Edward James Firman
A Second Hand with H.M. Drifter Campania II, Edward died on 5th of March 1917 at the age of 22.
Edward was born at Kirkley on 3 April 1894, a son of James and Flora Firman. In 1901 his family lived at 29 Saint Georges Road. Later his parents lived at 33 Saint Georges Road. In 1911 Edward was an able seaman – cook on the trawler Acacia at Padstow, Cornwall.
Charles joined the Royal Naval Reserve on 22 September 1915 and served on the trawler True Friend as a Deck Hand. On 21 July 1916 Edward was promoted to Second Hand. On 1 August 1916 he joined the trawler Campania II.
George Henry Folkard
A Corporal with No 1Base Signals Repair Unit, George died on 7th of November 1944 aged 22.
George was born at Lowestoft on 5 December 1921, a son of Frederick M. and Ethel May Folkard. In 1939 his family lived at 5 Broad View Villa, Hall Road, and George was a clerk in an ironmonger’s shop and apprentice shopkeeper.
In 1942 George married Ruth Evelyn Leeds, this was registered in the Lothingland district. In 1944 their home was at 37 Duke’s Head Street.
Charles Henry Fox
An Able Seaman with H.M.S. Queen Mary, Charles died on 31st of May 1916 at the age of 22.
Charles was born at Lowestoft on 14 November 1893, a son of Charles Henry and Emily Lavenia Fox of Blundeston Lowestoft. In 1901 his family lived at Flixton Road, Blundeston. By 1911 his parents were living at The Street, Blundeston.
Charles was working as a farm labourer when he joined the Royal Navy, as a Boy 2nd Class, on 27 July 1909. On 16 September 1913 he joined H.M.S. Queen Mary.
William Edward Fox
A Private with the 12th Battalion, William died on 24th of July 1918 at the age of 22.
William was born at Lowestoft in 1896, a son of William Gilby and Edith Clara Fox. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 3 July 1896 and his family lived at 7 Stanford Street and by 1901 they were living at 61 Stanley Street. William’s mother died and his father remarried. By 1911 his family were living at 247 Clapham Road, and William was a fish packer. In 1913 they lived at 60 Sussex Road, and William was a box maker. Later his family lived at 40 Victoria Road, Tipton, Staffordshire.
Henry Thomas Garwood
A Deck Hand with H.M. Trawler Remindo, Henry died on 2nd of February 1918 at the age of 22.
Frederick Thomas Garwood
A Private with 3 Home Counties Field Ambulance attached 66th Casualty Clearing Station, Frederick died on 18th of November 1918 at the age of 22.
Frederick was born at Lowestoft in 1896, a son of Ephraim Dowe and Tabitha Ann Garwood. In 1901 his family lived at 228 Raglan Street, Lowestoft. By 1911 his family were living at 1 Leiston Road, Lowestoft, and Frederick was a watchmaker's striker. By February 1915 they were living at 78 Alexandra Road Lowestoft.
Stanley Gibbs
A Sergeant with the 11th Battalion, Stanley died on 28th of April 1917 at the age of 22.
Stanley was born at Great Yarmouth in 1894, a son of Frederick and Kate Gibbs. In 1901 his family lived at 65 Winifred Road, Great Yarmouth. In 1911 his family lived at 31 Tennyson Road, Lowestoft, and Stanley worked as a draper’s porter. Later his parents lived at 29 Alexandra Road.
Joseph Walter Godbold
A Seaman with H.M. Trawler Canna. Joseph died on 5th of December 1942 at the age of 22.
Joseph was born at Lowestoft on 8 September 1920, a son of Thomas George and Emily Godbold. In 1921 his family lived at 57 Seago Street, Lowestoft. Later his father lived at 35 Beaconsfield Road, Lowestoft.
Joseph was serving on the Canna, at Lagos, when an accidental explosion took place and the vessel was burnt out. Six of the crew, including Joseph, were killed.
Joseph's sister-in-law, Jessie, was killed in an air raid in 1942. His nephew, Leonard, was killed in 1941.
Arthur Sidney Goddard
A Stoker with H.M.S. Invincible, Arthur died on 31st of May 1916 at the age of 22.
Arthur was born at Barnby on 18 March 1894, a son of John and Florence Mary Goddard. He was baptised at Saint Edmunds Church, Kessingland, on 21 November 1897. In 1901 his family lived at Beach Road, Kessingland, ‘near the church.’ By 1911 they were living at 5 Surrey Place, Field Lane, Kessingland, and Arthur was a fisherman.
In 1912, after committing a series of offences, Arthur was sentenced to two years detention at a borstal (see The Diss Express 10 January 1913, page 8).
Douglas David Gooch
A Seaman with H.M. Trawler Recoil. Douglas died on 28th of September 1940 at the age of 22.
Douglas was born at Lowestoft on 27 March 1918, a son of Robert Philip and Agnes Gooch. He was baptised at Saint John's Church, Lowestoft, and his family lived at 23 Clemence Street and this was their address in 1939. The 1939 Register states that Douglas was 'Royal Naval Reserve - called up in September'.
Douglas was serving on the minesweeping trawler Recoil when it was mined and sank in the English Channel off Portland Bill. Seventeen crew, including Douglas, were killed.
Francis Stanley Gower
A Leading Seaman with H.M.S. Sheldrake, Francis died on 7th of September 1940 at the age of 22.
Francis was born at Lowestoft on 16 December 1917, a son of Francis William and Elsie Maria Gower. Francis was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 13 January 1918, and his family lived at 12 Albany Road, Lowestoft. Francis' father died in 1936 and his mother remarried and the family lived at 63 Worthing Road, Lowestoft.
Dennis Ernest Graver
A Private with the Army Dental Corps, Dennis died on 21st of November 1945.
Dennis was born at Norwich on 16 September 1923, a son of Richard E. and Florence M. Graver. In 1939 his family lived at 100 Essex Street, Norwich.
He married Kathleen Maud Elvin, at Dereham, in early 1945. Subsequently Kathleen lived at Blundeston. Kathleen remarried in 1947.

William George Green
A Gunner with C Battery, 331 Brigade, William died on 30th of March 1918 at the age of 22.
William was born at Ipswich in 1895, a son of George Smyth Frank and Ellen Bessie Green. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 18 August 1895. In 1911 his parents, and siblings, lived at Kirkstall, Leeds, and later at 33 Brunswick Road, Norwich.
In 1901 he lived with his aunt and uncle Elizabeth and William Rose, at 80 Beresford Road. He was still living with them, and at that address, in 1911 when he worked as an apprentice corm merchant.
Ernest Benjamin Grimble
A Leading Seaman with H.M.S. Kelly, Ernest died on 23rd of May 1941 at the age of 22.
Ernest was born at Lowestoft on 18 May 1919, a son of Amos Benjamin and Elizabeth Georgina Grimble of Carlton Colville Suffolk. In 1921 his family lived at Stone Cottage, Union Place, Lowestoft.
Ernest's father died in 1933 and in 1939 his mother worked as an Assistant Nurse at Lothingland House, Oulton, and in 1945 she lived at 20 Lowestoft Road, Carlton Colville.
George Henry Hall
A Private with the 12th Battalion, George died on 20th of September 1917 at the age of 22.
George was born at Lowestoft on 26 June 1895, a son of James and Mary Ann Hall. He was baptised at Christ Church, Lowestoft, on 11 August 1895, and his family lived at 4 Anguish Street. By 1901 they were living at 18 Factory Street, and by 1911 at 3 Worthing Road and George was a drift net fisherman.
William Ward Hall

William was born at Lowestoft on 18 July 1921, a son of Arthur George and Vivetta Maud Hall. In 1939 his family lived at 23 Southwell Road and William was a wooden box maker.
In 1941 William married Hazel Irene Bridge, this was registered in the Lothingland district. Hazel remarried in 1949 and lived at 25 Rounces Lane, Carlton Colville.
William Thomas Jack Hart

William was born at Lowestoft on 12 July 1920, a son of William and Alice Eliza Hart of Lowestoft Suffolk England. Throughout William’s life his family lived at 17 Park Road.
William served with No 8 Squadron, based at Khormaksar, Aden. The role of 8 Squadron was to fly bombing missions against the Italian forces in Eritrea and Somaliland.
Henry George Harvey
A Leading Deck Hand with H.M. Drifter Ocean Fisher, Henry died on 16th of June 1918 at the age of 22.
Henry was born at Lowestoft on 27 January 1896, a son of James and Charlotte Harvey. In 1891 his family lived at 52 Haward Street. By 1911 they were living at 12 Avondale Road, and Henry worked as a fisherman.
Joe Leslie Hicks
A Sergeant with 24th Bn., Joe died on 13th of November 1916 at the age of 22.
Joe was born at Banbury in 1894, a son of Harry John and Gertrude Hicks. In 1901 his family lived at 35 West Bar, Neithrop, Banbury. Later his parents lived at Hawthorn Cottage, Quorn, Loughborough.
By 1911 Joe was a bank clerk living at 51 Station Road, Sudbury.
Fred William Howard
A Private with the 8th Battalion, Fred died on 22nd of October 1917 at the age of 22.
Fred was born at Norwich in 1895, a son of Frederick William and Alice Phoebe Howard. In 1901 his family lived at 33 Norfolk Street, Heigham, Norwich, and by 1911 at 259 Heigham Street, Norwich. Later they moved to Lowestoft and lived at 7 Selby Street (this was still their home in 1939). In 1911 Fred worked as a machine hand at a boot manufacturers.
Donald Harry Howes
A Chief Petty Officer (Pilot) with 741 Squadron H.M.S. Condor, Donald died on 8th of November 1944 at the age of 22.
Donald was born at Corton on 22 April 1922, a son of Harry Edward and Jane Howes. His family lived at 1 Crossways Cottages, Corton.
Donald was a Pilot serving with 741 Squadron, Fleet Air Arm, based at Arbroath. He was flying a Swordfish II aircraft on a navigation exercise over the sea when the aircraft was lost.
Peter William Jeffery
A Pilot Officer with the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, Peter died on 26th of February 1941, aged 22.
Peter was born at Necton, Norfolk, on 17 February 1919, a son of The Reverend Alfred Stephen and Barbara Jeffrey. He was baptised at All Saints’ Church, Necton, on 20 April 1919 and his family lived at Necton where his father was the schoolmaster.
Alfred Ernest Jenkerson
A Deck Hand with H.M. Drifter Datum, Alfred died on 26th of October 1916 at the age of 22.
Alfred was born at Lowestoft on 17 May 1894, a son of Frederick and Eliza Jenkerson. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Kirkley, on 16 September 1894. In 1901 his family lived at 19 Lovewell Road. By 1911 they were living at 44 Lovewell Road, and Alfred was a carpenter’s labourer.
Alfred joined the Royal Naval Reserve on 11 January 1915 and from 16 January 1915 he served on the trawler Datum.
Gordon William Jenner
A Private with the 12th Battalion, Gordon died on 12th of April 1918 at the age of 22.
Gordon was born at Lowestoft in 1896, a son of George Frederick and Violet Maria Jenner. Throughout his life Gordon’s family lived at 39 Reeve Street. In 1911 Gordon was an upholsterer’s apprentice.
Gordon enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft. He joined the Suffolk Regiment, service number 21427, and was posted to France to serve with the 12th Battalion.
William Charles Kemp
A Second Hand with H.M.S. Zaria, William died on 17th of February 1919 at the age of 22.
William was born at Tofts Monks on 29 May 1896, a son of Charles and Elizabeth Kemp. In 1901 his family lived at The Street, Rushmere, and in 1911 at Gisleham Road, Rushmere.
In 1915 William was living at Burnt Hill, Beccles Road, Carlton Colville. William joined the Royal Naval Reserve on 8 June 1915. Initially he served on H.M. Trawler 'Fair View' and served on other trawlers during the war.
Walter Ernest Kent
A Deck Hand with H.M. Trawler Princess Beatrice. Walter died on 5th of October 1914 at the age of 22.
Walter was born at Lowestoft on 22 May 1892, a son of William and Mary Ann Kent. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 3 July 1892, and his family lived at 75 Seago Street and this was their home in 1901. Later they lived at 44 Rotterdam Road, Lowestoft.
In 1911 Walter was the Fourth Hand on the trawler Young Percy at Padstow.
Francis George Kirby
A Private with the 7th Battalion, Francis died on 3rd of July 1916 at the age of 22.
Francis was born at Kirkley on 9 December 1893, a son of Charles James and Phoebe Kirby. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Kirkley, on 6 April 1894. In 1901 his family lived at 16 Lorne Road, and this was Francis’ home for the rest of his life. In 1911 he worked as a bricklayer’s labourer.
Francis enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft and joined the Suffolk Regiment, service number 23471. He was posted to the 7th Battalion in France.
Cyril Knights
A Leading Stoker with H.M.L.S.T. 423. Cyril died on 18th of June 1943 at the age of 22.
Cyril was born at Lowestoft on 28 September 1920. His mother was Alice Elizabeth Knights, nee Turrell, the widow of William Edward James Knights. In 1921 his family lived at 1 Rant Score, Lowestoft, and this was still his mother's address in 1939.
Cyril served on Landing Ship Tank 423. He died at the 2nd General Hospital, Tripoli, from accidental injuries: burns and a fractured femur.
Jeremiah Frederick Lambert
A Private with 8th Bn., Jeremiah died on 31st of July 1917 at the age of 22.
Jeremiah was born at Westhall, Suffolk, in 1895, a son of Robert and Alice Ann Lambert. In 1901 his family lived at Wicker Well Cottages, Somerleyton. By 1911 they had moved to 167 Saint Margarets Road Lowestoft.
During the First World War Jeremiah served in the Army and he joined the Suffolk Regiment. Initially he served with the 4th Battalion, number 3586, and was wounded, his name appearing in the official casualty of 7 September 1916. Once recovered he was posted to the 8th Battalion.
James Leonard Langley
A Gunner with 239 Battery, 77 Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment, James died on 26th of July 1943 aged 22.
James was born at Lowestoft on 15 February 1921, a son of Albert Henry and Lucy Emma Langley. In 1921 his family lived at 10 Fir Lane.
In 1941 James married Audrey Elsie Irene Soanes, this was registered in Lothingland district. Their home was at 97 Seago Street.
John Raymond Lloyd
A Warrant Officer with the Royal New Zealand Air Force, John died on 8th of June 1944 aged 22.
John was born at Wellington, New Zealand, on 8 October 1921, a son of Richard John and Minnie Lloyd. In 1939 his family lived at 36 Argentine Avenue, Wellington. As a young man John enjoyed football and cricket. He worked for Johnson and Company Limited, Wellington, as a warehouseman. Before joining the air force, he served in the Territorial Army for eighteen months.
Victor James Longthorne
A Lance Corporal with the 7th Battalion, Victor died on 15th of October 1944 aged 22.
Victor was born at Lowestoft on 26 July 1922, a son of Charles Stewart and Annie Dora Elisabeth Longthorne. In 1939 his family lived at 12 Fir Lane and Victor was a painter.
George William Mantripp
A Lance Corporal with 2/1st Buckinghamshire Battalion, George died on 19th of July 1916 at the age of 22.
George was born at Kirkley on 6 February 1894, the only Son of George and Anna Mantripp. In 1901 his family lived at 1 Ben Lomond Terrace, Wilson Road, Lowestoft. From 15 September 1908 George attended the Lowestoft School of Science and the school register gives his family's address as 64 Wilson Road. The 1911 Census shows George's family living at 64 Wilson Road and George's occupation is shown as draper's assistant. Note that this census gives his middle name as Jeremiah.
Alfred Victor Mercer
A Private with 14 Light Armoured Motor Battery, Alfred died on 4th of June 1920 at the age of 20.
Alfred was born at Lowestoft in 1898, a son of Alfred and Martha Mercer. In 1901 his family lived at 19 Princes Road, and this was still their address in 1911.
Alfred enlisted in the Army around August 1915. He joined the Suffolk Regiment, service number 21191. About February 1916 he was posted to the France. At some point in 1916 he was transferred to the Machine Gun Corps, service number 3707, and was posted to 51 Company.
Charles Metcalf
A Private with the 9th Battalion, Charles died on 16th of September 1916 at the age of 22.
Charles was born at Chelmsford in 1893, a son of Charles Thomas and Nelly Jane Metcalf. In 1901 his family lived at 119 Bevan Street, Lowestoft. By 1911 they were living at 7 Raglan Street and Charles was a billiard maker. Later his parents lived at 223 London Road South.
Charles attended Oulton School and, from 1 September 1903 to 5 February 1904, was a pupil at Saint John's School, before attending Saint Andrew's School.
Allan Jack Mitchell
A Private with the 7th Battalion, Allan died on 28th of April 1917 at the age of 22.
Allan was born at Kessingland in 1895, a son of Arthur and Ellen Mitchell. In 1901 his family lived at The Beach, Kessingland. In 1911 their home was at Sunnyside, Church Road, Kessingland, and Allan was a junior clerk working for a coal merchant. Later his parents lived at Orient Lodge, Hall Road, Oulton Broad.
John Charles Nathan
A Private with the 4th Battalion, John died on 12th of February 1942 aged 22.
John was born at Lowestoft on 15 November 1919, a son of John Charles and Lilian May Nathan. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 1 January 1920 and his family lived at 71 Beresford Road. By 1939 his parents were living at 6 Suffolk Road.
Joseph Ambrose Newson
An Able Seaman with S.S. Moortoft (Middlesbrough), Joseph died on 3rd of December 1939 aged 22.
Joseph was born at Lowestoft in 1916, a son of Joseph William and Lilian Rose Newson. In 1921 his family lived at 16 Clemence Street, and this was still their home in 1939.
In 1939 Joseph was an Able Seaman working on the S.S. Moortoft, a steam cargo ship. Joseph, and the twelve other crew, were missing, presumed drowned, on 3 December when the Moortoft disappeared in the North Sea. The cause of the ship's loss remains unknown.
Stanley Llewellyn Oakes
A Seaman with H.M. Trawler Commandant, Stanley died on 2nd of April 1916 at the age of 22.
Stanley was born at Corton on 7 October 1893, a son of Joseph and Jane Julia Isadore Oakes. In 1901 his family lived at Mill Lane, Corton. Later his parents lived at Gayes Nurseries, 5 Heath Road, Oulton Broad.
On 31 March 1915 Stanley married Lily May Woods at Saint Peter’s Church, Carlton Colville. Stanley was serving with the Royal Naval Reserve and stated that his home was at Carlton Colville, Lily gave her address as Oulton. Later lily lived at 4 Rock Road Rock Estate, Oulton.
Frederick Osborne
A Private with the 1/6th Cyclist Bn., Frederick died on 20th of February 1915 at the age of 22.
Frederick was born at Lowestoft on 19 April 1892, a son of William and Mary Ann Osborne of 33 Salisbury Road, Lowestoft.
Frederick worked as a waiter at the Imperial Hotel, Lowestoft.
He volunteered in October 1914.
Frederick died at the Isolation Hospital, Lowestoft, 'of a disease contracted while on active service.'
