William Henry Baster

A Chief Petty Officer with H.M.S. Ark Royal, William died on 4th of September 1918 aged 49. 

William was born at Gravesend, Kent, on 25 November 1868, a son of George Frederick and Mary Anne Baster. He was baptised at Holy Trinity Church, Milton-next-Gravesend, on 6 January 1869. In 1871 his family lived at Clarence Street, Milton. By 1881 they had moved to Mundesley, Norfolk, where his father was a Coast Guard. 

Henry John Blowers

A Deck Hand with H.M. Trawler Tettenhall, Henry John died on 23rd of May 1917 at the age of 49. 

Henry was born at Heigham, Norwich on 3 December 1867, a son of Benjamin and Maria Blowers. In 1871 his family lived at 5 Laundry Lane, Lowestoft, and in 1881 their address was 75 Laundry Road, Lowestoft. 

John Day

A Second Hand with H.M. Drifter Beatrice, John died on 27th of September 1919 at the age of 49. 

John was born at Whitton, Ipswich on 9 September 1869, a son of William and Mary Ann Day. In 1871 his family lived at Henly Road, Whitton. By 1891 John was living with his widowed mother at 23 Great Wingfield Street, Ipswich, and John was a brewer's labourer.    

On 19 January 1892 John married Sarah Hannah Meadows at Saint Margaret's Church, Lowestoft, John was a smacksman and they both lived at 5 Burton Place, The Beach, Lowestoft. 

Walter George Day

A Leading Deck Hand with H.M. Trawler Thomas Crofton I. Walter died on 17th of November 1917 at the age of 49. 

Walter was born at Walthamstow on 31 January 1868, a son of Walter George and Emma Day. In 1871 his family lived at Shernhall Street, Walthamstow. 

Walter married Annie Jane Tucker at Christchurch, Lowestoft, on 10 March 1892. Walter was a fisherman, and they both lived at Whapload Road. By 1896 they were living at 4 Colville Road. 

Robert Maddis

A Deck Hand with H.M. Trawler Territorial. Robert died on 27th of October 1917 at the age of 49. 

Robert was born at Beccles on 14 March 1868, a son of Robert and Mary Maddis. Some sources suggest that he was born at Mutford on 20 May 1875, but these are not corroborated, and Robert appears in the 1871 Census living with his family at Ingate Road, Beccles. Note that his surname is variously given as Maddis and Maddiss. 

Sydney Alfred Roach

A Civilian, Sydney died on 10th of August 1941 at the age of 49. 

Sydney was born at Lowestoft on 12 March 1892, a son of James and Martha Ashley Roach. Sydney's family lived at 71 Wollaston Road. In 1911 Sydney was employed as a domestic groom.

Sydney was working as a groom, for Lilian Boswell at Tudor Lodge, Lowestoft, when he volunteered to join the Army. He attested and joined the Suffolk Regiment, at Lowestoft, on 9 September 1914, number 12648. He was posted to the 9th Battalion and served in France from 30 August 1915. 

William Sabberton

A Trimmer with H.M. Trawler Speeton., William died on 31st of December 1915 at the age of 49. 

William was born at Lowestoft on 9 April 1866, a son of (Samuel) Richard and Mary Ann Sabberton. In 1871 his family lived at 22 Clemence Street. By 1881 they were living at 34 Stevens Street and William worked as a mariner. He was a brother of Mrs. Mary Tarrell of 45 Stanley Street Lowestoft. 

George Edward Shiplee

A Second Hand, George died on 23rd February 1916 at the age of 49.

George was born at Southwold. He was baptised at Saint Edmund's Church, Southwold, on 4 March 1866, a son of George and Mary Shiplee. In 1871 his family lived at North Green, Southwold, and by 1881 were living at Southwold Road, Wrentham. 

George became a fisherman. 

Ernest Harper Smith

A Skipper with Steam Trawler Carry On (Lowestoft), Ernest died on 17th of December 1940 aged 49. 

Ernest was born at Gillingham, Norfolk, on 25 November 1891, a son of James Pye Smith and Ellen Smith. In 1901 his family lived at Frances Terrace, Carlton Road, Carlton Colville. By 1911 his were living at 26 Lovewell Road, Kirkley, and by 1915 their home was at 10 Lawson Road.  

In January 1914 Ernest was awarded his certificate of competency as a Skipper.
