Daniel Robert Francis

A Deck Hand with Steam Trawler Derwent (Boston), Daniel died on 26th of January 1920 at the age of 24. 

Daniel was born at Lowestoft in 1895, a son of Daniel and Margaret (Maggie) Francis. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 4 October 1895 and his family lived at 29 Jacob’s Street, which would be Daniel’s home for the rest of his life. In 1911 Daniel worked as a labourer at the fish yard. 

Cornelius Gillings

Cornelius Gillings

A Private with the 7th Battalion, Cornelius died on 13th of October 1915 at the age of 24. 

Cornelius was born at Blundeston in 1891, a son of Charles Elijah and Ellen Gillings. He was baptised at Saint Mary’s Church, Blundeston, on 7 June 1891. In 1891 his family lived at High Street, Blundeston. By 1901 their address was The Street, Blundeston. By 1911 they were living near The Plough, Blundeston, and Cornelius was a gardener. 

Harold Gooch

A Sapper with 560 Field Company, Harold died on 24th of November 1942 aged 24. 

Harold was born at Lowestoft on 19 November 1918, a son of Ewart William and Lily Maud Gooch. In 1921 his family lived at 93 Raglan Street, and this was still their home in 1939, when Harold was a fruit salesman.  

George Harold Albert Gooch

A Sergeant with the Army Catering Corps, attached to the 4th Battalion Suffolk Regiment, George died on 14th of August 1943 at the age of 24. 

George was born at Gisleham on 1 May 1919, a son of Albert Alfred and Ethel Agnes Gooch. he was baptised at Saint John's Church, Lowestoft, on 23 May 1919 and his family lived at Church Farm Cottages, Gisleham. 

George's father died in 1930 and his mother remarried and in 1939 she lived at 153 The Avenue, Lowestoft.

George married Hilda Maud Rivett in 1940, this registered in the Bury St. Edmunds district. 

Garnett Arthur Cumberland Goodall

A Second Lieutenant with 4th Battalion (Territorial) Suffolk Regiment, Garnett died on 20th of July 1916 at the age of 24. 

Garnett was born at Sydenham, Surrey, in 1892, a son of Arthur Hammond and Frances Marieanne Goodall. In 1901 his family lived at 13 Kirkstall Road, Streatham. By 19016 they were living at Lees Farm, Oulton Broad. Garnett was baptised at Saint Peter's Church, Carlton Colville, on 4 April 1906, aged 14. In 1911 his family lived at The Dell, Oulton Broad, and Garnett was a general engineer working for Brookes. 

James Henry Gouldby

James Henry Gouldby

A Second Lieutenant with 5th Battalion (Territorial) attached 7th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, James died on 25th of August 1918 at the age of 24. 

James was born at Lowestoft in 1891, a son of William and Helena Clara Gouldby. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 21 April 1895 and his family lived at 239 Raglan Street. In 1901 they lived at 67 Raglan Street. By 1911 they were living at 133 Clapham Road and James was an assistant in his father's business as a Hay and Corn Merchant. 

James served with the 1/1st Suffolk Yeomanry. 

Lewis Last Green

A Private with 1st Bn., Lewis died on 30th of January 1915 at the age of 24. 

Lewis was born at Lowestoft on 3 November 1891, a son of Lewis Last Green and Harriett Green. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 2 December 1891, and his family lived at 38 Stanford Street. In 1901 his family lived at 129 Wollaston Road. Lewis attended the British School, Lowestoft, and from 16 September 1901 was a pupil at Saint Margaret's School, Lowestoft. His mother died in 1906 and his father remarried and the family lived at 18 Stanford Street, Lowestoft.

William Arkle Grimble

A Seaman with H.M. Yacht Goissa, William died on 25th of April 1916 at the age of 24. 

William was born at Mutford on 2 August 1891, a son of William and Ann Isabella Grimble. He was baptised at Saint Andrew's Church, Mutford, on 6 September 1891 and his family lived at Mutford. By 1901 his family were living at Francis Terrace, Carlton Road, Pakefield, and by 1915 they were living at 59 Kimberley Road, Lowestoft. Later his parents lived at 9 Saint Leaonard's Road, Lowestoft.

Beatrice May Harvey

A Civilian, Beatrice died on 22nd of July 1941 at the age of 24.

Beatrice was born at Lowestoft on 23 May 1917, a daughter of Eleanor Gertrude Redgrave, and twin sister of Lily May Redgrave. In 1921 her family lived at 26 Saint Leonards Road, Lowestoft. In 1939 she was still living with her family at 26 Saint Leonards Road and she was an unemployed beatster. 

Beatrice married Frederick Leonard Harvey, a Leading Seaman in the Royal Naval Reserve, at Lowestoft, in 1940. They lived at 12 Saint Leonards Road, Lowestoft. 

Michael Daniel Holland

A Deck Hand with H.M. Trawler Waltham, Michael died on 10th of October 1917 at the age of 24. 

Michael was born at Lowestoft on 25 July 1893, a son of Michael and Caroline Holland. In 1901 his family lived at 35 Lorne Park Road, Kirkley. 

Reginald Charles Howlett

A Private with 4th Bn. Reginald died on 10th of November 1943 at the age of 24. 

Reginald was born at Lowestoft on 3 November 1920: the son of Louise Harriet Bunn, nee Howlett. He was baptised at Saint Peter's Church, Kirkley, on 2 September 1921, and his mother lived at 34 Lorne Road. Later his family lived at 88 Rotterdam Road, Lowestoft. 

Bertie Richard Hubbard

A Private with the 11th Battalion, Bertie died on 15th of April 1918 at the age of 24. 

Bertie was born at Lowestoft on 25 October 1894, a son of Frederick William and Eliza (Edith) Hubbard. On 31 May 1899 he became a pupil at Kirkley School, and his family lived at Clement Square. In 1901 his family lived at 3 Ontario Road and in 1911 they lived at 7 Church Street, Pakefield, and Bertie worked as an errand boy for a beer retailer. Later his parents lived at 21 Southwell Road. 

William Thomas Robert Hunter

A Sergeant with the Royal Air Force, William died on 1st of July 1944 aged 24. 

William was born at Lowestoft on 20 May 1920, a son of William James and Margaret (May) Hunter. He was baptised at Saint John's Church, Lowestoft, on 18 June 1920. His family lived at 61 Lawson Road, Lowestoft. William's parents died in the 1920s and it seems that William, and his siblings, were then cared for by their grandparents William Thomas and Laura L. Hunter. In 1939 the family home was at 40 Lawson Road, Lowestoft. 

John Charles Beckett Kent

A Private with the 7th Battalion, John died on 12th of October 1916 at the age of 24. 

Hugh Knights

A Private with the 1st Battalion, Hugh died on 23rd of October 1944 aged 24. 

Hugh was born at Chillesford, Suffolk, on 20 September 1920, a son of Harry and Elizabeth Knights. In 1921 his family lived at The Street, Chillisford. By 1939 their address was ‘Rear of the Fire Station’, Saint Peter’s Street, Lowestoft, and Hugh was an assistant at a hardware store.

Herbert Henry Lambert

A Rifleman with 9th Bn., Herbert died on 25th of September 1915 at the age of 24. 

Herbert was born at Lowestoft in 1891, a son of Herbert John Arthur and Fanny Lucy Lambert. In 1901 his family lived at 49 Mariners Street, Lowestoft. By 1911 they were living at 1 Compass Street, Lowestoft, and Herbert assisted in his father's carting business. 

Herbert served with D Squadron of the Suffolk Yeomanry for five years.

Alfred Leech

A Private with 1/10th Bn., Alfred died on 2nd of November 1917 at the age of 24. 

Alfred was born at Lowestoft in 1893, a son of Charles and Elizabeth (Lily) Leech. In 1901 his family lived at 30 Edinburgh Road, Lowestoft, and by 1911 at 10 Osborne Street, Lowestoft, and Alfred worked as a clothier. 

Alfred was living at Stoke Newington when he enlisted in the Army at Hackney. He joined the 10th London Regiment, service number 4055. He was posted to the 1/10th Battalion and arrived in Egypt on 13 July 1916 to join the Battalion. 

Reginald Arthur Lord

A Private with 4th Bn., Reginald died on 15th of February 1942 at the age of 24. 

Reginald was born at Lowestoft on 20 November 1917 a son of Reginald and Ella May Lord. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, on 19 February 1918. At that time his father was in the Army and the family home was at 24 May Road. In 1934 Reginald became a postman-messenger for the Post Office at Lowestoft. 

In 1939 Reginald married Kathleen Gertrude Pennell at Lowestoft. Their home was at 33 Cleveland Road, Lowestoft. 

Frederick Michael Mann

A Private with 7th Bn. Frederick died on 4th of November 1918 at the age of 24. 

Frederick was born at Aldeburgh in 1894, a son of John Edward and Mary Ann Mann. He was baptised at Saints Peter and Paul Church, Aldeburgh, on 16 March 1894. In 1901 his family lived at Portland House, High Street, Aldeburgh, and his father was an Inspector of Police. By 1911 his family were living at The Police Station, Bridge Street, Framlingham, where his father was the Police Superintendent and Frederick worked as an ironmonger's assistant. Later his family lived at 35 Beresford Road, Lowestoft. 

James Mark

A Private with the 10th Battalion, James died on 30th of September 1944 aged 24. 

James was born at Brampton, Cumberland, in 1920, a son of John Joseph and Agnes Mark. In 1939 his family lived at High Boothby, Brampton.

In 1943 James married Barbara Doreen Capps, of 27 Jacob's Street, at Lowestoft. Barbara remarried in 1962. 
James enlisted in the Border Regiment and was later transferred to the 10th Battalion Highland Light Infantry. The 10th Battalion landed at Normandy on 18 June 1944. 

Maurice Alfred Miller

A Lance Corporal with the 1/5th Battalion, Maurice died on 16th of August 1917 at the age of 24. 

Maurice was born at Upper Norwood, London, on 24 April 1893, a son of Alfred James and Alice Ann Miller. In 1901 his family lived at 21 Ipswich Road, Lowestoft. Maurice was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 24 April 1908, and his family lived at Trafalgar House, Milton Road. Later his family lived at 17 Old Nelson Street, Lowestoft. In 1911 Maurice lived, and worked, at 204 Norwood Road, West Norwood, and he worked as a draper’s assistant.  

Arthur James Newrick

A Private with the 2nd Battalion, Arthur died on 27th of September 1918 at the age of 24. 

Arthur was born at Gisleham on 25 September 1894, a son of Arthur and Mary Ann Newrick. He was baptised at Mutford on 11 November 1894. In 1901 his family lived at The Street, Mutford. By 1911 they were living at Mill Road, Mutford, and Arthur was a miller’s carter.

Arthur volunteered and enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft. He joined the Suffolk Regiment, service number 15447, and on 26 January 1915 arrived in France to join the 2nd Battalion.  

William Newrick

A Private with the 2nd Battalion, William died on 18th of February 1917 at the age of 24. 

William was born at Lowestoft on 16 June 1893, a son of John and Mary Ann Newrick. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 4 July 1893, and his family lived at 15 Saint Margaret’s Plain. By 1901 his family were living at Potts Cottages, Oulton Road, and by 1911 at 3 College Cottages, Oulton Road, and William worked as a domestic gardener. 

Philip Norris Palmer

A Private with the 9th Battalion, Philip died on 16th of September 1916 at the age of 25. 

Philip was born at Lowestoft on 27 February 1892, a son of Philip Norris and Sarah Elizabeth Palmer. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 27 March 1892, and his family lived at 48 Haward Street. In 1901 his family lived at Barrett’s Buildings, Albert Street. In 1911 they lived at 3 Albany Road and Philip was a tram conductor working for Lowestoft Corporation.    

Charles Edward Parker

A Private with the 7th Battalion, Charles died on 27th of March 1918 at the age of 24. 

Arthur William Pearman

Arthur William Pearman

A Private with the 2/7th Battalion, Arthur died on 29th of July 1916 at the age of 24. 

Arthur was born at Ashby in 1892, a son of Arthur and Eliza Pearman. In 1901 his family lived at The Dell, Ashby, and this was still their home in 1911, when Arthur was an accountant’s clerk. 

Arthur attended Somerleyton School and, on 18 September 1906, became a student at Lowestoft School of Science. He was a member of the Somerleyton Methodist Union. 

Montague Pearson

A Joiner 5th Class with H.M.S. Thracian, Montague died on 12th of October 1942 at the age of 24. 

Montague was born at Blundeston on 6 June 1918, a son of David Samuel and Alberta Clara Pearson. In 1921 his family lived at The Street, Blundeston. By 1939 Montague’s father had died and Montague lived with his mother at the Street, Blundeston, and Montague worked as a woodworker at Eastern Coach Works. 

ERNEST EDWARD POPE

Ernest Edward Pope

A Lance Sergeant with the 14th Battalion, Ernest died on 13th of October 1918 aged 24. 

Ernest was born at Lowestoft in 1894, a son of Henry and Phoebe Pope. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 31 August 1894 and his family lived at 59 Edinburgh Road and this was still their home in 1901. Later his family lived at 57 Saint Margaret’s Road. In 1911 Ernest worked on the trawler Ocean’s Gift, LT 387, at Newlyn.   

Mark Alfred Raven

A Sergeant with 51st Battalion. Mark died on 21st of March 1918 at the age of 24. 

Mark was born at Mutford on 22 June 1893, a son of Alfred and Louisa Raven. He was baptised at Mutford on 20 August 1893. By 1901 has family were living at Beccles Road, Mutford. 

Mark enlisted in the Army at Lowestoft and initially served with the Suffolk Regiment with service number 14361.

Lily May Redgrave

A Civilian, Lily died on 22nd of July 1941 at the age of 24. 

Lily was born at Lowestoft on 23 May 1917, a daughter of Eleanor Gertrude Redgrave, and twin sister of Beatrice May Redgrave (later Harvey). In 1921 her family lived at 26 Saint Leonards Road, Lowestoft, and this was her home for the rest of her life. In 1939 she worked as a food packer at the Co-op Wholesale Society (C.W.S.) canning factory on Waveney Drive. 

Lily, along with her mother, and sister Beatrice Harvey, died at 26 Saint Leonards Road, Lowestoft, during an air raid. 

John Reynolds

A Driver with A/16 Brigade, John died on 31st of March 1918 at the age of 24. 

John was born at Oulton in 1894, a son of John and Mary Ann Reynolds. In 1901 his family lived at 271 Raglan Street, and this was till their home in 1911. By 1911 John was working as a fisherman and worked with his father who was the Skipper of the fishing trawler Crystal. Later his family lived at 29 Haward Street, Lowestoft.

John volunteered and enlisted at Lowestoft. He joined the Royal Horse Artillery and went to France on 13 March 1915.

George Thomas Robinson

A Sergeant with the 2nd Battalion, George died on 3rd of August 1944 aged 24. 

George was born at Snettisham, Norfolk, in 1920, a son of George Thomas and Flora Robinson. In 1921 his family lived at Station Road, Snettisham, and this was still their home in 1939. In early 1944 George married Betty Lilian Pratt, this was registered in the Lothingland district. Betty’s family lived at 634 London Road.

Phillip Henry Savage

A Flight Sergeant with the Royal Air Force, Phillip died on 25th of February 1944 aged 24. 

Phillip was born at the Isle of Wight in 1920, a son of Sidney Phillip and Evelyn Beatrice Savage. Phillip’s father died in 1926 and, by 1939, his mother was living at 25 West Road, Caister-on-Sea. Phillip’s uncle, Herbert James Savage, lived at White House Farm, Victoria Road, Oulton Broad.

Clement Freeman Sendall

A Corporal with the 2nd Battalion, Clement died on 25th of March 1918 at the age of 24. 

Clement was born at Lowestoft on 24 November 1893, a son of Clement Frederick and Celia Emily Sendall, and his family lived at 62 Cambridge Road. He was baptised at Christ Church on 8 April 1894. In 1901 his family lived at 47 Mariners Street. By 1911 they were living at 14 Ipswich Road, and Clement was a grocer’s apprentice. Later his parents lived at Park Estate, Oulton Broad.

Arthur William Maurice Sewell

Arthur William Maurice Sewell

A Leading Seaman, Arthur died on 30th January 1943 aged 24.

Arthur was born at Lowestoft in 1919, a son of Arthur George and Ada P. Sewell. In 1921 his family lived at 44 Beaconsfield Road, Lowestoft. By 1939 his family lived at Wrights Cottages, High Street, Kessingland.

In January 1943 Arthur was serving with the corvette H.M.S. Samphire. On 30 January 1943 the Samphire was escorting convoy TE-14 as part of the North Africa campaign. When off Bougie, Algeria, the ship was torpedoed and sunk by the Italian submarine Platino with the loss of 44 lives. 

William Shepherd

A Gunner, William died on 25th of July 1921 at the age of 24. 

William was born at Lowestoft in 1897, a son of John Charles and Florence Ellen Shepherd. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 5 November 1897 and his family lived at 8 Hervey Street. By 1901 they were living at 17 Beresford Road, and in 1911 they lived at 19 Royal Avenue.

William was a priest of the Church of the Latter Day Saints.

Kenneth Sidney Shreeve

A Sergeant with the Royal Air Force, Kenneth died on 31st of May 1945 aged 23. 

Kenneth was born at Lowestoft on 3 December 1921, a son of Benjamin Roberts and Mabel Kezia Shreeve. He was baptised at Saint John’s Church on 5 March 1922 and his family lived at 37 - 38 Marine Parade and this was still their home in 1939.

Kenneth was a motor transport driver. By May 1945 he was serving with 22 Service Flying Training School in Rhodesia. On 31 May he was driving a tractor unit which overturned at a railway crossing at Cwal Umvanu Road, Gwelo, killing Kenneth. 

Arthur John Skoulding

A Private with 1st Bn. Arthur died on 4th of May 1917 at the age of 24. 

Arthur was born at Oulton Broad on 20 December 1892, a son of Robert and Martha Skoulding. He was baptised at Saint Peter's Church, Carlton Colville, on 14 May 1893. In 1901 his family lived at The Gate House, Carlton Colville. By 1911 Arthur's father had died and his family were living at Coldstream Villas, Dell Road, Oulton Broad. 

Victor Frederick Snowling

A Petty Officer Steward with H.M.S. Fratton., Victor died on 18th of August 1944 at the age of 24. 

Victor was born at Lowestoft on 30 January 1920, a son of Ernest Victor and Rose Lilian Snowling. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church on 22 February 1920 and his family lived at 51 Sussex Road. By 1939 they were living at 32 Kent Road, Lowestoft, and Victor worked as a commercial vehicle builder.

Charles Napier Solomon

A Private with Eastern Command, Charles died on 16th of June 1918 at the age of 24.

Charles was born at Carlton Colville on 13 October 1893. A son of Charles Napier and Naomi Solomon. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Carlton Colville, on 21 January 1894. In 1901 his family lived ‘near The Ship Inn’, Carlton Colville. In 1911 Charles lodged at Sycamore Avenue, Oulton Broad, with his sister Gertrude Bunn, and family, and Charles worked as a labourer.
