William Arnold
A Captain with 1st Bn., Karl died on 23rd of April 1915 at the age of 27.
Karl was born at Penarth, Cardiff on 19 March 1888, a son of Franck Thomas and Edith Maud Arnold. His grandfather was Reverend Charles Thomas Arnold, of Rugby, and his grandmother, Susanna Magdalena Arnold, lived at 4 High Street, Lowestoft. See house on LowestoftOldAndNow.org
