Harold Aldred

Harold Arthur Paget Aldred

A Private with 1/1st Bn., Harold died on 21st of September 1918 at the age of 24. 

Harold was born at Lowestoft on 21 February 1894, a son of Arthur and Isabel Maude Aldred. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 14 March 1894 and at that time his family lived at 13 Thurston Road. By 1901 his family were living at 233 Raglans Street, Lowestoft. In 1911 Harold's family were living at 5 Beresford Road, and Harold worked as a milk boy. 

Frank  Cullingford

Frank Cullingford

A Lance Corporal with the 1/1st Battalion, Frank died on 8th of August 1918 at the age of 23. 

Frank was born at Lowestoft on 2 January 1895, a son of Charles and Jane Cullingford. On 7 June 1898, Frank became a pupil at Kirkley School, and his family lived at 173 London Road, and this was still their home in 1901. By 1911 they were living at Fernleigh, Carlton Road, and Frank was a shop assistant at a grocer’s. Later, after his father’s death, Frank’s mother lived at 13 Orchard Street, Dereham Road, Norwich.    

Sidney Towlson Mayhew

A Private with the 1/1st Battalion, Sidney died on 31st of July 1917 at the age of 32.

Sidney was born at Norwich in 1886, a son of James and Rosa Mayhew. In 1891 his family lived at 11 Caernarvon Road, Norwich. By 1901 they were living at 14 New Market Street, Heigham, Norwich, and Sidney was a printer’s clerk. In 1911 they lived at 60 Newmarket Street, Norwich, and Sidney worked as an accountant’s clerk. 

Arthur Henry Nobes

A Private with the 1/1st Battalion, Arthur died on 8th of August 1918 at the age of 21. 

Herbert John Simonds

A Private with the 1/1st Battalion, Herbert died on 21st of March 1917 at the age of 38. 

Herbert was born at Langmere, Norfolk, in 1879, a son of Robert Beart and Ellen Simonds. In 1881 they lived at Gissing, Norfolk, and by 1891 the family had moved to Lowestoft and lived at 94 London Road, Kirkley. Later his parents lived at Diss, Norfolk.

In 1901 Herbert had a confectionery shop at 17 Saint Peters Street. In 1906 Herbert married Lily Tredgill at Eye, Suffolk. In 1911 their home was at 17 Saint Peters Street where they ran a tobacconist and confectionery shop.  

Stuart Leo Wilson

A Private with the 1/1st Battalion, Stuart died on 31st of July 1917 at the age of 20. 

Stuart was born at Lowestoft in 1897, a son of Frederick Charles and Miranda Wilson, and twin brother of Elvin. In 1911 the family lived at 78 Morton Road, and, by 1915, at 4 May Villas, Church Road, South Lowestoft.

In 1911 Stuart, and his brother Elvin, got into trouble for stealing pigeons. 

Christopher Woodhouse

A Private with the 1/1st Battalion, Christopher died on 27th of May 1917 at the age of 25. 

Christopher was born at Sheringham on 2 May 1892, a son of William Henry and Caroline Woodhouse. He was baptised at Upper Sheringham on 22 July 1894. In 1901 his family lived at Lifeboat Square, Sheringham. By 1911 they were living at Weston Street, Sheringham, and Christopher was a general labourer for the county council. 

Christopher volunteered and enlisted in the Army at Norwich. He joined the Norfolk Regiment, service number 3519.

Arthur Hector Coleby

A Private with the 1st Battalion, Arthur died on 3rd of August 1943 aged 34. 

2nd Bn.

David Richie Roper

A Private with the 2nd Battalion, David died on 21st of September 1944 aged 38. 

David was born at Chalfield, Suffolk, on 11 May 1906, a son of John William and Maud Roper. In 1911 his family lived at The Street, North Cove, Suffolk, and by 1921 they were living at 35 Pudding Moor, Beccles, and David worked for H.G. Rose, Corn and Coal Merchants, at Beccles, doing odd-jobs.
