11th Bn.

Stanley Arthur Thacker

A Lance Corporal with the 11th Battalion, Stanley died on 18th of May 1917 at the age of 22.

Stanley was born at Lowestoft on 21 August 1894, a son of Daniel and Caroline Eliza Thacker. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Kirkley, on 12 October 1894, and his family lived at Carlton Colville. From 31 August 1898 Stanley attended Kirkley School and his family lived at Kirkley Run. In 1901 their home was at Carlton Road. By 1911 they were living at Eddystone Villa, Kirkley Run.

Arthur George Parry

A Private with the 12th Battalion, Arthur died on 16th of May 1917 at the age of 20. 

Arthur was born at Bungay in 1897, a son of Peter and Elizabeth Parry. In 1901 his family lived at 7 Laundry Lane, Lowestoft. By 1911 they were living at 36 Norfolk Street and Arthur was a houseboy at a lady’s house. 

Arthur enlisted in the Army at Norwich. He joined the Middlesex Regiment, service number 32364. He was posted to France to serve with the 12th Battalion.

Ernest George Weavers

A Private with 13th Bn., Ernest died on 28th of September 1915 at the age of 26. 

Ernest was born at Carlton Colville in 1890, a son of Benjamin and Rosanna Weavers. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Carlton Colville, on 29 July 1890, and his family lived at Carlton Colville. A note in the baptism register says ‘Died for England September 26th 1915’.

In 1891 his family lived at Bell Corner, Carlton Colville. In 1901 they lived at Mortuway (sic), Carlton Colville. Later his parents lived at Peacock Terrace, Carlton Colville.

Joseph Henry Rivett

Joseph Henry Rivett

A Private with the 17th Battalion, Joseph died on 4th of December 1917 at the age of 34. 

Joseph was born at Kirkley in 1883, a son of George Newark and Elizabeth Rivett. In 1891 his family lived at 5 Lovewell Road and this was still the family home in 1901 when Joseph was a carpenter, probably working with his father. 

On 2 March 1905 Joseph married Edith Warford at All Saints’ Church, Pakefield. Joseph was a carpenter living at Kirkley and Edith lived at Pakefield. In 1911 they lived at 33 Lorne Road, and Joseph was a carpenter.

Frederick  Clarke

Frederick Clarke

A Private with the 18th Battalion, Fred died on 24th of September 1918 at the aged 40. 

Frederick, often known as Fred, was born at Lowestoft on 3 July 1878, a son of Charles and Charlotte (Lottie) Clarke. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 6 October 1878. In 1881 his family lived at 22 Saint Peter’s Street and in 1891 they lived at 309 Raglan Street, and in 1901 at 7 Jacob’s Street, and Fred was a housepainter.  

Arthur George Lambert

A Private with the 18th Battalion, Arthur died on 20th of July 1916 at the age of 25. 

Arthur was born at Lowestoft in 1891, a son of Edward George and Alice Kathleen Lambert. He was baptised at Saint John’s Church on 5 July 1891 and his family lived at 5 Grosvenor Road. In 1901 they lived at 8 Windsor Road and they were still living there in 1911 when Arthur worked as a joiner.

William George Walker

A Private with the 1st Battalion, William died on 3rd of August 1918 at the age of 21. 

William was born at Pakefield in 1897, a son of William and Annie Bessie Walker. In 1901 his family lived at Beach Street, Pakefield, and by 1911 at 35 Saint George’s Road, and William was a telegraph messenger.

Samuel James Grimmer

A Private with the 21st Battalion, Samuel died on 24th of November at the age of 20. 

Samuel was born at Mundham, Norfolk, in 1897, a son of Samuel and Emily Elizabeth Grimmer. In 1901 his family lived at 31 The Street, Lound, and by 1911 they were living at Lound Street, Blundeston, and Samuel was a farm labourer. Later his mother lived at 71 Northumberland Street, Norwich, before moving to Hunters Cottages, Kessingland Beach.

Samuel enlisted in the Army at Norwich. He joined the Middlesex Regiment, service number G/24464, and was posted to the 23rd Battalion in France.

Leonard Walter Womack

A Private with the 2nd Battalion, Leonard died on 16th of September 1917.

Leonard was born at Lowestoft on 28 March 1892, a son of William George and Honor Womack. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 29 April 1892, and his family lived at 32 Crown Street. In 1901 his family lived at 81 Seago Street. By 1911 Leonard’s mother had died, his father remarried, and the family lived at 6 Kent Road and Leonard worked as a sawyer for a timber merchant. Leonard’s sister, Mrs. Abia Ethel Mulberry, lived at 98 Beeches Road.

William Babbage

A Private with the 4th Battalion, William died on 16th of April 1917 at the age of 31.

William was born at Helston, Cornwall, in 1885, a son of William and Ellen Babbage. By 1891 his family were living at Upper Street, Stratford Saint Mary, Suffolk. In 1901 they lived at 4 Saint Mary’s Place, Bridewell Lane, Bury St. Edmunds, and William was a ginger beer manufacturer and this was still their address in 1911 when William was a brewer’s assistant. 

Albert Noel Bessey

A Private with the 4th Battalion, Albert died on 21st of April 1917 at the age of 31. 

Albert was born at Oulton in 1885, a son of Charles and Amelia Bessey. In 1891 his family lived next to the Devonshire Arms, at Oulton Road, Lowestoft, and this was still their address in 1901. By 1911 Albert’s father had died and they had moved to 41 Princes Road, Lowestoft, and Albert was a market gardener.

Charles Joseph Kemp

A Private with the 4th Battalion, Charles died on 9th of October 1918 aged 39. 

Charles was born at Lowestoft in 1879, a son of Arthur and Emily Kemp. In 1881 his family lived at 4 Wrights Cottages, Beccles Road, Lowestoft. By 1901 they were living at Oulton Street, Oulton, and Charles worked as a bricklayer, possibly with his father. 

Charles married Alruna Bird at Kessingland on 1 September 1904. In 1911 they lived at High Street, Kessingland, and Alruna's address, when Charles died, was Days Cottages, High Street, Kessingland.
