Anson Battalion Royal Naval Division

Kenneth John Cooper

An Able Seaman with Anson Battalion, Kenneth died on 25th of March 1918 at the age of 20.

Kenneth was born at Lound on 29 January 1898, a son of John and Rose Cooper of The Street, Lound. He was baptised at Saint John the Baptist Church, Lound, on 1 May 1898. In 1911 Kenneth was an errand boy (domestic). 

Kenneth attested for the Army Reserve on 11 December 1915 but was called up to serve with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve on 16 June 1917 and actually joined the Royal Naval Division which was designated to fight on land but was made up of naval personnel. 

Cecil Horace Mallett

Cecil Horace Mallett

A Sub-Lieutenant with Anson Battalion, Cecil died on 12th of April 1918 at the age of 21. 

Cecil was born at Lowestoft on 3 January 1897, a son of Frank Cecil and Edith Emily Mary Mallett. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 12 February 1897 and his family lived at 61 Norwich Road. This was still their home in 1901. By 1909 they were living at 14 Beresford Road, and this was still their home in 1911. Later his parents lived at Ardgowan, Yarmouth Road.

Cecil attended Church Road School and, on 15 September 1909, became a pupil at Lowestoft School of Science. 

Drake Battalion Royal Naval Division

John Weatherstone Cookes

A Sub Lieutenant with Drake Battalion, Royal Naval Division, John died on 30th of December 1917 at the age of 22. 

John was born at Balham, Surrey, on 17 February 1895, a son of Walter Ulric and Mary Gertrude Cookes. He was baptised at Saint Mary’s Church, Balham, on 28 April 1895, and his family lived at 10 Dornton Road, Balham. In 1901 his family lived at York Villas, Commodore Road, Oulton Broad. By 1911 they were living at Avonholme, Romany Road, Oulton Broad.

Walter George Piper

An Able Seaman with Drake Battalion, Walter died on 21st of March 1918 at the age of 19. 

Walter was born at Lowestoft on 29 November 1899, a son of Walter and Emily Piper. In 1901 his family lived at Bishop’s Buildings, Mariners Street. By 1911 they were living at 1 Infirmary Court, Saint Margaret’s Plain.

Walter joined the Great Eastern Railway at Lowestoft on 19 July 1915. He was a cleaner, and later acting fireman.  

H.M.S. Mantis.

Julius Lloyd Jackson

A Sub-Lieutenant with H.M.S. Mantis, Julius died on 31st of July 1943 aged 21. 

Julius was born at Herringfleet on 6 February 1922, a son of Brigadier-General Sir Thomas Dare Jackson D.S.O. M.V.O. 2nd Bt. and of Lady Jackson (nee Massy Lloyd). His family’s home, throughout Julius’ life, was at Herringfleet Hall, Blocka Road, Herringfleet. 

Julius was a pupil at Eton College. He was commissioned as an Acting Sub-Lieutenant with the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve on 6 February 1942, and Temporary Sub-Lieutenant on 1 December 1942. 

H.M.S. Martello

William Frederick Cockrell

A Lieutenant with H.M.S. Martello, William died on 28 January 1942, aged 48. 

William was born at Wivenhoe, Essex, on 10 September 1893, a son of William Frederick and Margaret Christina Cockrell. He was baptised at Saint Mary’s Church, Wivenhoe, on 26 October 1893. By 1901 his family had moved to Lowestoft and lived at 4 Waveney Drive, and this was still their address in 1911 when William worked as an engineer. By 1916 their home was at Chesterfield House, Lowestoft, and later his parents lived at Arlington, North Parade.

Hawke Battalion Royal Naval Division

Charles Ashford

An Able Seaman with Hawke Battalion, Charles died on 21st of March 1918 at the age of 38. 

Harold Edwin Bird

An Able Seaman with Hawke Battalion, Harold died on 9 October 1917, at the age of 27.

Harold was born at Clapham on 29 June 1889, a son of Edwin Charles and Emily Bird. In 1901 his family lived at 32 Crater (sic) Road, Brixton, London, and by 1911 they were living at 40 Montrose Avenue, West Kilburn. 

Before moving to Lowestoft Harold has resided at 11 Piccadilly, Manchester. 

Hood Battalion Royal Naval Division

Jack Arthur Boyce

An Able Seaman with Hood Battalion, Jack died on 8th of October 1918 aged 19.

Jack was born at Blundeston on 4 December 1898, a son of John and Emma Boyce. He was baptised at Saint Mary’s Church, Blundeston, on 5 February 1899. In 1901 his family lived at Lound Road, Blundeston, and by 1911 at The Hole, Ashby. In 1916 the family’s address was the Dell, Ashby, and Jack was a farm labourer.

Motor Gun Boat 444

Edward Derek Walter Leaf

A Lieutenant with Motor Gun Boat 444, Edward died on 15th of February 1944 aged 25. 

Edward was born on 29 June 1918 at Heatherside House, Camberley, Surrey, a son of Lieutenant Charles Symonds Leaf, Royal Marines, and the Hon. Mrs. Catherine Blanche Leaf. By 1943 Edward’s parents lived at The Manor House, Freckenham, Bury St. Edmunds. 

Edward was a pupil at Marlborough and Trinity College, Cambridge. In 1937 he took part in an expedition to Ellesmere Land and Baffin Island, and in 1939. Edward was a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.  

R.N. Depot (Crystal Palace)

William James Wittler Youngman

An Ordinary Seaman with R.N. Depot (Crystal Palace), William died on 8th of October 1918 at the age of 18. 

William was born at Kirkley on 4 September 1900, a son of William James and Lily Mary Youngman. In 1901 his family lived at 44 Ipswich Road, Lowestoft, and by 1911 they were living at 18 John Street, Lowestoft. Later his father lived at 5 Grosvenor Road, Lowestoft, and his mother at 18 John Street.

William was a munitions worker when he joined the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve on 2 March 1918.
