A Leading Aircraftman with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, Hugh died on 3rd of July 1943 aged 33.
Hugh was born at Lowestoft on 24 August 1909, a son of Ernest Jabez and Ada Maria Morling. In 1911 his family lived at Snowdon House, 146, London Road North. By 1921 they were living at 23 Old Nelson Street and later his father lived at 45 Gunton Drive.
In 1935 Hugh married Winifred May Gouldby. By 1939 Hugh and Winifred were living at 20 Ipswich Road and Hugh was the director and joint manager of Pearn’s Radio and Music Retailers and Repairers.
Charles Richard Pearce
A Leading Seaman with H.M. Motor Minesweeper 70. Charles died on 24th of September 1943 at the age of 33.
Charles was born at Lowestoft on 11 February 1911, a son of Richard and Alice Pearce. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 3 March 1911 and his family lived at 4 Lincoln's Buildings, Whapload Road. By 1921 his family were living at 21 Dove Street and Charles attended the Central School.
In late 1939 Charles married Marjorie Irene Moxey who lived at 44 Trafalgar Street, Lowestoft.
Arthur Pearson
A Deck Hand with H.M.S. Attentive III, Arthur died on 5th of November 1917 at the age of 33.
Arthur was born at Barsham, Beccles, Suffolk, on 6 July 1884, a son of Harry and Margaret Pearson. In 1891 his family lived at Fox Farm, Willingham, Suffolk, and by 1901 they were living at Flixton Marsh Road, Blundeston, and Arthur was a farm labourer.
In 1914 Arthur married Alice Mildred Burgess. They lived at 165 Saint Margaret’s Road, Lowestoft.
Sydney Albert Press
A Petty Officer with H.M.S. Gloucester, Sydney died on 22nd of May 1941 aged 33.
Sydney was born at Walthamstow on 12 November 1907, a son of Henry and Margaret Press.
Sydney joined the Royal Navy, as a Boy 2nd Class, on 10 May 1923.
Sydney married Elizabeth Lyons at Saint Luke's Church, Hackney, on 25 December 1928. Sydney was serving on H.M.S. Devonshire and Elizabeth lived at 81 Paragon Road, Hackney.
A long serving sailor Sydney was awarded the Royal Navy Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in 1940.
James Read
A Private with 2nd Battalion, James died on 16th of December 1915 at the age of 33.
James was born at All Saints’, South Elmham, Suffolk, in late 1881, a son of William and Mary Ann Read. His birth was registered in the Wangford district of Suffolk.
Note that when James enlisted in the Militia he stated that he was born at Rumburgh, near Halesworth, and later, when he enlisted in the regular army, he stated that he was born at Lowestoft.
James’ mother died in 1884 and, in 1886, his father married Mahala Potter, sister of George Potter.
Harry Riches
A Private with the 2nd Battalion, Harry died on 15th of November 1916 at the age of 33.
Harry was born at Hardley, Norfolk, on 22 October 1883, a son of Harry and Esther Riches. He was baptised at Hardley on 25 November 1883. In 1891 his family lived at The Street, Hardley, and in 1901 they lived at Valley Farm, South Elmham, and Henry was a farm labourer. By 1911 they were living at Primrose Cottage, Carlton Colville, and Henry worked as a coal porter.
William Rushmere
A Private with 1st Bn, William died on 25th of May 1915 at the age of 33. Son of Charles Rushmere.
William was born at Kirkley in 1882, a son of Charles and Caroline Rushmere. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Kirkley, on 15 April 1881. His family lived at 22 Lovewell Terrace, Kirkley. By 1891 they were living at 56 Clement Square, Lowestoft, but the 1891 Census shows William and his father at Hoford Barn, West Tilbury (his father was from Tilbury). By 1901 William’s father had died, his family lived at 6 Marine Cottages, Kirkley, and William was a bricklayer.
Abiah Sabberton

Abiah's actual first name was Obadiah
Abiah was born at Lowestoft in 1882, a son of (Samuel) Richard and Mary Ann Sabberton. In 1891 his family lived at 7 Stevens Street, Lowestoft, and in 1901 were still living at 7 Stevens Street and Abiah worked as a quay labourer.
Between 1899 and 1903 Abiah served in the Suffolk Artillery Militia.
William Johnson Sandwell
A Private with 2/2nd Bn., William died on 15th of September 1917 at the age of 33.
George Robert Savory
A Private with 8th Bn. George died on 14th of April 1917 at the age of 33.
George was born at Lowestoft in 1884, a son of William and Jane Savory. In 1891 his family lived at 123 Wollaston Road and this was still their home in 1901.
On 19 July 1903 George married Mary Ann Grimble at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft. By 1911 they were living at 24 Marine Parade, Lowestoft, with George's parents, and George worked as a bricklayer. Mary died in 1912.
George Benjamin Smith
A Trimmer with H.M.S. Ganges II, George died on 30th of November 1918 aged 33.
George was born at Corton on 4 November 1885, a son of George and Ellen Smith.
Ethel Elizabeth Strowger
A Volunteer with a Voluntary Aid Detachment, Ethel died on 7th of November 1918 at the age of 33.
Ethel was born at Kessingland in 1885, a daughter of George and Elizabeth Cathpole. In 1891 her family lived at Green Lane, Kessingland, and by 1901 they were living at Eddystone House, Church Road, Kessingland. At that time Ethel worked as a net mender.
Ethel married Clifford Edward Strowger, at Kessingland, on 27 December 1906 and they lived at Scarboro House Church Road Kessingland.
Bertram Henry Tarbox
A Private with 1st Bn., Bertram died on 21st of April 1915 at the age of 33.
Bertram was born at Norwich in 1882, a son of James Clifford and Elizabeth H. Tarbox. In 1891 they lived at 1 Fye Bridge, Norwich. By 1901 they had moved to Lowestoft and lived at 8 York Road, and Bertram worked as a stable assistant/groom.
On 17 January 1907 Bertram married Elizabeth Cook at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft. Bertram was a fisherman living at 61 Wollaston Road, and Elizabeth lived at 51 Reeve Street. By 1911 their home was at 63 Edinburgh Road, Lowestoft.
William Thomas
A Private with 54th (1/1st East Anglian) Casualty Clearing Station, William died on 13th August 1915 at the age of 33.
William was born at Saint Ives, Cornwall, in 1882, a son of William and Sarah Jane Thomas. He was baptised at Saint Ives on 18 October 1882. By 1891 his family were living at 26 Beaconsfield Road, Kirkley. By 1901 they had moved to 59 Beaconsfield Road and William became a gasfitter's apprentice.
By 1911 his family had moved to 32 Salisbury Road, Lowestoft, and William worked as a gas fitter.
William James Tillett
A Private with 256 Mechanical Transport Company, William died on 17th of February 1919 at the age of 33.
William was born at Kessingland in 1886, a son of Henry and Edith Tillett. In 1891 his family lived at Wesley House, High Street, Kessingland, and this was still their home in 1911 when William worked as a fisherman.
On 12 July 1915 William married Henrietta Hebbron at Saint Andrews Church, Bishop Auckland. They lived at 14 Waldron Street, Bishop Auckland. Later Henrietta lived at 159 Fulham Palace Road, Hammersmith, London, before moving to 38 Annesley Park, Dublin.
John Thomas Wilson
A Gunner with A Battery, 52nd Brigade, John died on 28th of May 1917 at the age of 33.
John was born at Ely in 1883, a son of John and Emma Wilson. In 1891 his family lived at 2 Middle Ten Bank, Ely. By 1901 they were living at Walpole Lane, Ely, and John was a domestic servant. Later his parents lived at 21 Silver Street, Ely.
Arthur James Wright
A Private with the 2nd Battalion, Arthur died on 29th of September 1917 at the age of 33.
Arthur was born at Upton, Norfolk, in 1883, a son of James and Frances Wright. He was baptised at Acle on 30 July 1883. In 1891 his family lived at Moulton Road, Acle. By 1901 his family were living at Hall Road, Oulton Broad, and Arthur worked as a labourer and an iron works.
Arthur married Maude Ethel Sayer in 1907. By 1911 they were living 'near' The Street, Blundeston, and Arthur was a labourer with the Great Eastern Railway Company.
John Cooper Youngs
An Engineman with H.M.S. Gulf Stream. John died on 16th of July 1942 at the age of 33.
John was born at Gorleston on 22 July 1908, a son of Rowland George and Gertrude Rachael Youngs. In 1911 his family lived at 215 Lowestoft Road, Gorleston.
On 12 June 1933 John married Muriel Evelyn Bennett at Saint John's Church, Lowestoft. John was living at 66 High Street, Southwold, and working as an ironmonger, and Muriel was living at 79 London Road South.
