Henry George Adams

A Mate with Steam Trawler Labrador (Lowestoft), Henry died on 23rd of January 1915 at the age of 34. 

Henry was born at Pakefield on 14 June 1881, a son of Henry George and Sarah Adams. He was baptised at All Saints' Church, Pakefield, on 13 July 1884. Henry attended Cunningham Infants School from 27 August 1884 and Cunningham Mixed School from 25 June 1888. In 1891 his family lived at 10 Beach Street, Pakefield, and by 1901 were living at 51 Tonning Street and Henry was a fisherman. 

Alfred John Adams

A Private with the 2nd Battalion, Alfred died on 18th of August 1916 at the age of 34. 

Alfred was born at Kessingland in 1883, a son John and Harriet Adams. In 1891 his family lived at a ‘cottage by Moss Road’ (sic), Kessingland. By 1901 they were living at Barn Road, Kessingland, and Alfred was a yardman on a farm. In 1911 they were still living at Barn Road, Kessingland, and Alfred was a farm labourer. 

Alfred enlisted in the Army at Bury St. Edmunds. He served with the Suffolk Regiment, service number 26788. William went to France in 1916 to join the 2nd Battalion. 

Francis James Balls

A Private with 12th Battalion. Francis died on 7th of December 1916 at the age of 34. 

Francis was born at Lowestoft on 16 December 1880, a son of William and Charlotte Balls. He was baptised at Saint John's Church, Lowestoft, on 4 February 1881, and his family lived at 3 Haward Street. Later they lived at 8 Haward Street and, in 1901, at 12 Haward Street. 

William John Bessey

A Private with 10th Bn., William died on 29th of June 1915 at the age of 34. 

William was born at Oulton in 1880, a son of William and Sarah Bessey. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Carlton Colville, on 31 October 1880. In 1881 his family lived at The Street, Oulton, and in 1891 they were living at Yarmouth Road, Oulton. By 1901 William’s mother had died and his family lived next to Rose Cottage, The Street, Oulton, and in by 1911 they were living at 4 The Street, Oulton, and William worked as a plumber’s mate with the water and gas company.  

James Frederick Blyth

An Engineman with H.M. Trawler Kingston Beryl. James died on 25th of December 1943 at the age of 34. 

James was born at Lowestoft on 22 October 1909, a son of Clifford and Rose May Blyth (note this is verified by Pension Record Card details for his father, but some sources give his father's name as James). In 1911 has family lived at 2 Anguish Street.

Alfred Amos Brown

A Second Hand with H.M. Drifter George V, Alfred died on 3rd June of 1917 at the age of 34.

Alfred was born at Sotterley, on 18 August 1882, a son of Amos and Ellen Brown. In 1891 his family were living at 2 Kiln Road, Sotterly, but by 1901 they had moved to London Road, Kessingland, and Alfred had begun work as a fisherman.

William Austin Chandler

William Austin Chandler

A Private with the 2nd Battalion, William died on 18th of June 1917 at the age of 34. 

William was born at Lowestoft in 1883, a son of George William and Eliza Chandler. His family lived at 16 Thurston Road, but have not been found in the 1891 and 1901 censuses. 

On 14 October 1905, William married Florence Alice Read at Saint Peter’s Church, Kirkley. William was a labourer and they both lived at Kirkley. In 1911 they lived at ‘rear of 41’ Thurston Road, and William was an assistant bailiff at the County Court. Later Florence lived at 11 Southwell Road.

William Charles Clark

An Able Seaman with the Royal Navy, William died on 18th of April 1919 at the age of 34.

William was born at Lowestoft on 9 August 1884, a son of Charles and Ann Eliza Clark. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 29 August 1884. In 1891 his family lived at 13 Seago Street, Lowestoft, and, by 1901, had moved to 67 Bevan Street. William's father died and his mother married Samuel Welton in 1911. They lived at 3 Flensburgh Street, Lowestoft.

A Sapper with 250 Tunnelling Company, Thomas died on 4th of October 1917 at the age of 34. 

Thomas was born at Lowestoft on 12 July 1883, a son of Robert Crane and Elizabeth Claxton. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 2 September 1883. In 1891 his family lived at 2 Wide’s Score. By 1901 they were living at 121 Wollaston Road and Thomas was a coal dealer, probably working with his father.

A Private with the 1st Battalion, Arthur died on 3rd of August 1943 aged 34.

An Engineman with H.M.S. Pembroke, Thomas died on 3rd of September 1917 at the age of 34. 

Thomas was born at Lowestoft on 16 November 1882, a son of Robert Richard and Hannah Eliza Cropley. He was baptised at Christchurch, Lowestoft, on 6 December 1882. In 1891 his family lived at 23 The Hemplands, and this was still their home in 1901, when Thomas worked as a fisherman. 

Alfred Charles Crowford

An Engineer with Steam Drifter Reliance (Lowestoft), Alfred died on 7th of October 1917 at the age of 34. 

Alfred was born at Lowestoft in 1883, a son of John and Hannah Eliza Crowford. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Kirkley, on 29 September 1883. In 1891 his family lived at Horn Hill. By 1901 they were living at 4 Mill Road, Horn Hill, and Alfred was a stationary engine cleaner.  

Wilfred Charles Dawson

A Corporal with B Battery, 190th Brigade, Wilfred died on 26th of September 1916 at the age of 34. 

Wilfred was born at Great Yarmouth in 1882, a son of Charles William and Margaret Rachael Dawson. In 1891 his family lived at 14 Wellesley Road, Great Yarmouth, and this was still their home in 1901. 

Wilfred attended the University of Birmingham and then became a teacher at West Street School, Farnham. By 1911 he was the headteacher at Shackleford School, Surrey, and then became headmaster of a Carshalton School. 

Thomas James Bertram Dickens

An Engineman with H.M. Trawler Sisters Melville, Thomas died on 13th of February 1917 at the age of 34. 

Thomas was born at Cardiff on 31 October 1882, a son of Thomas James and Mary Dickens. In 1891 his family lived at 16 Constellation Road, Raoth, Cardiff, and by 1901 they were living at 14 Walkers Road, Roath, and Thomas was a chemist’s assistant. 

In 1911 Thomas lived with his sister, Mable Job, and family at 57 Waterloo Road, Hakin, Milford Haven, and he worked as an engineer at sea. 

William Arnall Durrant

A Driver with the Royal Army Service Corps, William died on 6th of March 1942 at the age of 34. 

William was born at Lowestoft on 1 April 1907, a son of Dennis George and Alice Jane Durrant. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 30 April 1907 and his family lived at 146 Saint Peter's Street. By 1911 they were living at 66 Essex Road. 

William married Martha Emma Peek in 1938. In 1939 they lived at 10 Rotterdam Road and William was an electrical public lighting attendant.

Henry Alfred Dyer

A Seaman H.M.S. Almanzora, Henry died on 30th of October 1918 aged 34. 

Henry was born at Carlton Colville on 30 July 1884, a son of William and Sophia Dyer. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Carlton Colville, on 14 September 1884. In 1891 his family lived at 13 South Elmham Terrace, Carlton Colville. Henry’s mother died in 1899. In 1905 Henry lived at 40 Southwold Road, the family home of his future wife.

Arthur Robert Grimble

A Marine with the Siege Regiment, Arthur died on 13th of September 1944 at the age of 34. 

Arthur was born at Lowestoft on 7 July 1910, a son of Robert Charles and Esther Sarah Grimble. Arthur was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 2 August 1910 and his family lived at 5 Water Lane and this was still their home in 1911. By 14 July 1914 Arthur's family were living at Flora Terrace, Flora Road, Pakefield, and from this date Arthur attended Pakefield Council/Junior School.

Arthur's father died in 1918 while serving with the Army Service Corps.

Felix Hugh Gwilliam

A Signalman, with the Signal Section 21 Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Felix died on 19th of January 1945 aged 34.

Felix was born at Lowestoft on 7 July 1910, a son of James George and Amelia Bond Gwilliam. In 1921 his family lived at Harbour House, Lowestoft, as his father was the Harbour Master. 

In 1934 Felix married Hilda Florence Setterfield, this was registered in the Mutford district. In 1939 they lived at 48 Salisbury Road and Felix was a wholesale grocery and provision salesman. After the war Hilda lived at Limes Cottage, Forncett Saint Peter, Norfolk. 

George Utting Hart

An Able Seaman with H.M.S. Copra, George died on 8th of October 1947 aged 34. 

George was born at Kessingland on 17 September 1913, a son of George Ernest and Elizabeth Margaret Hart. He was baptised at Saint Edmund’s Church, Kessingland, on 16 November 1913 and his family lived at Davy’s Cottages, The Beach, Kessingland. In 1939 his family were living at 64 Crown Street and George was a fisherman and a member of the naval reserve. 

In 1939 George married Ellen May Tapsell, this was registered in the Lothingland district. By 1947 their home was at 10 Marham Road.

Walter Henry

An Able Seaman with H.M.S. Cressy. Walter died on 22nd of September 1914 at the age of 34.

Walter was born at Sprowston, Norwich, on 20 August 1882, a son of William Robert and Minnie Henry. In 1891 his family lived at Farm Yard Cottage, Salhouse Road, Rackheath, and later at 48 Lingwood, Norwich.

Walter had been working as a labourer when he joined the Royal Navy, as a Boy 2nd Class, on 14 September 1892. He served until 6 March 1908 and the next day he joined the Royal Fleet Reserve, number RFR/CH/B/4971.

Robert James Hines

A Private with the 2/8th Battalion, Robert died on 19th of August 1917 at the age of 34.

Robert was born at Oulton Broad on 30 September 1883, a son of James and Mary Ann Hines. He was baptised at Saint Michael’s Church, Oulton, on 24 February 1884. In 1891 his family lived at Clyde Cottage, Beccles Road, Oulton, and this was still their home in 1901 when Robert worked as a grocer’s assistant. Later his parents lived at Victoria Road, Oulton. 

Robert William Jenkerson

An Engineman with H.M. Drifter Datum, Robert died on 26th of October 1916 at the age of 34. 

Robert was born at Lowestoft on 12 August 1882, a son of Robert and Ellen Jenkerson. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 1 October 1882. In 1891 his family lived at 12 Stanford Street and this was still the family home in 1901 when Robert was a sailmaker’s apprentice. By 1911 his family were living at 27 Stanford Street and Robert was a stoker on a steam-ship. 

Viola Gladys Jones

A Civilian, Viola died on 17th of May 1941 at the age of 34. 

Viola was born at Lowestoft on 28th March 1907, a daughter of Joseph and Charlotte (Lottie) Corbin. In 1911 her family lived at 29 Sandringham Road. During World War One Viola's brother Alonzo was killed in 1914 and her brother Frederick in 1917.

Viola married Sidney Robert Jones at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 1st October 1927.

Ernest Alfred Kemp

A Corporal with the 10th Battalion, Ernest died on 8th of February 1945 aged 34. 

Ernest was born at Walthamstow on 20 April 1910, a son of Charles T. and Anna Maude Kemp. In 1911 his family lived at Finningham, Suffolk. By 1921 they were living at Blo Norton, Norfolk. 

In 1936 Ernest married Ethel Edna Rice, this was registered in the Thetford district. By 1939 they were living at 197 Stradbroke Road, Pakefield, and Ernest was an insurance agent. In 1945 their home was at 203 Stradbroke Road. Ethel later remarried. 

James William Kemp

A Private with 1/4th Bn. James died on 25th of September 1915 at the age of 34. 

James was born at Somerleyton in 1881, a son of James William and Mary Ann Kemp. For all of his life James' family lived at 3 Brickfields Cottages, The Street, Somerleyton. In 1911 James worked as a wherryman with the Somerleyton Estate. 

James married Hannah Maria Lound, at Norwich, in 1911. They lived at 3 Old Barge Yard, King Street, Norwich.

Audrey May Morgan

A Civilian, Audrey died on 13th of January 1942 aged 34. 

Audrey was born at Lowestoft on 15 December 1907, a daughter of Herbert John and Lucy Emma Moyse. She was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Carlton Colville, on 26 July 1908, and her family lived at 4 Gordon Terrace, Oulton Road. By 1911 her family were living at 3 Diamond Terrace, Beccles Road, Oulton Broad, and this was still their home in 1939 when Audrey worked as a kitchen help. Note that Audrey’s family’s address was also known as 75 Beccles Road.

Bernard William Moyse

A Second Engineer Officer with the tug S. S. Aid (London), Bernard died on 29th of November 1940 aged 34.

Bernard was born at Kessingland in 1906, a son of Ernest and Blanche Pauline Moyse. He was baptised at Saint Edmund’s Church, Kessingland, on 1 April 1906. In 1911 his family lived at 2 Prospect Place, Kessingland, and this was still their home in 1921 when Bernard was a grocer’s assistant working for Mr. G. Brock at Lowestoft Road, Kessingland. 

Frederick James Munnings

A Lance Corporal with the 2nd Battalion, Frederick died on 15th of November 1914 at the age of 34.

Frederick was born at Lowestoft in October 1880, a son of William David and Anna Maria Munnings. In 1881 his family lived at 37 Saint Peter's Street, Lowestoft. Frederick's father died and in 1884 his mother married George Smith. In 1891 his family lived at 111 Saint Peter's Street. 

Frederick attended Saint John's School and, from 4 May 1891, Saint Margaret's Boys School. 

James Leonard Muttitt

A Deck Hand with H.M. Drifter Cosmos, James died on 15th of February 1918 at the age of 34. 

James was born at Hulver on 13 April 1883, a son of Robert and Amy Muttitt. He was baptised at Saint Mary’s Church, Henstead, on 11 November 1883. In 1891 his family lived at Toad Row, Henstead, and this was still their address in 1901 and 1911. 

In 1901 James worked on the trawler George at Newlyn, Cornwall. 

William Rayner Peek

A Mate with Steam Drifter W. A. Massey (Lowestoft), William died on 11th of March 1918 aged 34. 

William was born at Pakefield on 10 July 1883, a son of William and Elizabeth Peek. William was baptised at All Saints’ Church, Pakefield, on 12 August 1883. On 31 August 1886 William became a pupil at Cunningham School and his family lived at Pakefield Street. In 1891 his family lived at 10 Beach Street, Pakefield. 

Percival Joseph Prior

A Shipwright 1st Class with H.M.S. Pelican, Percival died on 22nd of April 1940 at the age of 34. 

Percival was born at Lowestoft on 8 November 1904, a son of Joseph and Maria Prior. In 1911 his family lived at Chamberlain's Cottages, Oulton Broad, and by 1921 at Holme Lea, Walmer Road, Lowestoft, and Percival worked as a shipwright's apprentice with W. Warden, Shipwright, at Commercial Road, Lowestoft. 

In 1929 Percival marries Catherine Jane Gobell Harvey. Their home was at 43 Saint Leonards Road, Lowestoft. In 1939 Catherine lived at 52 Wolseley Road, Great Yarmouth. 

Edward Baldwyn Pugh

A Sergeant with 251 Field Park Company, Edward died on 10th of December 1942 aged 34. 

Edward was born at Ilford, Essex, on 4 December 1908, a son of The Reverend Baldwyn de Fonmartin and Emily Marion Pugh. He was baptised at Saint John the Baptist Church, Buckhurst Hill, on 17 January 1909 and his family lived at 5 Stamforth Road, Newbury Park, Ilford. In 1921 his family lived at Kings Cottage, Monnington on Wye, Brobury, Herefordshire. By 1934 Cuthbert’s father had become the Rector of Gisleham and his family lived at Gisleham Rectory. 

James Ernest Bly Redgrave

A Private with 6th Bn., James died on 9th of April 1918 at the age of 34. 

James was born at Lowestoft on 31 January 1884, a son of Edmund and Ann M. Redgrave. James was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 21 June 1884. In 1891 his family lived Sudbury Cottages, 1 Bevan Street, Lowestoft. By 1911 his family were living at 12 Sandringham Road and James was a fish packer.

At some point James had served with the Suffolk Regiment. 

Joseph Henry Rivett

A Private with the 17th Battalion, Joseph died on 4th of December 1917 at the age of 34. 

Joseph was born at Kirkley in 1883, a son of George Newark and Elizabeth Rivett. In 1891 his family lived at 5 Lovewell Road and this was still the family home in 1901 when Joseph was a carpenter, probably working with his father. 

On 2 March 1905 Joseph married Edith Warford at All Saints’ Church, Pakefield. Joseph was a carpenter living at Kirkley and Edith lived at Pakefield. In 1911 they lived at 33 Lorne Road, and Joseph was a carpenter.

Frederick William James Rushmore

A Deck Hand with Steam Trawler Labrador (Lowestoft), Frederick died on 23rd of January 1915 at the age of 34.

Frederick was born at Pakefield on 5 October 1881, a son of William Frederick and Elizabeth Ann Rushmore. He was baptised at All Saints' Church, Pakefield, on 13 November 1881. Frederick attended Cunningham Infants School from 13 April 1885 and, from 25 June 1888, Cunningham Mixed School. In 1891 his family lived at 2 Beach Street, Pakefield. 

Frederick Charles Sayer

A Skipper with H.M. Trawler Gabir, Frederick died on 24th of May 1918 at the age of 34. 

Frederick was born at Carlton Colville on 19 March 1884, a son of Charles and Alice Sayer. His family has not been traced in the 1891 Census, but in 1901 they were living at 7 Victoria Road, Carlton Colville, and Frederick, like his father, was a wherryman. 

George Edward Hickelton Sparrow

A Second Hand with H.M.S. Victory, George died on 24th of November 1918 at the age of 34. 

George was born at Lowestoft on 3 October 1884, a son of Frederick George and Hannah Jane Sparrow. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 4 July 1886. In 1891 his family lived at 2 Sunrise Cottages, Whapload Road. Later they lived at 112 Beccles Road. 

In 1908 George was the skipper of the trawler John and Emma, LT 204. 

William Gaul Storey

A Chief Petty Officer with H.M.S. Windemere. William died on 20th of April 1946 at the age of 34.

William was born on 9 September 1911, a son of Agnes Storey. William's father was William Gaul and Agnes was his 'unmarried wife' (evidence from 1911 Census and William Gaul's pension record card). William Gaul was killed in action in 1918 whilst serving with the Royal Dublin Fusiliers. William lived with guardians at Great Yarmouth; first with Mrs. Roshier, at Regent Road, and then, in 1921, with the Thain family at 81 Churchill Road.

Henry Edward Talbot

An Able Seaman with H.M.S. Grenade, Henry died on 29th of May 1940 at the age of 34. 

Henry was born at Wimbledon on 24 July 1905, a son of Henry George and Martha Talbot. On 17 December 1905 he was baptised at Holy Trinity Church, Wimbledon, and hid family lived at 65 Palmerston Road, Wimbledon. In 1911 his family lived at 516 London Road, Lowestoft.

William George Thacker

A Cook with the steam trawler William Humphries, William died on 21st November 1939 at the age of 34.

William was born at Pakefield on 15 June 1905, a son of Charles Henry and Blanche Anne Thacker. In 1911 his family lived at 4 Flora Terrace, Carlton Road, Pakefield, and this was still their home in 1921. 

In 1921 William was the Cook on the W. J. Gearing’s trawler D.J.G., LT 260, based at Lowestoft.
