Also The Buffs (East Kent Regiment)
The Buffs was one of the first infantry regiments in the British Army. With origins dating back to 1572, it took part in many campaigns in the years that followed. In 1961, after nearly 400 years of distinguished service, the regiment became part of The Queen's Own Buffs, The Royal Kent Regiment.
1st Bn.
Ernest Isaac Hanton
A Private with the 1st Battalion, Ernest died on 7th of December 1917 at the age of 19.
Ernest was born at Lowestoft on 4 October 1898. He was baptised at Saint John's Church, Lowestoft, on 28 October 1898, a son of Isaac and Louisa Hanton, and his family lived at 32 Maidstone Road. Ernest attended Hervey Street School and, from 7 January 1907, was a pupil at Saint John's School. Between 1907 and 1911 his family moved from Maidstone Road to 2 Clarence Road. Later his parents lived at Sanatorium Lodge, Rotterdam Road, Lowestoft.
William Howlett
A Private with the 1st Battalion, William died on 24th of June 1917 at the age of 28.
William was born at Lowestoft in 1889, a son of Robert and Mary Ann Howlett. In 1891 his family lived at Laundry Road. William's mother died in 1895 and in 1901 William and his father lodged with Maria Baldry at 92 Cambridge Road, Lowestoft. William's father died around 1908. In 1911 William was till lodging with Maria Baldry at 92 Cambridge Road and he worked as a grocer's assistant.

Charles Rodwell
A Private with 6th Bn. Charles died on 3rd of May 1917 at the age of 40.
Charles was born at Mendham, Suffolk, in 1876, a son of Charles and Elizabeth Rodwell. In 1881 his family lived at Oulton Road, Oulton, and by 1891 at Gordon Terrace, Oulton Broad, and Charles worked as a bricklayer's boy. In 1901 they lived at Oulton Street and by 1911 Charles' mother had died and his father lived at 15 Marsh Road, Oulton Broad.

George Alexander Blowers
A Private with 7th Bn. George died on 1st of July 1916 at the age of 19.
George was born at Barnby in 1897, a son of George and Mary Blowers. In 1901 his family lived at Carlton Road, Pakefield. By 1911 they were living at 2 Carlton Terrace, Carlton Road, Pakefield. Later they lived at 3 Rochester Road, Lowestoft.
William George Borrett
A Private with the 7th Battalion, William died on 19th of July 1918 at the age of 24.
William was born at Lowestoft in 1894, a son of Julius John and Elizabeth Ann Borrett. He was baptised at Saint John's Church, Lowestoft, on 7 October 1894, and his family lived at Fern Cottage, Rotterdam Road. In 1901 his family lived at 55 Stanley Street and, by 1911, at 69 Rotterdam Road, Lowestoft, and William worked as a market gardener.
Sidney John Carr
A Private with 7th Bn. Sidney died on 30th of September 1916 at the age of 29.
Sidney was born at Lowestoft on 18 July 1887, a son of James George and Sarah Ann Carr. He was baptised at Christchurch, Lowestoft, on 10 August 1887, and his family lived at 4 Church Road. Sidney attended Clapham Road School and, on 26 February 1894, became a pupil at Saint Margaret's School, Lowestoft. By 1901 his family were living at 50 Ipswich Road and Sidney worked as a grocer's boy. In 1911 Sidney worked as a blacksmith's striker.
Walter Cook
A Private with the 7th Battalion, Walter died on 12th of August 1916 at the age of 23.
Walter was born at Lowestoft in 1893, a son of John and Harriet Frances Cook. In 1901 Walter's family lived at Waterford Villa, Alexandra Road. His father died in 1901/2 and by 1906 Walter's family were living at 83 Rotterdam Road. In 1911 Walter was a grocer's assistant. In 1916 his mother lived at 5 Avondale Road. Later she lived at 79 Norwich Road, Lowestoft.
Harold Edward Dowsing
A Private with 7th Bn., Harold died on 3rd of May 1917 at the age of 23.
Harold was born at Lowestoft in 1894, a son of Charles William and Edith Mary Dowsing. In 1901 his family lived at 36 Edinburgh Road, Lowestoft. By 1911 they were living at 87 Rotterdam Road and Harold worked as a porter at a new making works. Later his family lived at 38 Crown Street, Lowestoft.
Stanley Edward James Hadingham
A Private with the 7th Battalion, Stanley died on 13th of October 1917 at the age of 20.
Stanley was born at Ditchingham, Norfolk, in 1894, a son of James and Alice E. Hadingham. In 1901 they lived at Cypress Cottage, Oulton, by 1911 they were living at 4 Park Road Cottages, Rock Estate, Oulton Broad, and Stanley worked as a carter. Later in 1911 he began work as a general labourer for the Great Eastern Railway at Lowestoft.
John James Kerridge
A Private with 7th Bn. John died on 12th of August 1916 at the age of 21.
John was born at Cransford, Framlingham, Suffolk, in 1895, a son of Joseph William and Catherine Rebecca Kerridge. He was baptised at Saint Peter's Church, Cransford, on 20 October 1895. By 1901 his family were living at 83 Cambridge Road, Lowestoft, and by 1911 at 60 Saint Margaret's Road, and John, like his father, was a bootmaker. Later his parents lived at 15 Ipswich Road, Lowestoft. Note some civil records refer to John by his middle name, James.
Stanley Henry John Moore
A Private with 7th Bn. Stanley died on 22nd of February 1918 at the age of 19.
Stanley was born at Lowestoft on 19 August 1898, a son of Henry George and Jane Moore. He was baptised at Saint John's Church, Lowestoft, on 14 October 1898, and his family lived at 2 Ivy Terrace, Colville Road. From 10 July 1898 Stanley attended Kirkley School. In 1901 they lived at 7 Ivory Terrace, Colville Road, and later at 6 College Road, Kirkley.
Edmund Horace Oliver
A Private with 7th Bn. Edmund died on 19th of August 1916 at the age of 20.
Edmund was born at Brightlingsea, Essex, in 1896, a son of Edmund and Edith Oliver. he was baptised at All Saints' Church, Brightlingsea, on 19 September 1896. In 1901 his family lived at 36 Upper Park Road, Brightlingsea. By 1911 they were living at 6 Gilpin Terrace, Rock Estate, Oulton Broad, and Edmund was a boat builder's apprentice. Later his family lived at 1 Broad View, 30 Bridge Road, Oulton Broad, Lowestoft.
Thomas Henry Secret
A Private with 7th Bn. Thomas died on 29th of August 1915 at the age of 25.
Thomas was born at Kirkley in 1890, a son of George and Sarah Ann Secret. His mother died soon after Thomas was born.
Walter Wigg
A Private with 7th Bn. Walter died on 22nd of August 1918 at the age of 34.
Walter was born at Leiston, Suffolk, in 1884, a son of James and Hannah Wigg. In 1891 his family lived at Snape Road and in 1901 their address was 1 Snape Road, Leiston, and Walter was a boiler maker's labourer. In 1911 his family were living at 32 Paradise Place, Leiston, and Walter was a bricklayer's labourer.
