Arthur was born at Lowestoft in 1876, a son of Arthur Nathaniel and Emma E. Balls. In 1881 his family lived at 46 Crown Street, Lowestoft. By 1891 they were living at 62 Queens Road and Arthur was an apprentice twine (rope) spinner. In 1901 they were living at 29 Cambridge Road and Arthur worked as a fisherman and this was still their address in 1911 and Arthur still worked as a fisherman. Later his parents lived at 70 Ipswich Road, Lowestoft.

Albert Edward Barnard
A Private with 717th Mechanical Transport Company. Albert died on 30th of September 1917 at the age of 40.
Albert was born at Lowestoft on 19 October 1876, a son of Arthur and Lucy Barnard. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 3 December 1876. In 1881 his family lived at 10 Summer Road and by 1891 they were living at 21 Saint John’s Road and Albert was a refreshment room assistant.
In 1901 Albert worked as a groom at The Stables, The Severals, Newmarket.

James Walter Barnard
A Private with the Army Service Corps, James died on 6th of November 1918 aged 40.
James was born at Lowestoft in 1878, a son of Samuel and Charlotte Barnard. In 1881 his family lived at 9 Colville Road, Kirkley. The 1891 Census appears to show James with his aunt and uncle, Jane and William Williams, at 20 Arnold Street. By 1901 he was living with his parents at 8 Beckham Road and working as a carter.

James William Beavers
A Private with the 6th Battalion, James died on 14 February 1917 at the age of 40.
James was born at Lowestoft on 10 October 1877, a son of James William and Jane Hannah Beavers (note his mother’s name is also given as Jane Eliza on some records). In 1881 his family lived at 31 East Street, Lowestoft.
He was baptised at Christchurch, Lowestoft, on 4 November 1877.
James married Margaret Jane Johnson at Saint Mary’s Church, Edge Hill, Liverpool, on 10 April 1898. At that time he was a labourer living at Wrayburn Street.

Henry Ernest Brady
Henry was born at Lowestoft on 11 February 1905, a son of Samuel George and Lucy Ann Brady. In 1911 his family lived at 1 Bishop’s Buildings, Mariners Street, and later at 21 Chapel Street. In 1921 his family lived at 94 Seago Street.
On 5 September 1931 Henry married Florence Kathleen Saunder at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft. Henry was a barman living at 94 Seago Street and Florence lived at 43 Norwich Road. In 1939 they lived at 94 Seago Street and Herny was a casual Post Office worker. Later Florence lived at 5 Payne Street.

Agnes Victoria Jane Bullard
A Civilian, Agnes died on 13th of January 1942 aged 40.
Agnes was born at Lowestoft on 6 October 1901, a daughter of William Thomas and Agnes Amelia Carsey. She was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 5 January 1902 and her family lived at 133 Wollaston Road.

Arthur Cable
A Private with the Depot, Arthur died on 4th of December 1916 at the age of 40.
Arthur was born at Heckingham, Norfolk, in 1876, a son of Rebecca Cable. In 1881 his family lived at Thurlton, Norfolk. For a time in 1886 Arthur and his mother were living at Heckingham Workhouse and Arthur was still there in 1891. By 1896 he had moved to Lowestoft and it seems that whenever he lived in Lowestoft he stayed with his sister Emma Swatman. By 1911 Emma was living at 131 Raglan Street.

Frederick Ernest Catchpole
A Chief Engineer with Fishing Vessel Aberdeen LT123 (Lowestoft). Frederick died on 11th of March 1941 at the age of 40.
Frederick was born at Kessingland on 29 July 1900, a son of Thomas and Rose Elizabeth Catchpole. In 1901 his family lived at Zulu Cottages, Kessingland. By 1911 they were living at 2 Saint Margaret's Terrace, Church Street, Pakefield, and later at 45 Saint Margaret's Road, Pakefield.
Frederick married Emma Phoebe Martha Watson in 1924. In 1939 they were living at Florio, Long Road, Pakefield, and Frederick was a trawler engineer.
Frank William Catchpole
A Chief Engineer with Steam Trawler Lord Haldane (Lowestoft), Frank died on 7th of November 1940 aged 40.
Frank was born at Lowestoft on 9 October 1900, a son of George Hicham and Beatrice Catchpole. In 1901 his family lived at 15 Lorne Road and by 1911 they lived at 10 John Street.
In 1921 Frank was a stoker with the trawler Nelson, LT516.

Walter Robert Chilvers
A Sergeant with 1st Bn. Walter died on 24th of August 1914 at the age of 40.
Walter was born at Kirkley in 1874, a son of Eliza Chilvers. He was baptised at Saint Peter's Church, Kirkley, on 18 March 1875. In 1881 his family lived at 25 Southwell Place, Lowestoft, and by 1891 at Elizabeth Cottage, Southwell Road, and Walter worked as a grocery storekeeper. Later his mother lived at 55 Southwell Road, Lowestoft.
Walter enlisted in the Army at Norwich in 1896. He joined the Norfolk Regiment.

Harry Thomas Chipperfield
A Gunner with 14th Heavy Artillery Group, Harry died on 12th of April 1917 at the age of 40.
Harry was born at Oulton Broad on 15 December 1876, a son of Charles Thomas and Mary Elizabeth Chipperfield. He was baptised at Saint Michael’s Church, Oulton, on 10 June 1877. In 1881 his family lived at Mutford Bridge, Oulton. By 1891 they lived at 6 Beccles Road, Oulton, and Harry was a butcher’s assistant working with his father. In 1901 they lived at the Butcher’s Shop, Cambridge House, Bridge Road, Oulton. Harry’s father died in 1911 and later his mother moved to Streatham, London.

George Arthur Church
A Third Hand with Trawler Queen of Devon (Lowestoft), George died on 20th of December 1914 at the age of 40.
George was born at Carlton Colville in 1874, a son of George and Harriet Church. In 1881 his family lived at Cambridge Road, Lowestoft.

Edward Donald Clarke
A Lance Sergeant with H.M.S. Proserpine, Edward died on 6th of December 1944 aged 40.
Edward was born at Lowestoft on 28 April 1904, a son of Arthur Edward and Harriet Jane Clarke. He was baptised at Saint John’s Church on 20 May 1904 and his family lived at Edward House, Stanford Street. In 1911 his family lived at Stanford House, 47 Stanford Street.
In 1926 Edward worked as an Assistant Steward with the Merchant Navy on S.S. Orvieto.

Frederick Clarke
A Private with the 18th Battalion, Fred died on 24th of September 1918 at the aged 40.
Frederick, often known as Fred, was born at Lowestoft on 3 July 1878, a son of Charles and Charlotte (Lottie) Clarke. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church on 6 October 1878. In 1881 his family lived at 22 Saint Peter’s Street and in 1891 they lived at 309 Raglan Street, and in 1901 at 7 Jacob’s Street, and Fred was a housepainter.

John Edward Cook
A Mate with Sailing Trawler Young Bert (Lowestoft), John died on 30th of July 1917 aged 40.
John was born at Lowestoft in 1877, a son of John Edward and Harriet J. Cook. In 1881 his family lived at 17 Seago Street and by 1891 they were living at 65 Roman Road.
On 21 March 1905 John married Alice Kate Hales at Saint Margaret’s Church. John was a fisherman and they both gave their address as 2 Norwich Road. In 1911 they lived at 83 Rotterdam Road and John was a fisherman.

Reginald Edward Cook
An Able Seaman with H.M.M.B. Cervantes, Reginald died on 3rd of November 1942 at the age of 40.
Reginald was born at Lowestoft on 27 April 1902, a son of Charles and Mina Cook. In 1911 his family lived at 44 Acton Road.
On 26 December 1927 Reginald married Louisa Durrant at Saint Peter’s Church, Kirkley. Reginald was a fisherman and they both lived at Kirkley. By 1939 they were living at 80 Lowestoft Road, Carlton Colville, and Reginald was a timber labourer.
Reginald was accidentally drowned in the River Swale, near Elmley Ferry.

James Alfred Culham
A Leading Seaman with the Royal Naval Reserve, James died on 8th of September 1940 at the age of 40.
James was born at Lowestoft on 11 September 1899, a son of James Alfred and Georgina Culham. He was baptised at Saint Margaret's Church on 15 March 1903 (the same day as his brother Walter) and his family lived at 65 Seago Street and this was still their address in 1911 and 1921.

Henry Joseph Laws Curtis
A Regimental Sergeant Major with the Inland Water Transport, Henry died on 25th of May 1921 at the age of 40.
Henry was born at Great Yarmouth in 1881, a son of Henry Joseph and Mary Ann Collett Curtis. In 1881 his family lived at 17 Blackfriars Road, Great Yarmouth. By 1891 they were living at 3 Regent Road, Lowestoft, and by 1901 they were living at 28 Regent Road.
On 27 October 1899 Henry was awarded his certificate of competency as a Second Mate of a Foreign-going Ship.

Ernest Dann
A Private with the 2nd Battalion, Ernest died on 16th of December 1914 at the age of 40.
Ernest was born at Aldeby, Norfolk, in 1874, a son of George and Eliza Dann. In 1881 his family lived at Waterheath Cottage, Aldeby, near Loddon. By 1891 his mother had died, his father remarried, and the family had moved to Lowestoft, living at Stanley Cottages, 2 Carlton Road, and Ernest was a house painter.

Edward Henry Barnabas Dunnett
A Corporal with the 12th Battalion, Edward died on 18th of July 1917 at the age of 40.
Edward was born at Lowestoft on 25 April 1877, a son of James and Sarah Dunnett. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Lowestoft, on 3 June 1877. In 1881 his family lived at Wicks Court, Saint Peter’s Street. Edward attended Arnold Street School and, on 22 February 1886, became a pupil at Saint Margaret’s School. At this time his family lived at Chapel Street and by 1891 they were living at 12 Oxford Road.

Lewis Eade
Skipper with Steam Trawler Incentive (Lowestoft), Lewis died on 28th of May 1915, at the age of 40.
Lewis was born at Blythburgh in 1874, a son of Samuel and Hannah Eade. In 1881 his family lived at Blythburgh.

Robert Charles Grimble
A Driver with 1 Company, 32nd Divisional Train, Robert died on 11th of August 1918 at the age of 40.
Robert was born at Kirkley in 1878, a son of Alfred and Emma Grimble. He was baptised at Saint Peter's Church, Kirkley, on 28 April 1878. By 1881 his father had died and his family lived at 1 Waterworks Lane, Kirkley.
On 15 September 1900 Robert married Esther Sarah Smith at Beccles Parish Church. They lived at 5 Waterworks Lane before moving to 2 Flora Terrace, Flora Road, off Carlton Road, Pakefield.

Robert Hart
A Third Hand with the trawler Willing Boys (Lowestoft), Robert died on 2nd October 1917 at the age of 40.
Robert was born at Lowestoft in 1877, a son of Robert and Isabella Hart. In 1881 his family lived at Erskine Place, Factory Lane. In 1891 his parents lived at 26 Cathcart Street and by 1901 they were living at 18 Jacob's Street, and later at 1 Mill Cottages, Mill Road.
In 1891 Robert was 'under detention' at the Formidable Training Ship for Boys (Industrial School) at Portishead. In 1901 Robert was the Third Hand on the trawler Invincible, LT 281.

George Henry Hayward
A Private with the 6th Battalion, George died on 28th of March 1918 at the age of 40.
George was born at Elmsted, Kent, on 18 February 1878, a son of Thomas and Frances Camelia Hayward. He was baptised at Elmsted, Kent, on 28 April 1878. In 1881 his family lived at Elmsted. In 1891 they lived at The Street, Hastingleigh Kent, and George was an agricultural labourer. By 1911 they were living at Bishop Cottages, The Street, Hastingleigh, and George was a farm labourer.

Arthur Reeve Jarvis
A Petty Officer 1st Class with H.M.S. Vanguard, Arthur died on 9th of July 1917 at the age of 40.
Arthur was born at Ipswich on 10 February 1876, a son of Samuel John and Maria Jarvis. Note, some records give his year of birth as 1878, but his birth was registered in 1876. By 1881 Arthur’s father had died and his mother married William Keeble, and the family lived at California, Wickham Market, Suffolk, and this was still their address in 1901.

George William Lincoln
A Skipper with H.M. Drifter Michaelmas Daisy, George died on 26th of November 1916 at the age of 40.
George was born at Pakefield on 30 July 1876, a son of Charles and Emmeline Lincoln. By 1891 his family was living at 13 Prospect Place, and this was still their home in 1911.
In 1891 George was the cook on the trawler Paragon. He was awarded his certificate of competency as a skipper on 23 April 1901.
In 1897 George married Sarah Louisa Fuller. In 1901 their home was at 2 Church Road, Pakefield. By 1911 they were living at 54 Church Road, Kirkley.

George Marler
A Colour Sergeant with 4th Bn., George died on 14th of February 1942 at the age of 40.
George was born at Shoreditch, London, a son of Herbert Walter and Mary (Polly) Marler. In 1911 his family lived at 16 Welsh Street, Shoreditch.
On 21 July 1919 George enlisted in the Machine Gun Corps, at Stratford, London. Prior to this he worked as a plumber's assistant. On 17 March 1922 he transferred to serve with the Royal Tank Corps.
George married Rose Annah (Rosannah) Chase at Romney Marsh on 28 February 1924.

John William Nichols
A Leading Telegraphist with H.M.S. Firedrake, John died on 17th of December 1942 at the age of 40.
John was born at Kessingland on 18 December 1901, a son of George and Anne Phoebe Nichols. He was baptised at Saint Edmund's Church, Kessingland, on 16 February 1902. In 1911 his family lived at Field Lane, Kessingland and in 1921 his parents lived at White House Corner, Carlton Colville.
By August 1917 John was working as a porter for the Great Eastern Railway Company.

Herbert Charles Page
A Chief Engineer with Steam Trawler Newhaven (Lowestoft), Herbert died on 15th of January 1940 aged 40.
Herbet was born at Gisleham on 9 April 1899, a son of Samuel and Mary E. Page. In 1901 his family lived at Covehithe. By 1911 Herbert’s father had died and his family lived at Peasenhall.

James Edward Pinkney
An Engineman with H.M. Drifter Jewel. James died on 18th of May 1941 at the age of 40.
James was born at Shadingfield, Suffolk, on 3 April 1901, a son of John and Sarah Pinkney. he was baptised at Shadingfield parish church on 19 May 1901. In 1911 his family lived at Hulver Street, Wrentham. In 1921 James' family still lived at Hulver Street, and Hames worked as a fisherman.
During 1921 James married Gladys May Rouse. In 1939 James and Gladys lived at 2 Gisleham Corner, Carlton Colville, and James worked as a fisherman (engineer).

Walter John Prettyman

Walter was born at Herringfleet in 1878, a son of Walter and Eliza Prettyman. He was baptised at Saint Margaret’s Church, Herringfleet, on 13 February 1879. By 1881 his father had died, and his family lived at Sunny Bank Cottage, Herringfleet. In 1891 they lived at Barsham Street, Lowestoft, and Walter was an errand boy.

Lily Florence Ray
A Civilian, Lily died on 2nd of July 1944 at the age of 40.
Lily was born at Sustead, Norfolk, on 28 August 1904, a daughter of Ernest Henry and Florence Maud Gooch. In 1911 her family lived at 195 Saint James' Street, Coltishall. The 1921 Census shows Lily as a visitor staying with her grandmother, Sarah Ann Gooch, at Aldborough, Norfolk. By 1921 Lily's parents were living at Bridge Road, Ludham, and by 1939 they had moved to Blacksmith's Loke, Hopton. Subsequently they lived at 2 Widow's Cottages, Somerleyton.

Charles Rodwell

Charles was born at Mendham, Suffolk, in 1876, a son of Charles and Elizabeth Rodwell. In 1881 his family lived at Oulton Road, Oulton, and by 1891 at Gordon Terrace, Oulton Broad, and Charles worked as a bricklayer's boy. In 1901 they lived at Oulton Street and by 1911 Charles' mother had died and his father lived at 15 Marsh Road, Oulton Broad.

Thomas Allen Rose
A Captain with the 1st Bn. Thomas died on 23rd of August 1914 at the age of 40.
Thomas was born at Aldershot on 17 August 1874, a son of Major Thomas Chapel Rose, of the Army Pay Corps, and Mrs. Augusta Decima Rose. Thomas' father died in 1890. In 1891 his family lived at Sunny Side, Severn Bank, Shrewsbury. Thomas' mother's maiden name was Leathes. She had been born at Herringfleet and related to the Leathes-Prior family. By 1911 his mother was living at 383 London Road, Lowestoft.

George Frederick Sabberton

George was born at Lowestoft on 20 September 1877, a son of (Samuel) Richard and Mary Ann Sabberton. By 1881 his family was living at 34 Stevens Street.

Edward Thomas Smith

Edward was born at Lowestoft in 1876, a son of Simon and Mary Ann Smith. In 1881 his family lived at 4 Bircham Square, East Street. In 1891 they lived at 17 Anguish Street. By 1901 Edward's father had died and his mother had married James Moss and his family lived at 21 Anguish Street. In 1901 Edward was working as a general labourer. By 1911 his family were living at 12 Anguish Street and Edward worked as a fish hawker on his own account.

Alexander, also known as Andrew, was born at Fraserburgh, Scotland, in 1876, a son of John Summers.
On 30 January 1902 Alexander married Ethelwynne Coleman at Saint John's Church, Lowestoft. Alexander was a fisherman living at 21 Sandringham Road, and Ethelwynne lived at 9 Stevens Street, Lowestoft. Note the marriage register gives his first name as Andrew.

Henry George Talbot
A Corporal with 3rd Bn. Henry died on 18th of December 1918 at the age of 40.
Henry was born at Camberwell, London, in 1879, a son of Edward and Rebecca Talbot. In 1881 his family lived at 185 Mayall Road, Brixton, London. By 1891 his family lived at 20 Saint George's Residences, Brixton.
On 30 May 1903 Henry married Martha Fowler at Saint Mary's Church, Wimbledon, and Henry lived at 86 Dundonald Road, Wimbledon, and worked as a plumber, and Martha lived at 10 Leopold Road, Wimbledon. By 1911 they were living at 516 London Road and Henry worked as a house painter.
