William Thomas Robert Hunter

A Sergeant with the Royal Air Force, William died on 1st of July 1944 aged 24. 

William was born at Lowestoft on 20 May 1920, a son of William James and Margaret (May) Hunter. He was baptised at Saint John's Church, Lowestoft, on 18 June 1920. His family lived at 61 Lawson Road, Lowestoft. William's parents died in the 1920s and it seems that William, and his siblings, were then cared for by their grandparents William Thomas and Laura L. Hunter. In 1939 the family home was at 40 Lawson Road, Lowestoft.

Hylton Daniel Ellis

A Sergeant with the Royal Air Force, Hylton died on 9th of December 1940 at the age of 26. 

Son of Hylton Charles and Agnes Harriet Ellis of 74 Sycamore Avenue Lowestoft. 

Hylton's widow, Alice, married his brother Richard who also died while serving with the RAF. Alice lived at Dinnington Colliery.  

1st Aircraft Supply Depot

Thomas Tracey Aldous

A Sergeant with 1st Aircraft Supply Depot, Thomas died on 23rd of September 1918 aged 27. 

Thomas was born at Hulver, Suffolk, in 1891, a son of John and Emily Aldous. In 1901 his family lived at The Police Station, Earl Soham, where his father was a Police Sergeant. In 1911 his family lived at Albert Road, Framlingham, and Thomas was a carpenter’s apprentice. Later his family lived at Church Road, Kessingland.

22 Service Flying Training School

Kenneth Sidney Shreeve

A Sergeant with the Royal Air Force, Kenneth died on 31st of May 1945 aged 23. 

Kenneth was born at Lowestoft on 3 December 1921, a son of Benjamin Roberts and Mabel Kezia Shreeve. He was baptised at Saint John’s Church on 5 March 1922 and his family lived at 37 - 38 Marine Parade and this was still their home in 1939.

Kenneth was a motor transport driver. By May 1945 he was serving with 22 Service Flying Training School in Rhodesia. On 31 May he was driving a tractor unit which overturned at a railway crossing at Cwal Umvanu Road, Gwelo, killing Kenneth.

John Shaw Willis

A Flight Sergeant with the Royal Air Force, John died on 22nd of June 1941 aged 25. 

John was born at Colchester in 1916, a son of John Albert and Ellen Willis. In 1939 his family lived at Hilldora, Elmstead Road, Colchester.

John was a senior clerk in the Colchester offices of the Pearl Assurance Company and volunteered for service with the Royal Air Force in 1938.

John married Margaret Hide Breach, of 263 Whapload Road, Lowestoft, in 1939, this was registered in the Ploughley district of Oxfordshire.

James Richard Gowen

James Richard Gowen

A Corporal with the Royal Air Force, James died on 7th of April 1942 aged 20. 

James was born at Lowestoft in 1922, a son of James Edward and Violet Emma Gowen. In 1939 his family lived at 49 Poplar Road, Carlton Colville. 

James enlisted in the Royal Air Force as an aircraft apprentice.

William Henry Dye

An Aircraftman 2nd Class with the Royal Air Force, William died on 5th of November 1939 aged 19.  

William was born at Caister-on-Sea, Norfolk, in 1920, a son of William Youngs Alice Dye. In 1921 his family lived at Ruthens Loke, Caister-on-Sea. By 1939 his family were living at 266 Saint Peter’s Street, Lowestoft, where his father had a shop.

William served with 38 Squadron. He was on board a Wellington bomber that was transporting ground staff personnel from R.A.F. Marham to Barton Bendish. 

55 Squadron

Ronald Henry Claxton

A Sergeant with the Royal Air Force, Ronald died on 12th of May 1940 aged 24. 

Ronald was born at Lowestoft on 4 June 1915, a son of Thomas and Jessie Claxton. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 22 June 1915 and his family lived at 17 Avondale Road and this was still their home in 1921. By 1939 they were living at 42 Rotterdam Road.  

Ronald was a Pilot with 55 Squadron. He was flying a Blenheim I aircraft, L8386, on a night exercise training flight when the aircraft flew into high ground sixty miles east of Ismailia, Egypt. There was one survivor.

William Thomas Jack Hart

A Corporal with 8 Squadron, William died on 24th of September 1942 at the age of 22. 

William was born at Lowestoft on 12 July 1920, a son of William and Alice Eliza Hart of Lowestoft Suffolk England. Throughout William’s life his family lived at 17 Park Road. 

William served with No 8 Squadron, based at Khormaksar, Aden. The role of 8 Squadron was to fly bombing missions against the Italian forces in Eritrea and Somaliland.

Leslie Feldon Finch

A Corporal with the Royal Air Force, Leslie died on 9th of June 1940 at the age of 20. 

Leslie was born at Lowestoft on 16 December 1919, a son of Edward John and Emma Feldon Finch. he was baptised at Saint John's Church, Lowestoft, on 23 January 1920. His family lived at the Lloyd's Bank building where Leslie's father was the caretaker. In 1939 Leslie's widowed mother, and his sister, lived at 41 Bevan Street, Lowestoft. 

97 Squadron

Archibald James Dexter

A Sergeant with the Royal Air Force, Archibald died on 28th of October 1918 aged 20. 

Archibald was born at Lowestoft in 1898, a son of Albert Edward and Isabella Dexter. He was baptised at Saint John's Church, on 1 April 1898 and at that time his family lived at 39 Stanley Street and this was still their address in 1901. By 1911 the family were living at 12 Gordon Road. Subsequently they would live at 105 Clapham Road.

Alfred John Cannell

A Flight Sergeant with the Royal Air Force, Alfred died on 23rd of June 1941 at the age of 26. 

Alfred was born at Lowestoft on 28 August 1914, a son of John William and Elizabeth Cannell. He was baptised at Saint Peter’s Church, Kirkley, on 23 September 1914 and his family lived at 46 Acton Road. In 1921 his family lived at Becks Green, South Street, Ilketshall Saint Andrews. 

In 1938 Alfred married Helen M. Smith, this was registered in the Lothingland district. By 1939 Alfred’s family, and Helen, lived at 44 Acton Road.  

No 1 School of Technical Training

William Gerald Powell

An Aircraft Apprentice with No 1 School of Technical Training, William died on 10th of August 1941 at the age of 18. 

William was born at Lowestoft on 16 January 1923, a son of William Henry and Georgina Honor Powell. In 1939 his family lived at 32 Seago Street, and William worked as an assistant to a coach body maker. He was also an A.R.P. messenger at his works.

William was under training with No 1 Wing, No 1 School of Technical Training and was killed whilst at home on leave. CREDIT:Malcolm Barrass

John Thomas Flower

An Air Mechanic 3rd Class with the Reserve Depot, John died on 25th of May 1918 at the age of 35. 

John was born at Lowestoft on 11 August 1882, a son of John Matthias and Mary Ann Flower. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 1 September 1882. In 1891 his family lived at 7 Southwell Road and by 1901 at 32 Southwell Road and John was a house painter.
