Bertram George Bardwell

A Gunner with 118 Field Regt., Bertram died on 10th of December 1942 at the age of 21. 

Bertram was born at Great Yarmouth in 1921, a son of Bertram and Ruth Bardwell. His family lived at 20 Regent Road, Great Yarmouth. In 1939 they lived at 104 Regent Road, Great Yarmouth, and later his parents lived at Lowestoft Suffolk.

120 Bty. 30 Lt. A.A. Regt.

Percy Reginald Balls

A Gunner with 120 Battery, 30 Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Percy died on 25th of October 1942 aged 31. 

Percy was born at Lowestoft on 18 June 1911, a son of Arthur George and Ellen Elizabeth Balls. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 11 July 1911, and his family lived at 49 Cambridge Road.

Henry Ernest Brady

Henry was born at Lowestoft on 11 February 1905, a son of Samuel George and Lucy Ann Brady. In 1911 his family lived at 1 Bishop’s Buildings, Mariners Street, and later at 21 Chapel Street. In 1921 his family lived at 94 Seago Street. 

On 5 September 1931 Henry married Florence Kathleen Saunder at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft. Henry was a barman living at 94 Seago Street and Florence lived at 43 Norwich Road. In 1939 they lived at 94 Seago Street and Herny was a casual Post Office worker. Later Florence lived at 5 Payne Street. 

Ronald William Smith

A Gunner with 144 Battery, 35 Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Ronald died on 10th of June 1943 aged 21. 

Ronald was born at Carlton Colville on 14 September 1921, a son of James William and Priscilla May Smith. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Carlton Colville, on 16 October 1921 and his family lived at Kirkley Run. By 1939 their home was at 78 Kirkley Run and Ronald was a factory hand. 

147 (The Essex Yeomanry) Field Regt.

Donald Gordon Coleman

A Gunner with 147 (The Essex Yeomanry) Field Regiment, Donald died on 27th of October 1940 aged 20. 

Gordon was born at Lowestoft on 9 March 1920, a son of Gordon Knight Coleman and Lily Catherine Coleman. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 1 April 1920 and his family lived at 75 May Road. By 1939 his family were living at 237 Saint Peters Street and Donald was a junior insurance clerk. Later his parents lived at Carlton Colville. 

148 (The Bedfordshire Yeo.) Field Regt.

Jonathan William Allen

A Bombardier with 148 (The Bedfordshire Yeomanry) Field Regiment. Jonathan died on 13th of November 1943 aged 35. 

Jonathan was born at Luton, Bedfordshire, on 21 August 1908, a son of Jonathan William and Emma Allen. In 1911 his family lived at 16 Cumberland Road, Houghton Regis and in 1921 his family lived at 109 High Street, Houghton Regis, Bedfordshire, and later at 29 Drury Lane, Houghton Regis. 

Jonathan enlisted in the Royal Artillery in 1935. He served with the 148th (Bedfordshire Yeomanry) Field Regiment. 

George Arthur Harvey

A Sergeant with 420 Battery, 148 (The Bedfordshire Yeo.) Field Regt., George died on 2nd-3rd of March 1942 at the age of 39. 

George was born at Lowestoft on 24 January 1904, a son of Walter Robert and Hannah Martha Harvey. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 13 May 1904, and his family lived at 16 Sandringham Road. 

George was working as a carter when he attested for the Royal Artillery, at Bury St. Edmunds, on 17 September 1923. he enlisted to serve six years with the Colours and six with the Reserve. He joined the Army Reserve on 10 March 1930. 

Patrick Clare Smith

A Sergeant with 148 (The Bedfordshire Yeomanry) Field Regiment, Patrick died on 24th of July 1943 aged 37. 

Patrick was born at Druncliff (sic), County Clare, Ireland, on 2 January 1906, a son of Jonathan and Sarah Ann Smith. Patrick’s father had served with the Royal Artillery for 27 years and volunteered to rejoin the artillery in 1914 and served throughout the First World War. In 1911 his family lived at 4 Ashby Road, Lowestoft, and this was still their address in 1919.  

152 Bty 51 H.A.A. Rgt.

Gilbert Wase

A Gunner with 152 Battery, 51 Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Gilbert died on 27th April 1941 aged 24.

Gilbert was born at Liverpool on 13 March 1917, a son of George and Alice Marion Wase. In 1921 his family lived at 43 West Street, Southport. 

In 1939 Gilbert lived at The Bothy, Henham, and worked as a market gardener and subsequently he lived at Que Vive Cottage, Beach Road, Kessingland. 

239 Bty. 77 H.A.A. Regt.

James Leonard Langley

A Gunner with 239 Battery, 77 Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment, James died on 26th of July 1943 aged 22. 

James was born at Lowestoft on 15 February 1921, a son of Albert Henry and Lucy Emma Langley. In 1921 his family lived at 10 Fir Lane.

In 1941 James married Audrey Elsie Irene Soanes, this was registered in Lothingland district. Their home was at 97 Seago Street. 

277 Battery, 68 (Midlands) A.A. Regt.

Ernest William Hembling

A Gunner with 277 Battery, 68 (Midlands) Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Ernest died on 3rd of January 1943 aged 36. 

Ernest was born at Lowestoft on 24 November 1906, a son of Christopher George and Mary Ann Hembling. In 1911 his family lived at 19 Mariners Street. By 1921 his family were living at 54 Mariners Street. 

Ernest was a general labourer when he enlisted in the Royal Marines, service number Ch 24774, at London, on 29 September 1925.  

317 Bty. 36 Searchlight Regt.

Arthur Charles Thacker

A Gunner with 317 Battery, 36 Searchlight Regiment, Arthur died on 18th of February 1941 aged 20. 

Arthur was born at Pakefield on 11 November 1920, a son of Arthur Henry and Elizabeth Alice Thacker. He was baptised at All Saints’ Church, Pakefield, on 12 December 1920. By 1939 his family were living at 92 Long Road. 

387 Bty. 121 H.A.A. Regt.

Harold Edgar Capper

A Gunner with 387 Battery, 121 H.A.A. Regiment, Harold died on 13th of August 1946 at the age of 37. 

Harold was born at Canterbury on 16 February 1909, a son of William Richard and Ellen Alice Capper. In 1911 his family lived at 4 Military Road, Canterbury.

Harold married Violet Adelaide Hatcher at Saint Mary the Virgin Church, Orlestone, Kent, on 6 September 1930. In 1939 Harold and Violet lived at 2 Coronation Cottages, Worth, Kent, and Harold worked as a nurseryman (foreman).

435 Bty. 131 Lt. A.A. Regt.

Edward Frederick George Scarles

A Gunner with 435 Battery, 131 Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Edward died on 20th of August 1943 aged 28. 

Edward was born at Stowmarket on 13 May 1915 a son of Fredrick and Florence Scarles. In 1921 his family lived at 45 Upper Cliff Road, Gorleston. Later his parents lived 75 Beresford Road, Lowestoft, before moving to Salisbury, Wiltshire.  

51 Medium Regt.

George Tatler

A Gunner with 51 (Midland) Medium Regiment, George died on 23rd of June 1944 aged 32. 

George was born at Tunstall, Staffordshire, on 20 December 1911, a son of Joseph and Elizabeth Ann Tatler. In 1921 his family lived at 12 Watergate Street, Tunstall.

In 1934 George married Ida Dorothy Jones, this was registered in the Mutford district. By 1939 they were living at 69 Waveney Crescent and George was a salesman. 

51st/69th Infantry Regiment

John Herbert Townsend

A Sergeant with the 51st/69th Infantry Regiment, John died on 18th of April 1944 aged 30. 

John, also known as Jack, was born in the Basingstoke district in 1913, a son of Herbert and Nellie Elizabeth Townsend. In 1921 the family lived at Huddersfield and, some time later, moved to Lowestoft. John's mother died and his father then married Elsie Brown and they lived at 18 Oulton Road, Lowestoft. 

John married Violet Lilian Cutting, of Needham Market, in 1940. Violet was a mental health nurse and worked in Ipswich in 1939. Violet remarried in 1946.

53rd Anti-Aircraft Driver Training Regiment

Frank Amos James Whaley

A Gunner with 53 Anti-Aircraft Driver Training Regiment, Frank died on 7th of February 1941 aged 39.

Victor Robert Hook

Victor Robert Hook

A Gunner with 57 Field Regiment, Victor died on 19th of July 1944 aged 23. 

Victor was born at Lowestoft on 4 December 1920, a son of Robert William John and Janet Hook. He was baptised at Saint Edmund’s Church, Kessingland, on 15 May 1921 and his family lived at 4 Nelson Road, Lowestoft. In 1939 Victor and his family were living at 14 Fairfield Road, Clacton, Essex, and Victor was a general labourer. 

Victor married Eileen Maud Robinson in 1940, this was registered in the Lothingland district. Their home was at 59 Oxford Road, Lowestoft. 

58 Medium Regt.

Peter William Robbens

A Gunner with 58 Medium Regiment, Peter died on 29th of May 1940 at the age of 19. 

Peter was born at Lowestoft in 1920, a son of Bertie James William Robbens and of Ethel May Robbens. In 1921 his family lived at 6 Kirkley Park Road, Lowestoft. Later his parents lived at Kempton Lodge, Beccles Road, Carlton Colville, Lowestoft.

661 A.O.P. Sqdn.

Hubert Stanley Small

Formerly a Royal Artillery Bombardier, attached to 661 Air Observation Post Squadron, Hubert died on 30th of December 1946 at the age of 26. Son of George Cornelius and Isobella Small of Lowestoft; Husband of Phyllis Small of 145 Kimberley Road Lowestoft.

Hubert enlisted in the Royal Artillery in 1938. The Royal Artillery attestation registers show that he was discharged, medically unfit for further service, on 14 June 1944. 

67 HAA Regiment

Frederick Charles Cooke

A Gunner with 67 Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Frederick died on 6 September 1944 at the age of 23. 

Frederick was born at Lowestoft on 19 June 1921, a son of Henry James and Emma Jane Cooke. In 1921 his family lived at 185 Clapham Road, and this was still their home in 1939 when Frederick worked and a wood machinist’s assistant, possibly at the same saw mill as his father.

68 Medium Regiment

Clifford Charles Bailey

A Gunner with 68 Medium Regiment, Clifford died on 14th of November 1942 aged 22.

Born at Barsham, near Beccles, in 1920, a son of Edgar Charles and Maria Bailey. In 1921 his family lived at Marsh Cottage, Barsham, and by 1939 their home was at 1 Back House, Rushmere. 

Clifford enlisted in the Royal Artillery in 1939. By 1942 Clifford was serving with 68 Medium Regiment in North Africa. He was reported missing on 20 June 1942 which is when his regiment was captured at Tobruk. 

7 Coastal Regiment

Leon George Harry Patin

A Gunner with 7th Coastal Regiment, Leon died on 5 March 1943, aged 26.

Leon was born at Walthamstow on 8 March 1916, a son of Leonard and Dorothy Patin. In 1921 Leon, and his mother, lived with his maternal grandmother, Emily Sheraton, at 67 Holme Road, East Ham. Leon’s mother married Robert Whinney. 

73 Anti-Tank Regt.

John Joseph Furlong

A Gunner with 73 Anti-Tank Regiment, John died on 22nd of March 1943 aged 26. 

John was born at Saint Denis, Southampton, on 15 September 1916, a son of Patrick and Charlotte Furlong. He was baptised at Saint Edmund's Church, Southampton, on 9 October 1916. 

75 (Shropshire Yeomanry) Medium Regt.

John Trevor Briggs

A Lance Bombardier with 75 (Shropshire Yeomanry) Medium Regiment, John died on 9th of August 1941 at the age of 24. 

John was born in 1917, a son of Samuel George and Fanny Briggs. In 1921 his family lived at The Street, Hulver, and by 1939 they were living near the Post Office at Hulver, Beccles.

John married Beryl Olive Shipley in 1940. She lived at 'Penwood', Rushmere Road, Carlton Colville. Beryl remarried in 1944.

John died, at Bruith, Breconshire, as the result of an accident. 

88 Field Regt.

William Edward Barley

A Gunner with  352 Battery, 88 Field Regiment, William died on 26th of July 1943 at the age of 35. 

William was born at Wandsworth, London, on 8 December 1907, a son of George and Gertrude Ellen Barley. In 1911 his family lived at 6 Beach Stone Place, Pakefield. From 6 May 1912 William attended Cunningham Infant School. 

In the 1920s William served with the Roya West Kent Regiment, service number 6339715. 

In May 1938 William was appointed postman at Oulton Broad.
